I'm super interested in this class of device: a cheap, light, long-battery-life Steam Deck. I'm not interested in playing Elder Ring on the go, but a Steam metroidvania indie handheld? Yes please! Very interested in seeing how this performs with SteamOS. I also wish it were smaller...
Russ does an amazing job with his reviews and tutorials videos, Anbernic is a good overall retro device, I own the RG351v and 351mp, they do a good job with custom firmware, however, now that Anbernic is stepping up their game with these new devices let's keep it real here, we're in 2022 and emulation games are from PS2, Gamecube etc, these games came out over 20 years ago and this device still struggles to emulate it perfectly, this is not good enough for price point I'm afraid. These new overprice retro devices need to match a minimum standard of nintendo switch or at the very least keep up with Ps3, Xbox 360 games without any issue, otherwise it's not really worth it I'm afraid.
Ive read that if you replace the ram thats coming with the win600 with a one that has 3200 mhz can improve emulation and pc games extremely. The GPU gets a big boost.
I like it too. I am going for the steam deck for myself too but I am maybe getting this till the steam deck is shipped in autumn/winter and then give this to my gf so she can play some games too on it
Very very nice in depth review !!! So well done. I also like that despite the good overview of the device there is going to be more in-depth testing to come. I'm interested to see more about this thing. The price very well could make or break what in general seems to be a pretty descent device.
If I hadn't gotten a Steam Deck already, I'd be very interested in this, it looks very very promising. SteamOS is absolutely going to be a fantastic option for pc handhelds like these, and if pricing is right this could be a great deck killer for those who can't get/don't need one.
The fact that this device struggles with PS2, NGC, and anything past mid-tier indie titles doesn't leave a good taste in my mouth. Anbernic keeps releasing "more powerful" devices, but the fact that they STILL can't make one that can play anything past PS1/N64 doesn't leave me optimistic for the future of the brand. I feel the only Anbernic devices worth investing in are the RG351V or the RG351MP, which are running on old and crusty chipsets. No one is buying Windows handhelds to be locked into PS1/N64 and below and indie games
I’ve recently got into playing a bunch of 2D platformers on steam and this thing looks like it would be great for me, if only I hadn’t preordered the Loki Max 😅.
What I like the most about a x86 handheld is being able to play with achievements. On modern games like octopath traveler, there's a Switch version but Switch has no achievements system at all. And on retro games like metal slug, you can get Steam achievements offline unlike Retroachievements which needs an internet connection
That's exactly why I want one. I can play through Persona 3 Portable and 4 again on the Switch, but with zero achievements. Those are 100+ hour games. I'm fine with it if I've never played a game before but with long games or something I'm replaying? Achievements are a must.

When I saw this video pop up, I thought, "No, why did I just order the 353?!" But after watching, I'm glad I did and will stick to my phone and Razer Kishi for larger screen handheld gaming. Thanks again for your great videos.
This latest flood of larger handhelds is kinda overwhelming if you are looking for something in that niche, guess if I was, I'd just wait and see until something pulls ahead more clearly. So far, I'd say only the miyoo mini, ayn loki and the steamdeck looks attractive in their respective brackets
I think out of the Box performance is really what we should always focus on. Many people like myself are able to spend their time and figure out how to adjust settings, but I really hate doing it and typically rely on out of the Box performance.
I think there is a place for focusing on multiple use cases. There are people for whom the out of the box experience is the only thing that matters because they are not interested in doing any tweaking. There are people who are interested in really digging in and doing some in-depth tweaking and optimization to wring the absolute most that they can out of the hardware. And there are people in the middle, who might be willing to install a custom firmware image or set up a launcher as part of their initial setup, but don't want to do any long-term tweaking beyond that. I largely find myself in the last category personally, but all are valid perspectives and I think Russ usually does a good job of addressing all of them.
For those trying to put the Win600 into perspective: it's essentially a modern revamp of the Win 2 (performance wise) in a less ergonomic wrapping with (hopefully) less hardware faults.
HAHAHA I knew it !! $300 US BASE PRICE, in "sale" from $325 US (suuuuuure) They AGAIN get absolutely demolished by the competition. "Anbernic : Get Less for More" should be their company motto/tagline lol. And it's not just a question of power VS price. The biggest issue is that you get a device rushed to market, that is badly designed, and unsupported. If most of your devices would be absolute trash without the community's hard work, well, there's a major problem. I terms of quality and design issues, Anbernic has become similar to Powkiddy, with the huge difference that with the latter you get cheaper prices, so it makes sense. It's one or the other, not both. It's almost insulting. In any cases, I think anyone still interested by this device should wait for Taki's review. He's a consultant for such devices in China. And more importantly, he's not afraid to be critical when there is a problem or if other devices are better in every ways for similar prices. All other reviewers are, to say the least, generally overly enthusiastic, even when the product is mediocre... They don't want to get blacklisted...
This looks like it's about equivalent to the Odin pro performance wise without the windows 11 arm headaches. If it's $299 and actually starts shipping on July 5 Anbernic could have its first win in a while.
Love these short unboxing videos 😁 if I considered it only on specs (including that single channel ram), I'd definitely be very disappointed. After this video though, all comes down to price and further tests, but it doesn't look like it can do much more than Odin for now, in a much bigger footprint and probably with worse battery life.
How go you feel about the Ayn Loki Zero compared to the Win600? It has the same CPU but has Dual-channel RAM and a Xbox style layout. I'm trying to decide if I should preorder it as a retro emulation device over the Odin or Aya Neo Air Plus. It's up for preorder at $199 work a free upgrade to 8GB RAM. I'd like to be able to play up to most of the PS2 and Gamecube library. I'm currently rocking a Asus Zenfone 5z (SD845, 4GB RAM) with a Gamesir X2.
Cheers Russ, looking forward to the full review and price reveal. Oh and battery life too, kinda crucial. I know someone who likes white handhelds if you want to move it on later .... :)
One thing to note is that upgrading the RAM to 3200 MHz has a very significant effect on performance. It's still not as good as it could have been with dual channel, but it's a lot better (by what I've seen a 30-50% improvement in performance).
I brought it up in ETA's video but since people are looking at this as an indie game device, could you test if the itchio and GOG Galaxy clients are a good experience on it? Or is it force users to download their games from those stores the hard way
Awesome early impressions. Your videos are great. One of the things I'm looking for in a windows handheld is a device to help me with my Steam unplayed list, lol. So I'd be interested in a review that touches on 2000-2010 era AA or AAA games. Things like Tomb Raider, Arkham Asylum, Fable 3, Bioshock, Borderlands 2, etc.
I agree totally. I want to play the Arkham trilogy and the middle Tomb Raider trilogy (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld) on something like this. Anbernic has Tomb Raider 2013 in one of their demo videos, so it should be playable. I trust their demo videos a lot less than an outside reviewer though, so I'd like to see how 2010 era AAA games run, like you said.
Hey Russ, I would love to see the deep dive before the release date! I know thats not a ton of time, so maybe a split two part video for each operating system.
Does it, or will it, dual-boot with Steam OS out of the box when it hits retail? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, if it also comes with Steam OS? Also, can Windows 11 be installed?
Why are the ergonomics not the MOST important feature of these portable devices is always beyond me... Nothing matters (performance, screen etc...) if I get cramps and pain after 30 min of playing. Also now when Steam deck is here for 400$ (if u can find it :D) these weaker devices need to be a lot cheaper.
Agreed! They're such an old company, you'd think they'd put out better devices than new ones like Aya or Ayn.. No analog shoulder buttons? Dpad up top for a windows device? Why?? lol.
right.. this should the thing that's talked about the most... it doesn't matter if this could run cyberpunk at a 100 fps if the ergonomics are bad and u can't even enjoy playing the game then it's a failed product. I own the 552 and using the analog sticks and the triggers is an absolute nightmare. Also a lot of people are hoping this will be a budget option.. it won't the 552 is around 200 usd so this will definitely be priced much higher. anbernic always overprices their products.
I pre ordered the steam deck just to play low end rpg games, that are basically turned based like old final fantasy games. I think this would be perfect. But is it more cost effective than the steam deck? Website doesn't have that sort of info on it yet. I do have an older anbernic handheld I bought awhile ago, the RG351M.
Does Windows 10 come pre-installed on the included 256 GB SSD? And if so, how would one upgrade to a bigger SSD and keep the Windows 10 license? Thank you for all you do!
Great Video thanks. Hopefully the price will be around 200-300USD and spent a little more in upgrading the ram to 16GB (*single channel ) will make this an awesome emulation gadgets.
Man, that analog placement is a nightmare if you're thinking about playing any dual analog game! Just seems so uncomfortable pressing the triggers while holding the sticks!
Using winareo tweaker to disable all windows related tasks/ updates as well as disabling cortana and win defender should up your performance like crazy.
My dude, you are eyeballing the mesures but you have a ruler on the your mat/background. To be fair, you were pretty spot on on your guesses. Or maybe you where doing that and I'm just a prick. Cool video tho. I'm exited for the future of handheld computers.
Great video, love these videos on the little handhelds you make reviews on. Because of you I plan on getting a Miyoo Mini sometime in the future :) I don't know if this is up your channel's alley but, I'd love a review from you on the GameSir X3 Type-C Controller that came out recently. They had an indiegogo campaign where they sold it for 39.99$ I believe which has ended, and it now costs 99.99$ as its retail price, so from that retail price alone it's totally fine if you don't want to make a review on it. I considered getting it myself during it's indiegogo campaign but I ultimately chose not to as I didn't know wheter or not the pass-through charging feature would work for my phone. Anyways keep it up! You're awesome.
Hey Russ 😊 I've recently bought the odin pro but realised how long I'm going to be waiting for it. On paper this looks just as good if not better and has quick delivery. How do you think they fair up and do you think I'd be doing the right thing?
Hi Jamie, I would recommend watching my in-depth review for more insight. It will provide better performance than an Odin Pro but the battery life and ergonomics are quite a bit worse, and it's more expensive.
@@RetroGameCorps thanks Russ 🙂 I watched your video in depth and I bit the bullet and cancelled my order,I just couldn't wait that long 😅. Also I really liked what I saw from the emulation side and I'm sure ps2 emulation will get better in time 😊. Also it seems much better at playing pc games ,hopefully I've made the right choice. I took on board the negatives you mentioned but I think I could live with them if it meant getting my hands on it faster. Thanks for getting back to me so quick 🙂
It might not be your cup of tea, but I'm wondering if you could also add Darkest Dungeon and Slay the Spire to your tests (yeah I know those have Switch versions, but I play them with mods, so I always thought those are the kind of games that'd be perfect for low-budget handheld pc's).
Same here, the lack of analog shoulder buttons and that dpad is a huge negative for me for a windows device? A gaming device that plays games other than 16bit? C'mon..
@@KyleRuggles I think it's also reflected in the performance. It struggles with some titles, and definitely doesn't match up to what the Steam Deck is capable of. So maybe that's why it's not analogue - it's not strong enough to emulate games that take advantage of those buttons.
In terms of ergonomics, which handheld would you choose to play fighting games like street fighter/mortal kombat which useses a lot of L/R buttons and shooters/adventures which also uses a lot of L/R buttons in combination with analog sticks. Pah, not to mention, no micro sd card slot, no hdmi, no analog triggers, single port ram memory slot, i mean, really Anbernic? 300$ for almost no features?
iirc, the AYA NEO Air Plus is the unit with the i3. AYN only offers Mendocino and Intel 7505/8505 on their lower end Loki.
@@RandomPlaceHolderName the 8505 might just be called i3 without a P core. The P core itself will consume 3 watts under presure and for only having 12 watts max, the igpu might get like 2 or 3 watts for it own. Even with 15 watts as a tdp limit the igpu will get 4 watts at most. In the loki mini pro there is no power hungry P core so you will be giving 5 or 6 watts to the gpu. Most games on intel apus throttle on the igpu insted of cpu. It will peform better in the same tdps unless you want heavy ps3 emulation. Sorry for the text wall.
@@shlokshah5379 You're confused. 8505 has a P core. i3 has 2. But the biggest difference is the iGPU. 48EUs at 900mhz vs 64EUs at 1100mhz is going to be noticeable.
This is perfect and only $299
Things I wanted to know for the review is what features of Steam Os works. Like if suspend, TDP and Frame cap work.
Ok I officially love the new muzak!!! Also you’re totally killing it man. Loving all the content.
Love your videos man. Always top quality.
I’ve never seen a window shaker (AC unit) in a closet before….. that is pretty good
I want to see performance in old AAA games (when ps3/x360 were actual consoles)
yeah, i tried anbernic devices before! (only one the: 351P because of your review)
very good stuff and i planned to buy the win600 since i've first read about it!
thanks a lot for your review and for your content at all! love it!
Great impressions video Russ!
@@Walter5850 Just hoping. :) It's reasonable to assume that lower-power chips take less power...
@@Walter5850 Thanks for this info! Wish this had been in the review...
Horrible battery life guaranteed here.
With batocera you can emulate up to the wii u.
Interesting, looking forward to your full review, this device seems to have potential.
Ive read that if you replace the ram thats coming with the win600 with a one that has 3200 mhz can improve emulation and pc games extremely. The GPU gets a big boost.
Really like this, but I’ll still go for steamdeck, but competition is always good. Great video as always.
I like it too. I am going for the steam deck for myself too but I am maybe getting this till the steam deck is shipped in autumn/winter and then give this to my gf so she can play some games too on it
I have no idea why you'd buy this over the 8505 Loki or i3 AYA NEO Air Plus...
@@RandomPlaceHolderName Steamdeck is better.
@@mathisblair2798 Ok fanboy.
Because this one will be in your hands july 15th and those others ones not before xmas
Very very nice in depth review !!! So well done. I also like that despite the good overview of the device there is going to be more in-depth testing to come. I'm interested to see more about this thing. The price very well could make or break what in general seems to be a pretty descent device.
You brighten my day, Thank you!
If I hadn't gotten a Steam Deck already, I'd be very interested in this, it looks very very promising. SteamOS is absolutely going to be a fantastic option for pc handhelds like these, and if pricing is right this could be a great deck killer for those who can't get/don't need one.
Not a deck killer at all. The performance is fucking garbage. The loki looks more budget and more powerful.
@@cryengine_x lmao you sound so salty bro
Russ they need to just hire you as a consultant so you can feedback on behalf of the community as to what we all want from a handheld device.
Thank you for the great review Russ. I always enjoy your videos. Looks like a great handheld.
I would buy one just to play old games like gta san Andreas or nfs etc
We have the same Usb C hub 🤣 great video as always Russ
I’ve recently got into playing a bunch of 2D platformers on steam and this thing looks like it would be great for me, if only I hadn’t preordered the Loki Max 😅.
I think you made the right choice
What I like the most about a x86 handheld is being able to play with achievements. On modern games like octopath traveler, there's a Switch version but Switch has no achievements system at all. And on retro games like metal slug, you can get Steam achievements offline unlike Retroachievements which needs an internet connection
That's exactly why I want one. I can play through Persona 3 Portable and 4 again on the Switch, but with zero achievements. Those are 100+ hour games.
I'm fine with it if I've never played a game before but with long games or something I'm replaying? Achievements are a must.
I’m on the road when I got this notification. Hopefully I can watch the entire video before the wifi disappears 😅
Now I am invested did you finish watching.... before the wifi disappeared
@@tanmaypanadi1414 I only got to watch less than half way through before the video couldn’t load 😭 but I finished it now lol
You should have pulled out the RGB10 Max 2 when comparing the stacked trigger buttons and analog sticks.
best channel to watch review and device in take. everybody must do this quality videos. use mic volume up at the video editor so that there is no hassle to pump my volume up to 60-100%. be like this guy high quality videos 💪👍👍
When I saw this video pop up, I thought, "No, why did I just order the 353?!" But after watching, I'm glad I did and will stick to my phone and Razer Kishi for larger screen handheld gaming. Thanks again for your great videos.
Oh yes, I love the sound and the graphic of this handheld 👍😃Greetings from RetroGameCity
Anbernic: let the community fix our shit make our products better
Ugh I want to order this NOW!
HAHAHA I knew it !! $300 US BASE PRICE, in "sale" from $325 US (suuuuuure)
They AGAIN get absolutely demolished by the competition.
Yes! New video
Based on the performance I feel like the price should be cheaper than the loki mini handhelds or at least similar price
I wonder if it would be possible to mod some better sticks onto the device
The joystick placement is a huge deal breaker for me.
This looks like it's about equivalent to the Odin pro performance wise without the windows 11 arm headaches. If it's $299 and actually starts shipping on July 5 Anbernic could have its first win in a while.
Yes, $299 and half july in our hands
Will we ever see a handhelp pc that serves as a (thick)phone ? that would be cool to see
This looks really interesting, but with the Steam Deck supposedly picking up their production pace I think I would need to pass on this
Love these short unboxing videos 😁 if I considered it only on specs (including that single channel ram), I'd definitely be very disappointed. After this video though, all comes down to price and further tests, but it doesn't look like it can do much more than Odin for now, in a much bigger footprint and probably with worse battery life.
Yeah it has a battery life worse than the Odin and even the Odin can run Skyrim at 20~30fps.
Might have to give this a serious look since my Odin is taking so long to ship out. Can’t wait for your in-depth video!
I'm currently rocking a Asus Zenfone 5z (SD845, 4GB RAM) with a Gamesir X2.
how does the rg552 in line shoulder buttons compare to say, a 3ds xl? because I find the 3ds ergonomics acceptable.
After using the Steam Deck... the next portable gaming device I'll buy will be none other than Steam Deck 2! 😌
Or is it force users to download their games from those stores the hard way
What is that grip you have there for the white 351P (at the back) :D Thanks!
This is the era of Handheld console, bring PC game with high graphic to your pocket.
No sd card apparently. Weird.
Because they take an example of the switch. That thing is even worse
Can you tell us if this device has a native landscape display or portrait display?
Does Windows 10 come pre-installed on the included 256 GB SSD? And if so, how would one upgrade to a bigger SSD and keep the Windows 10 license? Thank you for all you do!
Great Video thanks. Hopefully the price will be around 200-300USD and spent a little more in upgrading the ram to 16GB (*single channel ) will make this an awesome emulation gadgets.
Man, that analog placement is a nightmare if you're thinking about playing any dual analog game!
Just seems so uncomfortable pressing the triggers while holding the sticks!
i understand who (like me) prefers a device for gaming… but i also have a backbone and high end smartphone and honestly it is a great solution
How do lower end 3d games play (aka games pre-2010ish), and how's the game streaming so far?
Could you please test some indie windows games in the SteamOS? I would like to know if I could run Momodora I and II on this
Using winareo tweaker to disable all windows related tasks/ updates as well as disabling cortana and win defender should up your performance like crazy.
Wondering how this compares to the Loki Zero. It has the 3050e and it's 199 :)
My dude, you are eyeballing the mesures but you have a ruler on the your mat/background. To be fair, you were pretty spot on on your guesses. Or maybe you where doing that and I'm just a prick. Cool video tho. I'm exited for the future of handheld computers.
could you test Launchbox aswell in your next review , if possible?
Is there any chance when you test emulation to see if 3DS works very well on this
Looks promising! Depends on the price but this might be a contender for me
Russ: the coolest geek to rule them all
Hey Russ 😊 I've recently bought the odin pro but realised how long I'm going to be waiting for it.
Great job!
It's a shame that these don't have analogue inputs. Would have been something worth considering.
Which one feels the most natural/comfortable:
Powerkiddy RGB10 Max 2 or Anbernic RG353 or Anbernic Win600?
Owned rg351p and love it max, but anything after just doesn't appeal to me. We know anbernic sort of lost direction, more variety of devices than popcorn flavors
I just checked their site and the pre sale has started for the 3020e , and it is $300...
Will this come with a windows key for reinstalling windows if needed? I can’t see anbernic buying a key for each win600 device they made. Its most likely pirated key & copy of windows.
They really need better controls on a windows gaming device. I can’t see myself playing CoD or Rust without getting completely recked by the other players because the placement and size of the analog sticks. Hopefully in the future we can look back at this and say it was a good start.
Its basically a Mad Katz version of the steam deck.
Windows oem is free for anything up to 9 inch
Even if this is gonna be a budget handheld pc how does it compare to the AYN Loki which goes for about the same price?
Gonna hope this will be a quite budget device for me to get... but the single channel RAM is going to be quite a downer to think about getting.
At around 300$...?
@@CarbonPanther The Loki mini pro is cheaper and has dual channel RAM, and it performs better.
@goldcartman but you have to wait until xmas to get it
I'm assuming this won't be available anytime soon, since it's not listed on their page yet? We can't call it budget if there's no price!!
Release date is early July.
I'm going for a budget x86 handheld, I'll wait for the Mendocino handhelds that are coming at the end of the year.
