  • I do a walk around after getting home from work. Had to make a cheat sheet so I wouldn't forget anything. After 10 months of mods I think I'm happy with what I ended up with. Now all that's left to do is ride it. Hope you enjoy and if anyone of you want info on any of my mods just email me or comment below

    Still miss the great stories of his police work. Robbo and i were both in oceanside in 1968, last year of high school for him, camp p. for me. Nice guy, answered so many of the guys who commented. God bless always.

    Thank you brother. Waited a log time to see this. You put in a bunch a work to get this looking as sharp as it does. Your expertise shows in your work. About the only thing I see still stock are your mirrors. Ride safe my friend.

    It looks great.
    I fell in love with the 72 Sportster after a harley test ride, but Ive been scared that the short range caused by the small tank would drive me to hate the bike. The 4.5 gallon tank is a nice option, and you did a great job with it too.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  10 років тому +1

      I fell in love with the 72 because it reminded me of my old chopper that only had a peanut tank on it. I'd forgotten how much of a pain it was constantly stopping for gas. I had to swap for a bigger tank. I just wish someone made a flat bottom peanut style in an FI 5 gal tank. They make them for carb bikes so maybe they will in the future. Thanks for watching & commenting

    Beautiful sportster. The 72 is one of the best looking harleys made. I rode a 2003 sportster for 10 years and they are a excellent bike. A bit uncomfortable for me as I got older but reliable as can be. Never repaired one thing in 10 years besides routine maintanence. I have a 2002 dyna wide glide now and I hope it's half the bike my sportster was. Mine was a 883 and that engine is indestructible.

      JohnnyRebKy Thank you I like so many different models from the 72 to the 48 to the Street Bob the Break Out the Road King & on & on. I was looking for an inexpensive commuter bike and the 72 fit the bill. I hope I get that good of service out of my Sportster. Enjoy the Dyna & thanks for commenting

      LOL Thanks! If I was they'd come with a 6 gal flat bottom tank like the old style Sportster & offer a springer front end & come with stage 1 upgrade, better air cleaners, pipes & optional spring seat from the factory

    • @InsanityHere
      @InsanityHere 10 років тому +1

      Robert Robb
      Yeah. That would about right for this bike.
      You certainly have a beautiful bike, and I want the same one, only denim black, with apes to match (and a little higher). Then, the first thing I do when I get it home, is pull the heads and send them out to one of the many shops that will basically, fill the heads with weld, and re-grind them out to achieve as close to a 100% cylinder fill without going by way of cam upgrade if possible.
      Before and after dyno tests.
      New hobby anyway, what the hell.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  10 років тому

      ***** IMO if they did this from the factory they'd save on the stock crap but would charge more for the springer & stage 1, just like they did on the FXSTS or on the CVO bikes. I think there'd be a market for them just like there was for those. I'd be willing to pay up front for those mods. As for my 4.5 gal tank it's the same one they use on the Sportster Custom

    • @hulkhatepunybanner
      @hulkhatepunybanner 10 років тому +1

      The Iron went from $7900 to $8300 for the next model year and the only difference I could see was a better gauge and some new buttons. Imagine how much more they'd charge if something noticeably different had been made standard.
      I think the only things made standard on entry level H-D bikes should be safety related, like ABS and LED headlamps.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  10 років тому

      ***** if HD did ABS the price would really jump as for the difference in Iron price was probably more to do with inflation rather than improvements & IMO their LED head light sucks. Sounds like you should check out other manufacturers that make just as nice if not better bikes for less money. HD charges a lot just for their name & don't need to advance design because people keep buying them.

    Robert I've seen this before just revisiting and have to say you have the best looking 72 I've ever seen the tank would be my choice not too keen on peanut tanks myself I'm a massive fan of the 72 but 6 ft 3 inch is a fraction too tall I feel to ride one but it's always the first bike I make a bee line for when I visit a HD store for a tyre kicking session

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  7 років тому +3

      Thank you That tank is a Sportster Custom 4.5 gal. model I painted myself. The 2.1 gal peanut tank just didn't cut it for me for mileage but i did like it's look I just needed it too be bigger! Being tall myself & having bad knees i need the forward controls so it limits what I can ride comfortably. Harley has discontinued the 72 model for 2017 :(

    Hey Rob, I'm looking for a new seat. Actually i got the LePera Bare Bone seat (it's not comfortable after 30 mins), and you say that Mustang Wide Vintage is more comfortable than the Mustang daytripper seat? Did you test it out?

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  6 років тому

      I've sat on the Mustang wide vintage seat on other bikes in the past and it had a lot more padding than the day tripper does, so yea IMO it's better but looks old school fat. Another seat I have & like is the Harley SunDowner two up seat. I've got one off Ebay for about $100 less than HD sells them for. I think you could find either one used on Ebay & maybe even do a trade? lots of people want the Le Pera because of it's name recognition

    I stumble across your videos a lot and enjoy them. Was wondering what your 72 looked like. Now I know! Very nice! Those 4.5 gal tanks can be kind of finicky. My light will come on and off at times depending on how hard I'm riding. With plenty of gas still in tank. Kind of annoying but eh whatever.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 років тому

      Yea that's everyones complaint with the FI Sportser especially if you raise your tank the light comes on sooner.
      Thanks for watching & commenting

    • @angealarenas9554
      @angealarenas9554 8 років тому +1

      +Robert Robb if the tank wasn't raised, would the light still come on sooner? also, how many miles per gallon do you get now? (on average) im torn between a 3.3 and 4.5 gallon tank replacement for my 72.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 років тому

      Angel Arenas If the tank was at stock height I'd get more distance btn fill ups before the light comes on because the fuel pick up would stay covered in gas longer but the light still comes on way to soon IMO. I average 40 mpg with all my mods, stock is 50 mpg. I choose the 4.5 gal because I wanted to get the most range out of it. The 4.5 isn't that much bigger than the 3.3 & looks cool

    • @angealarenas9554
      @angealarenas9554 8 років тому +1

      +Robert Robb yes sir, it's absolutely amazing... thank you for sharing. so filling up, would you say maybe 200 miles till the warning light?

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 років тому

      stock height & no performance mods with a 4.5 gal tank @ 50 mpg I'd guess light would come on around 150 - 175 miles leaving you with 1 or 1.5 gals in the tank. Mine comes on at 100 miles because of the lift & performance mods @ 40 mpg leaving 1.5 gals in the tank. I doubt anyone gets 200 miles without the light coming on unless they get better than factory claimed mileage or maybe the 883 engine?
      If you're looking for longer distance get a stock Street Bob with 6 gear trans & bigger tank?

  • @LionelHumphreys
    @LionelHumphreys 9 років тому +7

    Hey Robert Robb! I know its been awhile since you posted this video but I wanted to know if you are still using the manual idle control valve and if you had any issues with it? I'm looking to get one and wanted to know where you got yours at. Thanks so much for any info you may have.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому +1

      I'm no longer using it. It became to much trouble having to manually adjust it as the bike warmed up in traffic & I always forgot to turn it back before starting it cold LOL
      If you decide to get one I got it at www.american-motors.us
      It was kind of a pain to remove stock controler to install the manual control. You have to remove the gas tank to get to the bolts & heat the bolts to loosen the lock tite used by the factory to remove the small bolts and the break easily. I don't think it's worth the trouble & costs just to be able to get that Harley low idle sound

    Hi Robert, After watching many videos of yours I got myself 2015 72. When you installed 4" riser did you need to change any cables? Thanks.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому

      Danny Sano Hi hope you enjoy your new 72I had to modify some cables but not buy/change out cables or wires.
      for the throttle side I simply bent the cables from 90* downward to achieve extra length needed. For brake line I moved clamp rubber piece on line. For clutch there was just enough length but I do plan to buy a longer steel covered cable in future. Doing wire tuck & tank lift gave me enough extra length in control wires on bars.

    i just got the same tank for my 48 and i was wondering if you purchased the large capacity fuel tank kit that harley recommends or if you just used all the existing parts and gaskets?

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому

      Saul Flores I re-used my existing fuel pump with gasket out of the stock 72 tank. I have no idea why you would need or what would be different about Harleys large capacity fuel tank kit. I looked at it & it looked just like my stock 72 pump. If you're careful removing & installing yours you won't need a new gasket or any other parts. It's a tight fit to get in & out so be very careful so you don't destroy any part of it.

    Looking for some exhaust info. I've got v & h short shots on my superlow and they sound like a Harley but to loud for me. I'm thinking of the screamin eagle slip ons, what are they like for noise. I'm wanting something which sounds like a Harley but not very loud. The stock pipes sound poor. Thanks Andy

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому

      Andy Stott you can always experiment with different baffles to lower the decibels in the V&H. I don't know how V&H short shots would work with any slip on muffler I don't think they were designed for that but I could be wrong. I'd contact V&H see what they say.
      I bet you could find someone who'd trade you Harley pipes with Screaming Eagles slip ons or another brand slip on for those V&H.
      Any slip on with the baffles in would be better than the stock mufflers but quieter than the V&H short shots even with baffles in those. V&H are very loud
      I removed my baffles in the SE & installed DK Custom TTI's. They're loud if you're not wearing a full face helmet

    beautiful bike Robert! I'm in the process of buying a 72 or a fat boy quick question since the 72 has a skinnier tire in the front do you feel the ground impact more ? and all the cracks on the ground while riding opposed to a fatter front tire ? reason I asked since on your other video you said you've had many different bikes and I want to make a right first purchase of my bike thanks!

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 років тому +1

      +SionFts Dragon Thanks & yes you do fel the cracks etc in the road more with the skinnier front tire & lighter bike. If I had to choose between a Sportster or a Fat boy for my only bike I'd choose the Fat boy. But since you say this will be your first bike you might want to consider a Street Bob It's a level between those two & better suited as a first bike than a Fat Bob. If price is a factor you might look at the Sportster 48 I think it's better suited as a first bike than the 72. I wouldn't recommend the 72 as a first bike IMO

      yea the stock seat sucks! I even tried taking it apart and put in a gel pad and moved it back a little but still not as good as an after market seat like the Mustang. The HD Sundowner is the most comfy I've found so far but it looks bulky on the 72 looks better on a Custom. I'm making a solo spring seat fro the 72 to try out later but got side lined with the Softail work to be done

    I'm very bias to the old school peanut tank. I ride a 2003 1200 with a 3.3. I like the old school chopper look usually on Sporties. But I actually quite shocked to say that I like that 4.5 on there. It looks real good. And plus you can ride about 150 miles before filling it up. How much more do you like the progressive shocks in the back compared to the stock?

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому

      I like the old Sportster style tanks also. That's one of the things I liked about the 72 but I couldn't take having to stop at the gas station 1 or 2 times a day to fill up on longer rides. I wish someone would make a larger tank that style for the FI bikes. When they do I'll buy one. The rounded 4.5 gal Custom Sportster tank was all I could find besides the 5 gal Indian Larry style tank with the dished sides which I didn't care for as much. People have a hard time figuring out what model it is. With that tank on it it looks like a much bigger Harley. Those who don't know bikes that well think it is LOL
      The progressive shocks are a little better than stock but if I had to do it over again I'd try the "Burley" shorter shocks & see if they're better than HD or Progressives. If I didn't want to lower the rear I'd try air shocks off a bigger Harley for a softer ride. But I wanted to slam it while still being able to ride two up occasionally. Thanks for commenting.

    Hi,, who did you say made your air cleaner cover,, I'm running a stealth S&S air cleaner,, which you can use your old stock football Style air cleaner cover, but I'm just looking for a small Billet cover to screw into the center,, just cover up the black outer filter cover
    . I guess I can go to a machine shop have him plasma cut me one,
    Anyway thanks for the video, any extra information on air cleaner cover much appreciated..

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  7 років тому

      The air cleaner is actually a custom cleaner for a car I found on line & I adapted it to the backing plate for a Sportster I also found on line by drilling new bolt mounting holes & widening the hole to the throttle body base & I used DK Custom's outlaw breather bolts. You can find similar 5" dia. air covers at local auto parts stores that use K&N filters & adapt the base to fit. Since this I've changed to DK Customs 636 outlaw air cleaner That flows much more air for better performance.
      Check you local Jr College see if they've got a CAD / machine class that teaches making billet parts & get a student to do one for you?

    • @dawnrobb8809

      I don't have a video showing how I made it. You can now buy brackets from DK Customs to move your seat back. You don't have to make your own. Then just drill a new hole in the fender for the rear mount blind nut. I also removed the middle rear fender bolt & replaced with a button head bolt so the seat doesn't slip into it anymore. You can mount the new bracket to the factory bracket by drilling two holes & bolting it on the front bracket or remove the seat covering & replace the stock bracket with the new bracket then replace the seat cover

    The position I see people riding the bike doesn't seem ergonomic. But as you open saying you commute with it.. makes it more interesting. I like the old looking bikes and loving yours. If you could answer my question you will be welcome. Oh btw the question is... how is it to sit and ride for longer trips alike a day ride or a couple. Thanks

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому

      good question, wish I had a good answer,but. I'm 63 yrs old, have more injuries than I can remember, need 6 different surgeries, according to my doctors I shouldn't even be riding. I find the riding position of the 72 to be like sitting in a recliner with an engine on wheels. In my opinion better then sitting up straight or laying over the tank both of which would kill my back. I can't ride for more than 3 hrs or couple hundred miles at a time. When I was young & healthy I rode a rigid frame chopper that was same sitting style and could ride all day. Depending on your situation you may or may not like the 72. It's meant to be a short commuter bar hopper bike. If you want a bike for long trips I'd suggest a cruiser or sport touring bike depending on what you like. I'd like a Can Am Spyder for long trips myself
      Thanks for your question

    Hey Rob, about how much of a pain / cost was it to switch out the tank? I know you said buying the two tanks from jp was a pain, but I mean other than that. Thanks!

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 років тому

      +Juan Morales The tank cost around $250= & I spent about another $100= on body filler & paint etc.
      Besides the problem with JP Cycles the hardest part was just getting the right amount of red metal flake mixed into the clear to match the factory paint which surprisingly I got lucky on with my second test spray
      I used the original fuel pump & gasket & mounting bolts & shortened the over flow hose by just cutting it
      I had to make a mount to move the 72 seat back about an inch because it sticks forward more than a seat for a 48 or custom but that wasn't that hard to do.
      It's actually very easy aside from the painting unless you have experience painting like I do

    • @kingjuanimal
      @kingjuanimal 8 років тому +1

      Thanks for the reply Robert! As I have said before, I think your bike looks great, and I want to modify my 72 some as well. The tank is one of the top things I am looking at right now in changing, and I am excited about it. I watch a video of you mentioning that the gas light would come on, but you would still have 2 gallons of gas or so still, and that perhaps if the tank wasn''t lifted it would be better (in that sense), so if I don't have to do a lift, I don't think I will.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  8 років тому +2

      Juan Morales You're welcome. Yea the light will come on later & you'll get to use more of the gas in the tank if you don't lift it, just because of how the fuel pump pick up is located inside the tank. HD's internal fuel pump design is a joke, IMHO
      P.S. I forgot to mention the $100= it cost for the HD decal off of E bay ( HD doesn't sell them anymore )
      Good luck

      Yes 1st it has a small gas tank only good for around town. If you plan to ride further get a 48 or Custom or plan on swapping out to a larger tank. 2 cd it has forward controls & most people prefer mid controls, easier to learn on. Test ride both a 72 & 48 before you purchase a bike. 3 rd If you plan on riding with friends that have sport bikes plan on being at the back as most liter sport bikes can out rev & run a stock Sportster any day. 4 th with the longer front end & larger front wheel they handle much differently then other bikes & take getting used to. 5th if you're dead set on a Harley look at the Street Bob It's bigger & better & you'll keep it longer IMO. If you're not set on a Harley test ride other bikes to see what best fits you & your riding style Good luck on whatever you purchase

      Internet; Chrome short shot pipes similar to V&H short shots ( not on in this video replaced HD SE slip ons w/ DK Custom TTI's ), LaPera spring seat ( replaced Mustang seat in video from J&P Cycles ), LED head light bulb, Cobra FI 2000R fuel unit, I removed the manual idle control ( didn't like it )
      Indy shop; Shinko 777 www tires
      I hope this satisfies your curiousity There might be other little things I forgot?

      Yeah, I have no interest in stopping every 100 miles. My Night Train was pretty thirsty with that carbureted TC 88, Screamin' Eagle intake, and Paughco Goose-Neck Drag Pipes, but I still got a couple hundred miles + per tank.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому +1

      bigdogbuc That's a big problem with their newer FI bikes that have the internal pump. You don't get to use all the gas inside the tank because of the location of the fuel pick up inside. With the older carb'd bikes it just mattered where your petcock set on the tank & you got a lot more distance between fill ups. IDK if other bike manufacturers have the same problem with their FI bikes

    • @loknlode
      @loknlode 9 років тому +1

      Robert Robb I just noticed your tank emblem is the same one that came on my Night Train. Nice. Oddly, I think I've changed my mind and I'm going to go for the 72. The more I looked at it, the more I realized I was basically going to turn the Iron into the 72; Forward Controls, 1200 Conversion, taller bars, etc. By the time I spent the time and money doing it all, it would cost me as much as the 72. And the payment would only be about $35 more a month. Plus, I love the laced wheels and "narrow glide" front end, which reminds me of the Wide Glide on my old Night Train. I'm still not digging the low fuel capacity, but I'll get past it. If you figure out how to get the full 4 gallons out of yours, let us know.

    • @dawnrobb8809
      @dawnrobb8809  9 років тому

      bigdogbuc Yea you can't get new decals anymore as most of them are painted on at the factory now. The Night Train decal was the nicest one I could find for sale that I liked. I like the laced wheels over the cast wheels also but it seems they're using more cast wheels now. Even if I hadn't done the tank lift I still wouldn't use all the gas in the tank because of the design of the internal fuel pump/filter system for the FI bikes. If Harley had an external pump system it'd be better but they put it inside for cooling reasons. Just got to get an extra fuel tank/bag like La Rosa makes I guess. Enjoy your new bike, they're fun!
