Wow someone that actually sets the drag correctly
haha thanks sand 🤙
Why not reel backwards
@@Master15846I mean it’s 2023, why bother? Using a properly set drag is much easier and really no chance to make a mistake
How do you know if the drag is set correctly
@@calebcampos173 fr on 8 lb his drag should be wayyyyy looser
Nice bass Pete! Love seeing the big ones caught during the day!
Thanks Justin! It was a real treat to get a chance at these big girls locally. It’s true, you don’t see the big ones feeding as much during the day compared to night, hope you get on them too this spring/summer!
During the day? Man that's 8 or 9am lol
I caught one smaller than that on normal tackle and it was hard. You need an award
Haha thanks, it was a small miracle I landed this fish
That's the thickest 8lb test I've ever seen 😅
hahaha, its amazing how strong braided line can be
@@PeterRanieriIIexactly lol has to awitch to mono again on my light reels bc the braid is way too strong .
@@PeterRanieriII its also crazy how junk it can be at the same time. I broke my 20lb braid today on a carp after the fight. Got to shoreline and it snapped ..... where I was, wouldnt guess it to be anything over 10lb ..... is what it is though, I know where Im going next time, to try again lol
@@SeaMonkeyChromedid you horse it?
Best I ever did light line was 2lb test ice fishing for crappy caught a 9 lb tiger musky 45 minutes .
wow a musky on 2lb line! you played that fish very well, couldnt have been easy through the ice either, well done!
The luxury of quality tackle!
Makes a huge difference!
Awesome fish! I always watch your videos when they pop up and they are magnificent. Keep up the good work and good luck fishing, even though you don’t need luck, you have some major skill
why thank you! i appreciate the positive motivation to keep making them!
I like this guy he really knows how to fight a fish properly 🤙
Geeking out! What a fish!
Haha I was! Thanks man 🤙 just thankful it all worked out
respect on that release. epic catch
Gotta be some kind of light tackle record 🤯
Dang! Nice fish, keep it up!
Thank you !
That was awesome
Bad ass man great work 🎉
Thanks man, this was just one of those days that you dream about, haha
Beauty of a species. Caught my first Wiper last year in CO for my Master Angler 🎣🫡
They really are a beautiful species, nice! 🤙
Awesome hit
Nice catch they usually fight to death! Good to keep those
thanks! yea thats true sometimes they do but here in New York there's actually a slot limit for keepers. They have to be between 28" and 35" to keep and this one was well over that
@@PeterRanieriIINY suk balls mang
Why keep it?
Great fish care!
That was insane
I was shocked myself that I landed it, thanks 🙏
Amazing job!!!
Thank you!!
Wow. Just wow
Nice Fish!
Thanks!
Geez that was a good one 🎉
it really was 🙏
Absolutely stunning fish. Well done sir.
Thanks William! She was a beauty
That is awesome!!
It was and I am grateful for the experience!
Wow that’s a dream fish!
it really was!
Gotta love Daiwa ATD drag❤
its incredible
It was smart to use your drag there.
Have to when using light tackle 👍
New to fishing. Did you have the drag set lighter until it tired out and you could reel it in without it pulling the drag?
@@benhiltz2566 yes thats basically how it works. you want just enough drag to be able to pump it but when the fish takes a run it will let line out, eventually they wont run anymore bc they are so tired and you can reel it in. BUT you dont really want to tire them out too much if you plan to release bc it does take time for a fish to revive after a long fight.
Nice one
Thanks
Very impressive
Good catch
You tagged her sweet
Whats the tag for?
Yeah what’s the tag for
Damn son güd catch
Holy shit 😳 🎉
i was quite shocked as well
Peter, still in envy of this catch. I went out the next morning launching from West Neck and went all the way over to your neck of the water, well over 6 miles, and was skunked other than a few robins😬
Haha it’s totally possible those fish were there for just a few days and then kept moving on. But now you know where I’ll be searching this year, maybe I’ll see you out there! Thanks Ray, you going to the fishing show Saturday?
@@PeterRanieriII Ward Melville? Was giving it some thought
Yea, it was pretty good last year - they have that fishing video game with the actual rod my son loved it
@@PeterRanieriII Yep looks like Lenny, another hard core from Centerport and me will be driving together. Probably get there when doors open.
@@PeterRanieriII Maybe I’ll wear my Cabo shirt and a blue All American Lacrosse 🧢

Smart to let her run. Nice catch nice work!
thanks, oh yea the big ones you have to let them do their thing!
Wow good fight right there
she gave me an epic fight indeed!
Amazing
Just thankful I was able to land it!
I use jerk shad for largemouth in Freshwater and it slays nice fish love the kayak my g
its one of the best all around lures for sure! ty
@@PeterRanieriII no problem love to see fisherman that are actually nice! A lot of the fishing community either keeps under sized or over sized fish or is very rude you got my respect and subscribed keep catching them man 🔥🔥
Didn't know bass can get that big. Fucking huge
lol yeah and they get even bigger than this!
That's a giant man😮
thanks! It really was
8lb j braid and 15lb or 20lb seaguar fluro is my go to inshore set up
Nice, I've heard good things about j braid - need to try it out. I use berkley x9 currently but always like trying new stuff.
@@PeterRanieriII x9 is great but it slices the hell out of my fingers tying knots if I’m in a rush to get back in the water after being broke off LoL
Dang good job bro
Thanks!
@@PeterRanieriII np!
Biggest striper ive caught was 40" idky but they are the hardest fish to get movin again when you release them
40" is a good sized fish! yeah they dont have much stamina I think so once they expend a couple good runs on you they are spent and it takes some time for them to recover
Bro!…. That’s not a bass!
That’s a damn tank! 😂😂😂😂
I caught a 70 pound ray on 30 lb line
Nice fish dude
Thanks 🤙
nice fish! what does the tag do?
Thanks! It just essentially puts a tag ID on the fish so if it’s caught in the future the catch data could be entered and it’s growth and migration can be compared to the day I caught it
I caught a 44" red drum on top water in The St. Johns River on 10 pound braid. I always had to guess the weight. I guessed 34 pounds... Your clip makes me think my guess is pretty close.
Thats awesome Francus! Heck yea I think they were probably very similar sized fish then, what a fight that must have been though because I'm pretty sure reds fight better than stripers.
@@PeterRanieriII
I've caught a few strippers up to 10 pounds and thousands of reds..... They are very close in power. Personally I like fish under 6 pounds. Big fish hurt my arms, stress my tackle, bend hooks, brake me off and and after the hit become a boring task. But.... because of where I was .... on the edge of the deep river instead of the feeder creeks that I usually fish..... and because it was 3 AM .... and a top water lure... etc... I had no clue what I had. I thought it was a dolphin.... like the mammal.. Finally, after 20 minutes (I'm guessing) I saw the tail briefly and it saw me too and RAN. I still wasn't sure. I had never caught red over 12... or any fish over 12 pounds. So I didn't have a clue. A few more runs and she quit. Then my surprise.... a bull red. Bent my net getting her into the Hobie Compass ! ! ! I'm usually targeting spotted sea trout. I catch reds and jack cravalle on accident. This was a neat surprise. I hope it never happens again. It became work. I absolutely LOVE sea trout fishing. Everything else is an interruption. I know people think highly about reds. Not me. They have big fat lips that the hook never comes out of. They're basically a tourist fish. Strippers??? I think of them much more like a sea trout when under 7 pounds and enjoy catching them too. I would catch "hybrid" strippers in The Cape Fear River in Wilmington N.C. I know that was a lot..... Hope it wasn't too boring... like a 20 minute red fight ha ha ha.
@@PeterRanieriII
I just watched your.... "two weak fish" on one hook clip.
That's the type of fishing I LOVE. One after the other on artificial. BTW way.... Yes, the meat is soft. But trout and weak fish are top table fare. They are NOT like a blue fish. They're actually my favorite. Red drum are firm and are top fare too. I prefer trout. They're white, flakey and have ZERO fishy taste. They can be a little bit tedious to clean because they have thin skin. My first job was cutting fish in a fish restaurant. So I can filet anything. If you like to eat fish.... Try those weak fish. I think they'll surprise you.
I watch a lot of guys fishing in UA-cam that NEED help. You don't. You use quality tackle. Effective tackle. You don't waste time with gimmicks and wives tails. Your clips are edited nicely.... I couldn't give you a single piece of constructive advice.... and I KNOW A LOT. You do too. Great fishing. I'll be watching MUCH more of your clips. Especially if you get into those weak fish again.
Thanks
@@francus7227 hahah not boring at all. Thats a great story about that fish and I can relate. Fish like that catch you off guard but oh how memorable it is! Love that you also fish on the hobie compass too! This made me want to do some fishing in your area man, anyways till the next one! 🤙
same man a hot bite on artificial cant be beat. I do think speckled trout taste better than weakfish as weakfish are surprisingly not in the same family as the speckled sea trout. But I will follow your advice and try one again sometime. They were near the brink of extinction (or so we thought) up by me the past 15 years or so and are only recently making a comeback so I do want to be respectful of how many I harvest. hahaha that is one of the best compliments I've received and greatly appreciate it! Im sure you can relate but fishing is a passion and that makes it all the easier to do this because I love it...but every time I go out there I learn something it seems, thats also why i love it as well as you can never fully master it and it always presents new challenges/puzzles to figure out!
Good gfish
Sportsmanship and skill..non existent these times.
Nice.
What body of water are you fishing in?
This is in a bay in the western Long Island, NY area
I don’t feel like the general public should be able to tag fish , but maybe I’m misunderstanding the way the tags work or what they are used for. It seems very hard to regulate and like it would take a lot of the mystery/thrill of fishing away. Would love an elaboration on the subject. Either way awesome catch, love the use of light line for big fish.
I also felt a little surprised the general public could tag a fish when I looked into it. Honestly I was a bit apprehensive at first because I didn't know how and only saw it done a few times on some billfish before but the reality of it is that they need a lot more people to tag in order to get more data. These tags are the basic ones that need to be retrieved and recorded by a future angler that catches the same fish. It cant actually track the fish in real time. But if the future catch is recorded, they can better understand the fish's growth and migration over that time period. Its not a perfect system by any means but I do think its helpful for scientists to have more data. Just want to see these fish around for generations to come ya know...anyways thanks!
Holy lord !!!!!!God is good !!!!!!!
What rod, reel, and line are you using?
Rod is a shimano teremar southeast 6’-6” medium power and the reel is a daiwa kage 2000. Using 8lb Berkeley x9 braid to 20lb yozuri hybrid leader
How do you like your peddle kayak? Debating that or a johnboat. Thanks!
I love this kayak, I personally prefer it to a John boat but I think it depends on your area. If you need to travel far to get to your spots then a John boat might be better. Also, launch access is easier for me to just take it down to the beach and go or car top it and go anywhere I can park. A johnboat needs a trailer and boat launch
Are the finer lines on the fish finder marking your jerk shad
not in this clip, those are prob just small fish or debris. my lure was is front of my boat so it would show on the fish finder in this scenario. that being said I have seen it in other instances, and yes it is a smaller line
Why did you poke a hole in it and add a green thing what does it do
its a research tag, its just a basic ID# so that if the fish is re caught the angler can record the catch data like size and location and enter it online. It’ll help scientist understand growth and migration a little better. Still a long shot but I think it’s worth trying
I'm new to fishing, what is that thing you put in the fish at the end?
That’s a research tag, the hope is someone else catches the fish and we can compared the catch data of the same fish to better understand the species as a whole
Where do you get the tags?
grayfishtagresearch.org/order-tag-kits/ (smaller species kit) They're not cheap but its fun if your interested I def recommend!
What reel is that. Great catch btw
Thanks man, that’s a daiwa kage lt 2000 size
What rod is that? St.Croix Triumph inshore? I just picked one up and snapped it on my second striper, both were only 31” but the second decided it wanted to cause me some troubles… it’s a 7’ MHF, yours looks similar and clearly withstands much larger fish. Wondering if I got a defect or if it’s the wrong rod for the job?
This rod is a shimano teremar southeast. I think its a 6'6" medium power extra fast action but I modified it by cutting the last eye at the tip which gives it a bit more bend in the middle and stiffer tip for jigging. I also have a st croix trumph inshore on another setup though and its lasted me 8 years and still going so maybe your was just a lemon or it just bent the wrong way when the fish turned weird. I think thats a good rod for the job honestly, just make sure the drag is set good and you let the fish run when it wants to
Hey call st croix they will replace your rod no ? Asked. I had 2 bassX rods that broke.
They replaced them with 2 mojos. Great warranty with st croix
Hey Pete, are you able to GPS track the fish with that tagging system?
I wish but nah, its just a serial number tag so someone has to have to knowledge to cut the tag or take down the number and enter the catch info online at greyfishtagresearch.org - its a longshot...
@@PeterRanieriII I had the idea about tagging fish to track them. It would be sooooo much fun. Then, I came to understand the technological difficulties. Oh well.....
@@FinancialFreebo lol yeah that would be so cool to track them in real time even, maybe one day…I think it costs thousand of dollars for a gps tracker today and don’t think it’s in real-time either
@@PeterRanieriII I have been told that the big problem is that GPS tracking doesn't work under water. Then, sonar technology ONLY works under water... dangit...
@@FinancialFreebo I think that’s true, the fish would have to surface or come really close to the surface to ping.
What’s the green tube that he inserted into the fish for?
its just a research tag that may help in tracking the fish's growth, migration, etc..it has to be re-caught and the catch data entered online
Good job is the green thing like a tracker or what is it
thanks, the green thing is a tag. It has a serial number on it so someone would need to catch the fish again and input the catch data with the number into the greyfishtagresearch.org website. then we could see how far it traveled and how much bigger it got. A total long shot but hey, you never know!
Gray with an a.
🤔
I’m new to fishing. Could anybody explain how/when you decide to let your “drag” run. If that’s the right phrasing. Basically letting the fish take line.
You want it set below the breaking strength of your line. If it’s a big fish and they start running and you have it set too tight then they could pull so hard it breaks the line. After some experience you’ll get the hang of it on when you should because you can tell when you have a larger fish and when they are about to make a run
@@PeterRanieriII Thanks! So it’s kind of a way to let the line go out rather than snapping. Gotcha.
Braided line over mono any day
Is it braid that's the same diameter of 8 pound mono or is it actually 8 pound braided? Looks really thick
It’s 8lb braid
@PeterRanieriII Dang must be that stark color that makes it stand out then
What's the little green thingy u stuck innit
thats a serial ID tag so that if the fish is re-caught it can be recorded with the catch data and compared to the data I input when I tagged it. It could help scientists track the growth and migration of the fish and better understand the species as a whole
What’s the thing you stuck in the fish I am a new fisher 😂
Hey 👋 that’s a tag that could help scientists track the growth and migration of the fish. But someone else has to catch the same fish and record the tag with the fish’s size and location so it’s easier said then done. But would be cool if it works out!
Thanks
What’s that gadget you are using to see the levels and heat waves
I think you are referring to the fish finder which is just essentially a sonar graph. It sends out an ultrasound signal to the bottom which bounces off objects and returns to the device which can then be charted to make a picture of objects under the boat. So what you're seeing is the bottom contour and any fish swimming under the boat
@@PeterRanieriII nice! I’m new to the fishing scene so everything is practically new to me
What kayak model do you have? And what mods did you install?
It’s a hobie compass 2021, here’s a playlist to all the mods Ive done: ua-cam.com/play/PLZsVnWkyzKlnj8VwDjXEqIz7KCZxgM5_o.html
What equipment is that on the garmin
The rod set up as well
The garmin is a 74sv, the rod is a shimano teremar southeast 6’-6” medium xfast that I cut the last eye off, the reel is a daiwa kage 2000
@@PeterRanieriII may I ask why you cut rhe last eye off ?
@@InfamousKiddXD it’s a good question - it allows me to fish heavier jigheads since the tip now flexes less. The rod bends closer to the middle now too yet still is sensitive and lightweight
Where is this? Virginia?
This is in Long Island, NY
How do u get the spool not to tangle
the line on the spool shouldn't tangle, unless your reeling through the drag which can cause the line to twist it should lay on the spool no issues
Is there a reason you did not put the jig all the way into the plastic ?
Great question. I just need to make sure the soft plastic is straight. If when I thread on the soft plastic on it’s a little short I just leave it bc it’ll still work and swim perfectly. What’s worse is if it’s threaded on too much and curls slightly bc of the hook.
@@PeterRanieriII
Alright I understand 👍🏻
Is there a tactic to how the lure is rigged because it looks as good g the lure isn’t seated right up to the jighead?
Honestly the first time I left it like this was laziness but I found it didn’t make any difference, the key is making sure the soft plastic sits perfectly straight so that the action is correct, that’s what matters I think
What kind of fish finder you running
It’s a garmin 74sv
Wats that green thing you put on it and why ?
That’s a research tag. It can help scientists learn more about the species growth rate and migration patterns if someone else is able to catch the fish and record the data 👍
What did you stick on the bass?
that was a research tag - its just a serial # so it can be recaught and the catch data can be compared to when I caught it
What did he put in the bass at the end
thats a research tag - the hope to for someone to catch the same fish and record the size, weight, location, etc. and compare the data to help scientists

What’s the green tag for
thats a serial ID tag so that if the fish is re-caught it can be recorded with the catch data and compared to the data I input when I tagged it. It could help scientists track the growth and migration of the fish and better understand the species as a whole
Do you have to be moving for the sonar to work?
You do not actually, you can get a stationary picture of the bottom. The sonar is constantly sending a signal out and receiving the return regardless if your moving or not

What’s the green line he stuck in the fish for?
its a research tag (serial #). It could help scientists get more data on the species if the next person catches the fish and enters the catch data for comparison
@@PeterRanieriII catch data does what exactly?
@@ChowTY42 for example I recorded this fish’s length, weight, location, date, lure. If say someone else catches the same fish a year from now, they record the same data and then we can see how much it grew since then, where it migrated to, what it may have been feeding on. It’s basically just more info for them to make decisions on how to protect/regulate the species
That was hot AF 💙
What was straw looking thing you stab him with??
that was a research tag, if someone catches the fish again they can input the growth and migration data which can help scientists learn more about the species.
Should use some heavier tackle if you’re targeting striped bass.. no reason to risk tiring it out to death if you plan on releasing
100% agree. I didnt expect to catch one this size. normally they are half this size around where I fish

It’s an S&S big eye jig head. Here’s a link: tacklecenter.net/products/s-s-bucktails?variant=39531741577286
what's the tag for?
basically we are trying to get more information on the fish so that scientists can make better informed decisions on how to manage the species or set regulations. Why did u poke it and why are all of a sudden stripped bass are showing up never heard of the just a few years ago
I put a tag in the fish to help track some of its data like growth and migration. If someone else catches this fish they can record the difference in size and location which could help scientists better understand and regulate the species. Not sure why it seems they are more popular recently, likely that’s a factor of social media

It’s a daiwa kage 2000
Does that fish taste good?
not my favorite to be honest. the smaller ones are decent eating, but when they get this big the meat isn't the same

Its a research tag. The hope is to be able to get some data on the fish if its caught again in the future to help scientists better understand growth and migration patterns.
