After 22 years on the road I was forced into a situation where I had to learn how to do a split sleeper berth. I’ve always been on paper logs since I’ve owned a glider since before the Elog mandate went into effect but I’m not a good liar as far as running 2 log books and found this video tonight to help me understand how it works and do it correctly. This was the best explanation I’ve found.
Your 2 hour break DOES pause your clock as of 2023. It may not have when this video was released, since I know there were some rule changes a few years ago.

I can think of 2 good uses for this. 1. To start your route or 2. To spend less time "sleeping" and more time mid shift on a break instead of 30 minutes. I'll explain incase that sounds useful, but first to shoot down anybody trying to gain drive time... The time between the two 8 hour SB resets will equal the time between your normal 10 hour resets... exept your only using 13.5 hours of your 14 hour clock (8 and 2 but no 30 minute break because it's included in the 2 hour part, as long as you don't go 8 consecutive hours on duty) ...anyways... you can't gain time unless you really work that 30 minutes per shift. Sooo to start your route. If you were up for 6 hours waiting on a load. You can take it, leave, shut down 4 hours later to sleep "8 hour SB reset." Get up and have 10 hours on your 14 clock and 7 on drive time. Drive 5 hours and stop to rest/eat/GO SHOPPING/etc for 2 hours. Those 4 fell off. So now you have 6 hours drive time and 7 left on your 14 clock. Next stop could be your regular 10 hour rest or keep rolling your long breaks and short bed times. I left out pre and post trips... so they will eat your 14 clock.

I took pics of my eld last week at the start of each split to try to figure how much time I'd gain after each break, then another pic after each break to track what was gained. FYI You don't necessarily have to do an 8-2, 2-8. You can do any combination between 2-3 Off and 7-8 SLEEPER. For ex. 2:20 OFF and 7:40 SLEEPER. As long as it totals 10 hrs.
That was great and it worked good being tired cuz you explained it slow cuz let's face it most people are watching this while they are driving to the shipper or receiver hoping the can work some magic

This is the very 1st explanation I have never come across that I can actually understand..... The hours do jump around like a spider on its Web.... And I do not like that part of it but at least I can follow your examples... Thank you for taking time out to do stuff like this for people like myself
@@wwbbadventures this is very interesting explanation of HOS for drivers. But I am curious, did you make a mistake in your last example at 16:35? Your example at this point you have a 2 hour break, 1 hour on duty not, 3 hours driving and the 8 hour berth for a total of 6 total hours on duty. You then said you have 8 hour drive time and 2 hour of on duty not driving time. Wouldn't that make it a total of 16 hours on your 14 hour clock? 2+1+3+8+2=16? Yes you can get in 8 hours of driving since you only have 3 total before but if you do that wouldn't you need another 2 hour break or would you need another 8 hours berth time to reset the 14 hour clock?
It is very possible I made a mistake. I will have to watch it again. It has been a min since I made this video. Thanks for letting me know either way. It was late when I recorded this and had been a long day. I should probably do an updated one that is a little newer.

Great explanation and we could easily get confused. However the guy did miss one thing which is crucial and that’s the little button on the main HOS page The one that says “will pair SB” you must press, tick the box for all of this to work, otherwise it won’t and you will have to revert back to the full 10 hr sleeper berth rule only. I got that little snippet of advice from another instructor on UA-cam. BTW that applies to Omnitracs. Good luck guys.

You DO NOT get enough REST & It Locks You Into Only Being Able To Drive A Certain Number Of Hours Instead Of Having A Full Drive Clock At The BeginningOf Your Shift. My Advise, Just Drive Your Normal Available Drive Time & Stay In Touch With Dispatch To Make Them Aware Of Anything Detrimental To The Load.
As a flatbed driver I usually spend well over 3 hours every day working and not driving. I feel like it gets more complicated in my situation because my 14 hour clock is what limits me, not my 11. Considering how the 2 hour break doesn't stop my 14 hour clock, i feel like i could be robbing myself of more time. What good is my 6 hours of extra drive time if I only have 2 hours left on my 14? I feel I could seriously mess up my week trying this so I've always been hesitant to try haha
I also drive Stepdeck and I run on a split probably 75% or the time for that same reason. I hate when my 14 hr clock limits me. So I run on a split so I don’t lose my drive time.
This is the best explanation but how do you calculate your on duty hours you're going to get back? It is probably the same way but I have a question I don't do a lot of on duty time unless I'm driving I usually go to sleep at bertth do you get any of that time back if you log it as sleeper berth?

Will I just take the next 5 hrs to keep it rolling, or I still need at least consecutive 7 hrs sleeper time for it to work? After all, DOT wants to make sure driver to have 7 hrs continued sleeping time?

I have always calculated between the breaks then subtract from the full clock, I read the dot book but was confused untill a driver showed me on paper log when I first started driving. Dot book makes it confusing I guess because I couldn't see it

Pretty sure the 2 hour break not stopping the 14 has changed now. If I have 5 hours left and I park for 2 my 14 will run that 2 hours until I hit my 2 hour mark and immediately returns to 5 hours.

Ok so I started from a fresh 14. Im now at reciever with 2:30 left on 11 and 14. Im now in sleeper birth. What are my options? Does 2 hr in sb pause my 14?
I have a question I came in with a fresh caught and I drove for 5 hours and 6 minutes if I go into the Sleeper Berth for 8 hours how much time does that give me in the morning of DriveTime right now I have 4 hours and 54 minutes of driving time left and 6 hours and 21 minutes on my 14-hour clock
@@wwbbadventures one more question whats the purpose of using this when running out of hours or if youre trying to rush to a location it can be a bit confusing
A couple of good examples of when I've used this is when you are on a tight load that delivers in 4 days. When you use the 8-2 split, it removes the need for a 30min break, so you can get to the receiver 1h30m sooner than if you were doing 10hr in the sleeper and taking 30min breaks. The other situation I like to use it is when I know a shipper/receiver will take 2hr-3hr, so I plan to get there in the middle of my drive shift, go off duty during loading/unloading, that way I only have to take 8hrs off that night instead of 10hrs. It's really useful if you run consistent loads, and you know your shippers/receivers/customers. Also if you team drive, you can alternate 8/2 with your codriver and avoid both of your 30min breaks to get across the country pretty quick. I would assume that a lot of high priority or high value loads have teams that alternate this way to avoid unnecessary stopping
Eugenio Rivera I usually use this when a shipper or receiver would take to long and get me close to the 8hr mark. So say a shipper takes 6hrs to off load you, then I would just hang out another 2hrs and activate that 8 hour break. Then start running. Rather than start running after the shipper has held you up for 6hrs and you now only have a few hours left to drive. Hopefully that made some sense.
I know this is an old video, but towards the end you were counting your 2hrs. off duty towards your 14hrs. You were legal, but you still had 2 more hrs. if i understand this correctly. Am i right or wrong? I thought i was grasping it until the end. Thanks for the video and any response.
At 13:45 , you said 7 hours of driving is left after 2 hours of off duty , that is fine. But can he still take 2 hours of on-duty after that as you mentioned in the video because: 1 + 4 + 2 + 7 is already 14 which is the max for shift. Kindly reply . thanks a lot for the clear explanation.

September 2020 FMCSA changed the rules. The short break, either 2 or 3 hours, DOES pause the 14 hour clock now.

What about if you do the 8 hour break first and then the 2-hour break. you get the hours behind the 8 hour break too or no??

At 55 years old I need all the sleep I can get so I always take a 10 hour break and sleep like a baby so I’m fresh the next day .

The new ELD that I got will add hours to my clock after my 2-hour break. It does not wait for my 8-hour break to occur. Is this correct?

If I take my 30 minute break before my 8 hours are up, does that effect my split sleeper?
I drive mostly local. Don't need to worry about this. Once in awhile I'll have to do a overnight

I have a question I came in with a fresh caught and I drove for 5 hours and 6 minutes if I go into the Sleeper Berth for 8 hours how much time does that give me in the morning of DriveTime right now I have 4 hours and 54 minutes of driving time left and 6 hours and 21 minutes on my 14-hour clock
It stops ur clock and once u get the 8 hrs SB ...will give u the remaining hours to comple the 14 hrs shift and 11 driving
I do 8 hour first sometimes... Then eventually do a 10. The REAL hard part is tracking recaps of splits

Yes, but it can be off duty or sleeper berth. Or a combination of the two.
@@wwbbadventures one more question whats the purpose of using this when running out of hours or if youre trying to rush to a location it can be a bit confusing
A couple of good examples of when I've used this is when you are on a tight load that delivers in 4 days. When you use the 8-2 split, it removes the need for a 30min break, so you can get to the receiver 1h30m sooner than if you were doing 10hr in the sleeper and taking 30min breaks. The other situation I like to use it is when I know a shipper/receiver will take 2hr-3hr, so I plan to get there in the middle of my drive shift, go off duty during loading/unloading, that way I only have to take 8hrs off that night instead of 10hrs. It's really useful if you run consistent loads, and you know your shippers/receivers/customers. Also if you team drive, you can alternate 8/2 with your codriver and avoid both of your 30min breaks to get across the country pretty quick. I would assume that a lot of high priority or high value loads have teams that alternate this way to avoid unnecessary stopping
Eugenio Rivera I usually use this when a shipper or receiver would take to long and get me close to the 8hr mark. So say a shipper takes 6hrs to off load you, then I would just hang out another 2hrs and activate that 8 hour break. Then start running. Rather than start running after the shipper has held you up for 6hrs and you now only have a few hours left to drive. Hopefully that made some sense.

I know this is an old video, but towards the end you were counting your 2hrs. off duty towards your 14hrs. You were legal, but you still had 2 more hrs. if i understand this correctly. Am i right or wrong? I thought i was grasping it until the end. Thanks for the video and any response.

At 13:45 , you said 7 hours of driving is left after 2 hours of off duty , that is fine. But can he still take 2 hours of on-duty after that as you mentioned in the video because: 1 + 4 + 2 + 7 is already 14 which is the max for shift. Kindly reply . thanks a lot for the clear explanation.

Hi, i think the example on min 13:53 is wrong since u get 7 hrs on duty and driving and u state 9 hrs on dury. Where should be 7 hrs both ... Good video
