Funk bass perfection! Mr. Mark strategically placed his signature slides, trills, pops and runs while taking NOTHING away from the main groove! He DRIVES the song. Nothing like that classic STELLAR FUNGK! RIP.
I grew up with Larry Graham, Bootsy Collins, Louis Johnson and Verdine White, but I have to admit that it was Mark Adams, Aaron Mills and Marvin Craig that led us all down the path of Funk Bass. Excellent video, Bro. Thanks for reminding us that Mark Adams was a STRAIGHT BEAST on bass and did what all the other bass players did not.
I love it because repetitive bass sticks & stays in your soul & you never forget it! The Victor Wootens, Marcus Miller etc are awesome but who remembers or goes around humming their songs because you 'always' hum the bass part of a song when asked how it goes...😎
For sure mark adam Aaron mills and Marvin drove a lot of people to bass, in my case they still do, I went as far to build a replica jazz bass to Mark Adam with the 3 pickups

LexxKelsey, you are right! I think Sandy Anderson RIP, was closest when using Mark Adams style on the song "Inside Out." I was able to chat with Sandy on FB before he passed. He actually wrote a song for Slave and sat in on some of their recording sessions. I also was lucky to chat with Steve Washington (fearless leader of Slave). Steve Washington had a lot to do with Mark Adams bass sound and effects.
One of my earliest bass influences I had a deep appreciation for his baselines when I first heard slide as a teenager I had to know who was on bass and I've been a fan ever since
This was one of my favorite songs as a little girl. I never understood why but it was the bass and Steve Arrington's. This iso is making me appreciate it more. The funny thing is i noticed all these variations with the music mixed in. That bass is the star of the show.
Oh, wow. Something I've always wanted for Christmas: a Mark Adam's (my idol) isolation track...from one of my favorite Slave songs no less! Thanks for the video!
It was Great to see your reaction listening to the isolated Bass track Mr. DeLuca. I'm one of those Old School gentleman that grew up on Slave, and I would have the headphones on listening to this Bass Line.
Yep! I'm an original funkateer, the One giveth ...this has been one of my favourite bass lines and bass players.I played this baseline live at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London as part of my solo, and the house went Kray Zeee!! great reaction. Thanks, Mark.
Where did he get the bass line for The Way You Love Is Heaven ? That was ahead of its time european type Funk I was stationed in Germany we used SLAVE to test our stereo speakers we all had badass stereos I had some Sansui 7500 12" bass speakers, Kenwood Amp 100 wats per channel. Mark Adams was only 16 years old when he help formed the band Slave and he is my all time favorite bass player. His style and sound is like no other. I hate I never got a chance to see them play live. My older brothers taught me how to spend records and enjoy listening to greats bands like Slave. Keep Living Keep Keep Giving
I Was Very Fortunate To Have Mark Adams On My Funk Track. The "Cold Funk House Jam" On The Track Was Mose Davis From Hamilton Bohannon, Jimmy Brown From Brick And Mark Adams From Slave! Recorded In 1992. Unreleased.
I stumbled on your reaction analysis and I think it's spot on. I too have been a Slave fan from the very beginning and Just A Touch Of Love is on my current music playlist. As a bass player like yourself, I've studied Mark Adams's bass style. After all of these years of listening to Slave, I have always wondered what bass did he use to get that sound that he got on Visions Of The Light, Bad Enuff, and the New Plateau albums? Those are perfect examples of the tone that I'm hearing. I'm not talking about studio recording or playing technique here. I'm talking about the instrument itself. I'm know the sound of a Jazz Bass with round wound strings and there are photos of him with an Alembic Series I. I play both of these basses and I'm familiar with their tones. I've seen photos of him with modified Jazz Basses, presumably with active electronics. There's one black three pickup Jazz Bass shaped bass I've seen in photos and on album covers. I suspect that bass was what he used on those albums. The tone sounds like something that might be achieved by using that middle pickup along with the other two pickups. I reached out to Mark back in the day through their record company, but to no surprise, I didn't get a response. I've looked online and I'm unable to find any detailed information about recording these albums and what basses he used. Perhaps you or someone you know can shed some light on this burning question or other places I can look for an answer. In the meantime, I'll keep listening and wondering. Thanks again for your iso analysis of one of my favorite bass players!
I would play air bass with almost every Slave jam, & people who actually play bass would say. " Oh you play bass "? Unfortunately no. Damn. But if I did guess who I'd remind you of ? Anyway what I love most about Mark Adams is he's hard, funky, smooth, etc. But his ad-libs are what really resignates for me. You know I love this video💯

You are spot on my brother he's digging in those strings as a bass player myself Mark influenced me at 14 in 1977 yrs old with Slide his tone is Unmatched his plucking 2 strings at once also his signature
If it Weren't for Louis Johnson and Mr. Mark "Master of Scat Bass" Adams and Larry Graham, I NEVER Would have Picked Up a Bass Way Back in 1975, Thank You My Brother. @DeLuca Bass
Hey! I love Verdine as well. Also Mr. Jamerson, the father of the electric bass. Mark resembled him, in that he was always avoiding repeating himself, which was a big strength (among many) for Jamerson. I heard Jamerson in grade school but didn't know it was Jamerson. In high school I saw a "Rock" festival on ABC in '74? called California Jam, and they had this black group called Earth, Wind & Fire... I saw Verdine and he messed up this white boy in a really great way! I went out and bought their album. In college, my first African American friends introduced me to Slide. That still is probably the most perfectly badass bass line ever. And remember, these guys were extremely radical at the time, along with Funkadelic/Parliament with their screaming Jimi guitars. Black music was pretty redneck conservative at the time, stubbornly insisting the guitar should be a plink-a-dink, or a chick-a-wacka at most. These guys tore all that down, basically saying, "Jimi was here. Deal with it." I was so lucky to be introduced to Slave.
@mmckee58 that show with ewf was called In Concert on ABC 7. I spent my early years of my life living just a mile from Maurice white and Verdine Adam's Jr. The entire Westside of Chicago was waiting for that show.
@@ShadowsofSmoke I knew Verdine was an Adams before he changed his name to White but never thought about two of my favorite bass players of all time have the last name Adams.

The Concept and The Stone Jam albums should be in the Funk Hall of Fame...Now here's the thing this track went into crossover radio but yet Slave were able to keep and maintain their identity ..I also was huge fan of the track " Snap Shot"...Let's also remember when he did this track it wasn't a Fender..it was a StarGuitars 3 single coiled Jazz Bass..I know you have shows him playing a Fender but that was well after this album and as I've told people Mark Adams was on the Radio waves well before Mr. Miller..Also he's playing this track without any looping because that's how it was back in the day..
Slide was one of the first things that I learned how to play in junior high I started out on the violin then got the upright bass being the biggest nerd in orchestra then a few of us went electric after seeing Joan jett live now there's dozens of all female metal bands in japan and all of the bass players are killers along with the drummers and guitarists!
Still one of the baddest bass players I’ve ever heard. Not in terms of distortion, crazy sound, etc…but in terms of heaviness, Adams is quite possibly one of the heaviest bass players I’ve ever heard. The presence and raw ruggedness of his playing hits you HARD. In that time period, everyone was going for a super polished bass tone…and here’s Mark with a hard sound, almost like you’d think he’s playing for a heavy metal band. There’s a reason they say “Mark Adams - Lead Bass”. Party Lights is still one of my top bangers Mark making channel poster look about to cry over his playing LOL. I’m right there with you man!
Mark Adams was and still is the man on bass. He was a teenager when they recorded the timeless classic Slide and Slave's debut album. It can't be duplicated. Matter of fact everyone in Slave then were teenagers except the drummer Tim Dozier.
GREAT!! Any bass video from Slave is always a great listen and watch! "Watching you" by Slave would also be great. Recently, I've become interested in acquiring a violin "Beatle" bass because I'd love to try its "lightness" out Do you have one? IF SO, can you do a video on it - or them? Any bass video from Slave is always fun!! Do some B.T. Express too.
He once said" I add verdine white with The guy from grand funk railroad with Larry Graham to form my style".... Someone please help me with the other guy name from GFR .

In that time period, everyone was going for a super polished bass tone…and here’s Mark with a hard sound, almost like you’d think he’s playing for a heavy metal band. There’s a reason they say “Mark Adams - Lead Bass”. Party Lights is still one of my top bangers
Mark making channel poster look about to cry over his playing LOL. I’m right there with you man!
Mark Adams was and still is the man on bass. He was a teenager when they recorded the timeless classic Slide and Slave's debut album. It can't be duplicated. Matter of fact everyone in Slave then were teenagers except the drummer Tim Dozier.
Please ISO Smokin' from Showtime. The Hansolor!
His Jazz bass had 3 pickups
He went to work 💯🎸
He once said" I add verdine white with
The guy from grand funk railroad with
