I'm Thai and I considered the shot squid is exotic BTW. Anything else is common. (Include the dancing shrimps.) But raw alive squid in seafood sauce is just getting popular less than a year. And so controversial because some restaurants couldn't provide clean squid and make people sick.

taste and adjusting salt , lime juice and sugar to suite your taste

Sonny deserves cool Asian points. Bc he'll be eating stuff I won't even eat. Not to be awkward or anything but sometimes I wish my southern born & raised country Caucasian hubby was more like him. Hes way less willing to try new things, stick w/ what he knows, & gets me fatter more quickly w/ the things my body is apparently not as used to. Meat is good and everything but I think I'm gonna start cutting back. I was never big on pork anyways & I swear 95% of the time when he's cooking meats, it's always pork. Which I heard is the hardest to digest. Gonna start making my own ish which requires less energy 👍. Other than shredding & mooshing papaya...
Went to the Asian store today & found some things they don't usually have & them some. Found roasted rice, fish sauce, papaya, rice cakes, chilli flakes,, fermented fish sauce, Laotian sausage. Then some eggplant, eggs, green apples,,,, & let me tell ya my ideas r unlimited. I swear, it's the little things that make me happy. I can eat on little money's worth, fill up on the food I miss, & not even hafta share. Just got a plate of idk what u call it. But rice wrapped pieces of meat, black mushrooms, cilantro, onions,,, w/ a Chilli dipping sauce type thing & just by the looks he was not impressed. 😋 more for meeee🤗. Now only if I could get him to be more mindful of not losing my specifically Asian type cooking wares 😑😤

That is a fair price for spiny lobster where they exist around Florida and the islands. It's normally about $38 a pound raw right now. In Australia they have a few species and they call those "ornate crays" - short for crayfish. You will notice they don't have large front claws like the Maine lobster (I live in Maine!). I also catch the squid on the coast here and they look just like those (here they are longfin squid), but watching them be eaten raw was a bit too much for me; it wasn't really off-putting but I have a hard time seeing any animals die (even for food). Still a great video!

Those live shrimp eaten with head & shell are exceptionally nutritionally good for you. The shell part of the shrimp, which westerners usually don't eat, contain a very powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin. It gives the shrimp, lobsters & crabs their red color when cooked.
Another interesting point with the eating of the live squid is that that "black ink" is analogous to our blood BUT the iron in our hemoglobin (red blood color) is replaced by copper for mollusks (cephalopods).

"Zaab/Zabb" is actually pronounced like "Zair'abt" but faster. It mean "delicious" in Isaan (Northeastern Thai) dialect. And in some context also mean "spicy in a delicious way.". Leng is actually not that expensive dish and more soupy than in the vid. It's pretty famous lately and you can get it cheaper in more local market. The word Leng itself mean the Spine Bone of the Pig usually used for soup based. Leng Zaab is Leng meet "Tom Zaab" which mean sour+spicy soup.
The squid-shot thing... TBH even as a Thai woman I dare not eating it eventhough I absolutely love Sashimi. I prefer jumping shrimps which are one of my favorite food of all time but I rarely eat them too. It's quite "Exotic" in the sense that's it's not in everyday life like "Pad Kraprow" or something like that, yes. Almost everything in the vid is quite "exotic" even for us maybe except for Leng.
Anyway Thanks for eating and promoting thai food. You people are amazing.

Hmm, i didn't see the live squid while in Thailand. I was there two times. I loved the food there and I really could not believe how clean it was compared to other southeast Asian countries. My wife is from Malaysia, which also has some great food, but some of the restaurants scare me to death, lol.

Going to be honest, that live seafood is pretty torturous. I like the content but coating that seafood in seasoning that certainly is painful crossed a line for me.
Not to mention the weird squid thing is unnecessary to say the least. I do not approve even though I’m an avid meat eater.

@@lemonslice5yearsand790 not while being bathed in salts and toyed with prior.
We are above that, and I find that Asian cultures are much more emotionless towards food than average westerners, and that's fine on its own, but some of their practices are way below acceptable, mainly in lacking respect for the animal that is giving you life, they are very indifferent to the torture that food endures.
Don't get me wrong, i live in hypocrisy 100% as a meat eater, it just triggered me in particular it seems. I live in Atlantic Canada where the best lobsters in the world are caught and sold, and i find a death in boiling steam is horrendous.
And yes STEAM, which gets hotter than water under pressure, the proper way to cook a lobster is steam boil in a shallow sea watered pot.
You will never convince the people from here that stabbing them in the head first to kill them is a good idea, the thought of the lobster feeling pain is not even discussed. So i get it, it's just my thoughts on it, I'm not about cancel culture at all and generally love the content, no holds barred.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be fantastic if all our food felt no pain, but alas, some of it does, and it's important to show at least the bare minimum kindness to the things that sustain us.

    • @Trigger200284
      @Trigger200284 2 роки тому

@ratherbebaking56 PH they are being killed before we cook them or consume them, we don't toy with them and slather them in bbq sauce and 16 mesh black pepper while they are still conscious or aware.

That squid dish takes exotic to the next level. Usually "exotic" just means the food the local population resorted to have to use as an ingredient and did the best they could with it. This shit was just mean...
