Hey man nice Video, but i dont can see you´re using equipment for the S1H. I can only see stuff of sony biut you dont talking about this. Can you please update this informationj. Thanksy you a lot
Thanks for the video, Brandon. I like your style. This video was more like a "confessional" instead of trying to hype people up. I am curious as to how you are doing NOT using autofocus during weddings though, because it seems like being able to do focus pulls or tracking the bride and groom walking down the aisle would benefit from good continuous autocross. (I have tried pulling focus on my S1 and Panasonic 24-105 f/4 while shooting handheld and unfortunately I was just too jittery).
Great question! I think it all comes down to the overall style of the wedding films you're delivering. I should have mentioned it in the video, my go to setup with the S1H is a 7" small hd focus 7 for easier manual focusing. For weddings I use this kit and take off my on camera mics. the style of wedding films we deliver are mostly 60fps slowed down (I shoot 98% of the day on the 24mm 1.4 to overcome the 4k/60 crop) as a solo operator with one camera I have to get quite a bit of shot variety to tell the story. I rarely am tracking a subject in a difficult situation, though I have also been shooting with manual focus for close to 10 years so that muscle memory comes in handy. If you're on the native Panasonic 24-105 there are 2 settings to note. set the manual focus to linear & set your focus rotation (I like 270) it gives you way finer control over the manual focus (I've rented the 24-70 a few times and absolutely loved the manual focus experience on it) All this being said! I got the FX3 last july and used it for the remainder of our weddings in 2022 & plan on using it for this season as the autofocus allows me to shoot way faster. I still pair it with the S1H which I use as a ceremony camera on tripod.
@@brandongoodyear2468 Thank you for the replies. I have subscribed to your channel and looking forward to the video on S1H settings. Out of curiosity - and I am reluctant to ask this because I want to avoid the type of brand war that rages through the comments - does the S5 II / S5 IIX appeal to you? I am sure the FX3 is an awesome camera, and I know lens selection is terrific. Just that, I've used Sony aps-c cameras in the past and the ergonomics and such leave me wanting. (I understand that FX3 is full frame, has new menus, and more buttons than something like my Sony a6500 / a6300, and a6000 cameras.)
Haha you got it! And if the S5iix was out last year I 100% would have bought that. The biggest appeal for me with it is the ability for Canon lenses to autofocus incredibly well. The Sony was realistically a reactionary purchase based on the amount of event work I was getting last year. It also kinda worked out well to get started on UA-cam too. I had one wedding last year that I’m thankful for the FX3, so I’m probably going to hang on to it for a couple years at least.
Yeah, most creative LUTS are rec709 based (I want to make a video on rec709 because it’s a old color standard for 1080p footage, not reflecting the higher dynamic range or color of 4k & hdr capture) so if you apply a creative lut directly to the log footage it won’t have the desired look (unless the lut has the r709 conversion built into it)
You got it! Yeah the tools and LUTS available nowadays make working with log exponentially easier. If you’re in resolve using the color space transform tool makes the log to Rec709 conversion super easy.
Two other important features that pushed me to this camera from the S5, which I LOVE, but I shot a feature on the S5 and because it wasn't straight 24fps, I couldn't get a DCP made. Epic fail. And second reason... Optical low pass filter. No more moiré please. ;) Great video. Thanks for sharing.
8sinn! I absolutely love their Scorpio top handle. One of the best ones I’ve used. It also was the first system I found that supported the XLR top unit.
Really enjoyed this video great job 🤘I had recently got the S1h and will be shooting my first wedding in the next month wanted to know if I should shoot vlog or was there a profile that you think looks just as good but easier to grade? What do you recommend settings wise for shooting a wedding the s1h?
Nice! I shoot weddings a lot with my wife, it’s a fantastic options for it. I’d recommend Vlog as it’s going to give you the most flexibility, check out Panasonic’s Varicam LUTS, they’re fantastic to get a great look for weddings. For the style of wedding videos I primarily shoot at 60fps, so in 4k you’ll have the crop. I might be able to make a quick follow up video on how I set mine up for weddings, the majority of how I setup my cameras is for the fastest operation to change the settings I’ll need the most.
They truly are amazing! I don’t know if you’ve seen any of the leaks on the S1H mkii or whatever they’re going to call it. I’ve been keeping my eye out, looks like a very worthy upgrade!
@@brandongoodyear2468 Full Frame 5.9k RAW Prores, 422 @ 12 bit!!!!!! As long as you don't need AF it's one of the best deals out there. I have shot RED and Arri and Vari and the image is right up there, I actually prefer the Full Frame aesthetic, as you will know it is the same sensor in the S1H. I might upgrade to the S5II X, which would offer some redundancy with the internal codecs but it is hard to beat the S5 into the Ninja for value, usability and that incredible image. I just shot a feature film, 25 X 16 hour days and didn't have to think about the camera once.
Really debating moving from my BMPCC Pocket 6K G2 to the S1H but would love to know if an S1H ii / S2H is coming, comn Lumixx, help a player out. I do miss IBIS though as I do a lot of handheld.
I hear ya! What are you looking for switching over form the blackmagic? I have a pocket 6k g2 at work & while I don’t use it often, the one time I’ve shot with it for a commercial I absolutely loved the look/workflow. I’m personally looking at the new blackmagic cinema camera because the 6k open gate in Braw is going to be a multi format game changer (with my main client needs being social asset deliverables)
@@brandongoodyear2468 honestly, I do a huge amount of handheld work and I really struggle keeping it stable, also AF and ibis I miss and could come in very handy.
Man what top handle are you using or how are you rigging that to get the XLR adaptor on there at the same time. I want to buy the XLR adaptor but I haven’t been sure if it would fit with my top handle attached to the cage too
It’s the 8sinn cage & top handle. They have an extension for the xlr adapter. Kondor blue’s cage also has an extension for their top handle to accommodate the xlr adapter too.
I love my S1 for my corporate needs and really really don’t wanna downgrade to S5 ii to get the autofocus updates so hopefully the S1H ii is coming soon otherwise I may have to switch to canon
The S series is so versatile! What kind of corporate work are you primarily shooting? I’ve been looking more seriously at the s5iix as a gimbal/b cam. Even though it’s the s5 line it seems like a really solid upgrade from pretty much any of the first gen S1 cameras.
@@brandongoodyear2468 I do corporate videography and love the full HDMI and pro features. BUT i've recently started my youtube channel and the flip screen and better autofocus have no become more important than when I was just pointing camera at someone. So you think a S5 ii is still better than original s1?
Yeah I definitely thing the S5ii or S5iiX would be a significant update from the S1. The built in fan cooling alone is something that I require in whatever system I’m investing in (currently own both a S1H & FX3). While I haven’t played with the S5ii, from what I’m seeing the autofocus is fantastic for UA-cam talking head setups. (Currently saving up to add it to my kit)
Same! I literally just discovered that if you can get around the crop using it in Pixel:Pixel crop mode it mitigates a ton of the rolling shutter problems.
Nice video. I really respect your decision you changed your style of shooting , it makes you a better filmmaker as you said, but for wedding and …. You really need the AF . I am selling my r5 and getting s5II
Nice! Yeah I’ve been working on a high profile political campaign for the past 8 months & I use 2 fx3’s (just recently upgraded the daily capture camera to fx6) autofocus is crucial for how fast we’re moving. I’ve been looking at the S5iix as the next addition to my personal kit because I still can’t get over how good V-log is
16 bit 44 audio is CD quality. Unless you’re overprocessing it…you won’t notice a difference to 24 bit 48/96. 😎👍🏻. However…Your microphone choice will make 100% difference.
You’re definitely right on not noticing a hide difference on the exporting side at 16bit 44.1, but video has been at least 48k since dvd providing for better sync. The additional dynamic range from 24bit and the higher frequencies that can be captured at 48k & 96k (96k being how pretty much all professional sound effects are recorded) give it a noticeable difference in the final mix, I’ve also tested it using my older rode video mic NTG through an xlr adapter to get the higher quality recordings with noticeable difference. I also agree that mic choice is where you’re going to see much bigger differences too.
@@brandongoodyear2468 I’m a photographer and for me the biggest issue with m4/3 cameras was dynamic range and noise in low light. I switched over for the video which is was great but the low light is really a big problem. So I’m looking to get a s5 II the autofocus will be a major upgrade too for photography and video.
Oh yeah! You’ll definitely appreciate the low light performance with full frame. Yeah m4/3 is a fantastic video format for quite a bit, but when it comes to photo full frame or apsc is the way to go.
it's a pretty great option considering the price dropped through the floor comparatively with the release of the S5ii I've got a couple videos planned talking about using it on weddings, commercial & doc style brand story video.
@@brandongoodyear2468 If anyone is still unsure about this camera, I would suggest checking out the French Belgian film "Zero Fucks Given".
If you're on the native Panasonic 24-105 there are 2 settings to note. set the manual focus to linear & set your focus rotation (I like 270) it gives you way finer control over the manual focus (I've rented the 24-70 a few times and absolutely loved the manual focus experience on it)
All this being said! I got the FX3 last july and used it for the remainder of our weddings in 2022 & plan on using it for this season as the autofocus allows me to shoot way faster. I still pair it with the S1H which I use as a ceremony camera on tripod.
I'm also getting my schedule together for future videos, but I plan on doing a "how I setup my S1H for weddings" video in the future.
Do you have to apply a rec 709 conversation lut first, then add your lut to how you want things
Yeah, most creative LUTS are rec709 based (I want to make a video on rec709 because it’s a old color standard for 1080p footage, not reflecting the higher dynamic range or color of 4k & hdr capture) so if you apply a creative lut directly to the log footage it won’t have the desired look (unless the lut has the r709 conversion built into it)
@@brandongoodyear2468 thanks thats very helpful information. I've never done any log video so Im just looking for the easiest route in to it.
You got it! Yeah the tools and LUTS available nowadays make working with log exponentially easier. If you’re in resolve using the color space transform tool makes the log to Rec709 conversion super easy.
I love my S1h it is amazing. Great image. Lots of dynamic range. Great with the 24-70mm f2.8 Lumix Lens. Amazing camera
Such a great point! The OLPF is so underrated and gives the footage that organic feel. Still absolutely love the image out of this camera.
I put VLOG lut and colors were lovely. coming from sony and canon. canon were a bit more punchy but eco system is expensive.
What’s your top handle with the xlr adapter on? I don’t like the small rig one
@@brandongoodyear2468 Thank you for the reply it’s great advice 👊🏽 You doing that video would be cool to see!!!
After 3 years of ownership I’m about to pick up my second. Undoubtably a future classic
They truly are amazing! I don’t know if you’ve seen any of the leaks on the S1H mkii or whatever they’re going to call it. I’ve been keeping my eye out, looks like a very worthy upgrade!
@@brandongoodyear2468 I have seen the rumours yes. It will be another great camera for sure.
Great video, many thanks. I got the S5 and love it. Shooting into the Ninja. The image is poetry.
🙏🏼🙏🏼 thank you! Yeah! Shooting with the ninja unlocks a whole new level of imagery from Panasonic cameras for sure!
@@brandongoodyear2468 thanks so much
I am tempted to buy a Panasonic S1H and Panasonic S5 Mark 2 and Panasonic S5 Mark 2 X.
And Sony A74 two in fact
Haha nice video. In the opening I was thinking "This kinda looks like my city" .. I scroll down a little bit "Columbus, Ohio."
The video quality here reminds me of panasonic eva 1
I seriously contemplated getting one before I got my S1H. I know a lot of people that shoot Eva 1 /S1H as A/B cam setups and they match super well.
Great video!
Thanks.
Wonderful. I agree wholeheartedly. Though it's taken me a while to understand the nuances of it.
Great video I’m upgrading from my gh5 to full frame
nice! it's quite an enjoyable upgrade! what are you looking forward to most with the upgrade?
@@brandongoodyear2468 I’m a photographer and for me the biggest issue with m4/3 cameras was dynamic range and noise in low light. I switched over for the video which is was great but the low light is really a big problem. So I’m looking to get a s5 II the autofocus will be a major upgrade too for photography and video.
Oh yeah! You’ll definitely appreciate the low light performance with full frame. Yeah m4/3 is a fantastic video format for quite a bit, but when it comes to photo full frame or apsc is the way to go.
I'm seriously thinking of getting a used S1H while I wait for the new version to come out.
it's a pretty great option considering the price dropped through the floor comparatively with the release of the S5ii I've got a couple videos planned talking about using it on weddings, commercial & doc style brand story video.
@@brandongoodyear2468 If anyone is still unsure about this camera, I would suggest checking out the French Belgian film "Zero Fucks Given". It showed at Cannes 2021 and was shot entirely on the S1H using vintage Mamiya Sekor & Canon FD lenses. All handheld using ibis, no heavy rig, like a videographer. 422 10 bit recorded internally.
@@botbot3698 I love that! I'm in the planning phase for a project I'm going to be shooting on the Mamiya Sekors they look super incredible.
Just bought a 2 year old S1H for $1700
Thank you !
I love my S1H
I think the S5II is dope (already got my hands on a demo one) but it is not doing everything that the S1H does.
the S1H is better for pro productions and the S5II/X is better for run & gun videography
S1H = Filmmaking
S5II = Videography
I can see that! I haven’t gotten hands on with the S5ii yet but am super fascinated by what it indicates for future cameras from Panasonic
S5ii is however amazing what it gives ou straight outta box for only 2000$. Thats an absurd price to have features that competition has in their 4k+$ cameras. S1H-mII gonna be a game changer!
great colors 😎
Thank you!
Hello Brandon, great video , about the S1H , I love my S1H , ok we know about the autofocus , but I keep my S1H , great job thank you so much , like72+ 1 subscriber , have nice Sunday
Okay... But... If you sell the s1h you could get a fuji xh2s, which has basically every advantage you listed but almost none of the cons 😁
Not full frame. Not the same dynamic range, not Netflix approved.
@@contentm3893 full frame doesn't actually matter. Not with today's fast lenses anyways. The xh2s actually has some of the best dynamic range out of any mirrorless camera, full frame or not (check the CineD dynamic range tests). And how many of us are actually shooting content for Netflix? And if you are, are you really going to shoot that project on a s1h?
@@MikeMarrah Full frame does matter. The S1H is Netflix approved, nothing you can say changes that. No one is switching over to Fuji for major agency productions. You can talk about Fuji all day long but it's not a cinema camera like the S1H.
@@contentm3893 lol okay dude. Glad you're passionate about the profession at least.
@@MikeMarrah You don't get it. People invest in cameras and to say full frame doesn't matter is a joke. Fuji makes good gear but not if you want to be a DOF on agency or high level work. It's hard enough staying up with the Komodo and other high end cameras. MFT will be gone in 5 years, not supported. Canon has already moved away from EF glass.
I bet you waiting for S1h mark II lol
While I have eagerly been waiting for the S1H mk2 I’m pretty interested in that new Blackmagic cinema 6k. Also for the first time in my life, I’m actually content with the cameras I have & really want to focus on getting the lenses I’ll keep for the rest of my career.
