Hey Brother what's up!!.. if you could only Hear jazz is dead. Jimmy Herring is a freaking Beast of an animal. He has got a smooth Superfast laid-back side to him almost like Jerry's. If Trey thinks he has a smooth laid-back style he is decidedly wrong compared to Jimmy. Cuz we both know that he can row Jimmy Row.......... and way back in the 90s there wasn't many people playing Grateful Dead songs on stage then Phish..... I don't care some people can be racist and call it Jewie but I love it all.... none of that irrelevant stuff up there matters to a guy like me who grew up with the most oddest childhood you could possibly think of. Music has been tapping my head like a person with a lollipop trying to get my attention from my entire life.

Herring’s best friend at music school was Jeff Buckley. Jeff was 17, Jimmy in early 20s. He says of Buckley in an interview: I’ll tell you something about him: That cat had the best ear of anybody I have ever been around. This was before the days of being able to digitally slow down Coltrane solos. This cat transcribed all these Coltrane solos, all this stuff from Steve Vai’s Flex-able album, Dregs stuff, Alan Holdsworth solos-you name it. It was inspirational. I was trying to do the same thing, but he was the first guy I met who was as into it as I was-but he was much further along.

I toured with Jimmy in Aquarium Rescue Unit
1995-1996 . Jeff Sipe was the original drummer in that band. Jimmy knows his instrument so well.. He wrote the syllabus for the guitar course at Atlanta Institute of Music.i was very impressed with your ear. A great lesson as I’m an accomplished guitarist as drums are my main instrument .i think its fascinating that someone like yourself can break down harmony as quick and pretty accurate..👍

Will never forget seeing Jimmy when he was with ARU. Never saw him before at the time (maybe circa 1996) live at the covered dish in Gainesville, Fl. This was a a very intimate place and I was literally right in front of him the whole time. I just knew he was on his way to special things along with the rest of the band. That was an amazing performance that night alongside Oteil and the rest of the band. He had a lit cigarette hanging from his mouth the whole show without taking a drag with his fingers which was quite impressive! Great content here as usual.

Don't quit pausing!! That is when we learn. You have a great ear and catch things not all of us can, when you stop and figure things out, even if not note for note, it helps us learn! It is very helpful to hear you explain what your hearing, the approach you think the guitarist is taking, etc. Also, the more you stop and start it, the more you are probably interested in it, so I say have at it!!

A little note about the drummer, Jeff Sipe. I had the honor of meeting him once. This well connected friend of mine had a party and invited a bunch of bands to play. My band played before the Jeff Sipe Trio. We weren't very good at the time. Just a garage band really. But Jeff gave us lots of really nice compliments. He has a huge heart. A very humble and kind person. Then his band took the stage and Tore It Up!!! They proceeded to play for about 5 hours without taking a break. Amazing!!

Quick history: Col Bruce Hampton & Aquarium Rescue Unit were crazy players in Atlanta in late 80's early 90's. Jimmy Herring, Jeff Sipe (drummer in this video), Oteil Burbridge, Matt Mundy and Col. Bruce. The band was too out there for main stream, but the talent was undeniable. Derek Trucks opened for them when he was like 13 and met Jimmy. Over the years, as each players chops became better known, they moved on to different things and Jimmy played in one of the post Jerry versions of the Dead, played with the Allmans for a while with Warren Haynes and with Derek and took over for Widespread Panic after Hauser died. Oteil, similarly, played with the Allmans for years and now is the bass player for Dead and company. But the original band was possibly the most talented group of rock players to play, sort of Mahuvishnu Orchestra if the leader was carnival barker / alien / andy kaufman wrestler type. But that will tie together a lot of the players and bands - jimmy, warren, derek, oteil, alma's, dead, panic.

I was talking about Jimmy in the store a month or so ago and mentioned Steve being one of Jimmy's idol's. : I used a B7 funk backtracking. I don’t know, perhaps because I’ve playing this for year, I don’t have problems to switch from b3 to 3 keeping the structure of the solo. I was basically doing what you suggested: 4 bars minor, 4 bars major, and then all mixed. I hear both intervals. I suppose it comes from years listening, for example, John Scofield.

Also, if you do more Herring, Panic and ARU are good, but in my opinion Jazz is Dead is one of the best bands every assembled. Also on “Georgia” from the “Pottery Pie” album by Jeff and Maria Muldaur” or even his solo in the Jesse Winchester version of “Third Rate Romance.” These really changed my concept of guitar solos completely. They might be hard to find - 1970s mostly, back when amps were coal-powered. Amos did the hall-of-fame solo on Maria Muldaur’s “Midnight at the Oasis.”

I would also add that while the Dominant 7 is opening him up to the use of major and minor, the 7#9 actually has implications of a fully diminished harmony because of the 5, flat7 and #9, which obscures the tonal palate even further, and by doing so, opens up what a skilled soloist can play and still make sound intentional.

ua-cam.com/video/wx7J1E4L8io/v-deo.html Kinda case in point. Lots and lots of diminished lines mixed into this seldom played dead song... And, Billy Cobham!

      @barleywhiner 3 роки тому

Hmm... Went home and looked at my keys and nope... That's a 7b9, no #9. Not sure what I'm hearing here. But the fact remains that with a 7#9, the only note that doesn't really work is the maj7.

You hit it on the head with tasteful. Jimmy is one of the most tasteful players out there. Someone else on here said "you know he can Row Jimmy," and hell yes I would def check out the live version of Jazz is Dead doing that song on Laughing Water. The guitar duel between Herring and Derek Trucks on that recording is simply perfection.

Super tight!…if you want to push a wee bit further you gotta set your sights for Phil & Friends from the early 2000’s. Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes (another giant to dedicate a show to) …talk about two guitar monsters! Do yourself a favor and at least snoop around for any material, you will not be disappointed. Love the show btw.

I love Jimmy Herrring! There was nothing better than when he and Derek Trucks were playing in the Allman Bros. Or the Dead. Not sure which but they sounded fantastic together. I’d like to see Jimmy Herring and Walter Trout jam with Phish.

When you get to Widespread Panic, choose a song with Mike Houser, their original lead guitarist. Preferably Space Wrangler, Holden Oversoul, Walkin' (For Your Love).

You should get a footswitch to operate the video player!
You could have basic controls... rewind (15 sec increments), play/pause, fast forward (15 sec increments).

Keyboard Maestro + any USB midi footswitch would take care of this pretty easily. Let me know if you're interested in the idea.
