We owe so much to that generation - I wonder what they would think if they could see where we are now! RIP
I know, I was thinking the same thing whilst watching.
Makes me so sad.
Absolutely we are producing a generation of young people who are being 'taught' they should feel guilty for events that happened centuries ago and to literally hate people like Churchill and see them as 'war criminal's' and to hate our heritage and history etc
what a wonderful, funny and humble guy, thanks for your service Peter,,,,,RIP
Peter was the best comedy actor this country ever produced. His facial expressions are legendary and has me in stitches every time I watch Carry on up the Khyber. "I'm not standing around here waiting for mine to stiffen"!
What bollucks - have you never heard of Peter Sellers?
@Drive Easy - Totally a matter of taste. Genius as Peter Sellers was, he didn't make me laugh anywhere near as much as Peter Butterworth.
Yes you're right about his facial expressions which were so funny but also a fantastic funny funny actor, and very intelligent too.
Growing up in the 1960’s my parents war time friends and relatives all seemed to be of the caliber of these ‘chaps’. How I miss their humour and ‘can do’ attitude. The world is poorer for their passing.
I concur with your lament. However, the uncomfortable truth is that these giants of understatement are now reborn as the very midgets of ubiquitous entitlement.
so humble, they were the greatest generation
So true, Ron. I adore that generation. We owe them so much.
This is incredible, amazing, never knew Butterworth was a (WAFU) fleet air arm pilot, had been shot down in action and that he had attempted an escape from Stalag luft 1 and had been at Stalag Luft 3 (the famous great escape camp)! What a fantastic old school (golden age) generation these guys all came from, with their still upper lips amazing daring do stories (told in a matter of fact, self-depreciating and nonchalant style) and humble modesty when you consider they were responsible for overcoming the worse tyranny the World has ever experienced.
Throughout his time as a POW he sent back to his family coded letters giving information. Peter stayed behind in Stalag-3 instead of escaping so he could keep sending back information to the UK via his letters.
Probably my fav Carry On actor. Peter was brilliant at playing the bumbling half-wit, Nothing at all like his real self.
I don't know for certain if this is stagsd or not, but it doesn't matter does it? It gives us an insight into the man behind the mask and I'm glad for it.
R I P Peter.
Peter Butterworth was my fave Carry on star. Loved this
He seems 👍 like a nice guy Rip Peter Butterworth xXxX
Lovely old school British people here. Great.
I thought you was a store detective 🤣🤣 2 mins in and I'm already crying with laughter.
Excellent brilliant actor RIp Peter Butterworth x🙏😥
LEGEND pound scene in carry on camping the GREATEST never seen this b 4 thanks for doing this 👍🙏👍
Thank goodness for You Tube where these gems are preserved! You can find anything here,it seems, thanks youtube.
Is could be the best thing ever on the internet, what it can offer you is pretty incredible really.
His mannerisms, his bumbling fumbling self effacing characters, were a hoot.
A classic character actor.
Stole the scenes on everyone of his appearances.
A mild an charming man off stage...
Never knew he was married to Janet B.
She was an amazing talent for mannerisms, voices an personalities of famous people.
Those were the days..... and people. Look around you at the bunch who we have today.
Nice to find out about Peter's RAF exploits, you'd never guess from his clowning in the carry on's what a hero he was
Peter was NOT in the RAF. He was in the ROYAL NAVY. His was in the Fleet Air Arm (WAFU'S!) flying aircraft from aircraft carriers etc....but please don't confuse the two.
He was a great comic actor talen too soon ..sad bout his daughter aswell ...janet was nice woman rip all x
Great man modest but incredible war time service and such an intelligent actor.
Never even knew his name I looked him up and ended up here after an image of him flashed through my mind from carry on girls, it is very touching to read about him and see what an amazing man he was RIP Peter and thanks for making us laugh.
TheMaleforce v
A gent of a man, I always think he was not used enough in the carry on films, but I think it was because every time he comes into one he steals every line and steals the film, one of the best of his time, a war hero and a bloody fine actor as well, long may he carry on and its a joy to watch him on TV.
ross wenman Completely agree with you Ross. Even when sharing a scene with the bigger stars like Kenny Williams, Sid James or Kenny Connor, his face is so expressive that he can just steal it. When given larger roles (Khyber, Screaming, Camping, Behind & Don't loose your head) he always stood out.
*****
Is Good !!
:)
+Greedville Post Office A personal favourite is from Screaming "Let's have a sift. I'm all for a good sift."
I absolutely love Peter Butterworth.
Most actors learn their craft at RADA. Peter learned his at Dulag Luft POW camp. Oh, and not just him. What a hothouse for creative talent that place was!
Totally agree!!!
Al those wonderful wartime chaps.. hearts of oak , undemonstrative but dignified men.. Seems as though they've all died out now.
I think the last WW2 Tommy has now passed away, last year I think, you're right such an amazing generation who we all owe so much.
@@cBearTV- You must be getting mixed up with WW1. Thankfully there are still plenty of fellas left from WW2 who saved us including Leslie Phillips who was in a couple of Carry Ons-Teacher, Nurse & Constable.
I never knew he was married to Janet brown ,another actor who you was pleased to see on t v or at a cinema
What a legend.
We've gone backwards in society everyone's so brittle these days
Just fantastic! What a character.
It seems that when I grew up he was a regular on early tv. Part of my long lost past....and very fond precious memories...thanks.
Rupert Davies FRSA (22 May 1916 - 22 November 1976) was a British actor best remembered for playing the title role in the BBC's 1960s television adaptation of Maigret, based on Georges Simenon's Maigret novels.
Peter was a fine actor, he was one of the stars in the carryons that you always knew his face but couldn't put the name to it. The carry on films were not as good if Peter was not in them or only had a minor role. His finest performance came in carry on abroad, playing the manic hotelier, he literally stole the show from an all star cast outshining sid and kenneth, no easy task! God bless you Peter Rest in Peace
beans and chippings sausage and beans sausage and chippings...there choices!
I couldn’t agree more! He’s was such an underrated star and my fav carry ⭐️ on along with Kenny C! My fav carry on is Abroad and Peters performance as Pepe was amazing! Loved him acting along side Kenny C in that movie too!
I see, I see p, you are very lucky mans.
You really think so
Yes small waist, big hip and boom booms 🤣🤣
This is your life, for one of Britain's favourite comedians.
Star of countless 'Carry On' films, and much loved stage actor.
And yet the first 15 guests are from his days in the RAF, and from the POW camp where he spent his war years.
Makes you proud to be British.
4:57 for a moment i though he was going to say here is the man that shot you down :-) didnt know butterworth was a war hero always played a good part in the carry on films
Many Gentlemen on here from a bygone era,
Wow ! , thank you for posting this episode , what an amazing man.
👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I met Mr. B. in Heathfield one day. He was in his car and asked directions - I couldn't resist telling him to " carry On to the junction at the top of the road, turn right etc." I just used the phrase once so as not to over do it 😃
He auditioned for a part in "The Wooden Horse", but was told that he didn't look the type ...
Wow. That was such a treat to watch!
Its nice hearing people speak with a little refinement as sadly speech and language has become so lazy today!
Love the chap who whips his pipe out and lights it! Imagine that now....😃
The chap is Rupert Davies, the famous actor. As Maigret he smoked his pipe. Maigret made him world famous!
“ I thought you were the store detective! “ 😂
Like all those who saw action in the war, he seems reluctant to make too much of it. Notice his expression of disgust at 7:24 when Eamonn Andrews is blathering on about him being a hero.
The lazy youth of today should watch this and see what really matters in life . And what real men and women are !
I agree 👍 I grow up with these real people.
Today youth & people are disgusting & idol layabouts.
I said something to a bloke who I knew back in 1995 when I was 18.
I said by the year 2010 the people of now will be lazy won't work earn money and do nothing.
Yet money they get is because they easy they do not know what hard work is.
I was proved correct.
I was lucky to be in a work for my money 💰.
I been out of work for 7 years now and trying
To get back after I had stomach cancer I am also not a scrounger.
Acting
@georgepointer1127 what does 'acting' mean as re this George?
He was up there with best RIP Peter
"Equality! Fraternity! Liberty!"
"I thought you were a store detective" 😆
One of my favs
My one abiding memory of Peter Butterworth was watching him perform a comic monologue on BBC tv childrens hour in the 1950s while fruitlessly waiting for a kettle to boil so that he could have cup of tea.The trouble was he had put the kettle to boil over a single candle which was woefully insufficient!
I'm glad someone else remembers that. I've been searching the net but have found nothing. If I remember correctly he was always sitting in a little nightwatchman's hut. Could it have been part of 'Whirlygig'?
A funny guy can make me laugh with a single line.
Of the family of four, The son is the only survivor. Emma passed away in 1996 aged just 34.
What a generation of men... Will never be seen again unfortunately
I love Peter Butterworth I cary on and doctor who
like the carry on ... with peter Butterworth... R.I.P..
Lovely man, always made me laugh
What a fantastic funny guy Peter was and what a hero ❤
i just love all the old carry on stars if they made a new carry on movie now in 2013 it will not be the same without the old carry on stars.
I look upon the millennial generation with renewed contempt. These men faced a real enemy. Today’s youth flinch at shadows as the current mass hysteria around the coronavirus nuisance.demonstrates all too clearly.
Always came across as a very modest man who didn't hog the limelight or was a show off in any way as so many of his contemporaries and fellow servicemen/women were...A completely different age when those like Peter and his generation didn't and wouldn't dream of bothering the doctor with 'mental health' or 'stress' 'anxiety' issues these guy's were literally putting their lives on the line fighting the Nazis getting shot down and even in captivity didn't feel sorry for themselves or would they be allowed to...
2024 and Britain is literally facing the biggest threat we ever have which is being fuelled and supported by those who hate us and everything about us...Tragic
Well deserved acknowledgement an accolades...
Amazing man.
was great as the monk in doctor who. That character needs to return to the series again.
Very funny guy in The Carry On films ! Thought a few more carry on stars would appear ?
one more thing would of been funny to see him play a german in the wooden horse :-) what a nice man he was
His son Tyler also became an actor.
the Meddling Monk!
Unusual man, as he could do comedy with serious hard face, serious rolls with a soft face, think he wasn’t a star, just a character actor, can never took him seriously.
Charming
Thank you so much u dont know what it means to me to see this wow wow wow
Brilliant actor and comic genius. shame no Carry On stars there.
There was terry scott
Yes particularly as along with Kenneth connor, he was Kenneth Williams' fave carry on co-actor.
@Durins Bane Yes he was, but Kenneth Williams loathed the showbiz award/self congratulatory type of thing and wouldn't have done it if asked, no slight on Peter at all - just one of his hangups.
Nazi POW to a comedic genius. Real talent.
Never saw the Carry On movie series. But I did liked him as Meddling Monk on Doctor Who
You've never seen a Carry On film??!! You should have a look mate, they're brilliant!
"I thought you were a store detective - shall I put the stuff back". 😄
3:54 The most English exchange ever.... quite
Only to those who don't know the English properly.
heros
strawberry mousse
Just cracked me up when I read your comment. Brilliant scene. 😂😂
Thank you!
Peter was a great comedy actor in the carry on film series. I found him very funny. He died suddenly in the late 1970s of a heart attack it's very tragic actors work hard during there working lives but they suffer from heart trouble because their hearts can't cope with the strain. Peter sellers is another comedy actor who suffered heart trouble. He died of a heart attack at the young age of 54 much too early to pass on.
L
anyone for chippings???
he sounded quite posh in real life i was surprised
It's called acting...................
He was part of the Great Escape and the Wooden Horse escape he was a code writer
Peter's daughter died 26 years later, just before her 40th, RIP
She died in 1998 when she was only 34 to be precise .... I tried to find how she passed but I could find nothing on Google
@@asceses1 It's a mystery - the family must have kept it quiet. I assume she must have tragically killed herself - terribly sad, especially 4 her Mum.
I thought this one was a bit strange, mostly people he hadn't seen in decades (fair enough, nice war service reunion) but hardly anyone from his showbusiness career and no family outside his marriage. It concentrated a lot about the war but virtually nothing after 1950 in showbusiness. Compare this to Spike Milligan shown aound the same time.
Yes it figures - he was a very private chap they say.
Does anyone remember Peter Butterworth in the film : The Day the Earth Caught Fire?
I do. One of my favourite b/w films, with a strong anti-bomb message.
classic mr fiddler
Now I see why there are no Carry On anecdotes about Peter.
They should have recorded the party afterwards
I saw the name Butterworth and thought "ah the bad guy from Charlie and the chocolate factory is going to admit it was all to test how honest they were"!!... But it's not that Butterworth, I never knew his name but have seen him in lots of carry on films.
wow
no doctor who references
Interesting. What year was this?
Department stores were so disorganised in the 1970s, everything was just thrown together randomly!
This is your life started when he was in the war! His childhood?
There weren't many of the carry on team there?
He was in catweazle and carry ons.
Sausage, beans and chippins
Does anyone know how or from what Peter and Janets daughter Emma died? .... so sad to hear of that
We must assume the family kept it quiet because she killed herself. Tragic - & especially sad 4 her Mum.
i watched this because i thought the man on you tube still was 1950s robin hoods little john not the carry on writer
Best generation in history
Ahh-HA! ., just after they ask over the 'Tannoy' ., image confirms it was a branch of 'Selfridges'. Curiously apt. Significantly after moi ZeFringe, had chosen marriage & another employer.
Peter looks appalled and really uncomfortable at the whole thing.
