Amazing! I did a hydroponics project with a friend of mine in seventh grade for a science fair, that was back in the early 60s. People did look for healthy alternatives to growing food and living communities in the mid-sixties, and that was very much a part of the hippie movement, in the late 60s, early 70s.
I can’t help but wonder if this would have taken off more for home gardeners back then if work hours hadn’t become so long in this country. Most employers think they own the people that work for them now, and people have nothing left after finishing their crazy hours, so they watch a little Netflix to turn off their brain and fall asleep. (If anything, the pandemic has made it worse because it’s easier for supervisors to dump more work without looking you in the eye.)
We are working toward this on our farm, but we are in a much colder climate. We are also restoring the endangered oak savanna habitat on our land and that takes time as well - but if everyone does something, the world will be a better place 😊

I'm not saying this is your answer, but I thought the vid was interesting: "Combustion-Free Hot Water at the Whole Systems Research Farm" (It's from 2013, so I'm sure they've done more since filming this.)
In the description you call it aquaponics, but it's a hydroponics set up. Aquaponics = living fish in the system and their waste water is used to water the plants. Hydroponics = adding the minerals and trace elements to the water, not using living organisms for it.
He had a mix of soil and soilless, so fundamentally as per Sahaj's comment, its an automated watering system that gets feed dosed, and some of the plants are hydroponic. The RO he talks about doesn't even produce the nutrients, its a water filter, I would assume its cleaning either ground / well water or lake / river. Maybe he's concerned about the town water chlorine, seeing as there is almost zero vermiculture, lacto basilicas or mycorrhizal / saprophytic funghi to break it down.

We tried this early this year, we just hung a bag from a gate and put a tomato plant in it, worked really well, so we will do it again next year, just one as that yields enough for the two of us.
12:30 , no wind turbines are made on the basis of alternator, they are basically some form of BLDC or PMSM which internally operates just like a 3 phase AC induction motor. PMSM motors are about as efficient as you can get.
Stop being so pedantic. Everyone who understands what he built knows that alternator is the wrong terminology, but for the inexperienced or lay person this video was directed to, alternator as an understandable word from your car as being able to generate electricity from the rotational momentum and so was the correct word to use. Who when starting diy-ing wind turbines didn't make theirs a hacked together HAWT with a car alternator. Worked fine until we all understood why it wasn't great.

@@shelleynobleart Except that they were invented by Savonius in the 1920s, and are not as efficient as the classic horizontal axis design. That is why they are not used, except for cases where output/efficiency does not matter. I thought they looked cool too, but then I started digging around. . .
yea, really. hundreds of watts from each of those, maybe in the peak of a hurricane. they're not high production turbines. the classic style is used much more often because it works. even if the turbine has to turn to face into the wind, that's not hurting production so much as it is auto tuning the production and getting the most out of it. these vertical ones on the other hand, they're good because wind can come in from any direction, but when they're lined up like he has them... well, you've ruined the only benefit that style of turbine has.
This man is a genius. I don't know if I'd be able to manage all of the hydroponics system with the pumps and tanks and plumbing involved, but I love how efficient his system is for growing tons of food!
Amazing content! What an incredible system. Great for producing commercial quantities, or long term production on a homestead. Long term, cause the high cost of the system makes the food too expensive in small quantities unless amortised over a long time. Which is why Larry emphasises how durable it it is. But as the cost of natural resources increases, the system becomes more feasible. And people can grow what they need locally on very small/urban plots. I presume (hope) those plastics are made from recycled materials. The turbines look very interesting!
I hope that the rest of the world can adopt this man's beautiful and efficient creations to make the world a completely better place. What he has created can single-handedly change the entire world for the better.
He didn't invent those. And as others have pointed out, most drain and fill horticulture setups recycle the liquid. And he is trying to make a buck, hence the patent on his pots. Aquaponics is actually better, since you get fish, and they make the plant food.

This is so needed in our community with only 2% of the populace growing their food we all know what's gonna happen Thank you for sharing this ; I will share with everyone I come in contact with
Thank you for all your hard work Kirsten! There is so much to learn and I am learning so much through your channel. Human potential is extraordinary and when we work with nature, we can truly create sustainable living spaces that promote the well-being of all.
im AMAZED! The alternators and the turbines... the antennas.. of course the pots/towers along with the whole hydroponic system. I really wanna be his friend/neighbor or something.
Thanks for sharing!
That was impressive. His wind setup just blew my mind. Very good video, thank you.
WOW I've been seeing her videos for the past couple of years, and this is one if not the best one! The Scientist should be reverse engineering UFO's this dude is truly special.
@@aliannarodriguez1581 its up to the people to refuse to work more. There has to be a balance.
We are working toward this on our farm, but we are in a much colder climate. We are also restoring the endangered oak savanna habitat on our land and that takes time as well - but if everyone does something, the world will be a better place 😊
Yes I am also in an seasonal area so I'm thinking about using this with a high tunnel of some sort.
@@marinigrey4913 My buddy grows year-round here in Wisconsin using solar panels to heat his greenhouse. I'm going to have to get with him and see how he did it. This is a great system and I'd like to use it 😊
Watch her video “oranges in the snow “ to see a wonderful greenhouse ❣️
@@virginiaallisonpeck2517 Thank you Virginia, I'll do that! 😊
I'm not saying this is your answer, but I thought the vid was interesting: "Combustion-Free Hot Water at the Whole Systems Research Farm" (It's from 2013, so I'm sure they've done more since filming this.)
The man is amazing with a loving heart..GOD bless you Sir!!!
This guy is brilliant! Seriously he’s on another level. I’m definitely buying his system for myself. Thanks for sharing.
This old gentleman is a legend. Dedication to his cause is admirable 💯
From 1990, I seem to see how vertical farming ideas come from.
In the description you call it aquaponics, but it's a hydroponics set up.
Aquaponics = living fish in the system and their waste water is used to water the plants.
Hydroponics = adding the minerals and trace elements to the water, not using living organisms for it.
@@sirwizalot7164 How would you use beneficial bacteria in a hydroponic/aquaponic system?
I thought he had soil.
Hydroponic and aquaponic systems do not use soil.
Yeah it’s not even hydroponics it’s just a super efficient watering system.
This has to be your best and most informative segment yet
I have to say that this interview is by far the most interesting! I have to say he's an Einstein to boot! 💯
What an amazing man. You can tell that he’s so excited and happy engineering this stuff. Optimizing and making things more efficient. God bless you sir 🙌
@Kirsten Dirksen
: I have been watching your channel for quite some time now. Boy, how I have truly enjoyed watching your children grow! You are exposing them in such a marvelous way, how to see the fruits of the Earth & the wonderful people everywhere that are Loving, Giving, Sharing, Hard Working everyday Joys of THE LIGHT! WOW! And, It warms my heart to see them so interested and well behaved while honoring their Mothers work! In turn, your children will be celebrated by what they have given to in Life! ~ YOU are truly Blessed! 🙏
Diane G , I've watched her for years also, have watched her children grow, have always thought what a great way to go up, all the places they have been , and all they have seen, I've always been amazed at how well they get along together, traveling together, GREAT PARENT'S ,MAKE GREAT KID'S !
Love this guy's heart ❤ good soul. World needs more men like you!
I will definitely be getting this system. I have been searching for something like this. I wish I had found this sooner. Thank you Kirsten for bringing us great stuff like this.
We need more people like this
He has definitely found a new customer 👍
This is amazing. Can’t wait to support them by buying their system
I appreciate this kinda man showing so much detail that it could be copied by viewers. love the food growing community always willing to share
Ez-grow pot's are amazing!! Work perfectly 👌
I remember Jacques Cousteau made a wind powered mast on a sailing boat using that same design in the 60's/70's.
Thanks for continuing to do these introspective archiving of the various and unique ways people are choosing to live their lives in a way that is self sufficient and beneficial to the progression of where important technology like food production and housing on an individual and family scale are going. Always super fascinating and well done.
not in business to get rich, but in business to grow food and help people.........now that is a man i respect.......i have the exact same idea...God will bless you for that...
Check out his website 💸
I am very glad people are starting to use vertical wind turbines again, they were great for a reason
This man deserves a kiss from every human on the planet. Just wow!!😮
We tried this early this year, we just hung a bag from a gate and put a tomato plant in it, worked really well, so we will do it again next year, just one as that yields enough for the two of us.
That Bloke's windmills are EXCELLENT.
Birds and Bats will not fly into them and DIE, unlike traditional big blade windmills.
See a man like this is one i think we can all agree is an honest man. He can sell you for his own gain because he has the product, but he would much rather just makes sure it really does benefit others rather than to be selfish like other business owners
Wow. The turbines and alternator are mind blowing.
The turbines look like the double helix DNA.
Love the design of the turbines. Looks exactly like the future to me. I think Kirsten just gave us a preview 50 years ahead.
@@shelleynobleart Except that they were invented by Savonius in the 1920s, and are not as efficient as the classic horizontal axis design. That is why they are not used, except for cases where output/efficiency does not matter. I thought they looked cool too, but then I started digging around. . .
very inefficient design 20% efficient Savonius Rotor
you get 40% with with smaller blades like airplane wing Darrieus Design
yea, really. hundreds of watts from each of those, maybe in the peak of a hurricane. they're not high production turbines. the classic style is used much more often because it works. even if the turbine has to turn to face into the wind, that's not hurting production so much as it is auto tuning the production and getting the most out of it. these vertical ones on the other hand, they're good because wind can come in from any direction, but when they're lined up like he has them... well, you've ruined the only benefit that style of turbine has.
I love watching your videos! It’s really inspiring and gives me hope for the future. I love seeing ‘regular’ folks learning how to save our planet.
The real innovation is the alternators. I want some of those!!!!
Fascinating! Fellow gardener here. I’ll be looking into his systems. Thanks, Kirsten!
I’m running out of words since his amazing work is out of world! 🙏👍❤️👏from Virginia 🇺🇸
This gentleman is no joke. He's the type of individual that government despises. Absolute legend.
This is what we call a good video
I hope that the rest of the world can adopt this man's beautiful and efficient creations to make the world a completely better place. What he has created can single-handedly change the entire world for the better.
I don't like the titel "mad scientist". He is a genius. His wind turbines power from all directions blew my mind. Thank you very much!
He didn't invent those. And as others have pointed out, most drain and fill horticulture setups recycle the liquid.
And he is trying to make a buck, hence the patent on his pots.
Aquaponics is actually better, since you get fish, and they make the plant food.
@@GregMoress yeah aquaponics is great but I'm certain it wont out yield his method.
One of the best channels on UA-cam! Thank you!
Hi Sparkyin
How are you today?🌹🌺
You’d think it’s a local mom and pop backyard operation. Little did I know this is a global thing run from this backyard.
Wow
He's definitely taking us into the future of farming, in a very green clean way
Thank you for sharing 👍
To the child at the end who says, “it looks like a 🎃 pumpkin,” thank you 🙏 because I was wondering WHY it is called a cinderella tomato 🍅
Very cute :)
My gran always said, "There is no such thing as a stupid question."
From the mouths of babes.
LOL right!! I was wondering that too, i appreciate the child's innocent curiosity
Kirsten plz never stop doing what youre doing, your channel has been the driving force behind all hope and inspiration behind my dream of having a tiny homestead, ive been watching for years and dreaming of making my own small home along with a self sustaining garden/farm and if not for you and your channel i might have given up on that dream long ago, it might be a few years from now but i look forward to the day that you and your team can see what i create, so dont go quitting your job until i can actually build the house ok haha
Wow! I def need a single tower....sign me up please!! Thanks Kirsten for always doing a great job bringing us cool, wonderful and innovative ways to change!!👏🏻🤩💖
The nutrient and fertigation of the system is basic hydro or aqua-ponics. But yes, that pot design is beautiful.
I absolutely want some after seeing this. Thank you for the awareness.
I love his energy, passion and innovation.
His Tiny Farm idea, if added to a fish aquaculture component could go a long way in small communities to allay any food “insecurity”.
I would put one of the power systems on my cabin, but I have not gotten response when trying to contact him, however. Hoping it is just because they are super busy.
Thank you for creating this video so everyone knows that there’s a system out there for a small group of families could chip in and help feed them and maybe others less fortunate and God Bless this gentleman and producer and Humanity if you seek you will find
❤ what the veggie section at the store SHOULD LOOK LIKE! Fresh, no preservatives.
That was awesome to watch. Thank you Kirsten. GREAT VIDEO
Renaissance man - brilliant! thanks for sharing!
He is also practicing renaissance dentistry
This is awesome! Props to this veteran for taking his gift and giving us wonderful options!
Hi Linda
How are you today?🌹🌺
You have obviously streamlined your system and I like the watering/feeding layout. I would like to install that on my property.
I would love to hang out and learn from this guy! He's fascinating. What a brain!
I wonder how this place is doing today? I hope they're OK. It would be nice to see an update video.
It's always fun to find videos with my nickname on them. Mad scientist. Very nice setup good looking garden
Good for those who can afford it. A single patio version starts at $499. If someone can afford that, awesome to grow your own food. Maybe it will help get more people into gardening.
You spend that on groceries for 1person for 6 months you can make your money back quickly if you think ahead... or try to save up... food is never easy 💔💖❤️hang in there you’ll get it if you try...
@@virginiaallisonpeck2517 I spend maybe $100 on groceries. I have a garden actually..Permaculture in the ghetto I call it. Turned my small yard into food production. Organics is too expensive to buy.
@@lunardiinferi6114 I was just trying to be encouraging... I wish you the best...
@@virginiaallisonpeck2517 I wasn't offended. no worries
if you look a little closer you can get 50 pots for $499... that is 25 towers that you build yourself
Fascinating. Love people who think creatively and then make it happen.
That is jaw droppingly amazing! I wish that I could afford to buy a system like that. I really love the concept of stackable planting.
The first 15 seconds of the video, and all I can already imagine vividly is the smell of those tomato leaves as he brushes by, I used to love that smell in the cool morning when I sat on a plastic chair and hunted for new hornworms and their eggs. Feeling envy.
love this guy.
I wish I would have found this channel 10 years ago, so much guidance with proof of concept. You've got yourself a new subscriber.
If nothing else, this was a good infomercial! This video blew up his website and currently can't access it. He needs a bigger off-grid internet box! This system would be perfect for the lettuce technique called "Cut-and-Come-Again".
Just found this, not a gardener, but this is freaking amazing. Tks for posting this guy. I love this guy.
Seeing that he has a market for rooftop farmers in Lagos Nigeria has me stocked!!
I subscribed and liked because you are growing a vertical farm stead. Beautiful farm.
Hi! Love the inginuity... Would be very interested in seeing how you're holding up with the current storm in Texas, hope all is well
i saw this guy years ago and wrote to him, never replied. His windwill dna shape i remember him saying he could get 400 watts off each. Thanks for putting this up, now i have foundhim again.
This all looks wonderful and amazing only for newbies. With this amount of foliage and density of plants I wonder if he collects any significant crop.
It's not that hard to use your hands and move some branches to pick up fruits.
As you can see, the area is not big at all and anyone can pick all the fruits alone in probably an hour.
You are a fabulous person you are not trying to get rich you are trying to help people grow food I think that's great wonderful video pass it around to our friends
Kirsten! Thanks so much for bringing awareness of all the different sustainable homes & gardens that you have found... always looking forward to your videos! Great job lady.
