      This was atleast a hundred odd years before rifles came on the scene. If you think about it they had longer arms to swing a sword, more reach to strike the enemy meaning they could slice up their opponent before their opponent was literally within arms reach (unless they were using pikes).

    • @Stickyrolls123
      @Stickyrolls123 5 років тому +81

      They were using smooth bore Muskets. Most armies of the day did use grenediers. Larger then average men with the purpose,of firing a volley then running in with bayonets.

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 5 років тому +93

      If you have 3,000 giants it's probably worth the effort setting up a production line so you can arm them all with larger than normal muskets with better range, accuracy and stopping power. Give them thicker protection so they are more likely to survive getting shot and you probably have a very effective unit (if they were well trained and healthy.
      The problem is they were clearly hired because of Friedrich's fetish rather than sound military thought. Friedrich must have spent an absolute fortune finding, housing, arming and feeding them, money better spend on arming more regular guys instead.

    • @ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681
      @ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681 5 років тому +15

      A larger musket would have had no better accuracy, slightly better range, but since the accuracy was so bad already, battles were fought at less than 10% of the actual range of muskets. A .60 caliber musket does not require better stopping power. Its already huge. A thick protection against muskets was already used by cuirassiers, who would be on horseback due to the weight of the armor. Of course, an armor for a huge man would weigh more than one for short man, while the huge body has a worse strength to weight ratio. Meaning you would be better off with small guys in heavy armor.
      They were also not healthy, since they suffered from gigantism, and would die of heart attack where a normal man would merely be exhausted. And for the best training, you need the best minds to train. They were not chosen for their minds, but their bodies, like cattle.
      Lastly, there were no production lines. The first real production line was with Henry Ford´s Model T automobile a few hundred years later. The manufactories of the time were artisan craftmanship, with some specialization, for example a knife manufactory would have different guys for basic forging, final form forging, sharpening, finishing and shining, handle making, covering the handle with leather, sheath making, and possibly things like painting, gilding or lacquering. In practice, this was not more effecient than doing everything by hand, it just cut down education time for new workers, as they had less to learn at one go.
      So with muskets they would have been disappointing. However, units of grenadiers were already in use, where greater strength and longer arms would be actually useful, and these were seen as a kind of elite unit.

    • @JimGiant
      @JimGiant 5 років тому +29

      "A larger musket would have had no better accuracy"
      Would a longer barrel not lead to better accuracy?
      " Of course, an armor for a huge man would weigh more than one for short man, while the huge body has a worse strength to weight ratio. Meaning you would be better off with small guys in heavy armor."
      The taller you are (everything else being equal) the lower your strength to weight ratio but 3mm of protection will be a lower percentage of your bodyweight if you are scaled up because body weight will scale with the cube of height whereas the weight of the armour will scale by just under the square of height. Getting used to carrying an extra 20% of bodyweight is an easier adaption than getting used to 30%.
      "They were also not healthy, since they suffered from gigantism, and would die of heart attack where a normal man would merely be exhausted."
      Some of them did, most probably did not. The requirement was only 6'2 and almost nobody that height has gigantism even back then. Also I did say if they were healthy.
      "And for the best training, you need the best minds to train. They were not chosen for their minds, but their bodies, like cattle."
      I already acknowledged that. My point was replying to OP's view that larger soldiers are simply bigger targets without acknowledging that height also has it's benefits.
      ."Lastly, there were no production lines."
      Yeah wrong wording but I'm guessing there would be standardisation at this time period, each soldier having almost identical muskets and using the same size musket balls etc. If an individual soldier wanted a larger musket and larger ammunition this information would need communication to the blacksmith, the musket ball manufacturer etc, they would need to make another set of jigs etc and it would need to be separated from the rest, labelled and find it's way to the right person. Going to this effort for one person probably isn't worth the effort but doing this for 3000 people probably is.
      "However, units of grenadiers were already in use, where greater strength and longer arms would be actually useful, and these were seen as a kind of elite unit."
      Yeah I agree, I'm just saying that if you were smart about it even giving them muskets put them at an advantage over normal sized musketeers.

      No, they didn't need to put fake women soldiers into a usually fairly historically accurate game. No british cyborg women fought on the front lines, YET WOMEN DID FIGHT, why not celebrate real women who actually fought? That actually seems like a better idea to me. Men don't care about playing as women, we've been doing it for years. What PEOPLE care about is forced diversity for the sake of virtue points, what is actually so hard to understand about that?

People from the Eurasian steppes have been intermarrying for thousands of years, which means that Slavs have Asian DNA in them whether you want it or not. The Cumans and other Central Asian people fled to Europe during the Mongol conquests, changing the genetic and cultural landscape of Eastern Europe forever.
      " Genetic studies about phenotypes show this" Are you just talking out of your ass or do you just not know the meaning of phenotype? Phenotype refers to physical appearance, which can be deceitful when talking about genetic traits. If an African and a European have a child and that child looks 100% African, that doesn't mean that child is 100% African. Why then are Slavs considered a different ethnicity from Europeans of germanic origin? Because of the heavy Asian and Middle-Eastern genetic inheritance. You just threw a scientific sounding word in there to give some credence to your moronic statement.
      Grow a fucking brain.

      More surface area and body mass. It would be like trying to kill someone with a letter opener by stabbing them in the torso. You have a very small chance of getting hit in a vital spot. I' sorry that you have a Napoleon complex, but tall soldiers have more advantages, especially in modern times. Being an "easier target" does not matter because you barely fucking see each other anyway, you sling bullets over long distances. Taller people can take larger steps during marches and patrols, meaning less stamina being used up. They can carry heavier equipment, and large quantities of equipment. Usually they have bigger hands and more muscle mass meaning they can handle their carbine/assault rifle/machine gun better. Being tall also means you can get better shooting angles on people from high up. He didn't send them into battle because he was gay and used them as his personal wank material. Tall soldiers back then also had advantages though. They could use bigger more accurate rifles, reload faster, throw grenades further, and cause fear and panic. It has always been this way, even since Roman times. When the Romans fought the Germanic Tribesmen who were 5"8-6"0+ on average, they always had to try and overcompensate by only taking tall soldiers to match them. They never had enough and always got destroyed. And guess what? Germanic tribes won in the end. They invaded an destroyed Western Rome, then replaced it with their own order.

      @@beurteilung713 That's a lot of shit you've written down but it's mostly garbage.
      First off taller and bigger soldiers, unless they are those weirdos who only grow vertically not horizontally, make bigger targets, that's an undeniable fact, the bigger you are, the more margin of error a shooter has when they take aim at you, and it's not just limited to being fired upon either, you have higher chances of being hit by any projectile, fragmentation or even bayonets because you have a bigger surface area to hit, it's simple math.
      Sure bigger dudes can stride further and carry more weight, but then again they are heavier than normal dudes, even without the addition of equipment, they are gonna be burning more energy when marching and consuming more rations when not fighting, so you win some and you lose some in that regard
      Yeah bigger soldiers could probably wield longer muskets, not bigger since a bigger caliber wouldn't necessarily help with accuracy at that time, giving them an advantage in accuracy but then again they themselves because of their size would be bigger targets too, and eh being bigger doesn't make you reload any faster than a normal size soldier, you don't brute force the bullet down the barrel, it's the training and the drilling that makes you reload faster, not muscle
      lol you serious with that thing about the Romans lost to the Barbarians because they were taller? First off the ancient roman soldiers weren't even that short, they were like 5'7 average and they fought clad head to toe in heavy armour and in close formation with big shields so unless the germans had somehow fielded some 9 feet behemoths with full body metal armour, they weren't going to fare any better than their normal size counterparts, hell if height was the reason they managed to topple the Roman empire, why would they the germanic tribes flee from their homeland from the Huns, who were described as men short in stature?

    • @bigboss-vc9mf
      @bigboss-vc9mf 4 роки тому

    The "long guys" battalion is not as crazy as it seems. At his time soldiers where using muzzleloaders. For easy loading, the length of the gun needs to be shorter than the man. Huge soldiers could use longer guns. This would have provided this battalion with an extra reach. At a time when battalions marched straight into a battle, this would have been a great advantage.

    • @MDZPNMD
      @MDZPNMD 5 років тому +3

      @Blumberg Music
      No, it wasn't a German but a prussian regiment. The regiment was long gone before Germany united. The term "Lange Kerls" is also slang, it is not even the official term used by the prussian military at that time. The term "Potsdamer Riesen" is also a German name so your whole argument makes literally no sense at all and Tobias Ommer is right, even if it would be an exonym it's not necessarily wrong to use exonyms. It is also common to use exonyms as well as endonyms to refer to military units e.g. Foot Companions, Sacred Band, Immortals, French Foreign Legion, etc..
      Also the translation "Long Dudes" is not used at all, there seems to be no evidence for this translation. The German society that cultivates the traditions of the potsdam giants since 1900 ("Vereinigung zur Foerderung und Pflege der Tradition der Potsdamer Riesengarde 'Lange Kerls' e.V.") calls themselves "Long Fellows" and literally has "Potsdamer Riesengarde" in their name.
