Wicked fun video. Have lived in Enfield since 2003 and I remember that car wash being functional and then randomly closed somewhere in the late 2000s
I've grown to appreciate the donut shops that aren't part of a chain over the years, the just make better donuts it seems.
Yes, I agree. The donuts made by Dunkin really aren't that good. Probably because they're mass-produced in some factory somewhere and trucked into the individual locations.
@@fleabittenadventuresThat's what Tim Hortons is like here in Canada, the donuts are made in a factory, frozen, then shipped to all the locations where they are thawed and sold, the onsite bakers where made redundant a while ago.
The former Whole Donut in Kensington is now called Swiches, but the inside is the same Whole Donut interior and booths, and the donuts are nearly the same as they used to be!
That's good to hear. I wonder if they're using the same machinery and recipes to make the donuts.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who enjoys eating a variety of pickles while manually washing my car.
You never know when you're going to need a pickle.
I live in Australia and I'm really enjoying your videos. It's interesting to learn another side of America's social history.
Thanks! Glad you like them!
Great video Tom! I know these vids probably do not get a massive amount of views, but it’s great to see places like this that many of us never knew existed. 🎉
Thanks! Glad you liked it! Some of these videos are doing "OK", so I'll keep doing them when I can. I'm not just aware of too many abandoned places I can legally enter. I'll have to see what else is around.
Great video! I literally live walking distance away from the first one, never took a look inside. It actually looks better in there than it did a few years ago. I recall seeing vines covering all the windows from the inside.
Glad you liked it! I wonder if someone tried to clean it up and took down the vines.
Great video, liked seeing the deserted location, then the location that was open when you last visited it. Nice atmosphere. Dunkin's doughnuts were very good back in the day, when they were baked in-store. Now it's just a great coffee shop and I don't buy any of the food items. Thanks!
Yes, I do remember Dunkin being better back in the 80's. Now their donuts taste stale to me, unless you get them first thing in the morning. Thanks for watching!
I lived East Hartford ct use to there a lot was local hangout for many
I stopped a couple of times at the Whole Donut on Rt 190...with a Dunkin Donut close by...yes ...they were very good.......
Yes, they will be missed!
Thank you for finding my long lost. Pickles. I took them out of my car to clean my mats the last time I was there. Thanks I’ll go by and grab my pickle. lol
No problem!
The abandoned car wash near the Gulf Gas station hazardville CT had only one automatic car wash bay so that's why you see a pay station near one of the bays.
Makes sense. Thanks for watching!
Yeah the counter was common. Green road in Manchester has one. May still be open as king donut. Indian guy that owned it retained the whole donut recipe fairly close to original but larger. There was an open whole donut in new Hartford on rt 4 until at least two years ago, coworker would stop in and grab me some nostalgia one in a while, blueberry cake was good too.
I remember some Dunkin’s way back had similar counters. Way back when these places did counter service.
The counter reminds me of a Mister Donut in Stamford I used to visit as a child.
I wonder if this was a common counter design at one point. Thanks for watching!
Wasn't their jingle something like "A Whole Lotta Baking Going On"? And what streets were those locations at? I graduated from high school in Enfield so I'm curious. Thanks man!
I honestly don't remember any Whole Donut jingles or commercials.... Glad you liked the video! Thanks!
I can confirm « A Whole Lotta Baking Going On » was the official slogan. I have an old mug with that slogan printed under the Whole Donut Logo
The Whole Donut in Canton recently shut down and is now Luke’s Donuts which is a place I used to visit a long time ago as a kid in Avon. CT. There was a post on Reddit about the Canton Whole Donut and a guy posted that he or his father knew the owner and he had the old sign hanging in his garage. He posted the pics on Reddit. I occasionally stopped in at that location in Canton to get a coffee and the coffee was better than DD as well. Will be missed.
I actually find abandoned homes and do my own “walkthroughs”, its a thrill of its own. Its crazy to see how things deteriorate so quickly over a few years
I would love to explore abandoned homes, but I'm too worried about getting into hot water. Thanks for watching!
@@fleabittenadventures Im afraid to get caught also but I make sure I go in at a good time and leave no trace and of course I dont take anything. Its a huge thrill haha
That's not a bad location and a lot of cars pass by there daily. I'm surprised it's been empty for so long.
This has a similar interior as the Manchester Ct Whole Donut. On Center St.
Another surviving Whole Donut location exists in Canton as Luke's now. You can check that out for the circular counter.
Yes, I saw that. I'll have to try that one someday.
There was one, I believe, near High Street in Holyoke MA. It closed a long while ago, shortly after I moved to RI. They were a pretty decent donut shop. I can't judge their coffee since I'm not a coffee drinker. But now I live in a state where you're never more than a few blocks from a Dunkin Donuts, and I can't remember the last time I even ate a donut. Oh well...
Yes, I think there was one in Holyoke and one in Springfield, MA. All we have around here in CT is Dunkin too, with a few exceptions. Thanks for watching!
@@fleabittenadventures Yeah, the Whole Donut was at the intersection of Sumner and Belmont Avenues in Springfield, known as "The X".
Just a tidbit of personal info since I saw you got a chocolate donut. My great grandfather came up with the recipe for the chocolate donut that Dunkin sells. He sold them the recipe right around the time they started business for $100.
Well, I thank your great grandfather for coming up with the recipe! It's one of my favorites.
A lot of donuts are better than the ones at Dunkin’ Donuts
True.
Whole donut cherry cake donut. Coffee light and sweat served in a porcelain mug on a saucer on the swivel stools. Winos smoking in the corner. Comfy. Best donuts ever
It was not a trademark counter it was off the shelf produced for many coffee and donut shops including many older Dunkin Donuts the original one in New Milford CT had the same style counter but the formica was different colors, this was in the 70s the company that sold it did so for like 50 years to many franchise owners.
I don't think the roof will last much longer at that abandoned location. It's sad seeing places like that go. We'll see a lot more of places closing with food prices going up.
No. It seems likes it's going to cave in pretty soon.
Any ghostly echoes of cops?🤔😀
I agree Whole Donut donuts were considerably better than Dunkin'
What! You’ll eat nasty mall candy but you won’t eat rancid pickles? Come on Tom! The fans want what they want! 😂😂😂
I draw the line at abandoned carwash pickles.
Where else would you leave pickles 😂
I think everywhere except an abandoned car wash is a good place to leave pickles. Thanks for watching!
My mother work at the Enfield st, one intill she got hurt. The owner did not paid her( Joyce) works comp, or her medical bills. My mother had to go on welfare, and had to quit school and get a job ,
Sorry to hear that.
How about mister donut? Still active in japan!
Now all we have is dunkins at every mile in every direction it seems.
Yes, same here. You can find a Dunkin pretty much everywhere. There are some independent donut shops, but nowhere near as many as Dunkin. Dunkin is kind of like the McDonald's of Donut shops.
Abandoned building. The neighbors don't care what it looks like; they're busy pushing up daisies. Just like the car wash. It all probably needs knocking down at this point.
It is kind of weird how there is this abandoned building rotting away in this otherwise apparently thriving area.
@@fleabittenadventureswell except for the cemetery next to the abandoned Whole Donut…not sure how thriving that place is lol (or hope it’s not)
So that's where I left my pickles....
