I actually really dig Charles’ (implied ) backstory. Most indie horror games would pull the “this abomination from hell used to be human but then was experimented on and is now a demented monster” trope, except here.
Charles was never human. Just something discovered by humans. It took over the body of an engine, probably for extra protection and now terrorizes the island. I love it

The idea of the Spider using the train as a shell is actually pretty cool, and sounds extremely logical. Well, logical for this universe. But wouldn’t the searing hot boiler inside the train hurt the spider when it crawled inside?
Perhaps it wasn't in use at the time.

Or it's from real deep in the earth as in touching the stone is like touching a heated stovetop hot
If it's from that deep it wouldn't be too surprising if it was clever enough to try blending in by making itself look like a train but not clever enough to realize that trains lived on tracks nor did they have legs
Also assuming the island was named for one of its native fungal species
It would lend credence to the idea of it either living near superheated locations or being such
What better way of making sure no fungus takes root than frigging boiling it alive
@@noisyphilosopherkrk522 its not smoke organs from what i could tell as that is extremely illogical, but i think its because the spider is instead making another gas that produces heat to warm itself up as metal is a good conductor and cools down rapidly
i mean its pretty clear charles is supernatural aside from being a giant spider. Like what happens when you sacrifice the eggs in the temple? he TRANSFORMS and gains the power to TELEPORT. These are not qualities of a mere overly large spider.
I think that sense Charles came to become basically a train what if one of the eggs had like a fracture in them and the owner of the train left it behind inside the train so Charles had to live off small species's while running back to the train until be became gigantic and couldn't fit in the train than stopped eating broke the train sides with his gigantic thiccccccc legs no homo and he started eating humans so he gotten bigger and couldn't get out of the train so now he takes the form of a train and the smoke is probably coming from those tiny lol hairs on his back inside the train because if he's a giga spider from hell he has to at least have fire abilitys so he probably used them on his back burn the tiny hairs on his back to cause smoke and hears the thing what if the eggs hatched all at once what if the baby Charles had web and fire abilitys basically like ghost rider mix with spiderman which fire that could form around the webs and they pull you off and rebirth Charles when they all get together
I like how all the NPC’s run away and hide whenever Charles is around. Really adds to the commitment.

Fun fact in this game there is a letter about :"gus the bus" in this letter it states that Charles fears gus the bus meaning gus the bus is likely a predator to Charles and considering Charles is a spider gus the bus would most likely be a predator to spiders. There are 2 creatures that make sense for gus the bus, another spider as spiders eat spiders but in opinion its too boring but it's a possibility.
The second creature is a centipede as irl centipedes eat spiders so gus the bus could be a centipede which I could see happening

The Snake mention was from the church sermon note, naming Charles as a spawn of hell, but a spider not a snake/the Serpent.
Something interesting is initially the developer wanted the game to be more simple where you goal was to sacrifice people to Charles by kidnapping them and tying them down to a track for them to get run over by Charles to appease him. Then over the course of development it became what it is now. But who knows maybe that game idea could work as a sequel or spin off story.

Theory: The eggs aren't from Choo Choo Charles. The eggs are from Gus the Bus, as there is a note talking about him, and in the church a note says "Snake VS. Spider (spiders have more legs usually)" as Gus might be a snake bus, and snakes lay eggs. Spiders also lay them, but they look different then the eggs in the game, Charles probably protects the eggs because he fears Gus and he believes Gus will come if the eggs are destroyed.
I'm certain that gus the bus is a reference probably to the actual talking school bus thing google it
My personal theory of why Warren warned that killing Charles would make things worse goes a little bit into the supernatural side. Essentially, Charles' eggs cannot hatch as long as it is alive. Think of it as a supernatural clause that says the offspring cannot spawn until the parent(s) are dead. However, there is no clause about how many eggs can be laid, or of how many will hatch once the parent(s) are no more. Warren figured this out and thus forbode the people from trying to kill Charles, bc as long as it is alive, there is only one monster in the world, and it's one that can be scared away and doesn't seem to be able to get into people's houses. Now that Charles is dead, the eggs will hatch, and now there are gonna be potentially thousands of similar predators on the island. And if they manage to find a way to choo-choo in a boat, well...

That may be what the gus the bus thing is.... maybe the spiders grow to the size of the shell they are in. So the bigger the vehicle or maybe even a house is. The bigger the spider.
I also like the fact of the lore of Charles’s is based on how he made the model. If you watched his behind the scenes, he explained how he made Charles was he got a free spider asset and put it inside a train he had already made, fun little nod to that
This would mean that it would be possible to kill all those giga spiders with basic modern weaponry, because they don't have the train shell that charles did. There could be a sequel if the creator decides to make one, or instead the ending could just be left for us to wonder.
Wait, does this mean they work kinda like hermit crabs then? What if they get their hands on hollowed out boulders to fit themselves inside then?

Remember, they don’t just need trains, if they can find the right opening, they could be in tanks or cars, and remember there are a lot of trains left on the map after the chaos, I’m sure most of them will pick up the trains.
He got impaled by sharp wooden spears, even if there were millions of them, they wouldn’t stand a chance against a military such as the US or China.
@@gojigiante well it’s a bit more complex, steel spike, thrown into the air and fell right through the middle, hit in weak spot, and don’t forget that this thing was taking rocket launchers to the face like it was nothing, millions of them probably take out most of us.
It's interesting how, if you think about it, Charles isn't really evil in a traditional sense.
He has a disturbing face likely meant to scare off potential predators or rivals. He only attacks the miners when they trespass on his nest and start stealing his eggs. He comes to associate humans with the egg thieves and probably develops a hatred for them as a result, kinda like how animals abused by humans can become hostile towards or distrustful of them(especially since they shot at Charles and injured him). He's not a demon; just a very large spider-like creature protecting his young, and probably looking for the stolen eggs(hence why he's wandering the surface). He can gain power from the eggs, yes, but they were sought as a power source; I imagine that's just something that can happen to things affected by that energy. He probably commits to a fight to the death because he's fucking *furious* that the eggs were lost, and he's killing the people responsible. Tl;dr, he's so blinded by anger that he throws caution to the wind.
He's certainly territorial, but at the end of the day... he's no more a monster than the people who tried to exploit him. He would have been no threat at all if he'd just... been left alone.

I entirely agree, he's not evil, I doubt he even has morals close to what humans experience, he's not a good guy turned evil from a "tragic backstory" he's just an animal, and I love how the devs made it that way.
All I know is that Thomas the train used to be different back in the good old days.

I personally believe Charles IS Theodore's old train. The one in the junk yard is far too rusty, in my opinion, to only have only at since Charles escaped. The note that mentions Theodore and Eddie delivered supplies, and Eugene says one operator was killed so you will use his train. Theodore is alive so you use Eddie's train, which looks to be in the same condition, as far as rust, as Charles. This makes me believe they had to be used around the same timeframe, which makes me think Charles is the train Theodore used while Eddie used the one you get.
One thing to note is, spiders don't have three segments, they only have two.
The cephalothorax, that is a thorax merged with the head (Thorax is the middle segment of usual insects), and the Abdomen, the back segment of most bugs. Their legs are located under this cephalothorax.
Based on the ancient tablet appearance of the monster, and appearance of Choo Choo Charles itself, they can't be classified as a spider. Since they appear to have 3 segments.

Another thing I want to point out is that the spider in the tablet has really well defined chelicerae, unlike what we see on Charles so I'm kinda skeptical if that spider is actually Charles.

Considering Charles is magical and the train he wears sorta works, in more inclined to believe he simply possessed instead of crawling inside.
I was just so interested in the biology of Charles, like how his organs work with the train body, if the doors can open, how the babies will look like when they hatch and other stuff

I think they should make a movie with this theme. A giant spider taking control of a mining train and terrorizing the residents of the island, before being ultimately killed. The scene with the eggs shaking would be a perfect ending

i got a small theory about the egg suddenly hatching.
some spiders die before they get to see their children and then the newborn spiders come out and eat their dead mother, maybe the spiders in the eggs can sense when charles dies and start hatching to start eating their mother.
I like the fact that James did a theory video . he explained the lore but he also but his own funny effects and spin on it, tbh this video is great and I would live to see more of it! :D
Theory: there can be only one Charles
So that one egg is the only one shaking at the end, and that one egg stands out from the rest, well what if Charles laid those eggs to basically gain infinite life, when Charles dies at the end, the egg starts to hatch, which means if you keep getting reborn, you can't die, so those eggs can only become Charles once the current Charles dies.
I like how Beaver is wondering if those people are worshipers or not and that the masks are all of the incarnations of how Charles design went through while on the creator of the games channel, Two Star, on one of his behind the scenes videos, shows the designs Charles was being considered to have and confirms that the people who are protecting the eggs are cultists
You're almost right, basically the reason warren said "you don't kno what you're doing trespasser, i suggest you to kneel down(forgot what he said.)" it isnt from the notes from the people in the island, it's because he knows it's dangerous, the reason he went on the island is because there is something. that can cause human extinction, which shows why he tried to stop the player. And the notes were old, made from a dead man that lived in an island, the reason why his workers wore masks is because it protects them. charles originally wasnt in a train, he had a spider form. the reason he was able to enter the train and possese is because of himself. he's like a parasite that will control any insect but a spider that controls trains. how is he that powerful when charles absorbs the energy? It's because of his species. In the past, his real ancestor was like a dinosaur but a spider. For the reason why he becomes powerful is from the eggs, the eggs use life-energy. charles absorb them and gains powers.
I love how this game’s less than a week old, and there’s already hundreds of people making videos about it. Whether that be a walkthroughs, videos explaining the EXTREMELY complicated plot and lore, or people literally making life-size replicas of Charles!

The lore behind Choo Choo Charles can probably extend so far beyond our imagination, like lore that could even tell us the backstory and how the chaos even begun or we could see what happens to the island after we defeat Charles and see the EGGS! I'm so excited to see how far this game can go. Also I'm very interested to see Beaver dig deeper and explore this game even more.

I think they were successful in killing the original spider in the mines. Because why would it take months for Charles to retaliate? And wouldn't Warren and the miners notice the giant spider crawling into a train? I think they successfully killed the parent spider in the cave in. However whole everybody was diatractes by their loss, one of the eggs the miners were transporting hatched. Since it still had a soft body, the baby spider (Charles) crawled into the first home it could find for safety; which happened to be a train. Spiders do like hiding in dark dry places where their predators cannot reach them, which does include vehicles. As months passed, Charles laid dormant and fed off the radiation from the other eggs the miners were transporting to the temple. Charles grew and grew until it was strong enough to hunt on its own. Then the opportunity arrived where Warren was destroying some of the last found eggs and Charles "hatched" from the train exoskeleton to absorb direct energy from the eggs amd reach full adulthood.
My strongest piece of evidence would be the egg at the end of the game preparing to hatch. It was only started to hatch AFTER Charles had died. It could be an evolutionary way to avoid overpopulation. Because the island should have already been crawling with them long ago. And the ancient tablet depicts a group of people fighting just one giant spider.

I personally think the cavern of eggs after the ending happened before the events of the main game, as this was likely the same cavern that held the eggs they spent months harvesting energy from.

That’s why Charles is so ironic, unlike most mascot horror games, he’s the monster who actually like a monster not a victim, he wasn’t experimented on or created to life by humans souls, just some evil power hungry creature that loves to terrorize his own victims
It’s interesting to see how in the beginning of the game, Charles looks like he is smiling, but then if you pause at the end where you see his face while Charles is in the air, it almost looks like he is crying. The faces are very different.
The notes/timeline were placed around so randomly when you’re trying to read through everything/visit all the spots they’re at, so thank you so much for going in and actually piecing together a possible timeline/narrative of what happened in the mines that day! It was getting pretty confusing at times 😭

I had a slightly different thought too. Maybe Charles wasn't there when they found the cavern, but as they started using the eggs for power one of them hatched, and that was Charles. So then it would have been the eggs the player put into the triangle that caused the other egg in the ending to start hatching
i'd buy into a xenomorph style theory: Charles's species is hive linked by that mysterious energy, when the last of the species falls more rise to repopulate, so keeping the 3 eggs AND charles intact keeps the swarm at bay, like you noticed the scout and don't want to alert it, lest the horde shows up
by 5:33, remembering my playthrough as well, im sure of it. Warren is the Wayland Yutani equivalent, knew about the spiders and learned their mechanics quickly. sure he kills off his own men, maintaining the secret is a global security risk, the only reason this isnt a worse situation is simply because the spiders seem stuck on/in the island. the masks are the equivalent of real world bengal tiger deterrent masks, Eugene is either intentionally/accidentally the destroyer of the world, for convincing you to come to this absolutely secret remote location

With that theory about Charles using a train as armour; in the scene where you put the final egg into the prism, and Charles' legs become more jagged and larger, we see the boiler of the train begin to change shape and warp as though being dented from withing by Charles transforming. Just thought that was something cool that provided evidence for this theory.
I didn't expect this game to be as fun to watch as it was. When I saw the title, I laughed cause I thought it would be something stupid, but I actually got invested in the story.

I have a theory of how Charles became a train. An egg rolled out into a train (just like how our train looks) the yellow train could become like Charles if another chapter is released.
I feel like the eggs hatch when they come in contact with the open air or oxygen that's why there's only one giant spider . Charles' egg was discovered long ago and then Warren heard of it and that's when the 3 other eggs were discovered . The first people to discover the eggs probably closed off the cave after Charles hatched and decided to close off the cave . But Warren didn't think to do that and that lead to some air getting in , leading to that one egg at the end shaking .
Edit : actually from what I saw in Greg's note , the cave they found was a completely different one from the one we see at the end. They were apparently able to destroy all the eggs there except the last 3. So the hole in the ceiling of that cave must have been caused by something else .
Problem with this...the 3 we destroy have been exposed to air for months yet showed no signs of hatching? If they hatch when exposed to air you'd think the other 3 would of. There's also air in caves, they aren't just devoid of air (they're not a vacuum).
@@testerwulf3357 I meant oxygen . If the eggs absorb all the oxygen in the cave it will eventually run out . And we don't know how long it takes for the eggs to hatch . We also don't know when the post credit scene takes place . In case you didn't notice ,the one egg that was hatching was seemingly underneath a giant whole in the ceiling which probably connected to the surface and probably let more oxygen come to that one egg which is why it was the only one hatching at the time (of course the others would probably hatch eventually as well )
So, I’ve realized something. Looking at Greg’s note, he said Warren told the workers to not destroy the last three. However, as shown in the end cutscene, there are hundreds if not thousands of eggs still left. This means one of two things. Either A), the workers only managed to collect a smaller amount of eggs due to Charles forcing them to flee and collapse the mine, or B), the miners haven’t even found the largest collection of eggs. They only found a small portion of the eggs, separated from the rest, which is why Greg says “the last three”. Assuming B) is correct, no one on the island even knows of the cave filled with thousands of eggs. No one knows there are still more of those demonic creatures still in existence, which most likely means the island’s residents are in for a very unfavorable and unforeseen future. I’m willing to bet that the sequel (if there is one) will take place after some of the other eggs hatch, leaving the protagonist on another hunt to kill off the source once and for all.
But apparently the people just wanna leave the island, and considering that eggs as hard as diamonds can take a while to hatch, especially for a baby spider that was just recently formed, that gave the residents a considerably big time window to leave. And their attempts (& weapons) to kill Choo Choo Charles shows their willingness to use an opportunity, especially ones that can last for a while.
I literally thought the same thing the same moment that I saw Charles's design for the first time months ago that it's basically like a spider monster using a train carcas that it found on a scrapyard behind the Kratos looking dude's house as a protective shell
i don't think charles's face was that distorted to begin with but rather started to form that way from only eating raw human flesh
James missed out one thing in this game. He didn’t predict the spider energy eggs being… kinder eggs!

"Aranearum" is probably not the fungus, considering that the word "Aranearum" is actually Latin for "Spider". Then again, it could be referencing both the fungus and the Latin word.
Let's say your theory about the "crazy" people and there masks that means that Charles acts like a pack of wolfs so if all of those eggs hatch that means they won't attack each other but work together.

Gonna throw a theory I have into the ring. It mostly connects with this theory though
All three of the people who hold the keys to the egg mines have a part of the story.
These eggs will (obviously) hatch into baby Charles Spiders if not destroyed. When they are being destroyed, Charles seems to take the energy from the destroyed eggs so he can more easily kill the egg thieves (similar to how some animals with good parental insights will hunt down anything that hurt/killed/ stole their babies until the thief or the mother dies...kind of like the Velociraptor and Protoceratops fossil that everyone knows about). Great video man. Now I'm wondering considering what we learned about Charles that maybe Gus the Bus (yes that's an actually thing mentioned in a note in the game) is the next version of Charles. Or some other horrible monster that is similar but not the same. After all, Even Charles is afraid of Gus.

I'm sure it's likely just a joke reference. Gus the bus is a real thing, and it actually has really sad origins that I feel would be a bit immoral to corrupt

Honestly, I thought that the eggs contained a parasite and Charles' egg chose one of Warren's trains as some kind of host. But the theory of charles being a spider by defult sounds great aswell

My theory: The original giant spider from the train was actually killed, but before that, when no one had discovered her (it must have been female to lay eggs), when all the workers were at home, she found an old mining train, and decided to lay an egg inside the boiler. By the time they found her, they successfully managed to kill her, but baby Charles had been inside the train this whole time, feeding on the water and coal. After killing Charles’s mother, they noticed that that train in particular was breaking down, and they seemed unable to fix it (this, of course, was baby Charles eating the train from the inside), so they just abandoned it down on an old rail. After a long time, young Charles’s legs had gotten long enough to reach the ground, so he burst out in his armour that he had been born inside. After going on a killing spree, the entire mine was abandoned. As Charles grew older, his legs got longer, allowing more manoeuvrability, and he could easily het around the island. He met up with another Giga-spider (who I will call Charlotte), the two had se*, and Charlotte laid three eggs. Charlotte was later killed, and due to the se* not going right due to Charles’s unremovable armour, the eggs were unable to hatch. Due to a Giga-spider fact that I just made up for plot conveniences, the life force of relatives can give another spider extra strength. You can probably guess what happened to Charles’s kids.
I love your lore vids and this one was amazing, especially the hand drawn pictures.
Fun fact this theory of Charles is also related to reality since spiders molt so they can upgrade or neither grow to extend and they have this outer skeleton called an "Exo-skeleton" it certently protects the inner body of the spider to protect itself like Charles to what he did to trains changing each by each or its because he is out growing in them just like real life spider and if your don't know what molting means its a process of a spider growing or crawling out of its exoskeleton and it usually wait for a bit for the fangs and body to harden so it can go back and hunt preys just like Charles but in a different way

Ok, so I got a small idea why we see the egg after Charles dies. And the idea I have is from another game bug fabels. In this we game, we find a mother chomper, which, after it dies in lore it makes a seed and it immediately hatches, and when it does, it is now the new mother chomper I think the egg is similar to this seed

btw there's a secret note in the game 8-bit Ryan found about some "Gus The Bus" thing probably gonna be in the DLC or something, the note also says that Gus The Bus isn't on the same island as choo choo Charles, sounds interesting.

The real accurate theory(original from me) is that choo choo charles has been there for months or years he couldve aged inside that train and his body wouldve looked like a square like an apple becoming square if grew on a box it also confirms that he has reached adult age because he has eggs in the end so its a few weeks away or days until the nightmare strikes again
I think charles didn't attack the gaurds because they dressed like his kind maybe his/her babies?

Gus the Bus is the natural enemy of the Charles species if we compare the two Charles is considered slow compared to Gus and Gus is suggested to be bigger and smarter luring prey inside the bus body and then killing them the note suggests this and gives us a reason Charles doesnt just go to mainland its because Gus lurks there after all why go get killed by a bigger badder monster when you can just stay on an island in the middle of nowhere where your natural enemy cant find you

Personally, I think you're spot on, why else would he be part of a train? I think it's like you said, he's using it as a shell, as protection.
Which makes me wonder, what if Thomas the Tank Engine and the others are all like Charles? Some kind of creatures inside trains who have been captured, had their legs cut off, and were forced to work as trains and other things? Or what if they're some kind of government experiment, similar to Shed 17 and Project G-1?
What if Choo Choo Charles tells us something about Thomas the Tan Engine we didn't know up until now?
