I agree with the other drivers in here. Anytime you step out of your truck for any period of time you should log out completely. As soon as someone else turns that key and starts driving, even into the shop, if you're logged in, it's gonna credit that time to you because the computer recognizes you as being the driver who is logged in. The computer will not recognize that a mechanic is driving your truck. I always log out completely when my truck goes in the shop and I always log out completely when I park the truck and go home. That way If another driver steps into the truck and drives it for some reason it doesn't count against my log. Also once there is time recorded on the drive line, the company log technician cannot remove that time and it will count against your clock. Another detail that I have learned about the log Is that when your hours are running down If you have less than 14 hours left on your 70 hour clock, you can not split your sleeper berth. Very inconvenient when you're trying to get home at the last minute.
The last company I worked for had a policy. When you park at the shop / yard, you must log out of the ELD. Just for the reason, the shop may snag the truck for maintenance.
NOTE: Hard lesson learned…log out of your ELD if your truck is destined to go in the shop. If we’d been aware of that then whole thing could have been avoided. But in the meantime, it did help us learn more about splits. 😉 Werner…if anyone is reading this…how about mentioning this in orientation? Turns out this happens to a lot of rookie drivers.
In addition to logging out of the tablet, send a free form message saying what shop the truck is in and the shop's phone number. There have been occasions when the log department has called shops to verify.
A few things. From midnight until the mechanic took the truck, you logged as "off duty" and since you didn't show the prior days log, we can only assume you were "off duty" longer. You could have changed that time from midnight to same five (5) in the morning to "sleeper berth", then the time between when they took the truck and when they brought back, to "off duty". Stay in "off duty" for an hour or so after, then go back to "sleeper berth". You then would have completed your split, take your dispatched load on its merry way and still go home with no issue. As many have written here, the best way is to log out but if you forget, then adjust your times to compensate for the split. Just for the record, unless it's a company rule, you can adjust your log (except drive time) as you see fit.
Thank you! Kevin actually was in sleeper. Then changed it to Off Duty. Seems that backfired. He was sleeper/off duty for 48 hours! Still seems confusing. :-((
I had similar problem when truck was in shop (and driven by mechanic) When I was off and at home. After that, I went off duty, logged our of tablet and turned it OFF. Since started that process, not further problems.
This happen to me as well at the Pennsylvania terminal.. I was so n sleeper berth for about 20 plus hours waiting in line to get my truck checked out.. then finally when I got in I creep my way in and the whole time I didn’t know they had it on drive mode.. which screwed up my run for the next day so yea..
When you went on personal conveyance that is technically "off duty" status. It shouldn't use any of your clocks-8/14/70. It's like driving your "personal" vehicle. That's what line 5 is specifically for. They're wrong for writing you up.
@@TheJoyofTrucking There isn't a split though, because the time you were waiting doesn't count as on duty, and the reason it started your 14 hour clock was because of the movement the Maint. shop did.... This should've been adjusted and the write up wiped as soon as you told them that the reason the 14 hours started was because the shop tech moved the truck, not you!

Too many problems with split breaks. I never split break. When u log out of the tablet for truck work, when u come back and log back in it will say....there has been unassigned drive time do you accept or deny. Click deny and a window pops up and asks why. U type you were off duty, logged off device and mechanic drove the truck. Even PC you are only allowed up to 150 miles or 3 hrs after that it clicks over to drive
Yes!!! And….we had our home time further than that a couple times. It kept saying ‘You’ve exceeded’ your limit.’ We called in. They said, “Just keep driving.” Lol.
Nope, you needed to take the 2nd part of split (7 hours). Could have gone into SB on ELD and put note on dash saying DoNot Move in SB, but dont sign out. Then drive your car home and dont leave a paper trail (credit card, ATM, etc)…
That's really weird when I take truck into shop and mechanics drive my truck it gives me the option to reject it. Basically saying it wasn't me driving. Sleeper berth and off duty are Basically the same I'm not sure why she said that. Interesting.......You will be fine man. Stay safe out there.
So did logs fix your time to off duty on your logs. I noticed it showed you were off duty and not in sleeper berth while showing a copy of your log that day.
Been there done that. the second half of split must be taken in sleeper berth. Makes no sense for me because I ended the day at my home terminal and signed out off duty. Two days later got a call from safety that said I had to take my second longer break in sleeper. In fact they said if I went into sleeper and came back two days later it would have been good.

When I worked for CRST with the Qualcomm system they did have that! However the Mechanics don't give a shit and 90% of the time would not switch it.....
100% the simplest solution, if you are going to have someone else get in your truck while you are away, logout of the ELD. In the Omnitracs system, you have to go to the off duty tab to select Personal Conveyance. I’m pretty sure I’ve went on PC (more than once) to find parking once my 14 hour clock was up. I heard no complaints from my company about it. There is even a drop down message I can select “Leaving Shipper/Receiver for parking” I can select under the PC menu. As long as “pair with sleeper berth” is checked, the 14 will continue to count down in the negative, but once 2 hours go by in “off duty” (PC included) or “Sleeper Berth”, the 14 hour clock goes back to the time you went into those non-on duty or driving statuses. So either it’s not an issue in Omnitracs or not an issue with my company. I don’t know which. I never have to “complete the split” if I chose to complete a 10 hour break instead and get my full 11 & 14 back. Completing the split only matters if I want to “drive” again. PC is “off duty”. In theory, from the moment you went to off duty (PC or plain off duty) after 10 hours, your full 11 & 14 should be back. I’d imagine if I stayed in PC 34 hours, I’d get a full 70 back. I know for a fact I’ve used PC multiple times in the middle of a 10 and 34 and it doesn’t delay or complicate the breaks. I’ve gotten no complaints from my company. My company will take away your PC privilege if you try multiple times to use it to further the load. You have to use PC legitimately. It appears to me, the Werner system is very much more complicated than the Omnitracs system. The simple rule I was taught was that you can be “on duty” forever. There is no limit. You just have to have a 10 hour break before you can “drive” again. And that can be split into 2/8, 8/2, 3/7 or 7/3. Whatever portion of on duty and drive time you used before your last break, you get the remainder of the 11 & 14 clocks to use once you come off that break. If you used 10 minutes of drive time and 30 minutes of on duty before taking a 7 hour break, you have 10 hours and 50 minutes of drive time and 13 hours and 30 minutes of your on duty time to use after that 7 hour break. If you use up all of your drive time before you take the 3 hour break, you unfortunately only get 10 minutes of drive time and 30 minutes of on duty time to use before you have to take another 7 hour break. This is why most that do splits try to split them more evenly.
Haven’t put it in new truck yet. On Kenny we were happy with it. There isn’t much chatter. There is a lot swearing when there is talk…lol…but we think it’s good safety equipment. We had a trucker warn us about a broken down car coming up in our lane. We warned others about an accident that happened right in front of us on I-25. We think it will be worth it’s weight in gold if we are ever barreling towards a very bad situation. We turn it off at night at the truck stop. We haven’t used it for ‘socializing’ but as safety tool. You can buy it with points at Love’s. If you do decide to get one at Amazon we’d appreciate if use our link below. Thank you! Let us know what you decide. And if you get it what you think. :-)
EVERY Truck should have a CB!!!! GET ONE! It's the only way we can communicate with each other on the road! Hazards, speed traps etc..... I always love the guy that turns the CB on once he gets in the traffic jam to ask what's going on, 🤣
I always log out when mine goes into the shop so when they drive it I can login check and reject the drive time they drove my truck because sometimes they test drive it around the parking lot if they're trying to get a fault message on the dash or something.
Any time your truck is down due to breakdown you go off duty because you have no knowledge of how much they drive it to see if it is fixed they may have your truck for multiple hours and if you are not on line 1 you will loose hours
That's a lie. I had that happened to me when I was in Ohio terminal and they modified on there end and erased it from my logs. I hate when they make u look bad when they can take 5 seconds on there end
It's too bad you didn't know how to fix this before you went into an unchangeable violation. The 2.5 hours in the shop can begin a split, the time you were waiting can finish the split, as you explained IF you had just waited another hour and a half before moving out. Change that line to sleeper and wait til you get your hours back. Call dispatch and tell them the shop screwed up your clock and you can't leave yet, they need to reschedule the pickup time or give you a different load. Of course, now that you're aware of how your day can be screwed up by someone else moving a truck, this won't happen again. Keep on Truckin.
Kind of funny.....different subject but I must have 7 or 8 written warnings for refusing shag loads....will not drive a truck for less then minimum wage which most shags work out to be....
The common mistake is thinking that you are splitting your work clocks...(14&11). You aren't. You are splitting your rest clock. I know it sounds like the same result, but if you had this in mind, you wouldn't have made the same mistake that you made.
They can be challenging, especially these type of nuances. But, truthfully...we love OTR for the ability to see the country and visit with family and friends all over the country during home time.
This information is not quite accurate. Some of these log rules are set in stone by the DOT. Some of the lesser components of the Log are up to the discretion of the motor Carrier. For example the company I work for allows us to edit our logs when it comes To off duty or on duty or sleeper berth time. We do not have to get approval. That is left up to the discretion of the driver. We are given the ability to edit our logs going back about 36 or 48 hours. Here is how the split 10 hour break works. It can be split into an 8 and 2 hour section or it can be split into a 7 and 3 hour section. The larger number of hours must be in the sleeper berth. The smaller section of hours must be no less than 2 hours and can be logged as off duty or sleeper berth. To help myself, to maximize my clock, If I know I am going to be down for a few hours getting unloaded or something, I put myself into the sleeper berth. This way if I decide to split I am already on my way to completing that split. The order of these sections does not matter. It can be the small section of time 1st or it can be the large section of time 1st when the 10 hour break is split.
When someone else gets in that truck and drives it mechanic or not they have to LEGALLY LOG its against the Law to DRIVE on Someone else's LOG. SO BAD rules that Mechanic didn't Log in. Notify FMCSA
Lol! That’ll be a PhD. Just kidding. You’ll figure the basics out pretty quickly. Just weird situations with that split can get confusing…but other drivers are doing a fine job explaining in the comments. Be sure to read them. ;-))
The 14 hr clock is like a regular jobs 8 hour day; the 70 would be like the regular jobs 40 hr work week. The 11 hr clock is just the max u can drive in your 14 hr day.
Ive been driving for a year now and I consider the ELD logs the largest lie in any industry. Other then when I'm driving or when I'm not driving, the government has no right to know any of this information. What difference does it make if I'm fueling? Or, where i take a break? Hell, given that nonbody performs pretrips when they wake up at a truck, that information is BS too.
I do a pretrip before I move the truck every time, even if I'm at a shipper loading/unloading, you never know if someone pulled your 5th wheel Pin. Anyone who isn't doing a Pretrip shouldn't be driving!
Yes. It’s confusing. The mechanic driving it counted as ‘driving time’. With that in mind, Kevin didn’t do the ‘split’ correctly. He thought he could go on personal conveyance without having to finish out the split. But alas. That’s not the case. :-((
That makes sense now plus Kevin would have pulled over for a few more hours he would have been safe but he would also have gotten in trouble with you for being late for home time
If you do a split break even when you go on home time you need to put it in sleeper or you'll go into violation. You can change it from sleeper to off duty. Its an odd thing with the tablet and DOT.
This shouldn't be a write up! The mechanic should have set it in Maint. Mode so that it didn't put you on duty! Once you told the company about it, the 2 blips from the mechanic driving should have been reverted back to OFF DUTY as you WERE OFF DUTY! you didn't move the truck, the shop did.... to me it didn't look like you hit the 11 our the 14 if the log didn't log the Maint. guy putting it in drive....
After the mechanic brought your truck out, instead of putting it off duty, you could’ve logged it into the sleeper for 7 hours, delaying your start time by about 30 minutes or so. Then you would’ve been fine to go off duty/PC to get home. No violation.
@@TheJoyofTrucking I’m preaching to myself in this following statement (and I’ve been doing this since 1996): Train yourself to log sleeper as a reflex instead of off duty, unless you’re home or you know your off duty time will be short, say 30 minutes max. Off duty does nothing for you except not burn your hours. Split sleeper requires 7 hours minimum in the sleeper and ONLY sleeper. The remaining 3 hours can be any combination of sleeper and off duty. It’s easy to burn through 2-3 hours off duty. But if you’re waiting for any longer, it only has to potential to help you if you were already in the sleeper.
You are so wrong. All you should have done is switch to off duty and logged off when the mechanic came to take your truck, since you can't be in the sleeper while they are working on it. That would have solved all of your problems. It's not illegal to be in the sleeper for 48 hours. It tripped into driving because he drove it over 5mph. It has nothing to do with you being in the sleeper. And I change my logs when I make a mistake all the time, no one has to allow it. The only thing you can't change is driving. Each company governs their logs differently. Basically, just log what you are actually doing and log off duty and log out of your eld when you aren't in the truck and there's a possibility of someone else driving your truck.
I drove for Werner in 2009 and they're the worst company out there they the ones that got my license revoked. The moral of the story DON'T WORK FOR WERNER ENTERPRISES! They don't care about their drivers

Thank you for detailed explanation!
Yes…sounds like your company has it set up for ease for the driver.
I miss just going and doing what i needed to and making it look right later.
I've never done a split shift.
I do t kmow how it works or what reason I would do it.
Yeah…try to avoid it. It’s trouble! 😉
Not related to todays video but how's the CB working out for you? I'm on home time and have been debating if I should get one before I go back out.
I always love the guy that turns the CB on once he gets in the traffic jam to ask what's going on, 🤣
Thank but no Thank I will stay with paper logs😊
I always log out when mine goes into the shop so when they drive it I can login check and reject the drive time they drove my truck because sometimes they test drive it around the parking lot if they're trying to get a fault message on the dash or something.
Any time your truck is down due to breakdown you go off duty because you have no knowledge of how much they drive it to see if it is fixed they may have your truck for multiple hours and if you are not on line 1 you will loose hours
Yup. Learned that lesson now.
That's a lie. I had that happened to me when I was in Ohio terminal and they modified on there end and erased it from my logs. I hate when they make u look bad when they can take 5 seconds on there end
🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
You should always go off duty and then log out any time Your truck is going in to the shop.
Yup! Hard lesson learned! Thanks for watching and commenting!
While very ridiculous i understand what happen right away.
👍
It's too bad you didn't know how to fix this before you went into an unchangeable violation. The 2.5 hours in the shop can begin a split, the time you were waiting can finish the split, as you explained IF you had just waited another hour and a half before moving out. Change that line to sleeper and wait til you get your hours back. Call dispatch and tell them the shop screwed up your clock and you can't leave yet, they need to reschedule the pickup time or give you a different load.
Of course, now that you're aware of how your day can be screwed up by someone else moving a truck, this won't happen again. Keep on Truckin.
Thank you! 😃👍
I think the trouble is that the mechanic driving started the 14 hour clock, so some of the time after this start counted on the 14.
Yup!!! Now Kevin is sure to log out! 😃
Kind of funny.....different subject but I must have 7 or 8 written warnings for refusing shag loads....will not drive a truck for less then minimum wage which most shags work out to be....
I didn’t know they give you written warnings for that?!?! That’s crazy!!!!
You are a warrior!!! They can stick their intimidations where ......well, you know.
What ELD app is that?
The common mistake is thinking that you are splitting your work clocks...(14&11).
You aren't. You are splitting your rest clock.
I know it sounds like the same result, but if you had this in mind, you wouldn't have made the same mistake that you made.
Another reason not to go OTR. ELD's make it a pain.
They can be challenging, especially these type of nuances. But, truthfully...we love OTR for the ability to see the country and visit with family and friends all over the country during home time.
Always log out of people net when truck goes into any kind of shop.
Yes. Hard lesson learned.
Thank you for explaining it in a different way. Not sure what is ‘not quite accurate’ in the video. Please explain. Thanks!
Next time you go to the shop, log out of your computer completely. Do not log back in until you are actually ready to work.
Yes! Hard lesson learned. Thx!!!
Anytime your truck has to go to a shop just log out completely
Yup. Learned that now. 🤪
When someone else gets in that truck and drives it mechanic or not they have to LEGALLY LOG its against the Law to DRIVE on Someone else's LOG. SO BAD rules that Mechanic didn't Log in. Notify FMCSA
😮😮😮
I need a college course to figure out what all those clocks mean.
I'll always buy a pre elog pre emissions truck! ALWAYS!
😃😃😃
Maybe I will see 👀 🤔 yal sometime and give yal a big hug 🫂 🤗
Ive been driving for a year now and I consider the ELD logs the largest lie in any industry. Other then when I'm driving or when I'm not driving, the government has no right to know any of this information. What difference does it make if I'm fueling? Or, where i take a break? Hell, given that nonbody performs pretrips when they wake up at a truck, that information is BS too.
I do a pretrip before I move the truck every time, even if I'm at a shipper loading/unloading, you never know if someone pulled your 5th wheel Pin. Anyone who isn't doing a Pretrip shouldn't be driving!
Maybe the mechanic drove it too fast but I still don't understand why you got the violation
Yes. It’s confusing. The mechanic driving it counted as ‘driving time’. With that in mind, Kevin didn’t do the ‘split’ correctly. He thought he could go on personal conveyance without having to finish out the split. But alas. That’s not the case. :-((
That makes sense now plus Kevin would have pulled over for a few more hours he would have been safe but he would also have gotten in trouble with you for being late for home time
@@johnblevins1349 😆😂🤣😆
We don't want Kevin in trouble he is a great guy
Sounds really complicated.
Yes. It is. We hope the video helps clear it up.
It is, but the more you experiment using it the easier it becomes to understand and use to your advantage
We agree. But they wouldn’t do it. 😣😣😣😔
@@TheJoyofTrucking they're morons... That's the problem with those big companies is they hired driver managers that have no idea how trucking works
Should of logged out of the logbook before the mechanic moved the truck on off duty!
Lol good ol elogs
😆😆😆
I take the edge home with me …
Yes! Definitely!!!
Very confusing!!! I’m sure you’re not the only one to get smacked by that
After the mechanic brought your truck out, instead of putting it off duty, you could’ve logged it into the sleeper for 7 hours, delaying your start time by about 30 minutes or so. Then you would’ve been fine to go off duty/PC to get home. No violation.
True. Thanks for that idea. But he kept hoping for a load soon. Didn’t realize it would take that long.
@@TheJoyofTrucking I’m preaching to myself in this following statement (and I’ve been doing this since 1996):
Train yourself to log sleeper as a reflex instead of off duty, unless you’re home or you know your off duty time will be short, say 30 minutes max.
@@jlewis4587 Love the way you THINK ♡☆♡
What a headache paper was better
🤪🤩😃😃😃
Under those circumstances, putting a warning in your file is PETTY to say the least! Personally, I would let them know that too.
Lmao you can’t access Your personal information on Your write because its inside of there personal files bruh,You can’t 😂😂😂😂
I see your mistake was letting somebody else drive your truck
Darn mechanics…😆😆😆
I have a better answer for this mess, DON'T DRIVE FOR BIG CARRIERS..........
