There is a video from the British National Television Awards where David Tennant gets a lifetime achievement award. He reacts to his tribute video which is emotional.
It's amazing to me how little impact Kylie Minogue had on the US. American reactors just don't know who she is but she was a big deal in terms of casting in the UK
Yeah, she had one really popular song back when I was in like middle or high school but that was pretty much it. I knew the name instantly when people on Patreon mentioned that it was her, but I obviously didn't recognize her face.
She did have another minor hit in the US, Cant Get You Out Of My Head, and some might remember her from the movie Moulin Rouge or Streetfighter... maybe Bio-Dome?
This is the most watched episode of New Who ever - almost 14 million. Namely because Astrid was played by Kylie Minogue who is a massive, massive pop star everywhere but the US side the late 80s.
Oh, wow! I didn't know it was the most popular. I would've thought maybe the 50th Anniversary special or something (unless that doesn't count since it's technically a special).
@@BritanyBinges It counts, but there are a couple of reasons why this did so well. At the time (2007), Christmas specials aired on Christmas Day used to be the most watched shows of the year in the UK - that's no longer the case now but, for context, both the Christmas Special before this and the one after did really well too with around 12 million viewers. And secondly, the fact that Kylie was in this special was just EVERYWHERE. This would be like Taylor Swift appearing in a special of Star Trek. Kylie has massive mainstream appeal and families tuned in to see her on top of the traditional Doctor Who audience. Was just the perfect storm, really. 🙂
This stands as probably my 2nd favourite holiday special. It's cheesy, it has high stakes, it has a weirdly high body count for a Christmas special, and it packs a few really big emotional punches. The Christmas specials were always seen as an amazing opportunity to get new viewers, because it aired in the primetime 7pm slot on Christmas Day, on BBC One, when most people would be sat around the TV with family. It's the best timeslot there is, so they always try their best for these episodes and this one really nails that by dialling back the sci-fi lore bullshit and focusing on engaging characters and fun dialogue.
That's so wild to me that Christmas night is such a prime-time spot for a show. I have a pretty large/extended family and we all actually get along fairly well so we're usually deep in conversations or playing board games. If the TV is on, it's on the channel that plays A Christmas Story on repeat all Christmas day. lol
@@BritanyBinges Christmas specials are a pretty big deal here, or at least were before streaming. Every Christmas day BBC One would have Strictly Come Dancing (basically Dancing with the Stars but UK) then Doctor Who. So there's a good chance your family'd be sat down for all of it; your grandmother and mother wanted to watch the Strictly episode, then Doctor Who came on after etc. I checked this, Voyage of the Damned on Christmas Day was watched live by 13.31 million viewers, the second most-watched show for the entire year - beat only by the Eastenders (long-running soap opera) episode that came right after. The UK back then was about 61m people, so that's almost a quarter of the country. It was THE slot to have and Doctor Who held it for nearly a decade.
I really love that The Doctor just makes a sidenote that he was there at the first XMas and got the last room. So he was the reason Jesus was born in the stables 😂
This is my favorite Doctor Who Christmas Special overall! Great characters, the stakes are extremely high, and David’s BADASS “I’m The Doctor” speech!!

As a Australian, it was surreal to see Kylie Minogue in Doctor Who after absent in acting for a while from what i remember on the news on her at the time, even though she wasn't the first Australian actor/actress to appear in Doctor Who. Also rip Verity Lambert at the end credits, she's pretty important in the series since the beginning.
@@BritanyBinges Also she's Australian, not British. But yeah Kylie Minogue is a actress & singer along with her sister Danni. Neighbours is one of her most known roles, appearing recently as a cameo in the "final" EP before it's announcement in Amazon Freevee that Neighbours was coming back.
You are one of the very few that included the "-You should see me in the morning... -OK!". One of my favourite parts of the episode, specially with that face Astrid put after she said that...
Well done for not trusting the robotic angles many stars in this one Kyile minogue The guy who played Richard Bucket And Geoffrey Palmer he also was in classic Who as different character
Im sure someine has said this already since you're so far ahead. And this was so long ago. But I think after losing Astrid. He decided that hes just going to travel alone now. I dont think it was meant to be a slight towards the old guy. I think with rose, then martha leaving. Then right after him agreeing to have astrid there. She dies He was just feeling.. done with trying to have a companion
Christmas specials always have a bit of a different tone than more standard episodes. Not a spectacular episode but some very good scenes that make up for it. The "I am the Doctor" speech is great and the characters are ones you care about (well, except one).
So glad you have watched time crash, even if you don’t know the classic doctor featured in it, it’s still fun! ‘If you could choose who lived and who died, that would make you a monster’ nice foreshadowing for the waters of mars perhaps 😋 Also the doctor has apparently been on the proper titanic before, a brief line in series 1 the doctor says he was there and ended up clinging onto an ice berg
Yeah, I talked at the end about how it was the 9th Doctor who'd been on the real Titanic so it wouldn't have made sense for this episode to be on it as well.
Astrid is played by Kylie Monogue who is an Australian Popstar. She was popular in the UK around this time and in the 90's and this was very much seen as a cameo role. Most people who knew her knew she wouldn't be sticking around. But this episode has the "I'm the Doctor" scene which is very iconic, memorable characters and it is sad and happy at the end. Also since you are on season 10 it is no spoiler to say that Wilf makes his first appearance here but at the time he wasn't planned to be Donna's Grandad and they had someone else in the role initially but from the deleted scenes he doesn't seem to be that great of an actor. Bernard Cribbins who played Wilf was in an old non canon Doctor Who movie in the 60's but I won't go into that incase you are planning on watching it one day.
The real reason he crashed into the Titanic was a minisode called Time Crash, and it featured Tennant fanboying over his favorite childhood Doctor (now father-in-law), Peter Davison.
I love this one so muchhhhh, watching your react to it reminded me how much. Me and my friend used to spen our drama lessons trying to say banakafalata
