Step inside the pitch meeting that led to the Star Wars Holiday Special!
Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises in the world. But between the first and second movie, when nobody really knew what it was going to be-- they tried to capitalize on the success of A New Hope while working on Empire Strikes Back. That attempt took the form of the Star Wars Holiday Special, a made-for-TV movie that’s set in the Star Wars universe and featured Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Princess Leia, Chewbacca, and Chewbacca’s family. Okay, MOSTLY Chewbacca’s family actually.
The special raises a ton of questions- like why isn’t Luke blinking? Why does Chewbacca’s family have so many screens? How are they accessing live feeds of private establishments? Why did do the bad guys watch a full Jefferson Starship music video? Why is Bea Arthur here and why is she singing? What’s up with that weird virtual reality fantasy lady? And most importantly WHAT IS GOING ON?!

I am 51- I eagerly watched this on television back then.
I still recall vividly the horror of it all and the conversation at school the next day with my equally perplexed and disgusted friends.

What did people think about this, were they wondering why it was a thing, did they have any rampant theories about the franchise? Did the more informed people think it was an attempt at sabotaging the franchise from shady people in Hollywood? Or some sort of an "artistic" experiment gone wrong? Or the doing of drug-crazed individuals?
@@H3x4r35 We were 10-12 year old kids who had seen Star Wars multiple times. We played Star Wars on the playground. We had the toys. We thought the Holiday Special would be an action packed story with our heroes. Instead, it was this horrible, weird variety show.
The most perfect installment of the Star Wars franchise, George Lucas never felt he needed to retouch it.

I was fairly young in the 70s but it's my favorite era. Weird and cool stuff and sci fi was fun and clunky before Star Wars. Though SW is technically Sci Fi Fantasy I guess.
The Fisher Family will forever preserve a copy in honor of Carrie.

Whenever Carrie Fisher wanted her guests to leave her home after hosting a party, she would show the Star Wars Holiday Special. It worked every time. RIP Carrie Fisher.

I really love these pitch meeting, though I'm worried that I may have watched them all. If screenwriter guy and producer guy don't mind violating social-distancing policies to film more episodes, the whole community would really appreciate it.
That part was my favorite, so perfectly delivered

So this is going to be a family watching various things on screens throughout the house.
So the Holiday Special predicted life in 2020.
Even down to the VR semi-porn but totally safe for work music video, which is half of what you'll get if you start randomly clicking UA-cam's VR suggestions without knowing how to read Japanese.
But they didn't predict all the terrible horror shorts trying to jump scare you without telling you where the jump scare is. Or how people with VR cameras generally don't understand advanced concepts like "personal space" and "motion sickness".

The man behind this holiday special is Steve Binder. He is also the man who produced Elvis Presley's 1968 NBC Special, better known as "The Comeback Special," which is widely acclaimed, and credited with helping to revive Elvis's music career. Crazy how he can fall so hard.
I have this dim memory that it was George Lucas who insisted on the Chewbacca clan speaking entirely in growls, no sub-titles - and that's just the meddling that we know about. I guess getting ham-strung like that doesn't really bring out a director's motivation to go above and beyond.
This is one of my favorite pitch meetings. I’ve seen it *at least* 100 times and laugh every single time

I was in fourth grade when the original Star Wars came out. Like every kid at the time, I HAD to be home to see The Star Wars Holiday Special. (No VCRs back then.) This pitch meeting just triggered a PTSD episode that I'm still recovering from. Thanks a lot, Ryan....

I watch this review every few months, and always laugh my ass off at it. Just the best review of that total LSD-trip of a show. It took me years to convince my brothers that it actually existed and that it wasn't just something I imagined. Thank god for whoever videotaped it back in the day and circulated those tapes. A legit hero.
People think the special is a Mandela Effect.
The Mandalorian makes the special canon by referencing life day.. When Han says in Force Awakens "its all True all of it" He MEANS all of it
He's also using the rifle which was ONLY shown in the cartoon segment of the special when Boba Fett carries it.
It only makes Life day canon. Thrawn exists in rebels that doesn't make heir to the empire canon again.

Imagine being a young kid, excited to go the drive-in with his parents for some kind of Star Wars thing. And this is shown. And then The Island of Dr. Moreau (1977 film) was shown. I couldn't have been more than 7. It was a weird evening.

This was less than 5 years after the Rumble In The Jungle which was seen by about 50 million people live on pay-per-view, so CCTV technology was pretty advanced by this point, it's not that much of a logical leap.

I watched it when I was a kid, it wasn't weirder than any other variety show special of the time. In fact, I think even now many musical specials are still cringy. The shocking part for me was to see an unrecognizable Mark Hamill, and the best part was the Boba Fett presentation in the cartoon.
Yeah, I heard that happen right after the horrible car accident and resulting plastic surgery he was in. Oddly enough, I never really noticed it until I was a lot older and I actually read about it and even then I had to look at before and after pics. I'm actually still kinda surprised how i didn't notice it at all for so many years. LOL

Unlike some of you all, I remember watching this when it premiered as a 6 year old and walking away from it. My mother asked me why I was not watching it and I told her "because, there are no space fights." 😆😆
