I'm literally in tears right now hearing that beautiful brown skinned girl say that she wants to be born beige. I hope she can see her beauty and importance in this world. But the boy who chose the darkest doll to be the smart one because his dad is smart brought happy tears. It hurts my heart to know kids feel bad about their skin color. We're all God's children. Everyone is beautiful if their heart is loving and accepting and they're good people.

Sadly I’ve seen in India people want women to be as light as possible and see it as true beauty instead of darkness. It’s disgusting how even children are made to think thus

When you know people personally, they are no longer stereotyped. Psychology studies show it's easy to be racist if you have no contact with people, eg, posted job applicants. When they handed over the resume / cv face to face and chat, discrimination drops greatly. This child experiment also supports this hypothesis.

I believe this study is incomplete. We recently did a similar study but with more of a background study on the students and children participating. The part about society playing a strong influence remained true; however, family influence also played a major factor. For example (and this is going to be a very general review of just one instance), we had two children of (nearly) the same skin color and race. Interestingly, one of the students had a father that strongly approved of another race to a point that the implication was that that race was superior to their own. Unsurprisingly, that student picked the toy/doll that the father would emphasis was superior. This was not a doll that shared the child's own skin color. The other student also picked another race; however, we came to learn that the father often berated the child and told him/her that he/she was "bad" if they did something unfavorable. We gathered that the child's view of self was negative and had chosen toy/toll of another skin color. This is obviously not complete as well but the point is that there are many different factors that come into play so rather than saying we'll never know why, we should focus on healthy mental development from a young age.

Isn’t it crazy, I’d prefer a darker complexion. I still haven’t grasped the understanding. Because when I was little I had a mixed race friend. And I thought she was so beautiful! Her hair, eyes, beautiful skin that glowed. And she was sad. We were very little, but it stuck with me, because as a little white girl my heart broke for this girl, and no matter what I said she felt the same 😭I would’ve done anything to have her beautiful colouring. She didn’t believe me, but it’s from my heart. Still wake up in a freight with not knowing how to console her 😭

I thank god every day for my existence and I wouldn't change who I am because God made me that way. As far as I'm concerned everyone is equal in my mind and should love themselves at least their race because God made them that way. I judge people on their personality and I treat everyone with respect and avoid those that don't treat me with the same respect. It only matters what's inside a person not what's outside.

Interesting video. In Asia especially is discriminating based on skin colour due to racism or elitism - they are different. I have had many 1st hand experiences of certain stereotypes : dark skin = working outside = poor. This is not to do with race - simply elitism.. so many in Asia spend a lot of money on skin whitener - the driver here is predominantly to not look poor. In Thailand for example many want to be whiter skinned - not to be a foreigner - simply a whiter Thai. True example : A Chinese colleague once asked my NZ (white) colleague what his family did for work : Oh my parents are farmers he replied!! Chinese colleague says "oh sorry to hear that" as he visualised them as peasant farmers.. My NZ colleagues parents own a farm maybe a similar size to Changi. 🙃

as a Chinese person, I can agree. In Asia (usually east) we think whiter skin are richer and more elite (stereotype). So some usually use foundation way lighter than their natural skin tone, or use whitener. This does not mean we are racist (though I can’t argue that some ppl are) but WE just think that lighter skin is more elite. No offence to the darker skinned people, you guys are just as beautiful and sometimes even I am jealous of your skin. So many dark skinned ppl HAVE SUCH CLEAR SKIN LIKE OMG???

Same as me, I always wanted to be white even though I am black. I cried in front of my family when I was little just because I wanted to be white, that is how bad I wanted to be white. I would love to see similar tests in area's with black kids only, or Asian kids only, or white kids only.
Not city area's, but relatively remote area's.
On those locations the kids don't really often see many different kids.
I mean, if you go to a city you'll see piles of different kids with differend backgrounds, but if you go to area's with a low people density, you'll see white kids who have never seen black kids. Or black kids who have never seen white kids.
That way the odds of the child already having experience with kids with other skincolors are a lot lower, so they can't really know what such a kid is like.
Also, I would like to see what they would do it you put a blue, or a green doll in between, would they think it's a smart doll, or dumb, or sick or not a human at all?

We aren’t apples, green apples may often taste sour and you may like or dislike them, but these are individual people and the reason some may behave differently is because of their personality or/and life experiences, not because of their skin color (which could be a factor, but even then, it’s others that judge them for it, not the color itself having an effect on their brain or whatever racists think)

It is extremely sad to see all these children suffering from such a young age.... in this world and in the human condition of our century, as the global situations are, children can be imoacted and then live in prejudice just at the heard of tiny fractures of meanings, or words, or information. Who knows at the end of the day how the global information that we create as humans, at a world wide level, how it is actually impacting us....?!?? I might even believe that the information is impacting us even if we are not faced directly with the obvious signs... words or face expressions or even being impacted directly.... I think that the global information existent around us.... planetary.... like a layer around us, it is in fact impacting all of us!!!!

Personally I don’t think the problem is, that children see the race first. That is something we all do….trying to distinguish people from what they look like. And we usually use the names, if we know them afterwards.
The problem is not that people see the color of the skin, as long as it is as neutral as color of hair or eyes.
And we should not over interpret: A lot of adults would like to change something at their looks. The whole make up industry and hair color or perm producing industry would not exist otherwise.
But that doesn’t mean that we all hate ourselves.

Plus, with tv and internet shows...I dont think this issue is as prevalent. Toddlers learn color. So obviously they will see skin color. The look of mom and dad (if safe) determines what theyd feel best about.
