      @Tomn8er  6 років тому +21

      That's a good idea. Of course 1st place would have to because it would be ridiculous to not have the reigning Mr O return to defend his title but there's no reason spots 2-5 shouldn't have to re-qualify

    • @jenidu9642

      Well, it would benefit everyone more if even phil had to requilify each year.
      If only phil would quilify though it would be a little bit harder for the other top guys to dethrown him.

    It's very simple: Because the bodies now suck. I keep saying this; A bodybuilding body used to be something that a person would watch and say to themselves "wow, i wish a had a beautiful body like that". No one is saying that with these muscle freaks. I dont care about drying out to the point where your cheek bones are popping out of your face or striated glutes or boasting about one huge bodypart that ruins the rest of the symmetry of a physique. Case in point, Big ramys quads, lee priests arms, dorians back etc.

      With you on Ramy and Dorian but are you really saying Lee Priest had a bad physique? Guy looked awesome in his prime! Still does imo. I also prefer the physiques in the earlier days between 70s and mid 90s though, so i'm happy about the classic physique division.

If I was bodybuilding in the 80's, early 90's I would probabaly do waaaaay more shows than that. Seems like they need a point system, now I don't know much about shows beside the Olympia. So I think
    A win in a top tier show would be worth 10 point a place only 8
    A win in a mid tier show would be 6 for a win 4 for a place
    Lesser tier show 3 points for a win 1 for a place.
    To be offered a place in the Olympia you need 12 for the year.

  • @loho316

    I also think social media plays a part, everything is readily available, thus makes it not that exciting, while in the 90's people were waiting anxiously for the magazines to come out, or sitting in front of Eurosport or something, or vhs video coming out. That said however, the 90's was simply better on every level, no offense, but just look at your slideshow in the video. The physiques were much better, the trainingvideos from the past are much more hardcore and motivating (Maryland muscle machine, coleman the unbelievable, yates blood and guts,...), more charismatisc personalities in the sport, Joe and ben weider were still alive and I think they still wanted that old school feeling in the bodybuilding scene, the lighting and stages at the shows were much better, guys did way more shows as you said (one grand prix after another, the biggest names, gosh I get excited just talking about it), the legendary posing routines (yates 93', levrone 02', Shawn ray 99',...) true women bodybuilding was still alive (I mean common, lenda murray, what a physique!, btw she looks phenomenal today! I always thought women bodybuilding should have stayed, it reminds me of the 90's and it had its place next to men's bodybuilding in my view),... I think the IFBB needs indeed to rethink a lot of stuff and not only creating one new category after another, please start to focus on the main event, men's open, and make it exciting again (more shows with big names, more focus on shape, symmetry, instead of insulin mass mass mass,...) like in the past, from the 60's to the 90's/beginning 2000's, with 90's being the absolute climax! Those pictures from the Arnold classics and grand prix's in the 90's, those were the days, look at those freakin' line ups, what an exciting time for bb it was!

  • @simenandersen3262
    @simenandersen3262 6 років тому +2

    I think it comes down to laziness.
    Getting ready for a show is fucking hard, and the bodybuilders in the 90's took pride in working hard. Powerhouses like Dorian Yates, Levrone, and Coleman focused on lifting heavy. Now, bench pressing and deadlifting a lot of weight isn't necesserily important in bodybuilding. But it gives you pride, self-esteem, and motivation to keep fighting because you know that you are a strong motherfucker.
    But looking at today's bodybuilder's training videos, it feels like they wanna do ''just enough''. And they are not following those strict routines as the 90's bodybuilders did. In the 90's they went underground, eating, drinking, and shitting bodybuilding. Today, bodybuilders are forced to travel around to be ''ambassadors'' for the sport. They are more interested in earning easy money by travelling around, signing autographs and selling supplements instead of doing the bodybuilding.

    IFBB could make a rule that all bodybuilders must place top 3 in a sanctioned competition, every year, to qualify for the Olympia. It would bring the upper echelon out to the Arnold at least and would spur top 16 guys to compete more frequently and the lower echelon would have to up their game to get a check. Might also cause physiques to be less grotesque because they can't pump the same amount of juice year round.

    I thoroughly agree with the points you've made in this video. The top pros saving themselves for one competition? its an outrage. I have to admit I did think & want Mcmilian 2 win the 2017 Arnold Classic. his condition physique and posing was refreshing and in short awesome. You covered everything Id want to say so to repeat your script but less convincingly is silly. i do hope something is done about the poor attendance of the top pros in the comps for 2018! Seeing some comments on here about the IFBB not paying bodybuilders salaries to compete. That simply isn't true. The IFBB (Wieders) has been paying salaries to these guys for many years. From Flex, Ronnie, etc. In an interview with RX Muscle just last week Jean Pierre Feux (spell check) said Wieder was paying him $84,000 a year to compete, and that was in the late 90s. The schtick is that the Olympia pays so much more and has so much more emphasis put on it that it makes other shows seem obsolete. I think the Tomn8ter nailed it here.

    The sport is dying. Partially why some only compete in the Olympia is because some consider it to be more difficult to prepare for two major shows who are months apart, it being very physically demanding. When you can just train all year to earn the best title in bodybuilding history. Plus people like Phil have dissed Arnold saying he didn't have legs and I'm pretty sure that would affect their placing.

It wasn't a thing for the top guys back then to put their name to supplement lines they may not even have created. Dorian Yates earned around $100,000 to win the Mr Olympia. Phil Heath makes over $400,000 to do the same today in a weaker talent pool of GH guts.

    I'd say it's to do a lot with the current drug use habits. Getting your drugs across borders is very hard since 911 and heightened airport security, and not only is it harder they need to bring way more with them. This crop of bodybuilders just can't the size and hardness they want to without the insane amount they're almost all on now. If they toned down the drugs they're organs could take it better, and they'd be more consistent, and find it a lot easier to get them across borders, or arrange them ahead of time.

    The reason is before prejugding night, bodybuilder must take diuretic. Week before that nigh, bodybuilder must increase then decrease water to almost zero. If they compete too frequently, their kidney will be fuck up. Bodybuilding become boring not because bodybuilder compete less, but because 90% of good genetic guy change to compete at men physicque or classic physicque.

    Isn't part of the problem people don't want to do this sport now? The drugs, the health? I mean before the mass monsters the lifestyle that was promoted was 'fitness' and that just doesn't fly now.

  • @Supramedical68
    @Supramedical68 7 років тому

    If they're spending 15k plus on drugs for a lesser show with no real prize money it may not be worth it? Also, if they had mandatory shows 3 times a year spread out, they probably wouldn't have much time to cycle off their gear.

    look point blank period a bodybuilder can make more money doing other things than competing and when it comes to the Olympia you already know who's going to win Phil will even if he's off the Arnold Schwarzenegger syndrome and you don't get paid much competition wise and it's not worth it really

    I agree the competition sucks nowadays but I disagree with most that the golden era was the 90's. In my opinion the golden era was the 90's and the 00's. From 2000-07 the Olympia was the Ronnie vs. Jay rivalry. Gunter competed till about 05 or 06 and he was the uncrowned mr.o of 02. Levrone competed till 03. Cormier was still there. There was Victor Martinez I could keep going on and on. So yea I think the golden era from the competitive point of view extended into the 00's.

      The competition may have been there but the physiques had already started to decline. 2006 imo was the worst Olympia in recent history the top two (Jay and Ronnie) looked awful. Even by 2000 Ronnie had pretty much lost his aesthetic appeal

  • @petercharron187

    It's boring because Heath is not the best, he did not look the best at the O, and I truly believe won just because they wanted another 7x winner. I think even if he competes in bad shape they will keep giving him the title untill he retires. Smh.

    Easy fix, the only automatic Olympia qualifier is the top 3 at the Olympia not the top 6. From 4-10 have to requalify, see easy fix.

    It's all about money. MrOlympia prizes are so high that this guys want to be in top shape during this one event.

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  6 років тому

      They're really not though. Most these guys in the top 10 get like 20-50k in prize money - it's peanuts!

    • @walooss
      @walooss 6 років тому

      I meant MrOlympia prizes are high compared to other Pro Shows. They have no reasons to compete there. No money, no ranking points, no glory. Maybe if their sponsors have interes in their participation, but BB dont have any ads on their body so this is quite unlikly scenario.
      The only solution is: IFBB require of few starts in a season, in order to activate a qualification they had earlier won.
      Thanks for reply, i hope you understand my English, I'm form the other side of the world :)

    the problem it synthetic bodybuilding. to keep high level of mass with help steroids is bad for their health. if was natural they could compete more often. also the show have to be close together because can keep very low body fat for short amount of time.

    Bodybuilding got all the attention it did because of Arnold; a bodybuilder lucky enough to be a Hollywood A star. Now that there's no bona fide bodybuilder in the spotlight, obviously the sport will start to fizzle. Hate to say it but bodybuilding may go back to being as popular as it was before Arnold.

    Maybe it's the beating their bodies take from all the drugs, dehydration, etc. Why compete in smaller shows when they can give it their all in the biggest show

    it's a different world now... 1st place for the Olympia is up to $400,000... why should Phil Heath compete in any other show? He has absolutely nothing to gain and everything to lose... for example he competes at the Arnold and wins...people will say oh he beat sub-standard competition, if he comes in off and places 2nd... that could put a ton of pressure on him to rebound at the Olympia.... so with those stakes and that kind of prize money - hate to say it but it's pretty clear to me why Phil Heath only competes at the Olympia

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  7 років тому +3

      Yeah Phil Heath sure but what about the other guys in the top 6?

    • @frankmogavero6052
      @frankmogavero6052 7 років тому

      they usually do compete in all the European tour shows immediately following the Olympia. Dexter Jackson for example competed in at least 4-5 other shows shortly after the Olympia last year. Another thing to consider, bodybuilding is boring because there is no rivalry.... when Ronnie and Jay were placing 1 @ 2 there was a lot of build up to those shows to see if Jay could finally beat him etc

    • @Tomn8er
      @Tomn8er  7 років тому +1

      Yeah but those shows are all over in a couple weeks and nobody cares because it's small fries after the Olympia. They usually place them in the same order anyway. So basically we get to see the top guys compete one month out of the year... lame!

    • @bertblomsma2250

      I disagree with you, Frank Mogavero. Compare it to tennis: the number one competes in all major tournaments and more. He doesn't win them all and he sure doesn't have to do it for the money any more, but that doesn't seem to hurt his ego or image. You cannot expect from someone that he always will win every time he competes.

    • @frankmogavero6052
      @frankmogavero6052 7 років тому +1

      so in tennis if it's not for the money then why do they compete in all the tournaments rather than the major ones? Are they contractually obligated? I'm asking because I don't really follow tennis
