Early anthrax ( upto state of euphoria ) both guitarist used marshall heads and cabs , the last marshall Scott Ian toured with was a jcm 800 , after that he switched to Randall ,after playing through dimes rig he switched .
First off: Stay well! Best wishes to you and your family in 2023! I always loved their tone. I was eating lunch at Sweetwater a couple years ago and bumped into Scott Ian there. Chatted with him a few minutes and got a couple pictures with him. Awesome guy! He was very generous with his time even though he was there on business, so obviously very busy. Anthrax was doing a recording master class. It was an amazing moment! I've been a fan of Scott's since I was a young kid growing up in the late 80's and 90's.
Charlie Benante wrote the riffs, no shit! I did know that Dan had become a very talented watchmaker, I wondered as to his whereabouts a while ago and came across his website. Fucking amazing. You got the sound pretty close Owen, not an easy one to replicate. And +1 for doing Suicidal Tendencies, their self-titled debut in particular. Studio setup looking sweet mate
I saw them for the second time in 1987 at the Royal Court in Liverpool with Testament. It was the night that they got a load of their custom Jackson guitars nicked from the tour bus. A few years later we found out that the bin bags of t-shirts that had been lifted were dumped in an area of the city and a bin crew found them and were wearing them to work for years later. Embarrassing for the city like, but it didn't really top the chaos of the recent Beastie Boys gig. For the time, I don't think anything can beat the opening chord of Caught In A Mosh and the palm mutes/bass run that follow. You've got to have a pretty bright tone to hear the picking songs like that. Great vid as usual. 🤘🤘
I found the No Drugs Jackson in a backstreet shop in Wigan a few years later, they wanted £750, I reported it to the police, as far as I know the only thing that was recovered
Big, big fan of Anthrax. I maintain that they had the best guitar tones (in the 80's at least) when compared to the other Big Four members. Serious riffage on Among the Living and State of Euphoria!
IDk, they were very good, but going up against the likes of Dave Mustaine, Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman is a toss up. Plus Kirk and James had a sick sound on Master of Puppets. I love all these guys, they are very good, but my personal favorite is probably Gary Holt of Exodus, dude is a monster, and Ill always argue Exodus and Overkill should get more mention along with the Big 4, probably should throw Testament in and just call it the big 7. If I had to pick a favorite Joey era Anthrax album it would be Persistence of Time, and for the Bush era We've Come for You All, that album is kick ass from start to finish, plus we get some extra Dime riffs, you can never go wrong there.
@@PxNxWxGxW Likely my second favorite Anthrax album, behind We've Come for You All. A lot of punk influence on Spreading the Disease. Plus I love Stephen King books, and The Gunslinger has always been my favorite Anthrax song and King character.

I went to see Anthrax at O2 Brixton Academy recently. Their music was part of my life in 80s. That info about Charlie written most riffs was in this week's Loudwire ......I finished recording Anthrax style guitar and I think the sound is mostly from the style of playing, then mixing and layering guitars in the track.

I heard an interesting thing back in the 90s, Scott Ian preferred using EV speakers in his cabs. That may have been a thing later on, after Among the Living, but I'm pretty sure he always claimed they were "better" because they were full-range HiFi speakers rather than guitar speakers. I think I got that from a guitar magazine (probably Guitar Player mag) when they started covering the big four. How about you do Deicide's Legion guitar tone. That album had a pretty killer tone. the debut was just Morrisound 101, but the guitars on Legion had something unique about them.

@@karrazaki89 metal zone to boost the front end of the heads - half the gain was from the metal zone and half from the heads - that’s how they got that searing distortion.
A buddy of mine worked on one of their late 90s albums and he told me that Charlie likes to use an old piece of gear called a rushing/dragging meter, or something like that. I'm sorry I dont remember exactly what it's called. But essentially it works kinda the same way a tuner works. The light meter starts to go one way if you rush and the other way if you drag. He said he would just keep his eyes on that thing and try to keep it within a certain percent.
A Skeleton In the Closet. That shit rips. Have you done a Deftones video? Like the Around The Fur/ White Pony era where Stephan Carpenter used a JMP1 and 8200 poweramp with stock Marshall cabinets? JB for the ATF and EMG 81 for WP. Plus Stephan has said in an Ernie Ball video that Anthrax was his favorite thrash band and that is what I thought of now. Carpenter still uses his JMP1 on the newer records still.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE unfortunately not Owen. Andy or Dorian ( living in Houston ) may well have them. I wore down your king of the couch demo, Some superb tracks on that. Ive got “Tock” on mp3 whick has some sterling fretboard acrobatics👍 I’ll drop the guys a message to see if the demos still exist on cassette and get back to you.
Probably one of the biggest parts of the rhythm tone was Scott Ian's picking hand technique. I have heard him say in an interview how his fingernails get ate up. That means he is digging in deep.
i just recently discovered after playing since i could pick the thing up (i think i was about 3,and somehow i knew to be easy on my uncles guitar) till bout 4 years ago, ( i'm 55, so a long time) that more than anything , i mean anything, the speaker cab i use effects my guitar tone more than any other piece of a piece of gear, oh, there was this one washburn super strat i had for a while, , it just had something about the pickups, or where they were spaced relative to the bridge, i'm not sure exactly, but that drasticly enhanced my tone, for the better, maybe insted of searching for artistgear, find out what the producer likes to use, and that's probably a more reliable method to find at least a starting point for your favorite tone,,,,and once you find what you were after, it will most likely sound like total ass when you try to play through it by yourself, it' lacking the rest of a band to enhance it,,, good luck on your journey
So apparently your video didn't show up on my sub list. Also I gotta say Persistence of Time is right up there with Among the Living imo, great tone and an amazing set of songs.
Megadave has also been using JB like forever, considering Livewire is basically Active JB while Thrash Factor is based on one but with additional input from the man.
For me the Spreading ... era is the best. Among the living is a bit too clean sounding for me. I think Ian used jcm800 super leads(maybe 50w in the studio?) with a TC electronic booster and he has a killer sounding Rhoads (the exception for Jackson imho). That guitar(the "NOT" Rhoads) has a full maple body as far as i remember from an old interview. There is some old video recording from a tour they did with Agent Steel and Overkill in the mid 80's where he has that "older" Anthrax sound.
Have you heard the tone on All that Remains' album "Overcome" it has a really cool scooped sound to it and I would like to see what you think of the tone.
I love Dan's old comic book and cartoon themed Jacksons. But man that PRS he had a while back, the 6-in-line headstock was hideous hahaha I also never knew he was only like 5 feet tall until this year
I have been a fan of anthrax since the begining , I hated the early stuff they did with John bush during the 90s , the only bush stuff I liked was music of mass destruction and we've come for you all , my favourite albums are as follows 1st for all kings . 2nd among the living . 3rd spreading the disease. 4th worship music . 5th state of euphoria. 6th persistence of time. 7th attack of the killer bs . 8th fist full of metal . As a drummer of 35 years I totally agree with Charlie , clicks sterilise metal just as triggers sterilise the sound of most metal they are used on ( I'm not hating on triggers , in extremely fast metal I think triggers have a place , particularly the bass drums ) However hearing acoustic drums getting hit hard in thrash and death metal music is beautiful , I think modern drummers don't know how to hit hard enough , back in the day you used to use wooden beaters ,click Pads on the bass drums , and good heavy 2b or 5b sticks , back in the late 80s and early 90s us drummers had to learn to hit harder than ever because when we did tiny pub gigs half the time there was no p.a for the drums ,so if you didn't hit hard you weren't heard .
I saw them open for Maiden supporting this album. I was seriously concerned about my hearing and not being able to hear Maiden as clear as I would want to. It was so fucking loud!!!!
@@CIRCLEOFTONE they actually used producer's Ross Robinson's JCM 800 and there as a big muff and a ts9 involved I think. They switched to Mesa Rectifiers after that record.
Are you sure about Dan using 81's? I vaguely remember him talking about preferring the very early 58's in his guitars to newer Emg's in some old guitar mag interview.
From a producer/mixing engineer perspective I can tell that most of the "tone" on an album comes from how guitars are mixed. Of course the initial tone when recording is important, but the mixing stage can make or break that tone.
Danny Spitz's ninja turtle rhoads V is the reason I play rhoads v's. Up to 15 rhoads v's since being a teenager in the 80's Still need a ninja turtle one though.
the "click track" is most definitely not like 100% to the grid even if there are back then (there's UREI 964 hardware but you get the idea). Speaking of the tone, i thought it was more like G12-65 or G12T-75 but nice to know it really is the G12-80, i wonder if Classic Lead can nail it tho.
The TC electronics line booster? Get a pepers dirty tree. It’s far and away the. Best TC preamp clone on the planet. The fortin 33 ain’t even close to How good that thing sounds ( the 33 is a TC clone as well if you aren’t aware)
Nope Dan used 2 Mesa Boogie Mark 3 heads. I saw them on the ATL tour. The Mark 3s had blue indicator lights while the prior Mark versions had orange lights.
Yep he used dozens of different amps over the years live. The mkIIc+, Mk III, Metropolis Plexi etc. But the one he modded in the studio was the earlier version.
Once Danny left, and before Rob came in, Charlie not only wrote, but played the leads. These would be the two albums Stomp 442 and Vol 8 The Threat is Real. Charlie is a monstrous drummer and a very good guitar player. I think Charlie had a really good tone on Vol 8, not their best album by far, but I did really like the leads on that album. Charlie, Scott and Frankie make up some really good rhythm parts. I miss Dan, he seemed like a genuinely likable dude. I think Charlie and Scott just run that band like no one but them has a say. Its terrible how the treated Danny, Joey, John and Dan Nelson, not to mention Danny Lilker and Neil Turban. They are very talented musicians, but seem like they are dicks. Ive heard some stories about them disrespecting military service members, something I could never support. But musically they are tremendously talented. I do think its kind of funny Scott cannot play a solo to save his life, but his rhythm parts are rock solid.
i always feel bad for Joey and Danny. Scott and Charlie said they wrote all the solos of Anthrax, and that got dan so mad. I wish they can forgive and get back together just once.. i miss Danny. Him, Joey and Frankie were best friends.
@@creamysauce7966 Danny def seems like a good dude. I say good for him, getting out of an abusive situation is never easy. Now he is free to chase his dreams, and it appears he is doing just that. I do believe he did play some shows with them around 2016, maybe there is footage of it on You Tube??

A buddy of mine worked on one of their late 90s albums and he told me that Charlie likes to use an old piece of gear called a rushing/dragging meter, or something like that. I'm sorry I dont remember exactly what it's called. But essentially it works kinda the same way a tuner works. The light meter starts to go one way if you rush and the other way if you drag. He said he would just keep his eyes on that thing and try to keep it within a certain percent.
Awesome info
A Skeleton In the Closet. That shit rips. Have you done a Deftones video? Like the Around The Fur/ White Pony era where Stephan Carpenter used a JMP1 and 8200 poweramp with stock Marshall cabinets? JB for the ATF and EMG 81 for WP. Plus Stephan has said in an Ernie Ball video that Anthrax was his favorite thrash band and that is what I thought of now. Carpenter still uses his JMP1 on the newer records still.
Awesome info. I would love that. Do you have any links etc to quotes from him re that gear?
Great chat Mr Gibbins. This is the stuff that drove us all insane in the Coach House days. Never forget your Welsh mun. Col ( bass )
Colin! Do you have your old blind justice demos on mp3?
@@CIRCLEOFTONE unfortunately not Owen. Andy or Dorian ( living in Houston ) may well have them. I wore down your king of the couch demo, Some superb tracks on that. Ive got “Tock” on mp3 whick has some sterling fretboard acrobatics👍 I’ll drop the guys a message to see if the demos still exist on cassette and get back to you.
I am pretty sure all the rhythm guitars were done by Scott in the studio. Spitz has done the leads.
Yeah no doubt
Always happy learning anthrax 🤘🤘🤘
Nice to see a new video from you. Still need the Necrotism carcass vid.
Yeah that would be a good one
Danny was the best of the big four. All over for him. Very underrated guitarist.
No joke, Scott Ian has some of the best tone our there.
Probably one of the biggest parts of the rhythm tone was Scott Ian's picking hand technique. I have heard him say in an interview how his fingernails get ate up. That means he is digging in deep.
Yep he's an absolute machine.
Anthrax's palm mutes made me want to play guitar. I'm still at it 33 years later.
Huge influence on me too
Ceremony band
Violence Violence album
bass is so good sounding
i just recently discovered after playing since i could pick the thing up (i think i was about 3,and somehow i knew to be easy on my uncles guitar) till bout 4 years ago, ( i'm 55, so a long time) that more than anything , i mean anything, the speaker cab i use effects my guitar tone more than any other piece of a piece of gear, oh, there was this one washburn super strat i had for a while, , it just had something about the pickups, or where they were spaced relative to the bridge, i'm not sure exactly, but that drasticly enhanced my tone, for the better, maybe insted of searching for artistgear, find out what the producer likes to use, and that's probably a more reliable method to find at least a starting point for your favorite tone,,,,and once you find what you were after, it will most likely sound like total ass when you try to play through it by yourself, it' lacking the rest of a band to enhance it,,, good luck on your journey
Man your tone in this sounds awesome!
Thanks man
Something about Jacksons makes them the most metal sounding guitar.
nice video and playing...thank you
Dan is without a doubt the top influence for me. Then Jeff then Dime
I have seen pictures of Charlie’s Guitar, it’s a black Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion model, the LP Custom of Jazz Guitars.
Lyle Preslar from Minor Threat had such a killer raw tone.
The tones they had from ‘Spreading the Disease’ to ‘Persistence of Time’ was ripping 😆
Agreed.
the guiar tone of cris degarmo and micheal wilton of queensryche
will you do Misfits or Samhain one day? 😀
Just found your channel and you got so much good content bro!
Glad you enjoy it!
So apparently your video didn't show up on my sub list. Also I gotta say Persistence of Time is right up there with Among the Living imo, great tone and an amazing set of songs.
Yeah it sucks when subs don't get notifications
Because Scott Ian has used the Duncan JB the entire time. Best sleeper bridge pickup EVER
Yep that's in the vid. Perfect for a boosted JCM800
Ministry, Muckypup, Sick of it All, Judas Priest. So many bands you can replicate.
Nice picking there my man!!! Excited for this one.
Cheers Finn. End of Heartache era Killswitch Engaged is next. The metalcore band neckbeards pretend to not like.
I love Dan's old comic book and cartoon themed Jacksons. But man that PRS he had a while back, the 6-in-line headstock was hideous hahaha I also never knew he was only like 5 feet tall until this year
Yeah it was an abomination.
The six-string that should not be
The War Dance riff is one of the hardest riffs of all time
One of the best thing ever in metal history
I have been a fan of anthrax since the begining , I hated the early stuff they did with John bush during the 90s , the only bush stuff I liked was music of mass destruction and we've come for you all , my favourite albums are as follows
1st for all kings .
2nd among the living .
3rd spreading the disease.
4th worship music .
5th state of euphoria.
6th persistence of time.
7th attack of the killer bs .
8th fist full of metal .
As a drummer of 35 years I totally agree with Charlie , clicks sterilise metal just as triggers sterilise the sound of most metal they are used on ( I'm not hating on triggers , in extremely fast metal I think triggers have a place , particularly the bass drums )
However hearing acoustic drums getting hit hard in thrash and death metal music is beautiful , I think modern drummers don't know how to hit hard enough , back in the day you used to use wooden beaters ,click Pads on the bass drums , and good heavy 2b or 5b sticks , back in the late 80s and early 90s us drummers had to learn to hit harder than ever because when we did tiny pub gigs half the time there was no p.a for the drums ,so if you didn't hit hard you weren't heard .
Agreed. So much tippy tappy gravity beats then it's triggered to sound like they are hitting a snare with thors hammer. It's so fake.
I saw them open for Maiden supporting this album. I was seriously concerned about my hearing and not being able to hear Maiden as clear as I would want to. It was so fucking loud!!!!
Could you maybe build one of those dumble kits from thegearpage or ampgarage and share your best tone that matches it
A guy near me makes clones. I'm in more of a selling phase though haha
First Korn album tone please 🙏🏼
Would love to know what was used
@@CIRCLEOFTONE they actually used producer's Ross Robinson's JCM 800 and there as a big muff and a ts9 involved I think. They switched to Mesa Rectifiers after that record.
Nailed it
New subscriber here, have you done a Pantera video yet?? Dime and EVH were the masters of unique sound.
No I've not done a Dime one. Has to be done.
Did Dan actually use an EMG 81 at the time? He was known for using the 85.
Danny Spitz's ninja turtle rhoads V is the reason I play rhoads v's. Up to 15 rhoads v's since being a teenager in the 80's
Still need a ninja turtle one though.
Exodus bonded by blood era?
the "click track" is most definitely not like 100% to the grid even if there are back then (there's UREI 964 hardware but you get the idea).
Speaking of the tone, i thought it was more like G12-65 or G12T-75 but nice to know it really is the G12-80, i wonder if Classic Lead can nail it tho.
their is a rumour in the internet that Dan used the celestion alnico gold speaker but i think he used the g12-80 to
The gold was not released back then. He may have used them since. I have one. Good bright speaker.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE can the alnico speakers do high gain metal tones or are they more for vintage vox tones
Among The Living rules!!!! \m/
Set up a band room and invite the three of them to come over and jam.
I like that Chorus, sounds like a flanger
I tend to make all my choruses slow motor style.
Is that boost Scott Ian used still available?
The TC electronics line booster? Get a pepers dirty tree. It’s far and away the. Best TC preamp clone on the planet. The fortin 33 ain’t even close to
How good that thing sounds ( the 33 is a TC clone as well if you aren’t aware)
@@truckguy3 Thanks I'll take a look at those.
What state are you in bro?
how about Andy LaRocque?
He emailed be back once then went dark. Haha
@@CIRCLEOFTONE that sucks, the guitars on "Fatal Portrait" are some of my favorite tones ever
I've always been a huge fan of seethers finding beauty in negative spaces album that guitar tone really sounded mean and sad.
Yep I think the old singer kicked out Liliker because he smelled bad. Haha. It's a pretty cutthroat band for sure.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE and he was taller than him. Plus Turbin didn't like the way he dressed
i always feel bad for Joey and Danny.
@@stephenhood2948 yeah, I agree that he's good doing what he loves. I know about the reunion, but it still didn't end well. I love Anthrax to death. I just hope one day they'll put the past aside and at least sit down, have a beer, and laugh with each other again.
