@@liamerick7262 Honestly the whole band was top notch : Oteil Burbridge, Matt Mundy, Jeff Sipe, and of course Top Jimmy,. Herring is no doubt a virtuoso and a very cool dude in general. I shared a joint and beer with him and Oteil more than once. Let's not forget the Colonel himself, he was unreplaceable and as talented as the singer is on their 3rd album he could never match the Aura of Col Bruce Hampton.
was just fondly reminiscing about how The Colonel's death was the most rock n' roll thing that's EVER happened. Something to be celebrated I think. Makes me really feel for guys like Jerry who just collapsed alone in his room at a rehab center. Col. Bruce not only died doing what he loved, he died at the encore of his own 70th birthday super jam. Fucking ROCK N ROLL
I saw these guys in the early days right after this show, followed them all in their different projects. The single most profound experience musically was watching these guys create magic.. changed my 18 year old brain.
Hey y’all. I’m from Atlanta and saw these guys all over, but one night they played the Variety Playhouse in Little 5. In the early 90”s. I was stage right next to some chick with super long, curly hair, ANYWAY the music moved me close to having set some record for moving\ dancing harder than I ever did before. This is when we were seeing Panic, the dead, the dreadful grapes, and all the Athens bands. Just so much great music!!!! A few years later I rented a room in Harold Kellings’s house and soaked that up 😆. The Code Talkers moved me hard at “Proud Larry’s “in Oxford, MS. Too....Lastly I was 7 rows away from the Colonel when he passed.....just wow.....he is Grease now. God bless him.
Im upstairs at club 121 knoxville smoking pot with Bruce trying to explain some stupid metal string skipping lick when he asks Jimmy to let me see his guitar !!!!!He did and I played it well enough for J to say I brought the heat . super highlight reel stuff for me . J Herring is one of the few , the proud , the insanely talented . Also pretty gracious to let me play his yellow strat during the break .
Awesome story man! It's always good to have moments like that in life. Those guys must have been so cool. He's such an amazing guitarist. You must have had the feeling of walking on water 🤸😇 after that encounter with those two legends.
Saw them several times in this era. Completely blew my mind. All these insane bassists came out at the time - Victor Wooten, Les Claypool, Bobby Vega, Oteil... Miss that time. Good times.
They are all SO young! So glad my wife Erin came across this this AM, Great way to wake up! Love each and everyone of these guys! Missing Bruce and here's a Happy Birthday a day late to him! The greatest Band EVER!
Yeah I have to agree. I lived in Little Five Points and had the pleasure of seeing ARU even before Jimmy joined (when they had Rev. Jeff on banjo). Except for Phil Lesh Quintet from 2000-2003, nothing that Jimmy or Oteil have done with the Allmans or the Dead comes close to ARU, and I have called the Grateful Dead my favorite band since 1980. My biggest frustration is that there really isn't a big audience for bands like ARU. Even the Phil Lesh Quintet had a smaller audience than Furthur - which is bass ackwards for me. Anyway, I love ARU. So glad we have youtube. Last thing - honorable mention to Frogwings.
Just stumbled on this! I remember Hampton from 1968 in Atlanta playing in Piedmont park with other bands as the "Hampton Grease Band". The music was always free and we probably were passing joints the previous band threw out from popcorn boxes. He was challenging and he was fun. We loved to interact with him and he would give us hell and we gave it back, he'd thump the amps to make the reverb tanks make crashey spacey sounds. He might have an egg beater on the microphone or maybe a washboard or whatever. Sometimes he'd shave an "H" on the back of his head. I don't remember if he was the "Col." back then, but the way he commanded the stage, it fit. Now he's gone doing what he loved to do. Adios Hampton!
Saw them at Ziggies in Winston Salem NC around this time. Had never heard of them and just decided to go and check them out. My buddy and my jaws were on the floor! What great surprise!
It is challenging to have both speed and accuracy, and these guys definitely have both. Drummer's control is exemplary and the scattin' by the bass player is really something. Thanks to The Colonel, sad ending to a great career...EdADrummertoo
Went into a bar in Statesboro Ga in 1991 and noticed as I was getting beers that this band was leaving scorched earth in their wake and the guitar player was outstanding. Turned around to Col Bruce, Apt Q257 , Oteil from Egypt and of course Jimmy Herring. It would be my first of many many Col Bruce shows. Only the Col can successfully pull off a sport coat onstage and then actually pass away onstage. Legend.
I saw the Col and these guys in Athens a few times at the Georgia Theater in the early 90's. Always real impressive. There were a few bands around that time that were really jamming and hitting all the notes - these guys, Allgood Music Co, Athens Grass just to name a few. A lot of people were really into Dave Matthews and Widespread at the time but I thought Col/Aquarium rescue unit and Allgood were better at jamming.
First time I saw them was July 1989 at The Nick in Birmingham. They opened for Widespread Panic. I saw them quite a few times in total and they were always phenomenal. Good times back then late 80’s to mid 90’s!!
I just saw aru in Athens last weekend and they were killer!!! you can't beat the colonel! no to mention all the talent on stage. I believe they are coming out with a new album
My favorite group at their height. Bassist that can scat sing better than Ella Fitzgerald and outplay Jaco Pastorius, and sing at the same time. My favorite guitarist (other than Jeff Beck) in Jimmy Herring. Plus, best jazz mandolinist other than Chris Thile. Drummer Jeff Sipes is phenomennal. It's 30 minutes of bluegrass, jazz, funk, and a cross between Weather Report, Nickel Creek, and....
The following year Matt Mundy recorded some mandolin tracks on ‘Pickin up the Pieces’ for Widespread Panic’s third release ‘Everyday’ that was released March of ‘93. That was a wonderful time for live music fans in the southeast.
He was in the movie Sling Blade that I have seen 100 times. Now it makes sense with Billy Bob Thornton, and Dwight Yoakam being musicians too. I hope BBT doesn't see this comment, he doesn't like when you take about his movies when music is being discussed LOL. If you have seen his interview a few years ago, you'll know what I mean. He got pissed at the interviewer for asking about his movies, when he was supposed to talk about his band,.. 🤣
For the record (see below) - Oteil is not in "Ted. Trucks" Band.... That's KOFI Burbridge, Oteil's brother on keys in TTB... Oteil is also in some other band with Garcia or Weir or one of those guys... See him at a ballpark near you this summer (2017) on tour. This weekend he is very busy playing all over NOLA at the night time JazzFest shows.. RIP Col.!
One of the most musically gifted bands to ever walk a stage
Whoosh.
jimmy herring, enough said!

wow. this flew under my radar for almost 3 decades? unreal.
Followed Col. Bruce since I was 18 years old.. I am 63 now. Incredible man and great musician.
RIP Colonel Bruce. This video is a testament to his greatness.

This band changed the way I heard music 20+ years ago.
They are the reigning champs. Undisputed.
The Colonel at 18:54 cracks up Sipe and Otiel ...spirited hilarity unleashed.
Oteil and Jimmy are both doin great things now but I really feel like this is where they belonged.

Dharm Khalsa On point. they need to reunite something baaaaad. Also holy shit, everyone always forgets about frogwings!
And one day you will too. Perhaps not soon enough.
Guys I think that person might have been playing into his character, a la "Primus sucks."
Caleb Sackmann Jeff sipe is doing well too .
Colonel knew how to form a band, incredible!
Absolutely stunning music from the mind of an extraordinary guy! Keep up the awesomeness, Col. Bruce!

Epic band! One of the best ever!
I miss Bruce & Co. etc., etc ... Used to catch em's at lil' 5 pts. pub and the harvest moon saloon back in 84. RIP CBH🤩
Thanks! I followed this band around in 92 and 93 and unfortunately never recorded it.
Most excellent! Thank you for sharing!
