I am one of those who got tired of Pink Princess. Variegation is so unstable. Bought one with a half moon at a very expensive price and the new leaves are just full green, they are at a location in my garden with good morning sun and they arent that easy to grow. When you have all the plants you wishlist, you will then realize that the common plants gives you more joy like pothos and the green emerald. So far seeing nee leaves every week from my common plants relieves my stress from this pandemic. I get some people who loves rare plants but if your a person who just lives to see them grow, these common plants are for you.
I'm totally with you on the pink princess. I was lucky enough to find one two years ago and I only paid $7CA for it in a 4" pot. I've had nothing but trouble with it. The variegation is extremely unstable, the new leaves come out curled and stunted, and it's very slow to grow. It still lives in a 4" pot except it now also lives permanently in a ziploc bag in front of a window so it can have the humid conditions and bright light that it needs.
@@sharpestdart $7CA omg! Thats a steal. Im not really sure how much this cost pre pandemic but I bought mine ina 3inch pot for 94CAD and yessss I have an issue with the new leaves being small and curling. Its not enjoyable to care for.
Hi Sean, I laughed when I watched this video because you are 100% right. As soon as plants become available and affordable, they lose their Lustre for a lot of people. I have all the plants you showed and I still absolutely love my Birkin and my Peru. I also think that people have not given them time to mature, when they do, people will love them. My Peru is like yours, it's climbing now and I love it and my Birkin is also getting more mature. Some plant collectors sell their plants as soon as they fall out of favour before they reach maturity. I always enjoy your videos. 💚
100% this. my favourite part about owning plants is being able to watch them grow, even if it's slowly or there are bumps along the way. i think its so much more rewarding to buy a small leaf and grow it out.
The good thing about trending plants is you get to learn something about those plants, and then move on to the next group. I support trends, not trendy prices, but eh, that is the game. I think this list was spot on!
I love that you introduce us to so many varieties or species of plants. Other channels only talk about aroids or aglaonemas. Not that I don't like them. I do, tho. But I also wanna know about other plants too. So, thank you Kak Sean 😊
Love your videos, Sean. Remember that Instagram People in no way represent the world of people who grow and enjoy plants. Instagram can makes plants as tedious as fashion and makeup. On the other hand, any source that promotes plants is probably good.
When trendy plants become available at box stores, some people lose interest while I immediately take advantage of it 😂 as evidenced by my five Birkins - one for each room in my house lol
I love to grow my plants from infancy and see them grow and I don't buy expensive plants. My plants teach me patience. It's an important lesson for me.
Here in the U.S., Costa Farms has not only released the mass produced Birkins and ZZ Ravens, but they also released a bazillion Begonia maculatas, watermelon peperomias, and Monstera sp.Peru. They are literally everywhere, even in grocery stores. That's why those aren't popping up as much on Instagram.
For me, I feel like even tho monstera deliciosa is a super common “basic” sort of plant that everyone has, it’s still so stunning and I stare at mine literally every day and it makes me so happy😍 But I only ever see love online for Albos or Thai Constellations😔 I love the standard green ones I feel like they’re so underrated since the ✨cool✨ thing is variegation😩
I have a Thai and it has nowhere near as much charm as my plain Jane. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong, but not really worth the price and barely grows. My green is like a weed and just stunning and luscious.
I hate that, people raise prices so much I live in Panamá 🇵🇦 and here the raven is so expensive for a little plant that have the smallest roots, my grandma dreams of one but she's been waiting for such a long time
I'm extremely grateful that these plants are falling out of trends. I just started a whole new collection this year and I was able to find gorgeous specimens either secondhand or from big box stores for less than $15 each.🎉
I like how when you say you are working on videos, I know you mean waiting weeks or months so you can film propagation updates. I appreciate the patience and the work that goes into planning that!
Loved this Sean! 🔥🔥🔥In the last week I've brought home a fiddle leaf and an amazonica. My birkin is still one of my fav plants a year after getting it. Took my mom plant shopping on mother's day and she fell in love with a begonia maculata. I think it will be her gateway for sure! Monstera Peru is still on my wishlist! I think a lot of us are still collecting plants we saw on IG last year that are considered "common " now. They are more affordable and easier to get now😊 Perfect timing on this video!!
Thanks to Costa Farms, the ZZ Raven and Birkin can be easily found where I'm at and are pretty common. Got my Birkin last year for $17. It's still one of my favorites and still pops out gorgeous variegated leaves.
Your correct about Costa Farms...i live in Southern New England (Ma).and get many plants from big box stores...I never did like the Network plant.. and passed on the Birkin..(that one i may still get lol)... thank you for the great videos and your very funny to listen to and watch
I love the moonshine snake plant crown you're sporting in this video! :D Of all these plants, the ppp has really been a fun propagation experiment for me
I always enjoy your plant videos, however, I found this one to be particularly interesting. As you made your comments regarding why the particular plant may have fallen out of favor, I could think back and remember their time in the spotlight. I found myself agreeing with your take on why they may no longer be the “it” plant. Plants don’t change but people do. 😊. Keep up the good work. I always love learning from your channel! 👏🌿🪴🥰
Ravens have been bumped down to “uncommon” in Canada but that still doesn’t stop people from mad rushing to the hardware stores to pick up as many 5” pots for something like $20 and then divide them and resell for significant profit. It was pretty bad so the stores changed it to one per person, but that still doesn’t stop the flippers (nor does the fact that they’re illegal to propagate in any way to sell deter them.)
Hi! I have most of these plants and I love them all! I’ve never cared if they were popular or not, I bought them because I love the foliage💚. I’m happy the prices have come down for many of these plants so more people can afford them. All plants are beautiful, thanks for sharing😁
I think the problem a lot people that put plants in insta is not really into the plant they only want to get in trend ... even some of them only rent the plant just to take photo and video ... true people that love plants and collector never thinks which plant that good for photo cause they love them all no matter what price they are from cheap to high price... i seen even philo mican that “underestimated “ can grow really beautiful and have big leaves more than a hand palm ... so every plant will get their best in the right hand
Hi Sean😌🙏I liked your video today🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟I love all plants😌💖We have so many plants at nurseries these days, but the plants we already have are the best😌🙏Have a great day🌞
I totally agree with you abt alocasia amazonica. When this PLANTdemic started, ppl here in the PH sold those for like $60-100(converted for your convenience) and now they cost like $10 at the most. Thanks for uploading this tonight! Really needed to watch something relaxing before i sleep 💕
I just bought a Musaica a few weeks ago and honestly I love it. I'm always staring at the leaves and touching it. I have almost every plant on your list and most after the hype because I love them regardless. :) I don't really post on IG much yet anyway (not yet!)
i love “prayer plants”, but it’s true that they are difficult to care for them. i would love some care videos for them! i have a red maranta, a zebrina, and i can’t remember my other one. it’s not doing too hot 😆 also love how informative this video was. 😊
I've got some watermelon peperomia babies in my ficus gingseng pot. They seem to like similar care and it looks like a tiny fairy forest. I really like that pot. Recently I've been into combining plants into community pots. I think it's a nice way to emphasise the special characteristics of the plants if you pot them together with other species.
I don't have Instagram, or any other social media. I started getting more new plants last year after I bought my house. I continue to get them because I kill a lot of them.😬 I have just recently ventured onto yt to look up care videos for some plants to figure out what I'm doing wrong, but I have the watermelon, (which I bought because it looks like a watermelon, I didn't realize it was called that) I think I have the first one with circle leaves... but mine says pilea on it,... the maranta, I've killed a few medallions so I wanted the orbifollia (sp) but have held off because I don't wanna kill it, I've killed the amazonica twice and it's one of my favorites, and I think my sister in law might have just given me some clippings of the last Hoya, but I don't think I would've bought it, maybe but I don't think so, and last but not least I have the tetrasperma, it might be my newest plant, and I got it because it was on clearance at the grocery store, because the last three leaves were burnt black, so I figured I could cut it back, propagate it, cut those damaged leaves off, and add it back to the mother to get a bigger one, and it only cost me $4.The only plants yt has inspired me to buy yet is the exocita, donkey tail, and a dieffenbachia. I've actually gone to our local nursery to look for exoticas, but I've never seen one, I have seen the donkey tail there, but haven't gotten it, because I have a medusa plant, the hindu rope that I've had for a few years, and my new house just really doesn't get the light it needs, so I'm struggling chasing the sun to keep it happy, and this is the first year it didn't give me flowers, so I don't want to have another plant I'm having to do that with, but I did buy a dieffenbachia because I didn't realize they got so big until I saw a yt video. I do feel like some of these plants are newer to box stores though, so maybe these social media posts are influencing the box stores to get and sell more of these plants, because I've always strolled through and looked, and never saw some of these newer plants that have shown up in the last two years.
I don’t have Instagram, Facebook or anything else. I’m just not interested. I got into plants when we had our 1st lockdown here in the UK. I did learn about soil, light, & which plants were best suited to my experience & home before I started adding to my collection. I have bought a couple of plants on a whim & that was a mistake. Some you tubers are absolutely excellent to learn from. Sean/only plants is so interesting. You can tell his passion for plants & you just know he’s not interested in trends.
Wow you just started your plant journey a year ago.Wow your collection is beautiful and massive you had the hook up.Lol I just knew you were in the game for years.
I got my Birkin when I first got in to plants. I had no idea what it was but I was immediately drawn to it. Paid $10 at a flea market. She was definitely a learning curve for me! The raven was one that I saw at Walmart and I loved it. I didn't even know it was trending lol.
Hallo Sean,i have my calathea mosaika 3 years 🌱she stands in a 45 Inch Pott 😅and have a white flower 🤗thanks for your videos and best good wishes 💚from germany
I love how much u love plants, the way u look at them 🤩 lol that’s why I got a begonia maculata, u really did change my mind about that plant, I did not want one. 😂 also, I’m so jealous of all your cool terra cotta pots!!
Thanks for another great video! Pilea(money plant) was the plant on my 2021 mood board and I got myself one in March! She was the first indoor house plant I ordered! I have 20 different indoor plants now ! 🤣 80 outdoor! So yah my Pilea is very much on my Insta still!
Great video, it’s happening exactly the same on Instagram in Australia it’s a little sad. How plant value actually relate to how desirable they are. Another is now Cebu blue. Now it is a dime a dozen but was so rare only a year ago. Also some people seem to relate rarity to value which is totally incorrect. If only they were more into the plants rather than the monetary value but it seems like a lot will show off based on the value of a plant.
the new plants are those that Keiley Ellen posts as fancy like the bleu oil slik fern now.:). Calathea and begonia are one of the most beautiful plants there are but in our areas where it is often too dry very high maintenance and that's why they are less popular.
i wanted a watermelon peperomia so bad like 2 years ago. i finally got one yesterday at my nursery job. ive never seen one in person any other time besides then
great fun video! I have most of these plants and love them all -- and if I have them, they're not hard to find LOL (I'm just not willing to pay sky high prices for plants). The raven ZZ is still not easy to find where I am in the US, though you can buy it from Costa Farms for $50, but the gloriosum is still super expensive and hard to find.
my rhaphidophora tetrasperma never grows! I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it's been small for 6 months. I keep moving it to find a better location but nothing.
i see zz ravens and birkins at home depot alll the time by costa farms lol. glad i waited for the birkin craze to end before i got one!! also agreed about pilea disappearing from ig for sure
i was really interested in the calathea musaica when i first saw them, but after a few months i realized there are calathea varieties that are much more stunning to me. my favourite calathea atm are the warscewizcii and the orbifolia :-) happy that i now own both and check in on them everyday!
Thanks for sharing a new and useful video I like the feeling that communicates well even if the language is different Full watch, I want to come again Cheer I loved it 😍 from Korea 🌼 🌷😋😄🌺
I am so thankful for Costa Farms because I refuse to overpay for plants. A lot of these are in my collection and I love them all. I don't care what is "trendy". I like what I like 😊
They are all beautiful. Philodendron pink princess is a plant that even the growers at big nurseries have stated they are very unstable. Wont be long and people wont be buying.
That Birkin is huge! I have two and one of them I got when they were considered rare and I still love them! I also have two zz Raven and I would not consider it common in the USA yet and I still love* them too. I’m still waiting to get my hands on a musaica and it makes me glad when rare plants become common because they become affordable and accessible 💙!
I’m in the states, and having heard the same story about all the ZZ Ravens at the big box stores, I’ve been haunting them the past year with zero success :(
That Calathea is so easy to find now. This year I've seen them everywhere and they're dirt cheap. Nobody really wants Calatheas because they' need high humidity and will almost always have brown tips to some degree.
I agree with the Calathea Musaica. I can't appreciate it unless I'm looking at it closely. But the Ornata, Sanderiana, the White star, Beauty star, WOW! The Birkin is awesome too but still pricey.
Prices for Birkin and Orbifolia have come way down just in the last few months. Nurseries are trying to get rid of them. I have both of these plants. Birkin is an excellent grower. I think people are killing the Orbifolias or they are realizing how demanding they can be. My leaf edges started to crisp when I thought I was doing everything right. Found out it was the tap water in my humidifier that was too close to the plant and possibly too bright of light. Since I moved it away from the humidifier and in a darker space, no crispy edges and it is putting out new growth.
consumer society even in plants and as the objects we throw them quickly and we sit down to something else always looking for the last variation and like fashion there are currents that appear that leave and come back
All my Calathea were slowly dying off and I propagated it which their leaves start to curl up and died. Now I'm waiting for their ugly dried stem to regrow or into a dumpster. Too many plants, no time to worry.
Hi,Sean I just wanted to ask, what type of lighting does the calathea orbifolia like?I have two of them but the new leaves seem to have burnt spots on them.
For Calathea Orbifola, (in my country) I guess the reason why they are appreciated less is because of its difficulty of care (I only see sellers posts photos of them). The crisping of the leaves takes the luster off..I guess? Care tips please hehe 🥰
I luv when ppl get bored with plants, the prices come down, then I can afford it!
Right!!😂😂😂😂
So true😂

Theres pros and cons to that I guess... anyways the world has moved on to new plant trends that Costa farms now have to start producing lol.
You've seen a Peru? I can't find those anywhere. =/
I have both green "basic" one and an albo, I colour highlights the fenestrations much better than the white sections. 💕
I have a Thai and it has nowhere near as much charm as my plain Jane. It's beautiful, don't get me wrong, but not really worth the price and barely grows. My green is like a weed and just stunning and luscious.
Anyone whose interest in plants (or anything) is based on what is popular or not popular on instagram is an absolute clown.

the new plants are those that Keiley Ellen posts as fancy like the bleu oil slik fern now.:). Calathea and begonia are one of the most beautiful plants there are but in our areas where it is often too dry very high maintenance and that's why they are less popular.
i wanted a watermelon peperomia so bad like 2 years ago. i finally got one yesterday at my nursery job. ive never seen one in person any other time besides then
Watching from USA. 💚
"Stare at baby leaves for hours on end" ,😯😯😯 WOW.
Aiya, I told you already...the Caladium Thai Beauty is more spectacular than the Pink Princess!😉
😀😀
great fun video! I have most of these plants and love them all -- and if I have them, they're not hard to find LOL (I'm just not willing to pay sky high prices for plants). The raven ZZ is still not easy to find where I am in the US, though you can buy it from Costa Farms for $50, but the gloriosum is still super expensive and hard to find.
beautiful plants
Philodendron Birkins are soooo beautiful and they remind me of fiber optic lights. sooo stunning!
my rhaphidophora tetrasperma never grows! I don't know what I'm doing wrong but it's been small for 6 months. I keep moving it to find a better location but nothing.
Mine too!! Only leafless vines appear everyday!
@@belindanadela4203 I don't even get vines.
11:25 that bug/fly on the back of the gloriosum leaf freaked me out
Same! I thought it was on my screen
The birkin is a gem indeed! They have no business saying that! 😍
i see zz ravens and birkins at home depot alll the time by costa farms lol. glad i waited for the birkin craze to end before i got one!! also agreed about pilea disappearing from ig for sure
i was really interested in the calathea musaica when i first saw them, but after a few months i realized there are calathea varieties that are much more stunning to me. my favourite calathea atm are the warscewizcii and the orbifolia :-) happy that i now own both and check in on them everyday!
These are all still lovely ♥️
❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing a new and useful video I like the feeling that communicates well even if the language is different Full watch, I want to come again Cheer
I loved it 😍
from Korea 🌼
🌷😋😄🌺
Thank youu ❤️
I am so thankful for Costa Farms because I refuse to overpay for plants. A lot of these are in my collection and I love them all. I don't care what is "trendy". I like what I like 😊
I adore the Peru💚🙃 I still appreciate all of the plants I purchased💚🙃
They are all beautiful. Philodendron pink princess is a plant that even the growers at big nurseries have stated they are very unstable. Wont be long and people wont be buying.
Only buy what will bring joy, dont copy the masses
Yes!
Me: Hits Like first 👍🏽 then watches entire video 👉👈
Thank youu
You just listed all the plants i want :D (Or just got like the pilea peperomioides.) On top of my plant list is the philodendron birkin, i'm in love.
it IS sad that when plants become common ppl loose interest 😪
I’m in the states, and having heard the same story about all the ZZ Ravens at the big box stores, I’ve been haunting them the past year with zero success :(
I just loved PPP❤️ ! Watching from NC ❤️
For monstera peru, people are now going for the variegated version which costs a A LOT of money.
I would definitely appreciate a calathea orbifolia video, I just can’t get away from that calathea/maranta crispy edge life 😩
Lots of calathea videos next month 🙌🏻
Watching from Philippines 🇵🇭 xoxo
That Calathea is so easy to find now. This year I've seen them everywhere and they're dirt cheap. Nobody really wants Calatheas because they' need high humidity and will almost always have brown tips to some degree.
I have a raven and a birkin. I waited for them to became cheaper
I agree with the Calathea Musaica. I can't appreciate it unless I'm looking at it closely. But the Ornata, Sanderiana, the White star, Beauty star, WOW! The Birkin is awesome too but still pricey.
I thoroughly enjoyed this. Hilarious in a way.
I am still searching for Gloriosium white veins. Very hard to get in SG.
I still love all of them 💚
Hi Sean please do an update on the hoyas you propagated.
Oooo they are everywhere haha. I may do a all plant tour soon as I am about to move
@@onlyplants 👍❤️
I started my Hoya collection with the Princess. I love her.
I waiting for my wishlist plant to get common & cheaper .. so i can afford it 😂
Prices for Birkin and Orbifolia have come way down just in the last few months.
Yeahh thats what happens, usually theres an over supply after plant trends
Hey sean, does a birkin climb/need a pole? I’m abit confused as i thought philos climb.
Nopeee they dont they stay very close to the ground
@@onlyplants lol. I guess I should remove the pole from mine 😅
I am looking for a zz raven at a big box store.
the nursery I go to were selling small ones for $30. too much for a baby plant for me :(
“I’m talking to you, Anthuriums”
i am on an anthurium kick and i feel attacked 😂😂😂
consumer society even in plants
and as the objects we throw them quickly and we sit down to something else always looking for the last variation
and like fashion there are currents that appear that leave and come back
True, some plants are beautiful but not popular on social media
The ZZ raven is soooo slow growing.. but I'm glad mine finally grew a shoot after a 5-month long wait.
Bright indirect to medium. I have a lot of calathea videos coming next month with lots of care tips. 😀
please let me know, what mix soil do you use for pilea peperomioides ?
General potting mix 😀
For Calathea Orbifola, (in my country) I guess the reason why they are appreciated less is because of its difficulty of care (I only see sellers posts photos of them). The crisping of the leaves takes the luster off..I guess?
Care tips please hehe 🥰
There will be a lot of calathea episodes next month 😀
@@onlyplants yey! Sooooo excited 🥰👏
