4- to 6-Year-Olds Review Dolls Of Different Skin Colours | Regardless Of Race

  • The famous “doll test” was first tried in the 1940s in the United States, where African-American children responded to dolls of different skin tones. What happened when the experiment was recreated in Singapore, for the programme Regardless Of Race: 5 Years On, with pre-schoolers from the minority races?
    The results are disheartening: Just like in America, they show that racial prejudice and discrimination in society can condition feelings of inferiority even in young children.
    But researchers are also looking into whether children can be trained early on to reduce their own racial biases. OnePeople.sg chairman Janil Puthucheary tries this solution out on a class of preschoolers.
    0:00 “Which doll is nice? Which doll looks bad?”
    01:29 “Which doll do you want to look like?”
    01:51 How racial bias could be reduced in children

      at the end of the day: they ruined the test. its 2 dolls. no readers.
      2:40 that class is pointless.🙄 she seen 7 skin bleaching commercials, 20,000 pale news journalist, 30,000 actress/actor that are pale skin, and grandparents telling her she should come OUT the sun.
      this is the main reason why the test only use children who cant read yet; they reflect back society.

    When you know people personally, they are no longer stereotyped. Psychology studies show it's easy to be racist if you have no contact with people, eg, posted job applicants. When they handed over the resume / cv face to face and chat, discrimination drops greatly. This child experiment also supports this hypothesis.

      I feel like its more than just "the parents". Sure, they couldve played a factor in this, but sometimes experiences kids go through can affect the way that kid thinks. Like if a kid of color says the whiter doll is beautiful, it could be because of their parents, but it also could be that child experienced racism. I know it affected me before

    I believe this study is incomplete. We recently did a similar study but with more of a background study on the students and children participating. The part about society playing a strong influence remained true; however, family influence also played a major factor. For example (and this is going to be a very general review of just one instance), we had two children of (nearly) the same skin color and race. Interestingly, one of the students had a father that strongly approved of another race to a point that the implication was that that race was superior to their own. Unsurprisingly, that student picked the toy/doll that the father would emphasis was superior. This was not a doll that shared the child's own skin color. The other student also picked another race; however, we came to learn that the father often berated the child and told him/her that he/she was "bad" if they did something unfavorable. We gathered that the child's view of self was negative and had chosen toy/toll of another skin color. This is obviously not complete as well but the point is that there are many different factors that come into play so rather than saying we'll never know why, we should focus on healthy mental development from a young age.

    Interesting video. In Asia especially is discriminating based on skin colour due to racism or elitism - they are different. I have had many 1st hand experiences of certain stereotypes : dark skin = working outside = poor. This is not to do with race - simply elitism.. so many in Asia spend a lot of money on skin whitener - the driver here is predominantly to not look poor. In Thailand for example many want to be whiter skinned - not to be a foreigner - simply a whiter Thai. True example : A Chinese colleague once asked my NZ (white) colleague what his family did for work : Oh my parents are farmers he replied!! Chinese colleague says "oh sorry to hear that" as he visualised them as peasant farmers.. My NZ colleagues parents own a farm maybe a similar size to Changi. 🙃

    Just to add, when they said which dolls' skin color they wish they had, I understood their thoughts and feelings because everybody is insecure and everybody wishes that they had a certain thing about their body. Same as me, I always wanted to be white even though I am black. I cried in front of my family when I was little just because I wanted to be white, that is how bad I wanted to be white. But now, I love my skin color and I would never want to change it for a different skin color!

    I am really surprised that children at this age already have the idea of racism and these are all originated from their parents teaching ~ Once this idea is implanted, how long and how much effort will it take to "wash off" this kind of racist thought ! Children should be like angels who are kind towards everyone without stereotype and racism

    • @teascobie6557
      @teascobie6557 2 роки тому +12

      surprised? Children are extremely intelligent they watch our every move and pick up on verbal and non verbal cues. So, even if parents have not said anything disparaging about another race they may have acted a certain way and their child can read that. This test was originally conducted in 1940 I believe, and the results are the same in 2022. The more things change the more they stay the same.

      @兔兔爱古兔 Lol Chinese people are some of the biggest racist community out there. Analyse the Chinese kids in the beginning they al knew that being '' beige color'' was the ''best thing to be in Singapore''. That why white people are treated by them as angeles. You see the same phycology among alot of Asian people a deep deep insecure and low self image. The Indian boy was the only one who had a postive self image. Just be honest and give in the fact many Chinese people and other East Asians have low self image and teach this to their kids.

    I would love to see similar tests in area's with black kids only, or Asian kids only, or white kids only.
    Not city area's, but relatively remote area's.
    On those locations the kids don't really often see many different kids.
    I mean, if you go to a city you'll see piles of different kids with differend backgrounds, but if you go to area's with a low people density, you'll see white kids who have never seen black kids. Or black kids who have never seen white kids.
    That way the odds of the child already having experience with kids with other skincolors are a lot lower, so they can't really know what such a kid is like.
    Also, I would like to see what they would do it you put a blue, or a green doll in between, would they think it's a smart doll, or dumb, or sick or not a human at all?

    Personally I don’t think the problem is, that children see the race first. That is something we all do….trying to distinguish people from what they look like. And we usually use the names, if we know them afterwards.
    The problem is not that people see the color of the skin, as long as it is as neutral as color of hair or eyes.
    And we should not over interpret: A lot of adults would like to change something at their looks. The whole make up industry and hair color or perm producing industry would not exist otherwise.
    But that doesn’t mean that we all hate ourselves.

  • @tamaracooper5
    @tamaracooper5 6 місяців тому +1

    You know if I'm being honest, I know that they are just children and they don't really understand as much, But I think they should love all skin colors black, white, etc. And I am not saying this as if they were trying to be racist but that's just what I want to get off my chest. I totally understand children like this because I used to be like this too, I don't wanna say that I hated but I guess I just didn't like the black girl dolls so I only liked the white girl dolls. If my mom or grandma bought me a black doll, I would start crying and making a fuss about it, I am black myself so I'm not sure why I thought that way but that's how I felt when I was a little girl.
    But now that I've gotten older, I've noticed how much I've changed and now I love both black dolls and white dolls, really I love all pigments! Every single color in this world is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!

    It is extremely sad to see all these children suffering from such a young age.... in this world and in the human condition of our century, as the global situations are, children can be imoacted and then live in prejudice just at the heard of tiny fractures of meanings, or words, or information. Who knows at the end of the day how the global information that we create as humans, at a world wide level, how it is actually impacting us....?!?? I might even believe that the information is impacting us even if we are not faced directly with the obvious signs... words or face expressions or even being impacted directly.... I think that the global information existent around us.... planetary.... like a layer around us, it is in fact impacting all of us!!!!

    well, god is the one who created these differences isn't it? he first split us between different gender(M/F). then we we want to unite, he split us by changing our language into diff. languages... then skin colour, then race, then culture, then religion. and now covid. Isn't he's the one who created devils too? when serpent(devil) misled eve, he didn't even appreciate her innocence, rather deems her as stupid and so let Adam to take the lead, saying wife(eve) must listen to Adam(male) which created a world of sexism even until today. Life is such a pain, why when we first came out from out mother's womb, the first thing we do is to cry? cry because of discomfort. why? life is such a pain, it's a game that no one has signed up for. We never asked to be created. now, by saying this I'm risking myself. I'm really tired of thinking these. Even hell is created by the creator. We are created by the creator and who created the creator? it just exist? so many things just doesn't make even bloody sense. if one religion is the only real religion, you're telling me that half of the world population with the other religion(s), no mattering how virtuous they live their life, eventually they will end up in hell? you're telling me people born in a particular country are destined to go to hell because that's their major belief in the country? HOW THESE MAKES ANY BLOODY SENSE. im tired! im really pity people that has went to the attempt suicide, indeed, in most of the beliefs I known. they probably end up in hell, im genuinely pity for them. all they wanted is to end their suffering...... who created us? existence which we never asked for and we are created to be slaves..... sounds like a dictatorship....

Having us divided is a distraction. Gender, color, race, all BS all distractions. Children need to learn to read, add, and subract.
