This is like taking a tour of the Pyramid just as it's completed. While the guide explains all of the features.... It would've been hella cool to follow from the beginning as you built this from the ground up. I'm hella curious what you do for a living, what your path has been with electronics, etc... Your wiring box actually looks pretty nice. Neat and tidy. We are our own worst critic. I love using the Noctua fans for cooling too, so quiet. This is the first video of yours I've watched so I didn't know what you were growing. From looking at all the care and how tricked out the system is that when you eventually showed the plants in the tent I was completely expecting a pot farm. lol. No one loves their plants like a pot farmer.
I think you need to give yourself some credit man, that box looks neat and organized inside. I have seen professionally installed industrial control boxes that aren't that organized. Sure you might not have printed boards, but everything is wire tied neatly and organize; for someone doing this as an amateur project in your home it is impressive. Nice work.

your garden has much to be desired in production, but the detail of automation you created is astonishing. I have been farming for 12 years, and am moving towards indoor and hydroponic growing. I purchased a $50 optiplex and now am on a mission to spend all winter trying to set this machine up to automate my mushroom grow room as well as that emergency water sensor to save my ass. Plus having the ability to mix hydroponic solution would take away all my clumsy habits that are in my current system caused by me and my lack of attention to detail from over working. LED Gardener So I just got my raspberry pie and relays from Amazon where do I start? LOL do you have any videos for initial set up? Mind you I have no tech skills at all
I'm setting up an automatic watering system for my tent right now,, and what I have set up for checking water level is one of those HC-SR04 sonic distance sensors mounted on the lid of the reservoir so I can tell how high the water level is. But this so so freaking cool, it's basically what my end goal is once I get the basics working.
I work in automation and have been considering something very similar. I even have the same exact tubs and shelves that you do! Seems like some things are needlessly over complicated, but I completely understand! I've been watching Dr. Bruce Bugbee lately, he has opened my eyes to nutrients and how we over complicate things as growers. I'm planning on having RO res, PH down, and Nutrient concentrate res. I use powdered nutrients so I would have to pump from the nutrient concentrate res and dose based on ec. This would mean only 3 pumps. You don't need to weigh the res, you could do a simple fluid level sensor for that. I love your safety precautions with the flood sensors, I hadn't thought of that. I will work that into my plan as well. Thanks for the video, looking forward to part 2!
@@LEDGardener I use Automation Direct as a source for sensors and PLC's. They have a variety of fluid level sensors, both submersible, and non contact. I believe the ultra sonic non contact sensor is the cheapest. www.automationdirect.com/adc/shopping/catalog/process_control_-a-_measurement/level_sensors_-a-_controllers/flowline_ultrasonic_level_sensors_(non-contact)/software_configured/dx10-00 It would be hard to say if it would be cost effective without knowing what you're using. An is engineering a system to get the best results he can, In his observation and experiment an always build on his own studies to get better results. I am SURE as rain he runs, What most would call "the scientific method" in his head every time he adds or adjust's aspects of his grow. I mean he ran the method to take himself out of the grow right?
I’m deeply impressed! FYI sunset and sunrise are not necessary for plants, they don’t suffer from direct light on/off switches. But if you want to implement it just for your amusement, go for it :D
Very cool. Interestingly I used a similar BOM for my cocktail machine, pumps, drivers, hardware are all very similar, even used mason jars for the reservoirs. You obviously have much more advanced problem and solution but cool to see how similar the setup ends up!
I watched this video at first thinking "I wish I could automate my "tomato" grow", Only to realize how much time/money/and learning curves it took him to get as far as he did (when all his plants look neglected and in poor shape). So I decided F it, I'll keep on keeping on with my daily check in's and tweaks. Impressive though, I must say.

When i said exact, i really do exact. The nutrients pumped for a water tank to doser, systens ejecting water cloud to the plants. Ph mesuring, and motors to close and opens Windows to the plants
you are living the dream! this is so cool. with this level of control and the amount of data you can collect your like half way to having some machine learning AI system just running the whole thing for you! this is cool.
I think the breadboards are awesome! I just finally made the decision to use them in my project boxes and it was a great decision that I don't regret. Glad to see it works so well on a larger scale!

Awesome work fella. Have you ever seen Pepper plants turned into Bonsais? There's a guy in Finland who grows his peppers then re-vegges the plant and puts it in a small pot to train it. Some look amazing. A way to reuse hydro plants.

One bell pepper, one or two tomatoes, one habanero, and one jalapeno. Anyway, I love your setup, but I think it served to help me realize that it isn't a small project. It's very cool, but I think I'll wait until I can do it right.

Couple of years I ago I bought this Jebao Auto Dosing Peristalsis Pump system from Aliexpress. It was like 70€. Never hooked it up because I managed to drop it into a bucket of water. I think it's been drying enough now that I might pull it out from storage. It has only 4 pumps but you could do something with that. They advertised it as remotely controllable so maybe it has a NodeMCU/esp8266 inside. Your setup looks nice!
Amazing setup. I see you use General Hydroponics. I have hydroponic advice if you want to listen. The pepper plant will like a NPK mixture of 3-1-4. Mixing 1 part Micro, 1 part Bloom to 1.25 part Grow, .5 part cal mag will give you a mixture that will give you healthy growth. The Tomato plant will get bloom rot or the tomatoes will not turn out if the calcium is too low. Surfer and potassium are essential for flower production and essential oils for taste. Epson salt is a grate way to boost flowers/taste for fruit production. 500-600 PPM is a nice place to be. Generally never over 800 PPM. I think if you try these few things, you will see plenty of great tasting fruit.
Thanks for the tip! The peppers ended up doing really well. I pulled over 300 ripe reaper pods in my first harvest. The tomatoes didn't do as well, and some had end rot as you mentioned.
Awesome Job, Loving the idea of using the fans under the nutrients to mag stir them prior to dosing! I have been stuck on that one until now - just need to make me some. Doing something similar myself but using fully hydroponic DWC system. I decided to do it via Javascript (Johnny-Five) and node for the back end (using FIrmata for the Ardunio side) with some Svelte for the front end - quite the learning curve but great fun and mostly working out for me. Loving your build, very neat with how you have integrated the peri-pumps and the tablet display. Also good idea to weigh the water and I had the same idea although I only purchased a single sensor so not so sure how that is going to work.
Hey, awesome! How far along in the build are you? The weigh scale kit I got came with 4 little sensors. It’s a cheap one at $15-$20 or so. I think each is rated for 50KG and my whole full res is somewhere around 150lbs. The magnetic stirrers are great. I superglued 2 stacks of 4 magnets per fan and cut a hole out of the shelf the jars sit on to get the magnets as close as physically possible to the bottom of the jar. The fans are controllable via PWM as well, I found that I had to ramp the speed up at first or the stirrer would spin out and it wouldn’t work.
@@LEDGardener Mostly finished with the hardware side apart from a standalone (RF) controller for the Fill / Drain pumps and off course a new 8 channel mag stirrer still to be made. I mostly just need to finish the software side but this is taking longer than it should (for a software developer). I do have a couple of questions if you don't mind? I also went with the White Labs Tentacle Shield with EC, PH & Temp stamps/sensors and notice you have placed the EC/PH sensors on opposite sides of the res, (as they are isolated) is this required? For mine I basically stagger the reads so that none of the sensors are reading at the same time - but not sure if it makes a difference or is required, it was just easy to code that way via Johnny-Five (callbacks). Are you controlling your mag stirring pumps individually via PWM or just slowly spinning them all up at once? How often do you mix the nutrients or do you do this just prior to dosing? How did you get around calibrating the Peri Pumps and how these are working out as they seem to have liquid in both sides of the pipes with air gaps. How does this effect the dosing accuracy? Looking forward to seeing any updates to your system.
Tech overkill... I love it! I have esp8266's everywhere for PWM lighting and interval timers. The weight sensor for water level is awesome. Only one word of advice. If you haven't installed overflow standpipes right to a drain for your flood protection...just remember anything that is electronic or has moving parts will eventualy fail.. I llearned the hard way from my aquarium days
Sweet. They are so damn handy. I have ESP32s doing PWM jobs since the 8266 is a software PWM apparently. I do have an overflow on each tote that feeds a drain right beside them :D

this is awesome , i have build before same setup . i was added CO2 sensor in order to further regulate the fan air flow . when there is high humidity outside . you can monitor the minimum air flow needed (co2 concentration) and that way you get another point to auto fan speed .and control . would be happy to hear your opinion . thank you
Hi You can use capacitive sensors outside the container to monitor preset levels. Sick sensors have relatively cheap sensors that will work well. All you need to do is calibrate empty level and filled level and set whether you need a Normally open or Normally closed status. I have used this type of setup for measuring level of corrosive where other methods such as ultrasonics proved unreliable. Well done on your project !

Very well done. I have a similar setup. I am using sonoffs to control my AC devices. I have my EC and PH sensors as well as sonar sensors all routed to ESP8266's and ESP32's . My EPS's are all using ESPHome and all my automation is done through NodeRed. Drop me a line I would love to pick your brain and compare notes. Not to many people doing this. Took me a while to compile everything I have.
this is exactly what ive been looking at doing for ages i have most of the stuff .. im looking at adding Lorawan (helium) to such a setup so i can monitor& trigger tasks from outside the house and also get sensor data from garden locations out of wifi range like in a field somewhere or an allotment or bottom of the garden . i beleive there are lorawan helium compatible esp32 s (915mhz for usa and 868mhz for uk europe ) now or just RFM95 LoRa module perhapes . Setting this up would mean alot of tasks could be made off grid for solar for summer grows

Nice build. I need your skills with ardruino or raspberry pi. N we could both build some pretty crazy stuff after. I setup a 100psi aeroponic/fogponic system that circulates. The use of weight sensors is overkill but nice.
Thought about making this in black market days about 8 years ago i thought of it with the video and controls via wifi to run multiple rooms at multiple addresses... obviously with a major plus for safety, ha. Smart... removes having to hire someone to feed when youre away😎💯♻️✌️
Great work! I’m surprised you have got your PAR Meter in there yet. Might be interesting to track the light level at the canopy level. You could see how things change as the plants fill out. Maybe a camera that would let you check the grow tent remotely from the tablet?
I considered integrating my meter but mine is older and outputs a very low voltage so I’d have to build a circuit that’s likely beyond my electronics capability to amplify it to the range an Arduino can work with. I have some Wyze cams that I would really like to integrate but they may not be ideal as I think you need to put them into an RTSP mode which isn’t really well supported.

An is engineering a system to get the best results he can, In his observation and experiment an always build on his own studies to get better results. I am SURE as rain he runs, What most would call "the scientific method" in his head every time he adds or adjust's aspects of his grow. I mean he ran the method to take himself out of the grow right?
Very nice done!! I just have one tip. Plants need water when light are on. They have a better natural cycle if the water is off at night.
I’m deeply impressed! FYI sunset and sunrise are not necessary for plants, they don’t suffer from direct light on/off switches. But if you want to implement it just for your amusement, go for it :D

Very cool. Interestingly I used a similar BOM for my cocktail machine, pumps, drivers, hardware are all very similar, even used mason jars for the reservoirs. You obviously have much more advanced problem and solution but cool to see how similar the setup ends up!

I watched this video at first thinking "I wish I could automate my "tomato" grow", Only to realize how much time/money/and learning curves it took him to get as far as he did (when all his plants look neglected and in poor shape). So I decided F it, I'll keep on keeping on with my daily check in's and tweaks. Impressive though, I must say.

When i said exact, i really do exact. The nutrients pumped for a water tank to doser, systens ejecting water cloud to the plants. Ph mesuring, and motors to close and opens Windows to the plants

Have you ever seen Pepper plants turned into Bonsais? There's a guy in Finland who grows his peppers then re-vegges the plant and puts it in a small pot to train it. Some look amazing. A way to reuse hydro plants.

Very cool. Thanks for the tour. I just decided I wanted to do a small indoor automated garden of some sort (not weed, honestly). I actually want to do nearly the exact plants you have. One bell pepper, one or two tomatoes, one habanero, and one jalapeno.
Anyway, I love your setup, but I think it served to help me realize that it isn't a small project. It's very cool, but I think I'll wait until I can do it right.

Couple of years I ago I bought this Jebao Auto Dosing Peristalsis Pump system from Aliexpress. It was like 70€. Never hooked it up because I managed to drop it into a bucket of water. I think it's been drying enough now that I might pull it out from storage. It has only 4 pumps but you could do something with that. They advertised it as remotely controllable so maybe it has a NodeMCU/esp8266 inside. Your setup looks nice!
Amazing setup. I see you use General Hydroponics. I have hydroponic advice if you want to listen.
The pepper plant will like a NPK mixture of 3-1-4. Mixing 1 part Micro, 1 part Bloom to 1.25 part Grow, .5 part cal mag will give you a mixture that will give you healthy growth. The Tomato plant will get bloom rot or the tomatoes will not turn out if the calcium is too low. Surfer and potassium are essential for flower production and essential oils for taste. Epson salt is a grate way to boost flowers/taste for fruit production. 500-600 PPM is a nice place to be. Generally never over 800 PPM. I think if you try these few things, you will see plenty of great tasting fruit.
Thanks for the tip! The peppers ended up doing really well. I pulled over 300 ripe reaper pods in my first harvest. The tomatoes didn't do as well, and some had end rot as you mentioned.
For your water level measuring. I used a tof sensor and measure the distance from the lid to the water level. Hope this helps

Awesome Job, Loving the idea of using the fans under the nutrients to mag stir them prior to dosing! I have been stuck on that one until now - just need to make me some.
Doing something similar myself but using fully hydroponic DWC system. I decided to do it via Javascript (Johnny-Five) and node for the back end (using FIrmata for the Ardunio side) with some Svelte for the front end - quite the learning curve but great fun and mostly working out for me.
Loving your build, very neat with how you have integrated the peri-pumps and the tablet display. Also good idea to weigh the water and I had the same idea although I only purchased a single sensor so not so sure how that is going to work.
Hey, awesome! How far along in the build are you?
The weigh scale kit I got came with 4 little sensors. It’s a cheap one at $15-$20 or so. I think each is rated for 50KG and my whole full res is somewhere around 150lbs.
The magnetic stirrers are great. I superglued 2 stacks of 4 magnets per fan and cut a hole out of the shelf the jars sit on to get the magnets as close as physically possible to the bottom of the jar. The fans are controllable via PWM as well, I found that I had to ramp the speed up at first or the stirrer would spin out and it wouldn’t work.
@@LEDGardener Mostly finished with the hardware side apart from a standalone (RF) controller for the Fill / Drain pumps and off course a new 8 channel mag stirrer still to be made. I mostly just need to finish the software side but this is taking longer than it should (for a software developer). I do have a couple of questions if you don't mind?
I also went with the White Labs Tentacle Shield with EC, PH & Temp stamps/sensors and notice you have placed the EC/PH sensors on opposite sides of the res, (as they are isolated) is this required? For mine I basically stagger the reads so that none of the sensors are reading at the same time - but not sure if it makes a difference or is required, it was just easy to code that way via Johnny-Five (callbacks).
Are you controlling your mag stirring pumps individually via PWM or just slowly spinning them all up at once? How often do you mix the nutrients or do you do this just prior to dosing?
How did you get around calibrating the Peri Pumps and how these are working out as they seem to have liquid in both sides of the pipes with air gaps. How does this effect the dosing accuracy?

Tech overkill... I love it! I have esp8266's everywhere for PWM lighting and interval timers. The weight sensor for water level is awesome.
Only one word of advice. If you haven't installed overflow standpipes right to a drain for your flood protection...just remember anything that is electronic or has moving parts will eventualy fail.. I llearned the hard way from my aquarium days
Sweet. They are so damn handy. I have ESP32s doing PWM jobs since the 8266 is a software PWM apparently. I do have an overflow on each tote that feeds a drain right beside them :D

this is awesome , i have build before same setup . i was added CO2 sensor in order to further regulate the fan air flow .
when there is high humidity outside . you can monitor the minimum air flow needed (co2 concentration) and that way you get another point to auto fan speed .and control .

You can use capacitive sensors outside the container to monitor preset levels.
Sick sensors have relatively cheap sensors that will work well.
All you need to do is calibrate empty level and filled level and set whether you need a Normally open or Normally closed status.
I have used this type of setup for measuring level of corrosive where other methods such as ultrasonics proved unreliable.

Very well done. I have a similar setup. I am using sonoffs to control my AC devices. I have my EC and PH sensors as well as sonar sensors all routed to ESP8266's and ESP32's . My EPS's are all using ESPHome and all my automation is done through NodeRed. Drop me a line I would love to pick your brain and compare notes. Not to many people doing this. Took me a while to compile everything I have.

this is exactly what ive been looking at doing for ages i have most of the stuff .. im looking at adding Lorawan (helium) to such a setup so i can monitor& trigger tasks from outside the house and also get sensor data from garden locations out of wifi range like in a field somewhere or an allotment or bottom of the garden . i beleive there are lorawan helium compatible esp32 s (915mhz for usa and 868mhz for uk europe ) now or just RFM95 LoRa module perhapes . Setting this up would mean alot of tasks could be made off grid for solar for summer grows

Great work! I’m surprised you have got your PAR Meter in there yet. Might be interesting to track the light level at the canopy level. You could see how things change as the plants fill out. Maybe a camera that would let you check the grow tent remotely from the tablet?
I considered integrating my meter but mine is older and outputs a very low voltage so I’d have to build a circuit that’s likely beyond my electronics capability to amplify it to the range an Arduino can work with.
I have some Wyze cams that I would really like to integrate but they may not be ideal as I think you need to put them into an RTSP mode which isn’t really well supported.
