    Hi Nicole, I have several vandas that I have grown in Milwaukee, Wisconsin for 6+ years [the first and oldest] with varying degrees of success. During the summer they are outside and get eased into full sunlight. But during our long winters they're grown in my basement. I have several banks of LEDs so they're getting plenty of light. I run a humidifier when the lights are on, I don't want to get mold or fungus problems keeping them on at night. I have 4 that are grown bareroot, 1with some Spanish moss the rest in baskets without any root coverings. I have had some root issues, but nothing major. I do mist the roots daily, and I soak them for 20+ minutes when I water the rest of the orchids. They all have bloomed, except for 1, they however do not bloom regularly. Overall I am happy with them. I know that they could do better with more perfect conditions but I have done as well as I could. I might try to pot 1 to see how they do.
    Thanks for your videos, I really appreciate them.

      That's very inspiring! It sounds like you found a set up that works well in conditions that are not ideal. So nice to hear that you've bloomed many of them. Thanks for sharing the way you care for them! I'm going to pin this comment as I think it can be helpful for other indoor vanda growers.

    I live in Southwest Pennsylvania and grow Neofinetias and an Ascofinetia Cherry Blossom. I originally had them in traditional Japanese style but last summer was a headache with half of the mound drying and the top center inside too wet. Now they are in plastic neo pots with 5A Sphagnum Moss and tiny bark chips. The axis is getting more air. The newest neo even bloomed 2 weeks after purchase. Enjoyed watching this video on the larger vanda repot.

      I'm glad you found a set up that works well in your environment! It always takes some experimentation. What works well in one environment, may not translate as well in another. Always nice to see them bloom shortly after as well 💘

    "where there's a will..." is my motto too for my vandas here in NYC. I dove off the deep-end and started collecting vandas early on in my orchid collecting, many moons ago, and have gone through all kinds of grow set-ups for vandas. So far, the set up you showed here is the one very similar to my own right now and its proven to be the least stressful and most productive for both plant and me. I was delighted to see those beautiful roots so youre definitely doing right by that vanda (sorry, pot).

      Totally! I think the vandas really enjoy our humid summers, but getting them in a set up that they can thrive through winter is challenging. Thank you for watching!

    Hi Nicole, I live in Maryland and have two vandas growing in my grow room in LECA self-watering and they are doing well. I've had them for about 18 months and they did loose most of their old roots but the new ones came in and went directly into the LECA!! Yippee!!

    haha my mouth dropped when you started cutting that pot! I had to cut the biggest of the bangkok sunsets out of a basket and that was a pain! I am thinking about putting my vandas in those wire hanging baskets with coco fiber and bark (and maybe some moss but thats tbd) so I can hang them outside for summer once the temps are above 60 at night and make a wire stand thing like a tomato cage for winter so I can put them in my grow tent for winter.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 роки тому +1

      I've had to cut so many 😭 I'm so sick of those slotted pots, they usually turn out to be a headache for me to deal with, so I've slowly transitioned to other set ups. The wire hanging baskets will probably work well with medium if you can't water as much or have dryer conditions. Thanks for watching!

      If you didn't get it in good shape, it certainly wasn't set up for success and I'd try again. It's frustrating when you spend so long on an orchid and it just slowly declines. If you start again, I think all will work out ❤️

    I'm in Ohio 6a/b and I even though I have a whole house humidifier set to about 50% but I grow my vandas in a grow tent with a grow light, heater, fan and a humidifier for winter. I don't a lot of window space or just space so that's the best solution I could get. In the tent I have my humidifier set to 85% but my thermometer says anywhere from high 50%-70%. Also in my care I have new roots and active root tip growth, I potted them in bark in plastic pots.

    OMG are you able to get your indoor vandas to bloom! I have been struggling to get any of them to bloom indoors. And the one time two of them actually started growing a flower spike a thrip got REAL nasty. It was the saddest thing ever.
    Im in Atlanta, GA so our humidity levels are much higher than NY. I typically will soak them in my bathtub with fertilizer and then do another soak a couple days later with regular water. I noticed after a while the roots will start to turn black (not rot or mushy) Does this happen to you too? Any help is appreciated!
    p.s. a third of my Vandas crownrotted/grew keikis from this past spring weather. My neighbor watered the outdoor flower pots after work so they got wet at night. SO SAD! BUT, the beautiful thing is that they all put out 3/4 keikis on each vanda.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  2 роки тому

      Not all of them! I actually killed a few this summer! The Neofinetia Vandas and the hybrids crossed with neo are the ones that do best for me. I agree that they need a ton of humidity. I fell behind on watering this summer and a few kicked the bucket :(( I'm going to keep trying but I need to be diligent with the humidity and making sure the roots don't stay wet. Thank you for watching ❤️

      @@NicoleDeanna Yeah its so weird! The roots are not rotting...I did some more research and I think it has to do with the fact that I was using a fertilizer that is not the best and is probably too high TDS with using non RO water. I switched over to an MSU formulation so things should get better. And started fertilizing with water fromm the fridge! xD

    I really wanted inorganic media so I don't have to buy bark and spagmoss (spag is expensive!) but with leca you need to keep it wet or it will dry out roots, lava rock is really porus and it would be hard to get roots off, but I really wanted seramis and I can't find it anywhere in the US. I mean I like the bark setup I just didn't want to keep buying it

I only have 5 at the moment but one of my phals is really vigorous she is growing a ton of new roots and is in a 6in terra cotta pot I might re pot her in the summer so it's not that (hopefully) difficult. Have a question for you dear..Is a Vanda simular to phals,or Oncidium??

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  27 днів тому

      They are different. They require much more light than phals and oncidiums, even more light than cattelays. Also their roots require tons of moisture but air. They are more difficult for me to grow in NYC, and I've killed a few trying to grow them. They do well in humid conditions bare root, but indoors, it's tough but doable if you can keep up with watering them!
