This is by far one of the best UA-cam channels I have ever seen. Highly educational and captivating, this is a great way to discover history. An excellent narrator with an easy to listen to voice. I'm going to act as Devil's Advocate, and postulate that the net affect of British rule of India was positive, possibly on the eradication of the Thugees alone. Forget about the legacy of Western infrastructure and education. Am I crazy?
Except it is estimated that the British Empire took a value of ~$45 trillion USD out of India during the roughly 200 years of colonial rule. Sure some legacies of The Empire are helping India today, but that extreme loss of wealth still effects India and her struggle out of poverty to this day.
@@maneatingcheeze I agree that the profit made on trade during British rule would have largely gone to Britain, that could have stayed in India IF you assume that same trade would have occurred had India remained independent. I don't know that would have been the case.
Also, almost all the exports from India were agricultural: cotton, jute, tea, coffee, spices, sugarcane, silk, opium, etc. It's not like there was only a fixed amount of these products. There was, and is, as much as anyone wants, and is able, to produce. I don't think there was much non renewable natural resources taken, except for some saltpetre and gems. That's not nothing, but probably more like a figure that would be lost in rounding in the GDP arithmetic.
