I would like to add things that are more advanced. This is long so my apologies lol. First: after you use chord (echo mode) you can use any attack in a full three sixty. Just push in the direction you want and the attack will go in that direction. I don’t know if this is the same for the other melody mode because I don’t use it but I assume it is. Second: when using magnificent trio, you can press to use infernal melody during mag trio and your character will put the horn down in front of them. If you wait after mag trio is finished and then press to use infernal melody, your character will put the horn down forward slightly. This helps with positioning and tweaking the hitbox on the attack to better hit the monster. Third: when using melodic slap, after your character swings the horn down to the left, if you input another attack it will cancel melodic slap into that attack. This is helpful because melodic slap has a bit of commitment to it. Fourth: earthshaker and slide beat both have super armor and a damage reduction to them. Meaning you can tank through attacks and roars while using them. Note that the super armor on earthshaker only activates after you land the first hit. This is shown in the video when he ko’s the barroth. I assume he forgot is all. Finally: do not let people tell you that a horn is bad if it doesn’t have the attack song, affinity song, or element attack. Those songs are really good but they DO NOT decide if a horn is good or bad. They never have in any monster hunter game. More utility/comfort skills, like earplugs or stun negated, can prove to be even better than those damage boosting songs because they help you and everyone else to stay alive longer. One of my best speedruns in iceborne was against tempered ruiner nergigante using a horn without the attack song. I wish I had recorded it to prove it but I don’t so, your choice to believe me on that. Also if you never played world, you can ignore that speedrun part.
If you’re looking to invest heavily into hunting horns, yes it’s good to have a bunch of horns that carry all these songs. If you only dabble a little into this weapon (like me) the kamura horn is a solid staple. It has both attack and defense buffs, decent sharpness, a level 2 rampage slot, raw weapon (so it’s good against any monsters), and finally incredible slots. It’s essentially a stand in for the dodogama hunting horn from iceborne in which it has the basics that get you started.
HH is a lot of fun in Risebreak. I hope they can find a middle ground between new and old horn cause I really like old horn and do feel like something was lost in Rise, though I love some of the changes too.
Honestly, i watched several guides to learn the new horn. Yours got in to my skull the smoothest. I was familiar with worlds horn, but my rustiness + the changes, made me confused. This is esential knowledge, great stuff, great guide! Lovely jobly.
Thank you. Ive played the monster hunter games for a while now, was a bow main on the psp games, then on world, I became a heavy bow gun and hunting horn main. Now on Rise, I've been maining HBG, but Ive been wanting to branch back into hunting horn, but I was hesitating because I was worrying about learning the Rise Hh and gathering all the materials for a build. Currently I'm 95Hr, trying to unlock the HR 100 quest.
I think this is actually one of the best guides I've seen for the Hunting Horn ! I've been playing the weapon since before MH4U, and I do think it's the most fun to play in Rise It's really not as annoying to learn as it used to be (you had to learn all the melodies and how to play them), and I truly recommend trying to pick it up if you're interested in a weapon that allows you to dance around the monster when he's trying his best to beat you up !
Have you seen the one made by Deus? He has done a more in-depth guide, with positioning and attack Angeles included. Iixxion made great wprl on his guide and I wish he has done it for all the weapons, but Deus' guide is more informative
Current HH seems to combine the idea of music and dance with a lot of freedom. Like Gunlance, this may well be the best implementation of the weapon yet. Thanks for the well made tutorial.
Completely disagree with the comparison here. I do agree that Gunlance in Sunbreak is the best iteration of the weapon but HH is barely even HH in rise/Sunbreak. They removed the complexity from the weapon in order to streamline it to make it easier for a wider audience, whereas with GL they added complexity and a few qol changes that still kept the weapons identity intact. Iceborne HH is the best iteration of the weapon imo, had good QOL changes and new moves added to it that still kept the weapons identity intact.
@@CloudWind0643 I see. From the video it didn't seem like HH had lost so much of it's character, but i guess I never had much experience with it, so i couldn't tell. Thanks for sharing an informed opinion.
This is a spectacular guide! I only have like eight hunts in Rise with the HH since I decided to dabble in CB and I didn’t know most of this. Thank you so much! I have a lot to look forward to with the new skills I can unlock. Big Ups!
Ive been itimidated but curious and excited about getting into the HH for monthes but every guide i found on youtube was either very math heavy or assumed i knew much more about the weapon. This is the perfect guide for the nervous beginner. Excellent job.
I picked up the base game today, found your videos and have been in the training room for about 4 hours. Now i'm obsessed with the HH, SnS and GL. And i dont know which one to play first, thank you!
Thank you so much for this vid. I've played other MH games before and done some HH but I've fallen back in love with this weapon in Rise, and this has a lot of useful info, thanks a lot!
Seeing this info makes me really happy and much less hesitant to try HH again. I first tried it in World and while it felt good it also felt super complicated (this was amplified by the fact that I was a bow main in MHW). Seeing how it looks to be a bit more streamlined in Rise gives me the confidence to give it another shot. Bit of a learning curve for me though because I'm so used to range (hgb/lbg/bow user primarily)
Good timing. I'm currently trying to make builds for hunting horn coz i want to add it to my list of weapons that i want to use. It's gonna be my fourth one.
Attack up is a 10% boost Affinity up is an increase of 20% Infernal Melody gives an additional 20% attack for 20 seconds Found this info out, but I had to dig, so here ya go
One thing I didn’t hear him mention was that the resonance bead also plays the melodies that your horn plays. This doesn’t really matter for buffing melodies, but for healing melodies it is essentially played twice, doubling the heal.
When asked what Hunting Horn is the best my answer is always yes. Starting MHR I would go with the Vicello Nulo Black from the Bnahabra tree or Poetic Bell From Mizutsune tree. Negating Roars or Blights while having heals to keep you in the game to keep practicing mixed with Stamina buffs for Multiplayer to keep other people in the fight makes it easier in my opinion to learn and get into the weapon. The Kamura LBG with Pierce or Poison make getting the bug parts easy for starting the Vicello. I make them all in every game but the ones that keep you and team members from going on cart rides is a good simple way to play starting out. Though I tend to use them with randoms non-stop. On the down side people get greedy because you are healing them and that tends to kill their DPS. Keeps them from dodging roars and they learn the fight without Blights. But I usually don't go on quests to fail them. It is funny to watch the times on quest completions get longer and longer while knowing me healing and them not dodging properly is the cause. To over simplify something, Sonic Barrier + Multiplayer = Bad. If a weak attack would send some one flying and keep the stronger attack from hitting it can keep the weaker attack from knocking them down and they get hit by the stronger attack. It carts people a lot. I use it to troll my friends in Multiplayer. More ways for it to go wrong than right. Can have similar problems with Flinch Free. Explaining how Flinch Free is carting some one to them is fun...
Thanks for the wonderful tips. I just decided to change my playstyle from DB to HH. Doing some training it feels good already and my gf is probably gonna love the buffs also since we team up a lot.
just started watchin u after i finished MHR base game, just picked up the bow cuz of watchin u use it and now i think ima rock wit it till sunbreak comes out on console lol
i usually use bow or lightbow gun but since you have 3 savefiles i decided to try a close combat weapon and first tried longsword but then ended up deciding to do hunting horn cause my tought was that it wouldnt matter if i where to miss my attacks then and so far since i started using hunting horn since the day before yesterday i managed to get to hr 3 and got atleast 3 or 4 complete armor sets wich are max upgrated and so far i like misutzune hunting horn personaly the best since its can heal and i like its sound ^^
I wanted to add for those who are seeing Rise for the first time, and are playing with friends who are probably much higher rank, much better gear, etc. You're likely thinking (like me) that you're not really contributing in the fight as a low rank, being 'carried' by your high rank buddy. With a lot of weapons, that might be the case, but horn is one of the VERY few in which you can be providing a SIGNIFICANT chunk of help from the word 'go'. You might be looking at the damage going "Wow, I'm hitting for 10 and my friend is hitting for 100! How can I be contributing?" If you grab a horn with attack up, and drive your buddy's damage with his weapon from 100 to 120, that extra 20 damage might as well have come from you. Suddenly, your effective contribution to the fight is tripled with one song! If you activate Infernal melody, that's even FURTHER buffed. And DO NOT sleep on the fact that your exhaust and KO gives MASSIVE openings. My partner uses Great Sword, which requires insanely big windows to hit the most powerful attacks. He can hit for upwards of 700 to 1200 a swing.... but if the monster walks away, he hits for 0. When I knock the monster out or exhaust it, or put it to sleep with my horn effect, he can line up that absolutely massive hit- a hit that would NOT be possible without me. Dual Blade and Insect Glaive users suck up SO much stamina with their moves, that doing nothing other than giving them Stamina Use Down and Stamina Recovery Up allows them to keep up their combos for much, MUCH longer. You can argue the more the disparity in power between you and your hunting partner(s), the better your contribution as a hunting horn is, so don't despair! Your contribution to the fight is SO MUCH MORE than just numbers, and Hunting Horn is one of the few weapons that has an answer for every situation if you understand what your team needs.
using the Gunlance and Bow i have the knowledge of evading at the right time for openings however, I really tried to like this weapon and it feels weird and awkward at times to use, great video explanation though.
I like to think that hunting horns don’t lose sharpness, but they get smacked out of tune. The gain flatness if you will. And instead of whetstones you get tuning forks 😂😂
Kinda on the fence on trying out HH as it's changed so much since 4U, when I last used it a lot. Not because it's not awesome now, but I think out of ALL the weapons in MH, the HH is the one that has the most frequent "TOTAL REWORK" happen to it. It's like an entirely new weapon every game with new systems. No other weapon has this that often. Like Bow and HBG, LS, SnS has all changed a lot, but not like the HH. Anyways, my tips would be, use Hammer if you're wanting to KO more, and HH for exhaust. While both do KO and Exhaust dmg, the HH is better at Exhaust than Hammer. You mention this in the video though. Also, since your sonic attack's dmg is decided by your sharpness, get Handicraft and other sharpness extending skills. Watched another guide talking about performance+crush (or A on switch controllers... the right-facing attack button) was the best "Damage to Sharpness" ratio and the "most effective" combo.
I've heard a lot of criticism about the HH in this game, but I have to say it's the best it's ever felt. Solid and straightforward guide that doesn't spend too much time on offshoot or rare scenarios, well done! Regarding Horn Maestro, I think it doesn't increase the duration of the song buffs anymore. It increases damage and the speed of performance or chord.
I don’t agree with the fact that the HH “has never been a support weapon.” If it isn’t a support weapon, then why do the buffs apply to the whole party? Why were the clouds you left behind allowed to be utilized by everyone? I don’t know why everyone is afraid to call HH a support weapon. It very apparently can tremendously support the group, in addition to dishing out great damage and KO.
The debate is whether or not it is PRIMARILY a support weapon. To that, I say, no, it is not primarily a support weapon. it is primarily an ass-kicking weapon!
Late comment, but i think the reason why "has never been a support weapon" is always used as an argument is because some people use it ONLY as a support weapon which means corner horning
Cause, as a solo player who doesn’t have online capabilities, it will potentially deter me to think that this weapon is support only. I love that it can be used solo.
Brand new to the game. Tried DS and kept fainting OR running scared. Now I am playing tighter under the legs, trusting the evade and frames I NOW know are the reason I am getting away with posting up. Have been nervous about guessing what echo mode actually was and this video is best I have listened to so far.
HH on a slugger hammer build wairing anja x feels militant af feel i carry 80%of hunts i join and thats not including keeping the party alive. Weapon op
I'm playing Hunting Horn, it's a lot of fun. There's one thing I don't understand about that infinite combo (R->b->R->b...). The b attack after R is so slow that it doesn't feel like a combo. Why is it considered a combo?
Ik this is a late comment but I just bought rise and I'm wondering if it's possible to complete the whole game solo. Are there any points where I'll be at a disadvantage by not having online?
it is all well within your reach going solo! you get two buddies, and when you get to master rank, you can unlock followers to come along with you! its awesome. the NPCs from the village and elsewhere will fight alongside you!
I like hunting horn in rise but I do miss iceborne and GU HH Also are you sure horn maestro makes your songs last longer? I'm pretty sure it was changed in rise.
HH Main here since the PSP days, and I'll say first off, it's never been a better time to be a horn user, the weapon is so much more streamlined now! I will note that Bead of Resonance actually has another effect you didn't cover. It REPLAYS the song you use. That doesn't sound like a big deals since most song buffs don't stack like they used to, but that means if you're playing a horn with a healing song, it'll DOUBLE that healing potential for you and your whole team if they are near the bead. Also not sure why you didn't cover Sonic Bloom, but let me tell you, if you're rolling with an HH that has it, let them wake the monster unless you have a GS in the team, Sonic Bloom does DISGUSTING damage but is extremely high commitment.
I bought Rise a month or two after it launched on Switch. I hadn't touched a Monster Hunter game since PS2 and even then I played so little I don't remember it. I HATED this game when it came out. I didn't get the hype. It was clunky and slow and anti-fun. The weapons were weird and slow and clunky and boring. I gave up. About a year ago I did a Google search looking for games that had cool bard classes to play. Someone mentioned Hunting Horn. This is already too long, so basically I booted up Rise, grabbed my horn, and I've been tootin' ever since. Best weapon in the game. Fight me.
I will NOT fight you. As a bow main, I'm inclined to AGREE with you! horn is so freaking satisfying! Just can't stand any of the skins except teostra...
"Hunting Horn is NOT a support weapon" 5 seconds later. "Also if you're playing multiplayer, everyone gets your buffs" I don't even have words. But for the actual tutorial, great video nonetheless.
Bow isn't a support weapon, but I can spam heals on everyone in the party with it! If you've ever played a quest with a "corner horner", you'll know what dark paths HH can lead you down...
@@iixxion Sure but the point is Horn even way way back in the orignal was built in from the get go to affect your team, it's literally the only actual support weapon in the game. Bow's arcshot is like 5 percent of the weapon. It's not even a comparison. SnS, sure you can slot wide and be a better support but that's "turning" the weapon into a support by using items. Horn just is.
@@justinrazon7200 its primary purpose is to do damage. its secondary purpose is to buff you and your team. to me, that makes it not a support weapon! compare this to games that have "clerics" and other healing type chararacters. their primary purpose is support, so they are support characters. The problem with calling HH a support weapon comes when people think "oh i'm just supposed to sit here and buff repeatedly at a safe distance from the monster". if you can prevent that from happening, I'll gladly call it whatever you want me to call it!
@@pilkb7293 Being a support weapons doesn't mean it can't do damage or should be seen as inferior. Hunting Horn is a good weapon. It's ability to buff others while hunting is a plus. I'll always prefer a hunting horn user over hammer hunters.
@@AntonioCunningham the point is that a support weapon is largely viewed as something that doesn't do well solo. HH is very much an amazing solo weapon. Does it also support? Yes, but this version is much better as a stand alone than the previous versions.
@@notoriouspip84 Who cares if someone think it doesn't do well solo? Gun lance hasn't done well solo either. Should people not use it solo? If a person enjoy using a weapon. That should be enough. Hunting horn *is* a support weapon because *it can buff others* . This *is not* a bad thing. It's why I prefer none damage buff songs when I use the hunting horn. Playing only in a corner could be seen as bad, but not the core design of the Hunting horn. Saying it isn't a support weapon is objectively false.
@@AntonioCunningham it's really not. Saying something is a support weapon means that is the primary focus. That is an objectively false statement about the HH because it is actually just a weapon that happens to also have some support ability. A support weapon is like mercy's staff in OW. It heals as a primary function.

When asked what Hunting Horn is the best my answer is always yes. Starting MHR I would go with the Vicello Nulo Black from the Bnahabra tree or Poetic Bell From Mizutsune tree.
Can Hunting Horn support the squad? Hell yes! Is that all it does? No. Same goes for SnS
Both sides are right and there shouldn't be a debate about this things. Just saying
Cause, as a solo player who doesn’t have online capabilities, it will potentially deter me to think that this weapon is support only. I love that it can be used solo.
Thank you.. im restarting the game with a girl character and i want to focus more on Horns now
Brand new to the game. Tried DS and kept fainting OR running scared. Now I am playing tighter under the legs, trusting the evade and frames I NOW know are the reason I am getting away with posting up. Have been nervous about guessing what echo mode actually was and this video is best I have listened to so far.
excellent!
@@iixxion why can I execute with ease the second wirebug attack and NEVER have been able to send the initial wirebug "slide"??
@@katiebea9258 slide beat isn't working for you? come over to the discord and we can trouble shoot it!
Any recommended HH besides the scorned magnamalo one which I am using now? Are the elemental horns recommended?
I know I'm late but is partbreaker a good skil for HH since it a blunt weapon an u farming for stuff
partbreaker is amazing for ANY weapon, especially if you're farming for parts!
AWESOME vid, you answered questions I had and told me new stuff like the special evade, I wondered if I was avoiding damage now I know.
@@iixxion can’t wait to get into it. It’s sad tho as I can’t go online as one of the 12 hunting horn mains
I like hunting horn in rise but I do miss iceborne and GU HH
Also are you sure horn maestro makes your songs last longer? I'm pretty sure it was changed in rise.
Also Mount any monster with master mounter and earthshaker
Doot doot!
Awesome tip on the healing! I didn't even notice that happening! It's base game tutorial so I didn't get into the sunbreak stuff.
@@iixxion Oooh I should have figured that out since the consoles are still in base right now.
Can't want for console to get expansion. What's the holdup. Trying to check how rise does in the GAmepass on xbox I guess
I miss all ailments negated
I've got two tips for all the newbies:
1) Git
2) Gud
Lol hunting horn is a support weapon. But you act like that's a bad thing and that it's the only thing it can do
I still hate what they did to this weapon in rise. Truly broke my heart 😭
"Hunting Horn is NOT a support weapon"
5 seconds later.
"Also if you're playing multiplayer, everyone gets your buffs"
I don't even have words.
Hunting horn *IS* a support weapon. Why are you lying? Because of this alone, *don't recommend* anyone watch.
If it's a support than why does it do damage? 🤔
Thank you bow dawg, I will play the horn now ♪┌|∵|┘♪
