As a novice machanic I've changed the oil in my XTX two days ago, man it feels greaaaat! Even tho it took me 3 hours I'm very happy. Thanks for your videos MC!
One thing you may want to add to the procedure, pouring a few oz of fresh oil into the new oil filter before lubricating the gasket & installing it is always a good idea. It only takes an extra 10 seconds, and allows your bike to have less "dry time" after an oil change. If you notice the first time starting your bike after an oil change the oil pressure warning light will stay on for a couple seconds. This is because the bike is "dry" when started with a brand new (empty) oil filter and it takes a moment for the pump to cycle oil through the system and into the filter thus creating proper pressure/lubrication and turning off the oil warning lamp. If you fill your new filter with oil before installing it, the time is takes to turn the oil light off is usually no longer than on any typical first start of the day. This puts less wear on your engine components and especially on a bike that has seen or will see many many miles and years of riding every little bit of premature wear you can remove from the equation is good!
I've never filled the oil filter (not saying it's stupid or a bad idea!) and have never had an oil pressure warning. Oil changes always seem to be a polarizing topic, to each their own I suppose!
I suggest filling the oil filter with oil before installing. You will see the red oil pressure light go out almost instantly on start-up. Less time with the engine running without oil pressure. If you are careful there will be little to no oil spill from the filter. Once you start the filter on the threads the oil doesn't spill out. Just be sure to fill the filter only thru the center hole.
I'm not an expert on bikes, but with cars and trucks you really only need to do that when it's a big diesel engine. Cars don't need that. I assume bike's oil filters more closely resemble cars rather than diesel trucks.
A thing to add would be to filter your used oil to check for metal flakes and alike; this will indicate problems within your engine and requires further investigation.
This is so helpful to bikers who doesn't want to waste money on labor fee when visiting motorcycle shops for servicing. Thumbs up to motorycyclist magazine !!
Not that it was worth mentioning in the video, but make sure the old filter seal doesn't stick to the block. Double up the seals and you'll have a mess on your floor. Speaking from experience
your crankcase is already vented through the PCV system. thats the tube that runs from the case to the airbox, or to a catch can. or to a stupid little.pod filter if you drive a 1998 riced out honda civic
I recommend to tighten the filter 1/4 turn after hand tight especially if its seal is an o ring not flat ring & replace the crush washer if its not built in the bolt & finally let the oil drain for the next day...gd luck!
It's also worth noting for novice mechanics that while most new filters come with oil pre-applied to the O-ring, you should still apply oil because you don't know how long that filter's been sitting on the shelf/in the warehouse and how old that oil is.
My buddy told me if you want 100% clean then rebuild the engine. There is always some old oil in the engine. Compare your service manual on rebuilt engine oil quantity, vs oil with filter, vs only oil change.
loving all the videos Ari. You explain things precisely and very easily for people to understand. thank you. Was wondering if its possible to do a video on changing the Sump and also what gasket sealant to use when and where. keep up the good work.
I ride a sportbike and haven’t been able to ride it very often. I’m not due for an oil change for another thousand miles. But it’s been almost a year since it was changed last. Should I change my oil now? Or wait until I hit the milage listed in my owners manual?
Does the bike need to be level when draining the oil? If I use a rear stand, which lifts the rear wheel off the ground, will the oil drain out fully? Would it be wise to use electric oil pump to get most oil out as possible?
can i change oilfilter without change oil? i want to change filter but im worried i need to change oil to and i used an expensive brand of oil and i dont want it to go to waste
Once I found out just how easy it was to change my airfilter, I realized that I had always overestimated small maintenance. Can’t wait to get to work on my Swift. Manyautosltd.com is my car doctor and I really appreciate their team for being such sweetheart
After riding for some time the oil level went beyond max level . Now when i checked in the morning the oil level is at max level.. I rode it a bit and checked , it's perfect, but when the engine is piping hot, the oil level goes beyond max
Is it possible to change oil color from yellowish to blueish when draining in the next change oil for about 2 kilometer run, is it normal? Or what are the factor that may affects it changing color, i used blue 98 octane gasoline, thanks..
Tighten the oil filter 1/2 turn. What about vibrations from the engine, will it not make the oil filter get loose? So that you have to tighten it again after a few hundred miles?
Make sure to pour oil into the filter as well so that it doesn't start completely dry. Use synthetic oil, a magnetic drain plug and change it often. Screw what the manual says. It is a high performance engine which has a wet clutch, thus breaking down the oil even faster. Would you treat your Ferrari engine that way just to save a couple bucks?
+Motorcyclist Magazine Cool, thanks! I was going to do that this weekend. Maybe I'll wait. I know the clutch plates are shot, but I'm not sure if I need to replace the steel plates and the springs. My clutch has a very small "friction zone". Could that be due to weak springs? (They bike is 40 years old)
You guy should do a brake bleeding video. I know it's simple and there's plenty of videos, but on some bikes getting all the air out is nearly impossible. The air bubbles are just SO stubborn. For example, bleeding my friend's Bandit 1200S when he installed SS lines was ridiculous. There was sufficient pressure and it was fine, but it just wasn't good as before. I tried bleeding from the banjo bolt connections and it definitely helped, but it still was not quite as good as before.
Lube your clutch cable or replace it. Then follow this - 1. Probably a wrong grade of engine oil 2. Clutch wear 3. Spring(The last thing you should expect) Check and replace in that order.
Can you say something about what to de when a bike seems to burn oil? My bike seems to burn some oil and i need to fill up a bit every once in a while. I see no oil stains on the engine, nor blue smoek, etc... nevertheless it seems to burn some oil. Are oil additives that promise to halp helpful or harmful? Garage says it is normal.... But my other bikes never used oil, so I am not sure how to go about it.
Hey can anyone please tell me if the procedure is different for changing oil in an oil cooled engine? Oil coolers use the same oil from the engine's oil sump right? Or is It separate?
yep still uses the same oil from the crank. usually I also remove the oil cooler and its hose and shake it until a quart of oil comes out or it stops dripping.
When should i change my motorcycle oil and oil filter. I just want to know the time period. And do i really need to change my oil filter everytime when i change the oil? Please answer for me brother? I really need to know
Question relative to the filler cap, do you recommend leaving the filler cap off when draining the old oil? I don't recall seeing the filler cap being mentioned during draining. Love the videos keep'em coming.
+BIGGZ46 From my experience engines with separate gear box (as car engines) tends to get the oil thicker by the mileage, so it's an old (car) mechanic trick to remove the filler cap to help "thicker" oil drain down easily. Motorcycle engines tends to get the oil thinner after mileage, so i don't think that there is a need to open filler cap for help an almost water viscosity oil to drain down.
just a question. i got a brand new bike and after a few days i noticed from oil window that the engine oil is very low, below the bottom line. the question is is it safe to change oil even its brand new?
That can happen, the people that did your pre delivery inspection were lazy lol. Just add a bit more of the correct grade, don’t worry too much about mixing a bit of different oil in. You can change it, but if it’s brand new it’s kind of a waste. Change it around 1000km when the break in is done.
Good & informative video. My RE classic350 BS3 (equivalent to euro3) runs very little. August 2019 at kms 7500 I changed engine oil & filter. After that I did 1400 kms in my bike, but it's nearing a year. What is your opinion, do I need to change the engine oil & filter now ? I used semi synthetic oil, manufacturer recommended grade.
No need to buy expensive oil filters as I got 5 filters for my new suzuki gsxs 125 from alliexpress for less than €9 and I used one of them last week on its first 800km oil change and the bike runs brilliantly on them and they seem to be of good quality.
Hey Ari. Excellent channel and a great fan of ur work. I have a 2016 yamaha r1s. Got it November of 2017. Was unable to put a lot of miles due to bad weather in NY. I have about 400 miles on it. I know the first oil change is 600 miles. I have a event coming up which is about 400 miles. Do I charge the oil before the ride or stretch it and change the oil after I come which would make 800 miles in total
Hey there, I'm kinda perplexed after changing oil, it seems my bike is running a lot hotter than before. I noticed when i drove to my friend's shop to get my mud guard installed and my oil changed, it was running okay, but after the oil change, the engine is running a lot hotter, any reason for this? Previous oil according to the previous owner was mineral oil 20-50, right now I'm using Castrol Power 1 semi synthetic 10-40. Thanks
can i get permission to get your video for my school project? my project for how to learn basic service. so i need your video to put on my school project. don't worry. i'll put your link on my project as reference. thank you
Changed my oil for the first time about a month ago. Half of the oil spilled on my driveway and about 6oz of new oil spilled down the side of my engine. Took a couple days riding to burn it all off, aha.
Gbata111 2 Read owners manual and find the right one. Then, bleed and flush the system clean. Refill proper oil and replace the filter. Dunno about the pump situation though
MC magazine much love for your vids from the Netherlands. I have a question can you explain why i am not allowd to put full syn oil with my half syn oil or the other way around? (Thats what they tell me here but nobody had a clear answer) it could be bad for my engines but don't know why
Most modern 4 stroke bikes use the same oil because the engine and gearbox are one unit and the same oil lubricates the whole engine and gearbox assembly. Some bikes use a different oil in each because the engine and gearbox are two units. Old British bikes for example. Some old bikes like the Triumph Trident/BSA Rocket 3 used three different oils for engine, gearbox and the primary drive chain. 2-strokes have just gearbox oil, the engine being lubricated by the 2-stroke oil added to the fuel mixture directly into the fuel tank (old MZ for example) or via a separate oil tank and pump.
Motorcyclist Magazine is the best motorcycle youtube channel in America (Close second, or tie to MCN, but with more content, and not in Britain). Also, is there a way to make trying to start a kick start moto easier?
Thanks for the reply! It's a KLR250, and I think I may have done some engine damage running it too hard. Cleaned the carb, changed the spark plug, no dice, gave up for 6 months. Mainly because I ran out of energy trying to kick start it.
+imgooley A technique I learned repairing small engines is to drip a little bit of oil down into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and rotate the engine by hand to work it down in between the rings.
Oil slides to the bottom. Turning on your engine recirculates oil, and lubes your engine. It May be because drainning the oil leaves air pockets in the system, and the oil pump May not circulate oil correctly till after a few seconds, so it's best that your engine already has a film of oil lubricating its inside before changing the oil
I noticed Ari uses Belray a lot on the videos, for those who use the product, how is it? would it be better to go with 3rd party products (Belray, Castrol, Motul, etc) versus what's written on owner's manual (Yamalube, as I own FZ-07)???
Motorex 4 KTM, Motul 4 Yamaha etc. Much of a muchness. All do the same thing. I go with a brand readily available locally at short notice to avoid mixing brands. (Motul) My bikes are Triumph, Husky & Suzuki. Buy the best oils & lubes you can afford from each brand. I find Yama products pricier than Motul for no real gain.
It's kinda funny how different each motorcycle is. On this, you need a strap wrench to take out the oil filter, but on an SR400, it's 3 screws on the side of the engine and it pops right out.
Just after 600km after my bike's servicing, the engine oil turned deep black. It looks a bit viscous but it bites me a lot. Is this something to be concerned of? I use a gixxer 150. Thanks in advance.
I dont think its an issue, oil changes its color pretty soon. Sometimes even sooner than 300km. Usually its not about a color, but density. 600km oil can be black but its going to be less dense and dirty than 5000km oil, but still almost same in color.
is it bad that I crank my motorcycle for less than 5 seconds just to get the few bits of oil out? I mean there is still a lot of used oil left in the cams and pump. about 250ml goes out draining. and I usually do this right after riding where the oil is still hot, I wear leather gloves so no worries, just so the pistons and cams will still have little oil when I crank them and hopefully not do much wear to the engine parts
This makes air go into the oil system, and potentially could lead to parts not receiving enough oil while the pump sucks in the new oil. If it harms the engine or not I can't say.
My mechanic uses his air compressor and sprays air into the oil area to get some of the old oil out. I wouldn't recommend running the engine without any oil in.
All Honda's from 2006 forward call for 10w 30. Pro Honda oil has the GN4 mineral oil in 10w 30 (black bottle) and they also have HP4S full synthetic in 10w 30 (red bottle). These oils are made specifically for Honda motorcycles. That's what you should be using. I have a 2011 CBR 1000RR and I only use Pro Honda HP4S full synthetic 10w 30. 10w 40 is too thick for the tolerance in Honda engines.
Honda HP4S full synthetic. It's all I run in my 500r and 650r. I change it every 3k miles or every spring. It's worth it if your planning on keeping your bike for a long time (over 75k miles)
You forgot a couple key points when you do the filter one you want to make sure the old gasket came off and to if you can fill the filter up before installing it.
I see you put hiflo racing filter, i want to change oil filter on my yamaha r1, 2006.i use hiflo filter, but my question is, should i use normal or racing hiflo filter?
Sir, i baught new honda unicorn 160, 1st august 2017, After changing my biker's engine oil, the engine caps were to close, it took some sands and I closed it without being clean, Is that a little sands of oil stainer filter? Or will my whole engine get worse? please answer me, i have no extra money for new one
Actually no, a rear stand is perfect bc it levels your bike out straight and gives the actual reading vs. on its kickstand, which tilts your bike to the side making it seem like there is less oil than there really is.
Oil Service schedule, 500 miles or 1 month, whichever comes first. 10,000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first Does synthetic motor oil go bad after 1 year if you don't reach the mileage interval? Why would you change the oil every year if the bike does not see the mileage?

And if you don't have the strap wrench or don't want to buy one, you can just use your belt. It works!

Thanks. I have plenty of ratchet webbing. I'm sure I can cut some into a makeshift wrench. That'll save me a fiver, cheers.
how many qts u put in a oil change
@@davidking5454 depends on what ur motorcycle calls for
I really admire the way this guy talks about motorbikes... the videos are really educative... I've been looking to buying a Yamaha YZF-R6....

That is the reason why i like vertical downwards facing filters. Fill to the top, screw in instant pressure.
Just scrolled the comments to find this advice or to write it by my own ))
I'm not an expert on bikes, but with cars and trucks you really only need to do that when it's a big diesel engine. Cars don't need that. I assume bike's oil filters more closely resemble cars rather than diesel trucks.
Well, given that motorcycles have smal oil filters and small oil pumps then the time to fill up the oil filter by the pump alone is significant.
My oil filter is sideways, so I can't really do that without spilling oil everywhere
I work on cars but I’m trying to expand my horizons by working on bikes, boats, and maybe airplanes. A good video!
I always flush my engine with organic sea water. Then recycle my used oil on my neighbors lawn. I try to be environmentally conscious.
One of YT's best comments
Lmfao... Idk why I'm still laughing on this
Greta would surely approve of this.
lol
The used oil ls going back home... Back to mother earth😌
A thing to add would be to filter your used oil to check for metal flakes and alike; this will indicate problems within your engine and requires further investigation.

Ahaha. Old man has done this recently, pissed oil down on the asphalt in the street. Not a good look.
Did the same thing on my truck smh
thanks for all your help man. MC GARAGE THE GOAT
all videos from this guy are so informative and useful. Ur making my life easier, thank u
Great video. I would remove the oil filler cap prior to removing the drain plug to allow positive venting of the crankcase.
your crankcase is already vented through the PCV system. thats the tube that runs from the case to the airbox, or to a catch can. or to a stupid little.pod filter if you drive a 1998 riced out honda civic

Thanks buddy 👍 been that long since I've done an oil change I forgotten how to do it correctly 👌

Should you flush your engine oil as well? Can you do a video on if it is good or bad?
While changing engine oil the oil shooter is must or not compulsory..is good using oil shooter and mos2 additive is good for engine
I've heard some people will run the engine then drain it again so it's running clear .. should you advise that or is that just a waste of oil ..
Nahh, it doesn't need to be 100% clean. Some residual old oil is fine
My buddy told me if you want 100% clean then rebuild the engine. There is always some old oil in the engine. Compare your service manual on rebuilt engine oil quantity, vs oil with filter, vs only oil change.
Do u guys change only these 2( oil and filter) in a motorcycle?! And how long until the next change of filter?
Will changing my engine oil make my gear changes smoother? I find when my bike is warm it won't change gears smoothly
I’m not racing but I ride it pretty hard. Should I just change it when the oil in the sight starts to look darkish?
It's also a good tip to loosen your fill hole first so you can be sure that you can refill the engine.
loving all the videos Ari. You explain things precisely and very easily for people to understand. thank you. Was wondering if its possible to do a video on changing the Sump and also what gasket sealant to use when and where. keep up the good work.
Ari please make a video about engine oil flush...its uses and does it harm engine
Well Done ! Keep continue your good work.
Do you need a new oil filter after every time you change your oil?

Hello sir.if its ok because i accidentally on my mc engine 30 secondsi forgot my oil are drain.what happen to my motorcycle help me sir pls
Changed my oil for the first time about a month ago. Half of the oil spilled on my driveway and about 6oz of new oil spilled down the side of my engine. Took a couple days riding to burn it all off, aha.
I bought a bike and the pervious owner used 20w 50 but the engine cap says 10w 40. What should I do?
Bike runs fine no issues.
Is gearbox oil different from engine oil in motorbikes

How often should I change oil on cbr600rr 2004? I use conventional oil now
GujaratiHonda I had an oil analysis done on my 2008 cbr600rr with Honda Gn-4 conventional oil. It was good only for 3,000 miles.
Super well done! Very professional. Thank you!
Thank you very much. This is very helpful.
+imgooley A technique I learned repairing small engines is to drip a little bit of oil down into the cylinder through the spark plug hole and rotate the engine by hand to work it down in between the rings.
i will give that a try!, if I can't figure it out, i'll pull the head off and see what the deal is.
So my bike makes noise when ever I pull in my clutch lever any idea what it can be?
love ur channel man
Why should i need to wormup the engine before drain the old oil. Where engine oil gets more viscosity in high temperature?? Plz explain
Only bc it will drain faster and more completely, cold oil will drain too, just much slower
I find Yama products pricier than Motul for no real gain.
hey, this is very informative, thanx sir
Ari, aserious question here; "do oil car have any bad effect when used for bike?"
Is this fj-09 his own bike?
I would not be running any engine without oil. I just buy and extra quart and dump it in to flush anything out.
Which oil would you recommend for a cbr 600rr ? Street driven ?
Peanut oil.
You forgot a couple key points when you do the filter one you want to make sure the old gasket came off and to if you can fill the filter up before installing it.
is there any way to join your garage
Hey there, What's your reasoning for not filling the new filter with fresh oil before putting it back? Kind Regards RocketWorx
Because it mounts horizontal. The oil would just run out all over the exhaust and make a mess.
fuel filter and air filter replacment pls thanks
look at his eyes, hes baked
Hahahha when he say don't call Dwayne Johnson to tight the screw
Loved ur content.
I see you put hiflo racing filter, i want to change oil filter on my yamaha r1, 2006.i use hiflo filter, but my question is, should i use normal or racing hiflo filter?
Sir, i baught new honda unicorn 160, 1st august 2017,
After changing my biker's engine oil, the engine caps were to close, it took some sands and I closed it without being clean,
Is that a little sands of oil stainer filter?
Or will my whole engine get worse?
please answer me,
i have no extra money for new one
Won’t having your bike on a rear stand give a false reading on the oil level?
Actually no, a rear stand is perfect bc it levels your bike out straight and gives the actual reading vs. on its kickstand, which tilts your bike to the side making it seem like there is less oil than there really is.
Oil Service schedule, 500 miles or 1 month, whichever comes first. 10,000 miles or 1 year whichever comes first
Does synthetic motor oil go bad after 1 year if you don't reach the mileage interval? Why would you change the oil every year if the bike does not see the mileage?
U r great brau...
