I did a real world durability test on each model. The old Monster survived 4 hits with a sledge hammer, while the new Monster survived 5 hits with the sledge hammer. Im going to give the new Monster the edge when it comes to sledge hammer durability. Hope this helps with anyone on the fence about the durability of the new model.
I don’t have a problem with the case and dial/handset changes, I just won’t buy a gen3 or gen4 Monster because of the flat crystal with the hideous magnifiers on them. Come on Seiko, go back to the single domed crystal of the gen1 and gen2 that gave the entire dial a slight magnification and that beautiful distortion when vied off angle. (And no, before someone says it, I’m not buying a Monster just to “mod” it🤨)
The new one is really growing on me. Somehow in between a dressier and a more tool-watch-like diver. Great comparison and again, excellent video quality!
Don't you just love how you can buy the best divers under $500; with so much variety with seikos an don't poo poo the 4r movement it's a beast . The dials and lum are just crazy
I agree Bruce - toned down - not as aggressive as the 2nd gen - they did do a very nice job - its a more versatile piece for daily wear - therefore imho it is a good addition to the series and has a legit place alongside a gen 2 in a sport collection . The gen 2 remains the design nexus which unifies" the monster" motif - . Monsters and Panerai - i think share that " core design" idea from which other excellent designs fun functional designs can evolve. I would like to see a waxing and waning of the aggressive tones - makes it interesting - like Pams. We really have to come up with a " Paneristi" equivalent term to coin for Monster fans.
new monster lume is similar to my Tudor pelegos! I have a MiniMonster in red and black and it is gorgeous, looking at ther new one in 2022. great post! BTW.
The 4th gen has really grown on me. I’m not sure what the diameter of the dial is, but it plays larger than the 3rd gen to me. Could just be an optical illusion.
This is a fairly tame Monster, all in all. Looks a lot less outrageous than gen1 and gen2. The seiko sumo latest editions are the real MVPs of changes, though ... sapphire crystal, new 6r35 movements (70hr PR)..
I just ordered the new monster 2 days ago hopefully I'll like it like the old monster. Thank you again for another great video keep up the great work!!!!!!
Agreed. My best friend had the orange Monster when we were teenagers, I was always so envious of that watch. The orange dial is such an eye-catcher and confidently insists that one "take it or leave it."
Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰 Always great videos 👍🏼 I love the blue face with the black bezel 😍 But which model is the one you have there in the upper right? Looks like a Samurai 🤔
I have a first gen I originally bought in 2004. I like the new one and I'd buy it, but they changed the lug to lug. The old one was 47 and perfect for my wrist. I can't do 49.
I never "got" the Monster. The Sumo is bigger. The Tuna looks "badder". In fact, the best thing they ever did to the Monster was to put a shroud on it to create the 637 Baby Tuna.
That orange monster isn't as old as mine. Yours has a cyclops mine doesn't, yours doesn't have the 5 incremental numbers every 5 minutes. Mine has 7s26 movement. Not sure what yours has. Yours might be newer.
What is the coloring on the metal parts of the hands, induces, and markings on the bezel? Heard gunmetal in the video, but looks almost gold in some pictures I've seen. Thanks.
How often do they come out with new models of Monsters? I don't wanna pay $500+ for an orange Monster, and current one has too many cons for me (mostly the cyclops and day). I could buy a sapphire crystal minus the cyclops right? 🤔
I have the 3rd gen Coral blue monster. I wanted to know since I haven’t seen a 4th gen in person, if the bracelet from Gen 4 would fit on a 3rd gen monster? Or are the end lugs different on both?
The 4th gen just looks more simple and worst, no problems with the day date ciclops, but the case, the bezel, just doesn't looks that much monster anymore
You just compared two new monsters, not gen 1 to gen 4. Gen one does not have magnifier and knurled crown. Plus Gen 1 has day, date. Appears you compared a gen 3 to gen 4.
Seen the new Monster today and I was so impressed in what Seiko did, it is completely a notch above in quality.
I miss the monster teeth indeces, also when I think Monster I think orange dial.

Bruce, I totally agree on the new bracelet and clasp. But with that bezel, it just doesn’t have that Monster look. And the day-date sucks.
What sucks about having the day? It is just more information.
i prefer the new one, it look classier yet still sporty, it fits in any other outfit and not too eyecatchy like the old one
The new one is really growing on me. Somehow in between a dressier and a more tool-watch-like diver. Great comparison and again, excellent video quality!
I like to blue dial but dont like the ss strap. so I ended buying the SRPD27 with silicon band. very happy
That giant cyclops just ruins it for me. Sounds like an old horror movie. THE GIANT CYCLOPS.
I hate it.

Great review, clear and concise. I like the new Monster, think im going to get one. thx
Gen 1 does it for me. With gen 2 close behind.
new monster lume is similar to my Tudor pelegos! I have a MiniMonster in red and black and it is gorgeous, looking at ther new one in 2022. great post! BTW.
Awesome shots and comparison. I have to return a crappy Hamilton mechanical and I’m going with the monster!
At least they didn’t put sapphire on it and double the price like they did with the bloody Sumo.
2nd gen Monster IS THE MONSTER 😎😎
Like the first gen better overall. But that bracelet fitment of the new version is nice!
Will that new bracelet fit on an SRP309? If so, I see a bracelet purchase in my future! Nice comparison Bruce!😍
Man, the gold ring is pretty tight on the manly fingers
The 4th gen has really grown on me. I’m not sure what the diameter of the dial is, but it plays larger than the 3rd gen to me. Could just be an optical illusion.
Fantastic comparison Bruce. I can't wait to check out the new Monster in person. Thank you :)
Awesome review. Although i welcome change and updates, Im still leaning more toward the classic Monster
I have two of the new Gen4 Monsters and absolutely love them hence looking to buy a black version now.
1:59... I like the Gen 3 on the left much better overall! Although, I do like the fitted end links and clasp links on the new one better.
That cyclops is absolutely horrible, It's always the first thing I remove with a soldering iron and a hobby knife.
Need an skx779 to compare to. The original and still the best. I feel they've significantly watered down each version since then aesthetically
Still happy with my gen 1 black monster. Wear it at least once a week.
New one is more refined, but the old one is more of a monster.
The 4th gens are just a bit plain and simplified compared to previous gens. Not for me at the moment.
Agreed. My best friend had the orange Monster when we were teenagers, I was always so envious of that watch. The orange dial is such an eye-catcher and confidently insists that one "take it or leave it."
It's a more refined monstah !
Love the cyclops but perhaps they should done away with the day complication.
Greetings from Denmark 🇩🇰 Always great videos 👍🏼 I love the blue face with the black bezel 😍
But which model is the one you have there in the upper right? Looks like a Samurai 🤔
Am i the only one who loves seiko monster 4th gen?😅
It took some time but I do too.
gen 2 with fang is real monster for me..
We need monster teeth again...
I have a first gen I originally bought in 2004. I like the new one and I'd buy it, but they changed the lug to lug. The old one was 47 and perfect for my wrist. I can't do 49.
Could you swap out the bezels? That old stainless steel bezel would look great on the new monster.
its a fucking beautiful watch
I never "got" the Monster. The Sumo is bigger. The Tuna looks "badder". In fact, the best thing they ever did to the Monster was to put a shroud on it to create the 637 Baby Tuna.
No worries man 👍
I have to disagree, the tuna definitely does not look badder especially not when compared to a gen 1 monster
I think Seiko has now finally over played their monster hand. enough already!
they added the day name ? i was hoping to buy it but with the day name... its not go for me... it looks cheap
the thinner minute hand is the deal breaker.
The key to a monster is the steel bezel.
That orange monster isn't as old as mine. Yours has a cyclops mine doesn't, yours doesn't have the 5 incremental numbers every 5 minutes. Mine has 7s26 movement. Not sure what yours has. Yours might be newer.
The new monster doesn´t look like a monster with that black bezel. Not for me.
The date is great on the old Monster. The new day-date is too much. They missed it there.
What is the coloring on the metal parts of the hands, induces, and markings on the bezel? Heard gunmetal in the video, but looks almost gold in some pictures I've seen. Thanks.
3rd gens are the best
How often do they come out with new models of Monsters? I don't wanna pay $500+ for an orange Monster, and current one has too many cons for me (mostly the cyclops and day).
I could buy a sapphire crystal minus the cyclops right? 🤔
yes. its seiko...no more no less! the Legacy, the legend! known for his durability, toughness!
Got a new Monster and immediately hated the cyclops. Got it off on day 2. Much better.
Hey Bruce, great video, though I still look forward to get the 3rd gen. Any info on availability of the 3rd gen? Thank you.
I'm guessing they are just going to sell off whatever stock they have. I've heard dealers can't order any more of the orange and frost
Does anybody know the release date for the new Seiko skx.
You mean the 5kx? What a joke that was by seiko. Oh well many homages are filling the void better and cheaper too i must say
what is the watch on the top left @0:34?
That caught my eye as well, I dug through OPs old videos, its called the SBDC047
The upgrade of day wheel is plus, so convenient.
May I ask what the other dark blue dial watch is in the beginning of the video? The one with the black bezel
I miss the teeth on the bezel. Less and less a monster.
Lug to lug too big, thickness, also too big, like the clasp. Make a 12mm thick one, orange face (sunburst), Sign me up!
What are the other watch models there? I am keen on the upper left watch. Could you tell me the model number? Thanks!
BW how about a PAM114 which really pops with the white face at a great price?
I have the 3rd gen Coral blue monster. I wanted to know since I haven’t seen a 4th gen in person, if the bracelet from Gen 4 would fit on a 3rd gen monster?
Or are the end lugs different on both?
The real old one had minute numbers next to the indices
I just bought the SRPD27 yesterday at the AD 😂😂
The 4th gen just looks more simple and worst, no problems with the day date ciclops, but the case, the bezel, just doesn't looks that much monster anymore
Do you review Smart Watch like Samsung Active 2 and really want to know your opinion about it. Thanks in advance.
a stamped clasp lol on a $600 SEIKO
Have the same Gen 3 and would not trade it for the new one. It just doesn’t do it for me
The watch really didn't need a Cyclops..kinda takes attention away from the interesting new hands
All iterations are nice but just like movies,, the original is always the best
What’s that model on top right @7:14? Thanks
Why the new monster is so thick ? This is just a 3 hands watch.
Most Seikos are thick.
Gen 1, nothing else for me.
the old looks angrier
Day-date 🤤 🤤 🤤
Everything else 👍
the gen 1 is still king
A lot of misalignments there
New monster = not as monstrous
Seiko basically reissued Orient M Force and called it Monster.
You do know seiko owns that company.....
Sad, to pay $800/900 for a seiko
Lol I feel sad for you if you do. They retail for waaaaay less than that
Seiko ruined it
You just compared two new monsters, not gen 1 to gen 4. Gen one does not have magnifier and knurled crown. Plus Gen 1 has day, date. Appears you compared a gen 3 to gen 4.
Still overpriced with a crappy bracelet.
This is not a Monster...
First!
