6:21 - NEWSPAPER VENDOR - BERNARD CRIBBINS [RIP age 93] - The newspaper seller was portrayed by veteran British actor & singer Bernard Cribbins. He was a companion to Dr. Who in the film 'Daleks' Invasion Earth 2150 A.D.' (1966). In this movie, Peter Cushing portrayed the Doctor and would go on to portray 'Grand Moff Tarkin' in 'Star War' (1977). It always intrigues me who recognise Kylie Minogue & who don't in this episode!
RTD asked Kylie to be in DW not thinking she would say yes but she did!!
Kylie (55 now), originally a soap opera actress has since the 1980s been a pop star reinventing herself over decades with many successes globally even in 2023 reaching a high with a song called "Padam Padam" all around the world which caught many on Tik Tok for example.

Fun fact: The last surviving passenger onboard the RMS Titanic, Millvina Dean, lived to see this episode. After she saw the ending scene from The Last of the Time Lords, where the bow of the ship crashes into the TARDIS, she got upset because she thought the show was going to be using the real Titanic and found it disrespectful to her father and to everyone else who had died that day. A Doctor Who spokesperson contacted her to assure her that the show would, in fact, not be depicting the real ship.

The old man in the kiosk that the Doctor and Astrid meet on Earth is the late, great Bernard Cribbins, a British actor of stage, screen and television who also had a short stint as a pop star of funny songs which hit the British pop charts back in the 1950s and 1960s.
He has a list of credits longer than your arm, going all the way back to the mid 1950s. One of his many claims to fame is that he starred as the main heroic lead in the 2nd Doctor Who film, “Daleks Invasion Earth 2150 AD,” (1966) alongside Hammer horror actor Peter Cushing who played an eccentric scientist called Doctor Who (sic). This 2nd Dalek film was based on the 2nd Dalek TV story, “The Dalek Invasion of Earth,” which starred the original 1st TV Doctor, William Hartnell.
This 2nd film came about because of the huge success at the UK box office of the first Dalek film, “Doctor Who and the Daleks,” in 1965, which was based on the 1st Dalek TV story, “The Daleks.” Unfortunately, the 2nd film wasn’t as successful as the 1st, and plans for a third Dalek film were shelved. Both films were shot in colour and I’m sure lots of your Doctor Who subscribers would love you to react to these two films.
I wonder if the old man at the kiosk will ever be seen again? 🤔

The show was cancelled for decades in the 80s and the administrator of the BBC at the time is the only BBC administrator to be snubbed for a knighthood. This being coincidental is unlikely.

This episode is based on an idea for a Doctor Who episode written by the brilliant Douglas Adams (RIP), author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (which shares a few canon tie-ins with the whoniverse if you know where to look!), and who also used to write for Doctor Who during the Fourth Doctor's era!

    • @mattymcmatty
      @mattymcmatty 27 днів тому +2

It wasn't a Doctor Who idea: there was a video game called Starship Titanic which Adams wrote in the mid-late 90s. It's mainly it's own thing, far removed from any late 70s Doctor Who pitches. Starship Titanic gets a one-line mention in the 3rd Hitchhiker's book, which was based on a rejected Doctor Who script (The Krikkitmen) but that script has no connection the Titanic.
Russell T Davies was unaware of the game and the working title for this was Starship Titanic as well. When Davies found out about it, he changed the name. This was 5 months into the development process, a few weeks after writing the first draft of the script.
The clear inspiration for Voyage of the Damned is The Poseidon Adventure, and from what I can tell the plot of the video game (and the novel based on it, written by Terry Jones) doesn't resemble it much. It's just a coincidence that they both have the Titanic as a spaceship (it's pretty obvious place to go if you're doing a version of The Poseidon Adventure in space).
Adams is still brilliant, though, both in and out of the Whoniverse.

The Deathstalker family of the eponymous space opera series are distant descendants of the Droods, with the family founder showing up to help his ancestors out at one point. It is actually cool to see that someone else has experience with them, because when I do go looking them up again I often get redirected to books from a series with a similar name that has no relation and find it nearly impossible to make my way to the right one.

This is a fun episode, although the disaster movie diminishing party is kind of grim. Astrid was a great companion, but she was never going to stick around. Kylie (who was coming back after cancer treatment) had an album to launch and a tour to do. She was a huge star at the time, and is still going. She won a Grammy this year.

You could say a little more than that though. It's a highly prestigious honour 🎖 & bestowed upon by a member of the Royal family usually at Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle.
In British honours there is the C.B.E, O.B.E, M.B.E & Knighthood/ Damehood (getting Sir or Dame before their name like Sir Ian McKellen & Dame Judi Dench)

They have indeed changed & revamped the Doctor Who theme but this is the last time you will hear it in this form with the piano notes at the end sadly.
It is significantly rockier & one of my favourite theme variations up to now. For some reason (prob time) it was shorter after this ep 😭 going forward

This one’s plot is remarkably similar to a story idea by Douglas Adams called Starship Titanic, which was turned into a novel by Terry Jones and a video game with Douglas Adams being there to guide both. I have a memory of the foreword that says although Douglas came up with the idea, and general plot, he had Terry Jones write it… and Terry agreed to do so, so long as he could write it in the nude.

I always found Rickston's "Who the hell are you anyway?" to be Doctor Who's version of Owen saying to Jack "Who the fuck are you anyway?" in "End of Days". Don't get me wrong, I don't think it was intentional at all, but I think it's a pretty cool thing nonetheless

This episode is so silly; there are so many details where if you think about them for more than 5 minutes, make less than 0 sense. But oh boy, is it fun.
There's a small but dedicated portion of the fanbase that really wanted Mr. Copper to be a companion. Back in old Who, companions came in all shapes and sizes. New Who will get there eventually, but sadly in these early days (early days of the modern era? That sounds silly aha) they stick pretty close to the basic formula, which is 'Doctor + one pretty girl'.
