TWSBI IRIS Vac 700-R Fill and Twist Tip! / Fountain Pen

  • My TWSBI Iris Vac 700-R is a beautiful pen. The rainbow detailing is stunning. The Iris was a gift from my kids. It has become a favorite pen, but when I first started using it, I was so disappointed because it kept "stopping" writing for no reason. None of my other pens do that! I'm used to pens that seem to "always write." Maybe I'm just lucky so far. The TWSBI Iris was a more expensive pen than others I use, and it didn't write consistently. Even worse, once it "stopped" writing, it seemed almost impossible to get it to write again. I was convinced I had a defective pen, and I was really disappointed.
    I finally found a tip from Goulet Pens about the endcap, and that seems to have solved the problem. [Update - I am glad that many of you discovered this on your own or via the manual!]
    I filled the pen in this video with Pilot Iroshizuku Yama-Budo. It's a bit darker than the magenta I want, but the Yama-Budo is beautiful in this pen, writes like a dream, and has become my standard pairing for the Iris. Samples shown on office paper and Tomoe River (Hobonichi Techo Weeks).

    This is stated in the directions that came with the open. Plainly says to open the vacuum if you plan on writing for long periods of time.

      And yet there are a lot of people who run into this problem - and who probably don't stop and read the directions because they don't realize it will be different than other fountain pens they may have other than the actual filling.

    After you fill the pen, point the nib straight up, then withdraw the piston back to the edge of the ink. Put the nib back in the bottle, and push the plunger down. This gives most of my vac filler a much, much better fill.

    • @scorinth
      @scorinth 4 місяці тому

      Somehow, I figured out doing multiple cycles to increase the fill level but it never occurred to me that you don't have to pull the plunger all the way out and can stop at the level of the ink instead, so every time I filled it, I'd sit there pushing ink back and forth for a while... 😅

  • @alexbond03
    @alexbond03 5 місяців тому +1

    this is how all pistol fillers work. When the piston is all the way down, it locks the ink supply, which is why it's best for travelling, specially flying. When you want to write, you just open up the piston, and close it back after you write it. That's the beauty of Piston Fillers. Cheers

      @kaushik8315 Місяць тому

      So you need to unscrew the piston every time you write?

    The reason this pen comes with an ink stop is because air travellers can fly with this without the pressures resulting in squirts or leaks. Also, it prevents ink burps from erupting from the nib because of heat from the writer’s hand etc. This is a common problem with eye dropper filled pens or pens with large ink storage like this one. The ink stop helps eliminate this problem. I love it. This pen gives me the comfort of a very large ink reserve and the peace of mind that it won’t burp onto my work. I get mine filled to the top every time by using the TWSBI ink well. It is a handy ink storage bottle that guarantees a full fill when you use it to fill your VAC 700 pen. It is not needed but for just an additional $14, I bought one and it has served me well.

    • @johnnyragadoo2414
      @johnnyragadoo2414 2 роки тому

      I got the same TWSBI ink well, and it is really nice. Two strokes of the plunger gets it so full there are no bubbles, and the pen barely needs any cleaning. No ink on the section at all, and near-zero risk of spills.
      I've heard there is a seal or o-ring that can be removed to keep the vacuum plunger from sealing the pen, but I don't want to do that. I'd rather have the security of a completely sealed reservoir.
      It's not a good idea to carry the pen in a shirt pocket with the cap on the pointy end. Closing the vacuum plunger is sealing off the other end.
      Then, the 700 R is like a perfect infant with peace and quiet at both ends of its alimentary canal.

    I've heard that about the flow a lot, I found out that it is because of the stopper, that makes it better for flying so the ink doesn't spurt out, the vac has a stopper on it to prevent the ink from burping out and making a huge mess. I watched a ton of video's on this pen before I ordered it, I can't wait to get it. I love your ink pairing and yama budo is one of my favorite colors. Most if not all vacuum fillers (the TWSBI Vacs and Visconti's) have that "problem". I've even seen some pen owners try to spread the tine because they think the tines are too tight and not allowing ink flow - bad move. In any case, thanks for sharing your experience and educating people. BTW, LOVE the yama budo. I personally use pilot's tsutsuji which is also a rich red.

    I’ve read and heard this “secret” thing (opening the barrel to the feed) with most other vac system pens. I’m quite surprised you had so much difficulty finding out about it…but good that you did. It’s kind of akin to pulling the plug on a sink full of water, eh? Water can’t go anywhere while the rubber stopper is plugging up access to the drain. I fairly recently bought my IRIS for Appleboom in the Netherlands. Got the medium. They really are pretty. Thanks for the great video.

  • @animula6908
    @animula6908 Рік тому +1

    It’s creating a vacuum, so untwisting it lets more air in to press down on the ink instead of sucking it back up the feed. It’s just like when the water cooler glugs to suck in air because the water coming out has created a vacuum that sucks air in. If you could stop it you’d find the water would eventually stop coming out because the pressure has to equalize.

    Two suggestions: (1) Try Diamine Syrah if you want a well-behaved magenta with beautiful shading. I did approximately 200 wedding invitations with it, plus place cards, and it was a dream to work with. (2) Get a TWSBI VAC20A ink bottle. They cost just $15 and double the value of the VAC 700R pen. You'll get a 100% fill every time and the engineering is incredible.
