The ancient military punishments like civil punishments for crime were so harsh because the rate of detection was so low compared to nowadays, if you could actually flee the scene of the infraction there was an excellent chance of getting away with it.
It was all word of mouth
@@mike04574 Yep, despite all those historical crime novels evidence gathering didn't really exist until the 20th century.
Before I watch, I just want to say how great all of your videos are. You always put up an insane amount of research into everything, and never fail to entertain. You're the true example of quality over quantity
Copies and pastes text into text to speech software
That's his voice
@@mercuryfillings8576 Go watch his first videos and try telling me that again. If you can't hear the difference, I don't know what else to say
@@dingo6101 same voice from the start and its is real voice. Wtf are you on about ?
@@dingo6101 Dude just makes up “history” on the fly too. There’s never even been a country called England. I dunno why he makes this stuff up.
Ah, Luigi Cadorna and his decimations. He is widely considered to be one of the worst generals of the First World War, and that's saying something. He wrote a manual on infantry battle in the late 1800s which stressed offensive action, that the spirit of the soldier, the upright action in moving forward would always "carry the day." 61% of all disciplinary action in the Italian Armies was carried out under his command, and he presided over 750 executions, the highest of any individual army command during the War. From June 1915 though November 1917, he hurled attack after attack against the entrenched mountain troops of the Austro-Hungarian Empire without proper training, proper gear for mountain warfare, or even the logistics train to keep the men fed and healthy.
Even after Italian troops had been repulsed multiple times, and the Italians were BEING supplied, the tactics never varied much. Twelve times in what came to be known as the Battles for the Isonzo River (yup...TWELVE!), in the same old way, Cadorna sent his men up the Alpine slopes, against entrenched Austrian mountain troops with artillery on the heights (they were so high that Italian artillery very often couldn't be angled onto Austrian targets, and even when they COULD, they more often than not took out Italian troops instead of Austrian), hoping that "the spirit of battle" would somehow come through; twelve times they would be hurled back down the slopes, leaving dead and dying on the bloody snow, to face their martinet commander...in the same old way.
Through his sheer ineptitude, half of the Italians, over 600,000, who died during the War, died here on the Isonzo under his wretched command. The Isonzo Redoubts were finally taken right before the Armistice in November 1918, but long after Cadorna was finally (and mercifully) sacked after his last debacle on the Isonzo in November 1917. I seriously doubt he gave a thought to, or lost any sleep over, the 300,000 men lost mainly due to his stupidity.
Flogging through the fleet was sometimes inflicted on those who committed extremely serious offences. The unfortunate man was ferried between every ship in the fleet to receive a requisite number of lashes. This was almost certainly a death sentence, even if the man had died mid punishment they were still required to continue with the admiralty's sentence.
The cat o nine tails is where we get the phrase “The cats out of the bag now!” The whip was kept in a bag on the deck and it was said when punishment was to be given.
thx for that cool fact i never knew :)
And the phrase yiu couldn't swing a cat in here
Hmm....I thought it came from when bucthers would fleece their customers out of pig meat and they wouldn't know till they got home and unwrap the package after taking it out of the bag and another source says its something to to with fur makers also cheating folks ...BUT I've also heard this one before too and according to the internet all three are right but your answer seems to be the most prudent and sensible out of them. Good job for sharing this Mr Dookmariot
@@sagebiddi you are right
@@hardcoreholman303 I was kinda shocked to see that typed . I rarely hear or see those words 🤣
Hey Unkown. I am wary to post this because this is by far one of my favorite channels here. Incredible research, presented in a very digestible and relaxing form. I am no history buff by any stretch of the phrase, but I have learned a lot in your videos. I just want to humbly note that there is quite a bit of repetition in the videos. I understand you have an "intro" paragraph(s) that covers some of the details, but often times they are details that are only expanded ever so slightly in the main description itself. Because the intro is often long and includes so much, I sometimes think I have somehow rewinded to something I already heard. All to say sometimes the structure of the writing is a bit difficult to follow. Again, I love your channel, and this is only meant as humble note, nothing more. I can't even imagine how long you spend writing these scripts. Thanks for the upload!
Well you're bound to repeat yourself when you copy and paste others' work and put it into text to speech programme...
@Dingo thanks for this very enlightening claim! You’re so smart for “knowing” this! Now please, leave this channel alone. Or, watch, enjoy and notice his writing style. I know plagiarism, this ain’t it.
This video appears to have a "summary/preview" bit before each section, which is repeated later on in the section. It looks like a little editing error to me. I don't remember it being a thing on other videos though.
@@taylorsmurphy Yeah that is true. However I have noticed this on a few other videos too. But my note is just about the writing, not the verbatim editing error.
I find it useful tho because I usually listen to these videos while doing something else and sometimes i space out when first says something the first time
I love your videos! Perfectly well researched and thorough. I always look forward to these
One thing about barrier troops in WWII: a lot of times they arrest fleeing Russian regular troops and condemn them into penal battalions.
Hey 👋 Nice Meeting You Here, Hope You Don’t Mind If We Get To Know Each Other Better Kieth?

Demanding no fall back creates a scenario where soo many Soviet’s got powD
Same with the Germans near the end of the war
The moment he said "Cat o' nine tails", I knew shit was about to hit the fan.

Yeah it would
Extremely interesting content and awesome narration I can feel that passion for history in your let's repeat that, AWESOME NARRATION!!! 💞💞💞💞💞💞
I wonder how often fleeing troops fired upon the barrier troops? I’m sure they were aware they were there so if they were scared enough to retreat attempting to save their own lives then they wouldn’t just willing ran into what is essentially a firing squad.
It was usually a rare instance and as he said, 8/10 they’d just be sent back or into a penal battalion of a repeat offender. It was very rare for the to shoot men, especially at Stalingrad as until operation Uranus, the 62nd army was out numbered 3-2:1 by the German 6th army group and every warm body was needed. They’d definitely would punish those individuals responsible for the retreat but not the whole mass of men who they did understand were mostly untrained boys.
almost 3 am , see a new Unkown!!!! Hell ya, sleep can wait
This is in my top 5 videos of Unknown 5
favourite channel
Incredible content as always. Loved the segment on 'death by 1000 cuts' gruesome stuff
Cool, a straightforward mention of Trotsky w/out extraneous detail. I know it's only a small mention, but I swear he seems to exist anymore as a spectral excuse for "what could have been". Just a studious little guy that would have avoided what was to come. But while I'm not "alternate history", I'd say there's a morbid argument to be made that Russia got "lucky"! Having nothing to do with his use of battlefield firing squads.
Drumhead trials were a huge part of European Industrial Military history, many nation states used them in times of war. From England to Nazi Germany, to Japan all had summary court martials were specific soldiers were blamed. This was always to make an example of the victims.

Shaka Zulu had his warriors dance on thornes to toughen up their feet. He revolutionized warfare in Africa.

If you’re looking for video ideas I would suggest the 5 greatest acts of loyalty in history.
The cruelty of humanity reminds me of this quote from Adolf Hitler: "I do not see why man should not be as cruel as nature".

I gotta say, I'm always looking forward to another one of your videos.
The Russians had such severe rules regarding retreating, fleeing, surrendering, deserting and disobedience that it sometimes invoked summary executions on the spot led Stalin (or some military official) to say, "it took a brave man to be a coward."
The Russians are much more clever about cowardice nowadays, with so many "getting lost" and "running out of fuel" lol.
well the french used it a bit in the first world war as well. there were cases where french officers shot their own soliders on the spot.
the italians in ww1 take the cake for shooting their own soliders lugi cardona took it to an absolute extreme.
Great content again. I just happened to be watching 1 of your older videos today and then got gifted with this
Well done! Always top notch content.
Love this channel. Simply excellent.
I'd take marooning on land over almost any one of those other punishments. To die in peace and solitude, my life in my own hands.
Ideal, really.
Marooning on a raft, however, terrible.
Til u realize the pistol wasn't loaded lmfao

Thanks for the upload! You used a fitting image when talking about keelhauling. It's a dutch ship with the name 'wreedheid', which means cruelty
You left out the gruesome death by wearing cheap polyester cloths and only being able to watch Brady Bunch re-runs.

I find it kinda funny that anyone in the red army who was taken prisoner when they went home after the war they were treated as traitor and put in gulags.

Do most incompetant miltary commanders in history
Damn, those article 15s I received don't seem so bad in retrospect!!!🙏🤔
I find it strange that the pirates would have no qualms about killing another person, but begin worrying about their soul if they were to commit suicide.
Back then, people were much more spiritual than today.
Religion is made up to control you. If you kill yourself, you waste my resources, I could have used you. So religion prohibits suicide.
You’re the best man!
