      One of the reasons I’m moving away from GoPro cameras after owning almost every generation is the lack of N-1 software support. Imagine if Apple or Samsung were supporting their phones for just one year. GoPro is trying to make a buck by not supporting their existing products instead of meaningfully innovate on their new ones. Strategy which failed for many brands already.

      I am confused how DJI Action 4 just dropped I saw nothing prior to it and it seems same as DJI Action 3. I have DJI Action 2 10/10 due to the form factor of it and DJI Osmo Action which was my first camera ever and has been a total 10/10 always. I was disapointed to the low light performance of these two. Maybe thanks to my usage situations. For next action camera I will definetely give a try with gopro. Overheating is also issue for me with both DJI device I run now.

  • @tommydaynjer5334
    @tommydaynjer5334 9 місяців тому +3

    Thanks for all the details! I feel the real selling point for my use-case scenario is the fact they added the 8:7 aspect ratio in quite a few other settings, which is perfect because the option to change the aspect ratio from 16:9 and 9:16 later in post is the whole reason why I choose this over the others, so more than just the standard video!
    The GPS removal is inconvenient for international travelers. We used to just take a photo at a location with the gopro and get the gps data in a place that our phone might not be able to do that because it's in airplane mode normally. Still, I'm sure there's a workaround for that.
    The Hero 11 is still a great option, and if you really want that tripod mount you can just buy feet from a 3rd party manufacturer like Ulanzi that has been making them with the tripod mount for years.
    Again at the end of the day, the 8:7 aspect ratio is the deciding factor for me over the Osmo Action 4 - just being able to film one shot and then decide later if I want that as a normal 16:9 or share on social media as a 9:16 is SO flexible it's now a must-have after I used it with the Insta360 Go 2 all this time.

    • @MangoGino
      @MangoGino 9 місяців тому +1

      I thought about the 8:7 post edit aspect as well so I borrowed a friends GPH11. I use it for MTB, BMX, Motorcycles and it doesn’t capture wide enough. When you crop to portrait ratio, it cuts off the handlebar grips and in landscape ratio, it cuts off the sky and you can’t see the pedals. It’s ok to film your dog running or something, but if you need max width, better to do correct mounting. My 2 cents.

    • @choanlpoto
      @choanlpoto 9 місяців тому +1

      @@MangoGinonah you don’t crop with 8:7 bruh you setup your own hyper view to squish all the data in 16:9 or 9:16 😂

    • @tommydaynjer5334
      @tommydaynjer5334 9 місяців тому

      @@MangoGino so which did you wind up picking up for biking? I know the action 4 has that 155 FOV but that 10mp makes me really unsure about it. The fast mounting switch is a big selling point argument for me, as is the software reliability.
      I'm coming from the GP 9, which we all know is a software nightmare.

    • @MangoGino
      @MangoGino 9 місяців тому +1

      @@tommydaynjer5334 I have GP9 as well and tbh it’s still good. I upgraded to the Action 4 because of the mounting. It’s such a breeze going from vertical to horizontal, motorcycle helmet to MTB helmet, selfie stick to chest mount etc. I don’t take photos with it so the mp count doesn’t bother me. Another reason why I bought it is It definitely does better in low light, especially riding through the city at night.

    • @tommydaynjer5334
      @tommydaynjer5334 9 місяців тому

      @@MangoGino I had a GP 9 I liked but then they did a forced firmware update and it caused my rear screen to stop working. After complaining hard to them they replaced it with another GP9, but it has all the ridiculous software bugs that it isn't really usable for me now.
      This is why I'm hesitating on pulling the trigger beween a GP12 and an OA4. The GP12 has a ton of creative flexibility and the OA4 has speed/reliability. Hard decision for me.

    I just picked up the 12 at BB (open box BTW) yesterday. Aside from the fact that I regret decasing a 10 for FPV (there's only one case on market that doesn't cause overheating), the 12's features are worth it to me. The 11 didn't appeal to me, so I skipped it. I am not at all concerned about overheating, because I will use it as intended - short clips of maybe 2-3 minutes max. Anything longer takes too much time editing.

      yeah, you're right. GPS should have been left as option to the consumer, not GoPro. Adding rarely used pro features that 1% people use, like log, when flat profile is available, why not ProRes then? the BT chip has bad results with headphones, airpods etc. the idea is nice but the sound quality is bad.

    Hero 12 all the way, as someone upgrading from the Hero 7 Black it is not a question of is it a big upgrade from last years Hero 11 it is how big of an upgrade is it from My 5 Year old camera that still runs fine, it was the GPLOG and bluetooth mics that got me on board, along with compounding features from over the years like 4k/5.3k 24fps in linear not wide, horizon levelling.

    I believe GoPro have used the overlay usage data to determine that only 1% of users were using the GPS capability. If thats true then this is a big error on GoPro's part. Many people (myself included) use the GPS for geotagging all files created by the camera. Given the benefits of Hero 12 (MLM2.0 mainly) I can live without GPS but even if 5% of consumers decide not to upgrade, or worse, reach for an Action 4, then GoPro has made a mistake. Great video 👍

    • @octny
      @octny 6 місяців тому

      that 1% statistic is severely flawed since they assessed how many use the Quik mobile telemetry stickers. So first GoPro killed the desktop app, so you cannot add temeletry, then they made it cumbersome on Quik mobile, so people moved to third party apps. Then GoPro noticed nobody uses Quick. why not kill Quik mobile then using this logic since 1% people use it? I still have my previous gopros the 10, 9, 7, 6....etc each used for different purposes, all having GPS! for other tasks I use my mobile phones which do have HDR and optical zoom. Way to go GoPro! Maybe you add back GPS for the next model!

I’m impressed with all the improvements and don’t care about the loss of GPS. It would be interesting to all those who are complaining about no GPS is to performs test of the 11 with GPS enabled to see how much that truly impacts the overheating issues.

    The 12 was closer to the fan and also partly blocking the air flow to the 11, or at least warming up the air. That's probably not enough to explain the big difference, but a better and repeated multiple times test, preferably outside with an actual breeze, would be interesting.

    I get one hour and 52 minutes recording time at 1080 P 30 frames a second and everything turned off exactly like GoPro states in their battery stats page. Tested this with two brand new batteries and it is exactly the same. This is 45 minutes less than what GoPro tells me I should get. Why? I’m getting barely 30 minutes more at 1080 than I did with a GoPro 7! Ironically, when I film in 4K at 30 frames, I get 1 hour 28 minutes, four minutes less than what GoPro says I should get. I've seen a lot of comments said they'll choose DJI over GoPro, especially the Action 4 over Hero12 because it's more ease of use??? Well as for me, i will grab an Action camera definitely the image quality is the highest priority to me. As i have go through a lot of comparison video between these two Action cameras, i doesn't see the Action 4 can compete to Hero 12 in image quality, not to mention when Hero12 have a more solid Stabilization with the Auto Boost on and horizon lock, most importantly, a more flexibility for post editing because the image quality was really good on Hero12 on the 1st place. i don't know but, may be that is just my one man thought.

    The overheating improvements are nice and I hope GoPro keeps improving that aspect in future models. I got a hero 11 black with some enduro batteries to dive the Great Barrier Reef this last July. Water temps were around 20-23C which is pretty cool for swimming and yet I was plagued with overheating issues in the dive housing. UNDERWATER! I wasn’t even doing extremely long sessions. Mostly video bursts at POI’s and yet I would have to give the GoPro extended breaks, which was really disappointing.

      Do not worry. the overheating improvements are marketing hype! I tried the 12 on my bike and it shout down outside in Autumn with normal temps on Enduro Battery. My hero 10 with GPS, same battery, did not! You will be still plagued when diving with the dive housing due to overheating at any resolution above 2.7k60. I dare not try 4k60 with or without high bit rate, let alone 5.3k60 at any bitrate when scubadiving. The overheating improvements are just in lab conditions with fixed airflow.
