right, i bought the game right when it was announced being fan of the dont starved franchise but ive never been able to make it very far since it’s so overwhelming and complicated
It's very encouraged to play world after world and go at your own pace. Trust me when I say that I also felt overwhelmed just getting to the Slime Biomes, and now I can comfortably dig through them without too much hassle. However, I still have yet to go beyond. The game can be really overwhelming if you go into it all at once, but if you go slowly, and even go for new worlds, you'll get the hang of it!
As someone with 2000 hours in the game, it gets better. If you lose your colony, its usually a multitude of factors that chain reacted. The more you can make your dupe's lives easier the better they perform. Those 50 or 100 dupe challenges are interesting but its really brute forcing labor to progress. Teamwork makes the dream work.
One of the biggest mistake people make, including me, is rushing it. Yes, its very tempting to build and get more advanced tech, more dups, bigger base. but you should do it very slowly, only when the colony is sustainable at a smaller size, then get bigger.

You sit there, on your couch, maybe with your dinner or just after work, watching some guy playing a game in your library. Slowly you will see your eyebrows meet, you want to lie down a bit, your mind is now walking between the line of conformity and serenity as you look at those little guys running around mining or showering. You wake up after a while, the LED light from the screen is the only thing you give your eyes to. This was not the first time, nor the last.

Just began the game blind, and I got concerned when you put the coal gens in the upper part, mine are down down down behind a buncha airlocks and insulation
The coal generators will fill up the pit, where he placed his food storage, with co2 which will be a sterile environment, and his food will last longer. Personally I do the same, until my food pit is full of co2, then I rebuild the generators elsewhere, usually outside my base to keep the central area from overheating.
Any recommendations on things not to do for above average players. I always get decently far into progression but eventually the dupes stop doing what I ask almost like there getting locked into a minimum amount of tasks.
Dupes will only do what tasks they have time for. You are either queuing up too many tasks, or don't have enough dupes. Each machine you build needs 1 dupe to operate it, so 10 different machines will need 10 dupes, plus you will need additional dupes running around storing materials, operating switches etc. Specialize your dupes, you only need 1 researcher, 1 cook, 1 decorator, 1 mechatronics engineer, 2 miner/builders, 1 rancher, 1 farmer (if you are doing crops), and a couple of dupes just doing general dogsbody stuff. Some dupes will be capable of doing multiple things, but researching, cooking and ranching will be full time occupations for those dupes, so don't recruit multiples of those workers, with the possible exception of ranchers (who can look after 5 full ranches each). Automation is your friend, so recruit or train a mechatronics engineer, then have him build autosweepers to automate coal generator feeders, ranch feeders, etc etc. One autosweeper inside a ranch will transfer food between the storage bin and the feeders, for the critters, and pick up any eggs laid, coal dropped, meat dropped when they die etc, and can load it all up onto the rails, where it can be transported anywhere you like, that is a lot of dupe labour saved. There are a number of tutorials on automation on youtube, so go do some viewing, then you'll be able to tackle the game more intelligently. :)
