To reiterate: the purpose of this video is not to shame, blame or belittle any one individual, but rather to point out systemic issues that exist within the industry at large, and the inherent dangers of living this lifestyle.
The featured workout clips were just something to talk over. These guys were chosen simply because they represent some of the best bodybuilders competing today and the footage was of high quality. (See links in the description).

No, you managed to shame, blame and belittle most of us! Tired of well meaning lectures at this point. You aren't telling us anything we all don't already know and what has been hashed over now ad nauseam. Changes are needed but most of us are not in a position to bring that about individually, neither are you! As a group we can exert such pressures as we are able but I for one am ready to get back to emphasizing the true joy of the sport and let all of us big boys keep our own counsel. And as with other sports having dangers involved with participation as so many do, you don't through the baby out with the bathwater. Should Nascar revert to the soapbox derby just because today's cars are dangerously fast. I don't think so. And I'm sure the greats who have given their lives behind the wheel would feel dishonored if their deaths were used to that effect. Same goes with our fallen brethren. Well, lets be honest. Aren't we - as the fans - contributing to this? We basically want these guys to push the limit. When they don't come "in shape", it's the fans that will say "he missed the mark", "he was off", "disappointing showing", "he needs to come in drier next time" etc. Don't we push these guys to take diuretics and stuff to get drier and drier? Not saying it's the fans "fault", but i can imagine its definetly a contributing factor.

This is exactly what I thought a year ago when I discovered bodybuilding, also we gotta realize that not only fans want to see them like this, but more importantly, the judges. As soon as you show some indications that you're not perfectly hydrated your placement is gonna be much worse than if you were. IMO that is even worse than disappointing us because as much as they care about us, they are all bodybuilder to make a legacy, so they want the best track record no matter the cost.

thats why bodybuilding as a sport is pretty stupid imo - it is entirely subjective and unnatural
any sports that has "judges" that are entirely responsible for rankings is BS to me
the aspects of which a body should be deemed better or aesthetic or more appealing or even just saying looking better is nothing you can quantify in an objective manner
hence shit as synthol or similar stuff appeared etc. those big muscles often aren't funtional at all and many of the bodybuilders that just look very big aren't strong at all considering their enormous size so my question is what is the point of looking strong if your organs fail and you actually aren't even strong
like a huge overstatement of the own appearance
watch ppl like dmitry klokov that are strong af not necessarily natural but entirely flexible and looking healthy and strong
the appeal of pro BB was lost to me in my mid 20's as i realized it isn't worth it at all

HEARTILY DISAGREE!! As a general rule the fat person is out if shape and fat is more voluminous that muscle. Two men both weighing 300 lbs one muscluar and one fat; the Muscular fellow will seem much trimmer compared to the one carrying the fat. The muscular person is more fit, his heart should be in far better condition than the fat person's. The heart is a muscle; the good care the fit fellow has taken of his body to cause it to produce skeletal muscle should also cause it to produce a stronger more resilient heart (barring extreme steriod abuse of course) Therefore, you can safely bet the muscular 300 lber will in general out perform and out live the one of same weight but composed of fat. Stay fit and muscular and be healthy. And remember moderation in all things is best so staying under 300lbs is probably a good choice for most of us. I agree wholeheartedly but I am pessimistic about any meaningful changing being made by the IFBB.
While this year was shocking in the frequency of deaths it hardly belies the underlying trend. The neglect for human life and health has been apparent for decades and the IFBB has never taken responsibility for their athletes, rather seeing them as convenient independent contractors who have to pay to compete and do all their advertising for them.

I've followed this “sport” for the last 11-12 yrs. But I'm about ready to stop. The culture of vanity in lieu of health was always weird to me, and its really culminated this yr with the deaths. The way Keone was criticized for conditioning just days after George passed (with literal death face conditioning) was the real nail in the coffin. Health>Muscle.

Pro bodybuilding has never been healthy. Is it worse that ever? Not sure. Look at all the guys with life threatening kidney problems in the early 2000s.
People want to see freaks and looking freaky can't be healthy. And some athletes want that freaky factor. Personally I much prefer the look of the 70s/80s but what can you do.

My dad was a Navy Corpsman and noticed that in a lot of the footage of nurses giving injections, they don't aspirate the needle. He's was pretty taken aback, to say the least.

Scared to lose another shining individual with passion and drive and love in his heart. Im scared that more people will die in the name of entertaining others and for a sport that glorifies what leads to their deaths. As a fan of bodybuilding to my core, I don’t know if I can watch this anymore. I can’t support a sport that kills so many people who I admire. These people on stage are like gods and they burn twice as bright but half as long, and I’d rather see them live a long and fulfilling life instead. Hey Tom, I'm a former infectious disease researcher (how hosts interact with viruses was the specialty for my PhD). There is very little evidence for aspirating needles for IM injections. The claims about the prevalence of accidental IV injections don't seem to have evidence and the study upon which this claim is based was conducted in mice and has significant evidence of fraud. Similarly, the most recent study on myocarditis had a severe math error that led to a giant overestimation in prevalence. Myocarditis in both infection and vaccination (it's higher in infection) seems to be tied to robustness of immune system (which is why it hits adolescent/younger men in particular). Unless we have evidence that directly links infection or vaccination to the deaths, this isn't the most responsible speculation. However, you are correct that bodybuilders should be checking their biomarkers (and this is recommended by the CDC if you are concerned about myocarditis). Hope this sheds some light! I'm not an immunologist or virologist but I'm relatively close.

I feel like if the judges stopped rewarding physiques the huge open class physiques that have become popular and started rewarding downsized, more appealing physiques, like 80’s physiques, the bodybuilders themselves would be much healthier. Like you said, classic physique is a great middle ground, where there is some enhancement, but not nearly as much and the bodies themselves are much more appealing to the general public. I personally find the open class much more interesting and fun to watch, but if entertainment is going to be placed above people’s health, I don’t want to support it

I’m not an anti-vaxxer, quite the opposite actually but hear me out. I got COVID before any of the vaccines were available (tested positive so it wasn’t a case of mistaking the flu) and the symptoms for me were very mild. In fact I was on a zoom call with a bunch of friends whilst in isolation and they were surprised when I told them I was currently suffering from the disease. The vaccine however, that hit me much harder, albeit for 3-4 days for both shots whereas my symptoms from COVID lingered for about a 12 days. The headaches, muscle aches and fever were all much more severe for me after the vaccine and this is supposedly down to your immune response, people with a stronger immune system will have a stronger/worse reaction. This is pure speculation but like you, given that body builders insides are teetering on the edge of failure due to all the gear and excess weight I wouldn’t be surprised if they are prone to extremely adverse reactions to the vaccine.

It’s kind of sad where we’re at. I’ve been regularly following the Mr Olympia since around 1985. I don’t remember hearing about many bodybuilder deaths until we started getting into the 90’s. I remember Benaziza and Munzer dying, but I believe they were from diuretics. Then by the late 90’s people started popping off. It’s really kind of sad. I’ve always been a fan of the 80’s and earlier. Just personal taste. These guys were massive and chiseled like gods but could still wear a pair of jeans and run to catch a bus.

The ifbb needs to change the criteria to reward aesthetics, forcing the competitors to downsize. I also think mandatory blood tests as well as doctors/professionals hired by the ifbb to help athletes should be established. But knowing the ifbb that will never happen.

"While bodybuilders might look healthy on the outside, they have BMI's comparable to the morbidly obese"
Very true, a lot of people confuse a bodybuilders physique for a healthy one. A bodybuilders physique is an extreme sport, that's like comparing high-speed alpine skiing to the bunny slope. You need to dedicate your life to it, and it's not exactly healthy, and that's not even mentioning the effects of PED's...

It's important to emphasize that your chance of death or clotting related complications are FAR greater from covid itself versus the vaccine. It's an easy numbers game. You minimize (not eliminate) risk to your health by choosing to vaccinate.
In terms of aspiration for IM injections, the most up to date literature shows that it's only necessary for dorsogluteal injections because it's the only injection site that you'd be remotely close to a major artery.

Just little note to Rich and Dallas:
Rich was taking not only steroids but every kind of drugs you can possibly think of. I think anyone expected different end of this.
Dallas was taking extreme amount of gear. One one these drugs was insuline, which is one of the most unpredictable doping drug in general. Rumors sayes some of drugs he was taking wasn't even smart to use for bodybuilding pursoses (like EPO, which isn't claimed to be used 100%). Another aspect with Dallas was that whenever medical issue appeared, he just started to skipping meeting with doctors. Just lol. What a fucking suprise that he was dead at 26 y.o.

Actually it’s becoming more common for most nursing schools and courses it is being taught now to not aspirate. There are some negatives to both aspirating and not aspirating however it has only become that way recently.
Not saying you’re wrong but I’m just saying it WAS the correct way to not aspirate in the past but in recent years it is beginning to not be thought of as the best choice.
But again there are pluses and minuses to both probably depending on the compound.

I think another factor might be the average age of the competitors now. Most (but not all) of the classic bodybuilders from the 70's and 80's were retired by 30. I think it's possible that because many competitors are older (40 or close to 40) it puts them at a greater risk. I know there are outliers (Dallas McCarver was in his 20's), but this may be one of the biggest factors, assuming that "C" isn't playing some kind of a role in this.

What's your explanation for guys of the past eras that continue into their 40s or heck some like Al Beckles into his 60s and are still here? Its not how old you are. It's 2 other factors: A. Frist and foremost you have to be honest with yourself or pay attention to experienced trainers or Medics who evaluate your body type, genetics and potential. Too many dive full blast into the sport with bodies that just aren't meant for it. They massively abuse PEDs and everything imaginable; SEOs diuretics etc to escape from that basic fact. And the price they pay for this gargantuan lie to themselves and the fans that come to support them can be death. 2. Even the guy with the favorable and good genetics can screw up his health if he doesn't go about building his physique the right way. That's a variable that differs slightly from individual to individual and the older Weider Instinctive Principle really can't be replaced. Basically you have to go slow, steadily and with determined study as to how every aspect of what you apply to your regime effects you and be quick and amenable to make changes if what your doing is not agreeable to your overall health even if it's getting great results for others or even you. If it's causing you undue stress; if it's throwing off your blood work to beyond what's acceptable stop and readjust; there's always another angle to try. There's always another technique to use that will give you the desired responses within the parameters of reasonable good health. It's slow, it's laborious, its massively difficult and there are no real shortcuts even with modest use of gear. Its a decade long endeavor to become a top level champion at least. But if you've got the body for it and take the long slow route, with passion and dedication you'll get there and stay there like the Al Beckles and Dexter Jacksons of the sport. Many of the young deaths are because the athlete lied to himself from the start and this was not his/her best choice of sport to begin with. The whole industry cannot be demonized due to the fact its so attractive a sport that some enter it when they'd be better off engaged in another pursuit. Its kind of a complement to the sport that so many want to be a part of it they're willing to die to do so but we must be firm and discourage those that don't have what it takes early on before they risk their health. As a trainer myself I have the need to do that far more than I'd like but those who take my advice to channel their efforts elsewhere are alive and happy in the endeavor they were meant for as are the rare few which enter our sport with my encouragement. Best Jurassic Jack ISSA Certified Fitness Trainer former Mr Mass Media x6 and Grand Elite Masters Champion x2 1991-1998 now in my 60s.

fun fact: a lot of people are not even interested in being healthy or longevity, all they want is the result they dream of wether it's glory, fame, wealth or just big muscle period. They just don't care about the rest so even if you try to "save" them from dying young there's no use, they have made up their minds and are 10000% focused on the goal no matter the cost. Would you rather live to the fullest, achieve all you dream of at the cos of dying at 45 or live a boring, unfulfilled rut until 90?
