“DP, just delete your browsing history because it means down pipe”. 😂😂😂😂. Dude I’m sure it went over most but that was funny
Kevin, you're amazing man! Thank you for the time and effort you put in to keep us up to date on products and also topics to keep our B58s running well. Keep up the great work!
thanks for the support
Thankyou for taking the time to help other b58 owners
Never stop these informative vids please 🙏
sir yes sir
You do a great job for us b58 guys, thanks bro!
*hits like and comments before even watching video bc the boi deserves it*
Kern the B58 king!
Thanks for this.
Much appreciated for the b48/58 community. Me being apart of the former lol.
glad to help. a lot of the topics translate across platforms.
Thanks for sharing kern.
The B58 GOAT strikes again
Question ????
Oil capacity in 2022 m240 xdrive? One bmw dealership said 6.5 liters and the other said 7.2 liters?
Can’t find it in the manual. Forums go back and forth. Awd oil pans use 7.2 correct? B58B3001 all-wheel drive 7.2?????
Quality as always brother
Any information on the oil pump housing assemblies in the b58tus being plastic and failing in both the 40 series and supras. Any data out there that shows exactly when BMW decided to stop using the plastic and switch to metal? Based off a build date etc
Curious as well
adding it to the list
Fr
truly b58 goat❤
Something to note: the 2-port Gen 2 B58 (B58TU) ONLY comes in a 2020 model year A90 Supra. The only difference is the 2-port turbo manifold has a different compression ratio than the 6-port.
It Also comes in theX5, X7, 740i etc
@@kern417 oops I lied :(
you *learned* that's what we're here for
2020 m340i would have the 6 port b58tu?
Yes
The gen3 B58 is now in the new LCI G05 X5 as well!!!
I need to cover this soon 📝
Hell yea. I love my 440i GC
I’m looking into getting one soon idk what year would be best
you have the custom plate i wanted, i live in canada tho so i can probably have it still but now idk lol
Bro can you explain how the new electronically vanos system works
I have a whole video on vanos. You're looking for something specific to evanos?
AC Schnitzer also made a 30th anniversary ACL2S package for F22 M240i with 30 cars limited (claimed) and that is one rare B58 as well but only in Europe :(
Great vid hoomie. As a video idea what do you think of pro tool and it’s capability as a ISTA for dummies. Maybe a good video series to get into?
I don't have one but maybe in the future
Hey @kern417 - Can you do a video breakdown of what it would take to change out an oil pump? We have been seeing some issues with the early TU and having a plastic internal oil pump. Thanks :-)
yes
I get asked atleast once a week if my 40i is a 4.0 litre 😂.
Awesome video 👌🏽
Hey kern, i recently tuned my gen 2 b58 (m240i) and I went from using the factory 0w-20 and now use 5w-40. Do you recommend going back to 0w-20 or should I go to 0w-30? I only went higher because my local mechanic recommended it.
Thank you!! I love learning about my car and new information on it. I have a 2023 M240i, have you heard anything on when the car will be cracked for a tune beyond sending to Femto?
Unfortunately no. I was hopeful it would happen sometime last year but we're still waiting.
Realistically speaking. How long should an engine break in be on a new B58 with city driving?
Got the same question
1000 miles
i did 500
@@kern417 that’s what I was thinking, I’m doing 500/500 for clutch and engine on my mt Supra. I can’t think of any component that would need longer than that with city driving
2000 km is what I did, just to be sure! Unless you plan on selling it with 5000 km, it is worth the wait!
One question I always had was what effect switching back and forth between sport and comfort can do to the car? Especially with mppsk, sport mode and all the burbles and unburnt fuel, especially if you switch back and forth a lot on a drive, is that bad for the car? Or even letting off gas with high revs and burbles?
Doesn't matter
W video Kevin thank you sir
Is supra using the gen1 b58?
I have heard horror stories of broken turbo pieces flying through the intake manifold and into the engine. Is there a way to prevent that?
Does the type of intake you have affect this ?
that's not really an issue
I need help for my car, I recently hit a pot hole and it ended up having my tire rub against my strut which is causing a scratching sound. BMW wants 6k to repair the strut, axle, and shocks which is insane. It would be great if you can help me with this problem
I'm not sure how I can help you. If you damaged your car then go through insurance to get it fixed.
Just picked up a 2020 440i looking for a road trip car so don't want to go too crazy and ruin mpg at cruising speed but want to be more aggressive than stock. It isn't m-sport. I am thinking intake, charge pipe, high flow catted downpipe, tune, stuck in a 91 octane only area.
all you need is a tune, you can add a downpipe for a little more noise and quicker spool.
@@kern417 great thanks
Big Kern what do you think is holding back the s55 guys from getting into the 8s obviously we just seen a b58 in a bmw break into them not to long ago
nobody is committed
Question as I couldn't find any info on it online, is the m performance LSD available only for auto or manual or is it universal? looking at making the purchase but couldn't find anything to solidify the lead.
P.S. Thanks Kern the knowledge is always appreciated
Two different units
Automatic is 2,81 ratio and manual 3.08 so two different differential.
@@AGM240i They likely install just fine into either, and ratio would be the only difference. I swapped my 3.08 stock diff for a 3.46 Wavetrac unit, and the electronics get a little mad at me but it's very easy to work around. If you don't mind the longer ratio, you can more-than-likely put an auto unit in a stick car.
@@porschelover04 yes you can, but he ask for M performance lsd and there are just two option 2.81 for automatic and 3.08 for manual.
@@AGM240i I'm aware, I'm just saying that my experience with changing a 3.08 to a 3.46 with minimal issue probably means that a 3.08 -> 2.81 swap will be just fine. However, I wouldn't say that with confidence about an automatic transmission car. The TCU can be finicky.
are there any official sources for production numbers on the F series?
Kevin, the stiffness of the suspension is the same on Sport and Sport+? I know the shifting is different if you are tuned with xHP Flashtool but I’m wondering about the shock absorbers as in my case that i have the electronic ones... i feel the difference with comfort and Sport but not sure about Sport and Sport+
Sport and sport + are the same
@@kern417 thanks Kevin! 👍🏻
Im pretty sport plus is just there for launch control basically
I’d argue individual cars will pull a premium…
Do you think the post june 2020 will ever be unlocked without femto? Is so when do you think, thanks.
Yes, but not sure when
I own a 2018 ZHP 340i with 23k miles black exterior and red interior. Automatic trans ( only 25 made ) . How much you think it’s worth ?
30-35k depending on condition
Hey I got a stupid question in regards of engine oil, I’m currently using liqui molly 0w20 which is a pain to gets hands on in my area, my question is can I use any other engine oil 0w20 such as penzoil and Castrol etc… they do not meet bmw longlife but who cares at this point ? Appreciate your input !
Anything 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, or 5W-30 should be fine. For a considerably tuned motor, maybe look into xW-40, but ymmv with that. I use the FCPEuro Liqui-Moly 5W-30 kit. After the second purchase, you *essentially get lifetime oil changes at little to no cost beside shipping.
Just get the liqui Moly Top tec 4200 5W30, it works absolutely fine! Kevin has a video talking about the oils for the B58
yep lots of oils work. make sure it meets the bmw specification
GranCoupe B58 Gang!
Yeahhh 🎉 440i GC owner here with the mighty B58 😃👍🏻
Does anyone know if the 540i m sport package comes with an lsd from factory ?
It does not
Have you seen the recent B58 failures occurring with the injectors / piston heads? Wondered if you had an opinion on that ?
i made a video discussing injectors a while back. i may make an updated discussion at some point.
What’s your thoughts on magnetic drain plugs for the gen 1 b58? Haven’t really seen much about that.
if there are options it probably works fine. I don't think its really necessary though.
also some oil filter housings like paradigm have an integrated magnet to accomplish the same thing.
@@kern417 yea I saw that, you run the colored one on your cars? Thinking about grabbing it, just a bit scared about breaking off the little black piece transferring it
@@i_villa7967 i have the black one. Again not necessary but a nice solution if that's your goal
Thanks Kevin for informative video I really enjoyed it. I currently drive 2020 x4 with new B58(B58B30O1). Planning to do custom calibration/tune stage 1 basically, i curious would i need to change oil now more often and do i need to do maintenance sooner than usual when its stock? Thanks in advance
for the most part stock maintenance intervals are fine. send your oil out for analysis after your oil change to confirm.
Fun fact that could have been mentioned here - B58 does not exist in an xDrive configuration with a right steering wheel! (Which sucks for UK).
Don’t mean to spoil the party here, I believe from where I’m from, (Malaysia, we are a right hand drive nation) the g20 M340i xDrive (B58) exists here in my market in pre-LCI & LCI version.
@@scottsiew6363 You are right - I should have specified that my statement is valid for F3x, hence Gen 1 B58.
i think he's referring to gen 1, like m140i
@@kern417 is every m140i gen1 do you know?
@@nallanw4329 yes
I have a gen 1 Pure 850 and I'm wondering if it will fit a B58 TU 6 port?
no
Do you think the gen 2 B58 (roughly 2020+ 340i) is more reliable than the gen 1? I'm considering a 2017-2018 340i to keep costs down, but also don't want to give up reliability. I think the newer gen 2 might have more tech that could break, but almost might be more refined?
it's a toss up
I currently have a gen 1, and for someone who is always worried and checking up on the car everyday it’s a nightmare past 60k miles. In the past month alone I have found many small problems that needed to be addressed. Though like I said I take fixing my cars to an extreme and purposely look for small problems. Also do a lot of preventative maintenance. If you’re an average owner and just take the car to the d(st)ealership you would love both generations- With warranty of course.. Gen 2 seems more reliable from what I have seen though.
@@andrewb229 Can you give examples of some of the small problems you've found? I'm guessing lots of rotting suspension parts and small oil leaks?
@@neilquinn Entire suspension pretty much needs a overhaul at 69k miles, did the front control arms at 65k. There is a small thrust bushing on the steering rack that plagues all F series cars. It causes a knock sound near the right wheel whenever you hit bumps. My belt and tensioner went out prematurely/earlier than expected. My rear differential seals somehow failed at 55k, leaked a lot of fluid. Parking brake clips broke, also something that while small plagues every F series car. Waterpump went out twice on the car (once for previous owner, once for me.) Verified that with carfax report. Now apparently I have a open circuit in my fuel system/fuel rail pressure modules. And from what I have heard online I will most likely be changing my injectors before 90-100k if I even keep the car till that point. First year of ownership was great, 0 problems and the car ran amazing. Once the first problem arose, it’s been nothing but more problems one after the other, and in quick succession. Might I add that my outside temperature sensor has also just failed. I could have included the PCV membrane failing as well, but thats extremely common on gen 1’s.
@@neilquinn I haven’t had any huge problems yet thankfully. I’d like to attribute that to how well I have taken care of the car, but who knows these days. Seems like a new minor problem/code pops up every few days for me
FBO?
Any issues with the vanos ?
some people do have issues with the actuator. just depends.
@@kern417 mines was the central valve. How do you know when the actuator is failing when there is no engine management light or any codes stored
hard to say. sometimes you have wonky driveability at low load
Is stage 2plus on gen1 same as stage 2 on gen 2
For the most part yes
I thought the Ineos Grenadier was the rarest B58 but that Morgan might have it beat
That thing looks amazing B58 4x4 😂
The guys is too educated to have a X on top of the speed limit. 😂😂😂😂
🫣
B58 is no longer an engine. Its a prefix for a multitude of very different engines
Hey man ! Big fan on UA-cam . Just wanted to run something by you For my MK5 Supra.
I swapped the factory turbo for a pure 800 and a light lit up saying “engine oil status unknown please make appointment for dealer” , is that normal? or would I need to take in the car again to get it checked out?
I reviewed the oil levels on the car and it is saying that they are good so I’m just trying to get your opinion/take on it since you have way more experience with the engine than I do. Thank you in advance!
I saw some people on forums saying the supra b58 had better tolerances or was better quality? I doubt it but at the same time I would not be surprised if toyota wants 'better reliability'
It’s different and probably more reliable from Toyotas viewpoint which is why the B58TU was what made it into the Supra
Sounds like copium to be honest; Toyota guys who can't accept that BMW just made the Supra engine flat-out. So the Supra B58 is better, of course, because Toyota engineers installed the rod bearings and torqued down the cylinder heads. Surely it couldn't be an off-the-shelf B58 that would've otherwise ended up in an X3!
Somehow that's kinda true, majority of b58 with issues are one in BMW's, I hardly see any problems b58 in the supra and they're even pushing more power
it is the exact same engine. period.
It is the same engine! Same factory! Same QA! It is PRECISELY the same, whether the Supra owners like it or not.
@kern417 This comment is in regards to your "A/C Blowing Warm in your 340i/Supra? Check this First! - B58 Common Issues" Video
Great video and much appreciated! I actually discovered this on my own after tinkering under the hood after a mechanic told me my compressor needs to be replaced... (not spending 2500 without being certain that was the issue). Found out the small res was bone dry, filled it, and ac started blowing icicles again. Fast forward a year and my ac is blowing hot air again... at some point during the winter the res went bone dry again (dont know how long i was driving with it like that). I topped it off with coolant and unfortunately this did not fix the problem. I brought the car to a mechanic and explained everything i know. They insist the compressor is bad but again i want to be certain before i spend the money. Any ideas what the issue could be and where/ what i can check to diagnose?
if you have a leak then it will not perform well. diagnose and fix the leak, then top off and bleed the system.
@@kern417 is it possible that the coolant is just burning off? if there is a leak, then its very slow. im not getting any cold air at the moment even with the resuvoiur filled.. are there any parts related to the ac's performace that could have been damaged due to there being no coolant in the system?
the boiling point is extremely high so that's not likely. the issue i had was the cap was bad
