But it's a very complex drivetrain especially transmission with the electronic components intertwined....

    • @lamakicker69
      @lamakicker69 Рік тому +3

      @@robbyskyline the electric motor is actually about 200hp, the gen 3 B58 in the x5 50e is detuned so it only makes about 300hp but obviously it’s capable of making just as much power with a tune as the regular gen 3 B58 that is rated at 375hp makes which is 500whp(plus the 200hp from the electric to get 700) with the JB4.

I have had more powerful engines (LS6-454), but none this smooth and reliable. I bought a 2024 Mazda CX90 to see how their inline turbo 6 compared. It too is very smooth, but too early to tell if it will be as reliable. I agree with another poster here who says the B58 may end up being one of the most sought after used motors.

    As a previous owner of 3 I-6 BMWs (both M and N series engines) all with over 120k miles, has BMW changed the material they make their gaskets from? Other than the plastic coolant lines that you did mention, my number one complaint about BMWs was the material selection of the sealing gaskets in the engines. After 80k miles or 6 years, the gasket material becomes very brittle, like glass. Once this starts you will have oil leaks and be replacing these gaskets (oil stand, valve cover, oil pan, rear main seal etc.) on a regular basis for the life of your vehicle. For comparison I also own a 1998 Corvette. It's now 26 years old with more mileage than an of my BMWs, and has never had a leak. My wife owned a 2008 Yukon XL with >230k miles and no oil leaks. For the price of BMWs and their level of engineering they should have better material selection. I really hope they have resolved this for Toyota's sake because if Supra owners start showing up with oil leaks in the next two years, it's not going to be good for their reputation either.

    • @oleksandr8371
      @oleksandr8371 9 місяців тому

      Agreed. "For the price of BMWs and their level of engineering they should have better material selection.". Unfortunately, they do it on purpose. BMW is no longer in business of providing engineering that lasts, rather engineering that lasts until warranty expires. It's a pretty sad design philosophy they've adopted. Great cars, great performance, but terrible reliability, all by choice, greed prevails.

This is part of why semi-trucks and modern diesels have a feature to raise rpms during extended idle periods. You will find this info easiest in Caterpillar documents. Reliability is sort of odds of failure, you could have the most reliable model and still have failures or the least and never have an issue.

    Hello Kern, i just bought 22’ 840i Xdrive 20k miles b58C if im not wrong,2 port one
    Since its heavy, what would you recommend me? Il do bench unlock and bm3 stage 2 with 200cell downpipe, i was told il get around 500hp at the crank.
    Is it possible i use ethanol mix on the weekends, and gain 570-600 hp on the crank?
    Since we dont have it on gas stations, i would buy it online, e85. And i guess i need a map for ethanol?
    I would buy pureturbo 800 straight away but im affraid i wont like big turbo gap it has.. is it really dead at low rpm compared to stock turbo?
    Thanks…😊

    • @kern417
      @kern417  Рік тому

      just depends on your goals. stage 2 works very well and even better with ethanol. you can also get a meth injection kit and that will work well with a pure800. the turbo lag is not that bad.

    • @EMKAPRJ
      @EMKAPRJ Рік тому

      @@kern417well, i dont have goals as “times” goals.. dont care 1/4 mile etc, since its not a car for that.. i just want it to be powerfull enough for its weight, i guess thats around 550-580hp minimum to consider it fast

    • @kern417

      Then yes a pure800 should be able to get you to 550 with a custom tune

    I just found ur blog, and has learned a lot from u. I am thinking of getting a USED, x3. I am not into sophistications, I am looking for a durable, simple reliable suv. Which year x3 do u think would be good buy. I am 70yrs and would just like to drive the ultimate driving machine before I move on to the pearly gates. I would like one that has the following: RWD, non Turbo, Natural Aspirated engine ( no direct injection), auto transmission, non Air Suspension, solid roof if possible. I am thinking of one that has a B58 engine (or maybe b48). Thank you.

      Don't listen to the dealership, I literally dropped off my 2018 340i at the shop today for a transmission and differential fluid change and coolant flush. ZF who is the actual company that makes the transmission says to change the fluid between 60k-80k. Look up FCP Euro ZF8 trans service kit.
