Autism meltdowns are one of the hardest autism traits for me as an autistic person. For a lot of people on the autism spectrum, meltdowns are a common autism trait.
Meltdowns can occur regardless of age but it is mostly talked about with autistic children which could be seen as a tantrum or misbehaviour. For some autistic adults, meltdown may come out as rage or anger but also can result in some self-injurious behaviours.
Autism meltdown triggers can come from sensory overload, feeling overwhelmed and more. But by talking about meltdowns and ways to stop them, you may identify what triggers you have and apply these autism meltdown tips into your own life.
But I hope by talking about autism meltdowns openly and honestly, I hope to help others understand what autistic meltdowns are like and ways to stop meltdowns from happening.

A meltdown also works in three stages. 1. Panic; 2. Rage and 3. Recovery. It's all avoiding stage two of the "Meltdown Cycle".

Meltdowns feels like a true primal state, so honest, I feel like that bit of information is very important when considering how to aproach meltdowns in the first place.

When I have a meltdown, I forget to breathe, because stop the sounds is the most important thing, I stim a lot, hit my ears, my head to make it stop. Thanks to your advices, I will tell people around me to help me concentrate on breathing, inhale and exhale with them. I often forget that family, friends, medical people don't know and want to know how to react, so explain helps them to.

Exactly I don’t have tantrums that’s childish and it seems like people control how angry they want to be when they have tantrums. However when I’m at my boiling point I lose all sense and all I feel is rage. That rage makes me want to hurt things but I know where I’ll end up as a black man in America so I result in harming myself by punching things until I bleed. That pain is how I calm myself down

I remember having a meltdown during my grad. trip in senior high. I was drunk, socializing with a friend and someone else I didn't really like. This other person was being really passive-aggressive, and suddenly there was commotion outside in the hallway.... and I just burst into tears out of nowhere and started shouting that "I don't wanna be here, get me away from here!", etc. My workout buddy (with whom I shared a room, and who had returned just minutes before my meltdown started) just grabbed my arm and pulled me with him out of the room, past those people and back to our room, where he left me alone. This was years before I realized I'm autistic. One of my friends who witnessed this actually brought it up when I mentioned to her that I'm being assessed. It suddenly "made sense" to her. And, thinking about it now, I honestly think my workout buddy handled it in a very good way given the circumstances.

I’ve learned how to prevent these but sometimes there’s nothing I can do, the best thing to do is to go into a dark room without other people and little sensory input. Im so sad that it has taken me so long to realise that my adult daughter is autistic. I had no idea when she was little and I handled it completely wrong for years. She became a person who could become very violent durng a meltdown ( drugs made it worse)This split our family up. She is now pregnant and this weekend she had another meltdown and my other daughter had a huge panic attack ( cecause of what has happened before) . I feel compassion for her but we cant continue to live like this

Great video 👍 it can be good to know that people are different and need different things. You say "don't touch someone having a meltdown", while I really need someone to touch me! I feel that I'm loosing control and I'm panic because of it, if someone physically grab me and take control over me I calm down instantly. So.. we are all different and need different things 🙂

I had a melt down today. The worst I’ve had in awhile. And my husband didn’t understand. But he just let me go through it. It was all over cues that I had missed that led to it. Good advice. Can apply to panic attacks too. When it comes to panic attacks I would say if you know the person, it can be helpful sometimes to put a gentle hand on their shoulder or arm. If in doubt ask first. But that is more for panic attacks.
You can reassure the person you will take care of them. I know when I'm having a panic attack and I'm in a bad state I can have worries like "How am I going to get home in this state?" "How will I bring myself to a safe space?" "How will I keep myself safe if I'm dissociating?" Like if I'm confused, I can easily not notice a car or a dangerous situation. So to have someone verbally say to me "I'm going to take care of you and keep you safe." or something like "I've got you." At least I know I don't have to worry about accidentally putting myself in harm's way or getting lost and stuff like that.

    • @IndieAndy
      @IndieAndy  4 роки тому +4

Those are some great tips especially that last one. Think the top one would be good for panic attacks I think but definitely always ask for sure.
Honestly just having that reassure there is really great!

    • @JadeDragonRaze
      @JadeDragonRaze 4 роки тому +2

@@IndieAndy Definitely! I think if you know someone with anxiety and have seen them have panic attacks, then it's easier to know what to do from instinct.

On my vacation to Ireland I experienced 2 meltdowns, the first was a build up on overwhelming due to the loud noises and sudden situations and the dog barking was the final straw.
The second one is kind of the loud noises aswel since my mom and her cousin's band was very loud recording rock and roll music, and I ended up being in a situation where I just couldn't win, I forgot my plushies and I wanted to stay in their house for the night.
(they bring me comfort and no other plushies that my relative's had gave me the same comfort), and that's how I got into a meltdown.
I was wiggling my legs a lot and I was tearing up and getting emotional, what my mom did is that she asked to tell her about my digital art so I did and talked about it, in one of the drawings it was Little Nightmares related.
So I ended up getting in the topic of Little Nightmares and I eventually calmed down and I could think straight again.
If you where wondering what happened in the end and what we did in that decision then I stayed in the house for long and then went back home with my aunt. (It was night-time so naturally I went to bed and luckily I had my plushies with me.)

Aww thank you very much! I have covered this in other videos about meltdowns on the channel from what I remember.
But just to answer your question here & this is literally what I do. Organising my time and planning out what I'm doing, have a plan B if this doesn't work out. If something happens that is triggering for me, I'll go out and sit down somewhere quiet/out the way. Especially if I'm stressed out I get really hot which makes things worse. I'll put my headphones on and just listen to music if I can as that really helps me personally.
Others things would be to take a fidget/stim aid like a stress ball, tangle. Literally just something(s) that will help you destress.

      Indi by Indy
But an underlying stress is accumulating. Yes I calmed myself at the moment... But there's still a part staying and accumulating until the big breakdown. And the breakdown is not the worse part in it... The in-between is to me the worse when I'm not at the point of breaking down but not calm either.
I'm not saying there's nothing to do, but meltdown can't br avoided... An I prefer to have a meltdown than having stress accumulating and accumulating and accumulating until a big big meltdown that is often far worse than it could be because things accumulated.
I'm not in control of that, so I don't really know the solution (except trying to avoid triggers), but... I disagree. Maybe it's just me but calming myself when triggered can't keep a meltdown happening. Not at that moment but later because of the accumulation. And it's just creating that in-between which consist of anxiety, fears, troubles with attention/focus, stress, Being on nerves, etc. With half my brain being able to work.
So, to me, the solution would be more... How to provoke the meltdown or truly calm myself when triggered and by calm I mean "erase" it, like a meltdown would do. Because what your comment is describing is just making things worse.

Hi! So I recently learned my partner has autism and I’m trying to educate myself more.
If we are in a store, and they have a meltdown, is it okay to ask “would you like to be touched?” and “Do you want to leave to somewhere more calm?” I don’t want to do anything without asking first but I also don’t want to add to that over whelming feeling.

Talk with them about it when things are good, ask them if that's okay bc its different for everyone, some questions help me while some make things worse, same goes for pretty much everything, ask the specific person in your life if specific things would be good/bad in different situations

I don't know how he thinks about it but I would love a "come we go to a calmer place" instead of a question that requires a decision ...and then it's ok to ask if he wants to hold hands or something because maybe that can help to find the 'way out' because you lose orientation easily during meltdowns..ask him too what he wants ! But so cool that you try to learn about this!!!
Edit : I just decided I like the question style too in fact I just have to nod to this and I'm out too😅 it's very considerate of you

I subscribed to your channel just now. I enjoyed watching your video as an ASD person and am interested in how you cope with different issues. I will watch all your videos and maybe that will answer my question I'm posting here. I know autism is different for men than for women but I think your videos may be able to help me. Can you tell me what you do in the recovery time? I get so disappointed, depressed and feel awful during that time. I try so hard to be patient with myself because I lose who I am and don't feel like I did before the meltdown. My recovery time is aimless and I like to work on projects but I can't. I am incapable of doing anything and I mean ANYTHING. My meltdowns scatter my brain too and chaotic mind altering crap happens to me because of the meltdown. I don't like being touched as it is, but when I have a meltdown, I'm like a cornered cat only because I'm scared of what's happening to me. I recently had a meltdown and yesterday I searched all over the web for what to do once I have one in the recovery time but no one seems to have this out there yet. If you know of an outlet I haven't searched yet that can help me with this, please feel free to share and email me. After my search was a bust, I ended up reading a book, which is good because my breathing centered me while reading and the story pulled me out of (as you said...to focus on something else) concentrating on the fact I couldn't function as I wanted to. But it took me 5 hours to be able to function enough to sit and read and enjoy something at all. Any suggestions you may have IndiAndy would be much appreciated. I'm an introvert and don't like to put my stuff out there. I searched for a different way I could contact you about this so this will have to do. My recovery time is really scary and I've experienced lows I wouldn't wish on anyone. I know meltdowns are unique to the individual so maybe there is a portion of what someone else on the spectrum experiences that can help me not be so scared, depressed and feeling so down right hopeless during recovery time. Thank you. I like your channel. Have a great day.

My meltdowns are like slow, seething tsunamis. My meltdowns usually go in five stages:
    1. Inconvenience, denial and ignorance (am I having a meltdown, dont know dont care)
    2. Realization (well Im having a meltdown now)
    3. Rage and panic (OHMYGODSTOP/ICANTEVENHEARMYOWNTHOUGHTS/AAAAAAAHHH)
    4. Bargaining and melancholy (anything to make this stop/nobody is going to care)
    5. Recovery (oh, someone actually did care, well that's over) or violence (ANYONEINFRONTOFMEISF****NDEAD)
Thankfully I usually recover, and violence usually happens when Im alone and there is nobody who can be hurt, I punch the wall, or my bed, or a pillow, or similar.

I am Autistic, my psychiatrists and my psychologists disagree on my support level 2. I live in a place in Latin America where women are very prone on hitting men and even falsely accusing men of crimes just for facing any form of opposition/non-compliance. My worst meltdowns come in these contexts and the social result is that society and public/policial authorities believe then even if I have situations recorded on video and never threatened nor physically hurt anyone.

It depends on the situation. Obviously I'm just suggesting based on what helps me and from what I've seen of others on the spectrum like friends etc.
If they are hurting themselves, that's different and if appropriate you can intervene. So some suggestions of mine would be moving them away from the thing they are getting distressed over. I wouldn't suggest physical restraints at all as it does more harm than good.
Beyond that I'm not sure to be perfectly truthful.
