you can hear the fear in everyone else's voice when they realize that he is an articulate, intelligent man. the stereotypes of punk rock don't apply to any punk rocker in particular.
Except to the self-righteous morons wearing the "punk" uniform and telling everyone else that they are "sell outs" and "posers" for not dressing, acting, living or listening to a lot of crappy bands like them... while preaching non-conformity, individuality and escepticism. 🤦♂🤦♀
Even with the guy cutting him off, Greg kept his cool and his smile and responded each question politely. When the woman shares her religious views, pointing she believes in God, Greg acknowledge her beliefs as valid and doesn't debate further more. She responds with a light but direct argument that could of easily be turned into a full-on debate but Greg laughs it off. Man, Greg is awesome.
I truly look up to Greg. While I never played in a band, I was heavily involved in the local hardcore punk/metal scene in my country, Hungary. I have been in academia for 16 years now and I can closely identify with what Greg says about the similarity of science and punk rock (and in fact many other genres of non-mainstream music). To me punk attitude is about challenging the status quo...in science and in life in general.
Obviously Greg is on a whole different level and the others can't help but try and draw the conversation back to a level that the other sheep can relate to. Good for him for remaining poised and not pandering. Punk rock means knowing what you believe and understanding what you are against. Not just being a minor ignorant thorn in society's side, but one that is buried deep.
"Punk rock means knowing what you believe". A paradox right there; beliefs are based on delusions, not evidence. Reality hits much harder those who see the world through rose-colored glasses, but that's just the way people need to live: under permanent self-deception (or everything would be extremely unbearable, I guess...).
That's interesting. I was really impressed at how much they 'let the man talk' especially compared to how Bill O'Reilly or Fox and Friends would conduct an interview with 'controversial' people. Greg is also comically diplomatic with that woman and everyone sort of laughs about it.
Greg Graffin doesn't talk in sound bites. Fans aren't ever going to be satisfied with a mainstream tv appearence. If anything he should be moderating discussions.
What is sad in this video is the journalists dejected his academic knowledge and questioned him on his religious beliefs and music, I am more interested in his knowledge. The man is a professor at a highly ranked university.
For me, Greg Graffin is an absolute mastermind! People should listen carfully to the things he says because - at least for me - it takes some time to fully grasp the meaning of his statements. Regarding the interview, just some words from a BR song came to my mind: "The only natural thing that I despise are mediocre minds".
Cool interview, imagine he was your prof? those classes must fill up fast. seein' BR tomorrow (w/pennywise, vandals, and offspring). been years since i seen 'em last, gonna be a blast.
Yea! They were great. Surprised they didn't play "generator", but you're gonna miss something when you've been around 30+ years andyou only get 45mins.
Cheetah Thunders. I saw them a few years back w/ Danzig misfits at riot fest Denver. What a fucking awesome festival. NOFX, Sleater Kinney... so many other great bands played as well.
Speaking as an Atheist (not bapatised never went to church): People are free to believe anything they choose to, as long your belief does not intrude on other peoples way of life.
Greg is on another level than these people intellectually. It's quite clear from this interview that they cannot hang with him in an intelligent conversation for very long.
I sure wish Greg Graffin expanded a bit on the idea that, "the truth is that Natural Selection is falling out of favor with a lot of evolutionists, as the over-riding, over-arching, law like giver." That was an extraordinary claim, that needed an extraordinary explanation.
Just the fact that Greg is introduced as "Lead Singer - Bad Religion" instead of "Dr. Greg Graffin, UCLA" makes me admire him immensely, AND the way he addressed the lady who started talking about God, is simply amazing and worthy of admiration \m/
Environmental Scientists also have hit the "ordered" issue as in the case of 'balance in nature'. The more information we aquire the more it becomes painfully clear that there is no linear directed balance in any environment and I think Graffin as an evolutionary biologist has probably hit on this same road block in his studies as evolution is dependent on environment.
Minus the whole attack on religion and the fear of punk rockers view on this program, you can tell that no one actually read the book or they would of had more intelligent questions to ask. Honestly, the book is amazing. The descriptions of his excavations in Africa, traveling with scientists, and the chaos of the insect population were well written. Some of the best Punks in my life, like me, have careers, are intelligent, see shows, play in bands and support the local scene. I hate stereotypes
At my college I know two PhDs who played in popular hardcore punk bands 10-15 years ago, both became suits :) , so you wouldn't be able to tell now. They are very popular professors now. Also, the bass player of a legendary Hungarian hardcore punk band has earned a PhD in the US. He is inked up to his neck. ;) I wonder what students say when he enters class for the first time at the beginning of the semester. :)
Matt Thomson Christian, you really are a fucking clown and a dumb ass clown at that. So shit head, why don't you try and read my comment again but focus on the words blathering and intellectual. Matt Thomson is just an idiot.
Jj Jones Wow, you're really worked up aren't you (jesus jack-off) jones. Maybe you need to have a little prayer session and think about your language, and excercise a little compassion and forgiveness such as you lunatic Christians are supposed to? Or would you rather just throw around defamatory pathertic comments with no direction or purpose?
Wow, hold on and lets unpack this little jewel of a comment. So according to you, Graffin the blathering fool is " the most intelligent, and intellectual person then anyone that I would know based upon educated thoughts through science form especially through music." MichiganMike15, were did you go to school? This sentence is close to complete gibberish, did you finish high school? Ok lets just move on to the next grammatical cluster fuck " Religion is the most ignorant thing a person could ever believe in, and would be more of the blathering fool in that source." Right, so I guess I could get what your saying since you did use some key words but Mike besides the fact that this has nothing to do with my comment on Greg Graffin, your fixation on religion borders on delusion. Tin foil hats aside Mike, you should really try and organize your thoughts or at least seek medical treatment for those racing thoughts. I can't say for sure that people aren't out to get you but that voice in the T.V. might be. Just saying.
Natural selection is not the only pressure that the theory of biological evolution talks about, but natural selection has been a huge impact on the earth biology
science has found many ways to measure, weigh, explain, describe almost anything but the one thing that cannot be looked @ under a microscope or explained in a classroom is,GODS LOVE and the work that took place on calvary
This how how they should have introduced Greg; "And with us today is the lead singer to the greatest band of all time-Bad Religion, Ladies and Gentlemen-- Greg Graffin!"
im sure greg knew it was gonna be an interview like it was.... The best part is how respectful he is.... i rarely see such professionalism in people defending the belief of god, as greg has in the defense of "science"
Things that once demanded bloodshed are now covered by grace. That is why I think God is good. Our morality clearly cannot be left to our own rationality. If it could, people wouldn't kill other people in cold blood, abuse children, or cheat on their spouses.
I've never gotten into a conversation about who believes more, so I can't really comment on that. Believers are not supposed to quarrel amongst themselves.
***** where on earth are you getting your information? "I am a real Christian - that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ." Thomas Jefferson
They teach us in school now that the founding fathers wernt actually Christians. Either that, or they 100% skip teaching or talking about any biblically related phrases or parts of our constitution and bill of rights. My teachers stress the fact that Benjamin Franklin had a black wife that was his slave, and how we took the Indians land, but never talk about any Christian related ideas in the History of America. Schools now a days make our founding fathers out to look like assholes. At least in California. So... That's where that guy gets his information probably. America is so twisted and ruined now.
Part II Believing that god created the primary matter is completely alright for now, so long as you don't think that he is also the driving force behind things that happen today. There's an analogy I like to use: You are told that there is a black cat in a dark cave and that you need to find it. Philosophy is looking for it in the dark, Religion is giving up on looking, merely shouting "I've found it!", Science is using a flashlight.
I was speaking of two different scenarios. One involved everyone, when I was speaking about everyone knowing that there is a God. The other involved only the Christian community, when I was speaking about the uniting factor in the Christian religion, despite all of our different denominations.
True, people are going to be people, no matter what religion they follow. What I meant to say was that we all believe in Him, and that is what unites us. No matter what we find to squabble over, we all have faith in Him.
I'd like to see greg graffin interviewed by a group of intellectual peers. it seems like he's always on talk shows with halfwits. anybody know of interviews / appearances on television or radio he's done with more thoughtful or intelligent hosts?
I am glad Greg is such an educated gentleman and a smart man, every damn interview I have seen of these guys is such so full of shit, they are really ignorant. the guy have a PhD in geology, give him at least a little bit of respect, they seem that the only thing they want to do with every person in their show is to make fun of them.
Partly because of doctrine (aka words of human wisdom), which creates factions (aka denominations). Often, people confuse God with doctrine, and because we humans tend to be prideful and we tend to like to think that we are the only ones who have it right. So we tend to quarrel about these words of human wisdom (which we are specifically told not to do), instead of focusing on our One uniting factor: Jesus Christ.
No need for the hatred. Believing in both God and science is a perfectly valid view. Religion often conflicts with science, but it doesn't have to. Isaac Newton was a Christian. Einstein was raised a Jew and became pantheist. I'm a pantheist and accept the validity of science. Religion is metaphysical, science is observation-based. She could believe in both God and science without conflict. As Greg says, it's a perfectly valid view. Peace.
I usually end up hating 98% of the bands I listen to when they open their mouths in interviews. I try really hard to stay away from interviews, but sometimes I falter.
And the thing I hate most about many BR fans is that they look at Graffin as some sort of deity because he has a doctorate and because he uses seldom used words in his lyrics. And lets face it, after against the grain, BR died (OK, I'll give them Generator, it was kinda OK). I would rather a band die off than keep pumping out crap.
Well... right! It's all about peace and love and forgivness and living good. I think that's what most people think as true and proper, no matter if they believe in God or not. But religion gives some clues on how to achive it. At least this is the relgion for me. And I don't care how many ppl were killed by "religious" people. They werent truly religious if they killed. Ive got my life,my decisions. I'm not obligated to be blamed for not my mistakes. I try do live good and Bible helps with that.
I just watched Fargo season 2 and n then this..i just realized greg look alot like patrick wilson..hes the one who shouldve played a role as older lou solverson in Fargo season 1.. That wouldve been awesome
any man against religion or god an authority .is considered saved and intelectual.!i feel sorry for those who still lie inside a bubble where most live with all those concepts of life.religion government god..we are here to be free..
Contrary to popular belief, Christians do not merely sit on the sidelines and watch the world go by. Faith without works is dead, and we take that seriously. The fact that people oppose God is evidence of universal knowledge of His will. We have missionaries because Christ commanded to go forth and preach the Word to all the Earth.
And in spite of all Greg's lofty rhetoric about anarchy and social justice, the guy's made a nice chunk of change off the world's restless, disaffected youth.
Loved the book. Love Greg Graffin. Hate this interview. I'm now realizing that everyone on MSNBC is not really as smart as I thought...I'll stick to NPR I guess
That we have dinosaur fossils and diamonds that exist, but according to scripture, couldn't. Carbon dating disproves any biblical scripture. Where's the proof of the great flood? There should be an even line of fossils from all the creatures killed during this worldwide flood, that somehow a drunk managed to collect two of ever species of animal onto a boat while we still discover animals to this day. Don't get me started on flat earth and the idea that the sun rotated the Earth. Look up Sol Invictus.
It's so funny, morning talk shows are so full of fluff they're not prepared for an atheist. Greg did a great job carrying himself though, because if that woman said to me she thinks science leads to god i'd say prove it.
We all have free will. Even Christians can choose how they are going to use it. We're not talking about a politician, we're talking about an all-knowing, all-powerful God. He made you, and Romans 1 says that you know He exists. You can't oppose something you don't believe exists, that's just crazy. Everyone knows that God exists, but not everyone has heard His word. Christ cannot return until everyone has been taught His word. I believe in both the Old Testament and New Testament.
It's proven more so with a deity that morals do not matter, only god does. Have you ever heard of athiests fighting about who believes in god less? no, but religious followers fight all the time on who does MORE.
you can hear the fear in everyone else's voice when they realize that he is an articulate, intelligent man. the stereotypes of punk rock don't apply to any punk rocker in particular.

The perfect package....Punk & a PhD. I adore Greg Graffin!
Greg is such the ambassador----he could have ripped them all a new one but chose to be a gentleman
"Bill Maher let Bill O'Reily off the hook" - Greg Graffin
That is so powerful to me at this very moment in my life lol
Such a gentlemen, a boss, and a scholar
Amen
Greg, Dexter, and Milo are the best punkers with PhD's!
Love all this skate/hardcore/melodic hardcore punk bands
Why the hell didn't they introduce him as a professor first? They just tagged it on at end.
He's there to talk about his book, not Bad Religion.
Probably because he’s more known for the popular band he’s in, genius
Even with the guy cutting him off, Greg kept his cool and his smile and responded each question politely. I love hearing him talk
These television hosts are annoying. let the man talk
Why do it to yourself Greg? These types are never gonna get it man, it requires intelligence and reason!
I agree
He handled it like a gentleman though
how else will he make a difference? Graffin for president
What is sad in this video is the journalists dejected his academic knowledge and questioned him on his religious beliefs and music, I am more interested in his knowledge. The man is a professor at a highly ranked university.

Cheetah Thunders. I saw them a few years back w/ Danzig misfits at riot fest Denver. What a fucking awesome festival. NOFX, Sleater Kinney... so many other great bands played as well.
Haha Greg is awesome "I don't want to play at the state fair" I just saw them play at the OC Fair last night lol
It's not really a fair tho lol. I was there
This guy should be president of the united states !!!
Speaking as an Atheist (not bapatised never went to church): People are free to believe anything they choose to, as long your belief does not intrude on other peoples way of life.
I pray greg can see that one and one is five. ;)
That would be the best fair concert ever!
No sweat! The ones that didn’t make it…. Made their way to the ears of those whom could
Greg is on another level than these people intellectually. It's quite clear from this interview that they cannot hang with him in an intelligent conversation for very long.
It's obvious they don't agree for the most part and that's why the topic is not dug into further.
I sure wish Greg Graffin expanded a bit on the idea that, "the truth is that Natural Selection is falling out of favor with a lot of evolutionists, as the over-riding, over-arching, law like giver." That was an extraordinary claim, that needed an extraordinary explanation.
He knew his hosts and their television audience could keep up with him, but he nice about it. I'm definitely going to read his book.
Greg ROCKS!!! BR4ever 🤘🏽
God damn this man is amazing. You can really tell who's the more smart and logical person in the room
Just the fact that Greg is introduced as "Lead Singer - Bad Religion" instead of "Dr. Greg Graffin, UCLA" makes me admire him immensely, AND the way he addressed the lady who started talking about God, is simply amazing and worthy of admiration \m/

Smart guy, can’t say I agree, but I enjoy the perspective
i like too think greg proved that not all punks are mindless anarchists, and his song writing is so smart and makes you think... greg is a hero!
Greg is the most humble man i've ever not met
Why hes my favorite punk vocalist
What an amazing man! Next book on my list!
The best way for people who are contrary to listen and to change their way of thinking, is to silence people who are openminded and reasonable.

I saw Beck at the Arizona state fair in 06' and it was quite amazing. I guess most state fairgrounds don't have a huge performance arena though.
Hey man of science with your perfect rules of measure
See it's only entertainment
Superficial urgency, posterboard mentality...
Thank you Greg for your two books, screw these "interviewers"
Natural selection is not the only pressure that the theory of biological evolution talks about, but natural selection has been a huge impact on the earth biology

Industialyz3r i hope she ment GOD's Love from the empire strikes first album by BadReligion lol
Gods love was a good song... Oh your talking about GODS Love? HA
Greg was very prudent, wisely and awered he was in an interview to create controversia...
This how how they should have introduced Greg; "And with us today is the lead singer to the greatest band of all time-Bad Religion, Ladies and Gentlemen-- Greg Graffin!"
Greg Graffin US President 2020! Please make it happen!
SubatomicMacroscopicParticleExpansion Best comment ever! 🍻🤘🏻

Our morality clearly cannot be left to our own rationality. If it could, people wouldn't kill other people in cold blood, abuse children, or cheat on their spouses.
What is the music in the beginng of the video!?
It sounds really nice!!!
Does anyone know?
Thanks for future answers!
;D
*****
Thanks for the answer, man. But I know is a Bad Religion song. I just want to know what music is.

It's The Day the Earth Stalled by Bad Religion

Tango down, my friend. Nice shot. You are right. Nice song. Thank you so much.
The world has proven time and time again that without God, it doesn't know what morals are.
Whatever drove them, clearly people cannot be left to their own morality.
Our sins are covered by grace.
i love this guy !!!
I've never gotten into a conversation about who believes more, so I can't really comment on that. Believers are not supposed to quarrel amongst themselves.
I love how Bill quotes Thomas Jefferson, who was a christian.
no ones perfect

In nature things tend to move from order to chaos.
Part II
Believing that god created the primary matter is completely alright for now, so long as you don't think that he is also the driving force behind things that happen today.
There's an analogy I like to use:
You are told that there is a black cat in a dark cave and that you need to find it.
Philosophy is looking for it in the dark, Religion is giving up on looking, merely shouting "I've found it!", Science is using a flashlight.
He is too cool man.
I was speaking of two different scenarios. One involved everyone, when I was speaking about everyone knowing that there is a God. The other involved only the Christian community, when I was speaking about the uniting factor in the Christian religion, despite all of our different denominations.
It always cracks me up how that lady says, "punk rock" like it's a bad word.
He also teaches at UCLA
True, people are going to be people, no matter what religion they follow. What I meant to say was that we all believe in Him, and that is what unites us. No matter what we find to squabble over, we all have faith in Him.
The Day That The Earth Stalled
To be fair, they allowed Graffin to talk quite a lot. They just didn't listen to him.
I'd like to see greg graffin interviewed by a group of intellectual peers. it seems like he's always on talk shows with halfwits. anybody know of interviews / appearances on television or radio he's done with more thoughtful or intelligent hosts?
That's not fear. They're about their own thing, that's all.
The day that the earth stalled from The dissent of man
Well no one is to say who is right or wrong. Science doesn't prove or disprove God or higher powers. Why can't everyone be right in there own sense?
I am glad Greg is such an educated gentleman and a smart man, every damn interview I have seen of these guys is such so full of shit, they are really ignorant. the guy have a PhD in geology, give him at least a little bit of respect, they seem that the only thing they want to do with every person in their show is to make fun of them.
Actually, his PhD is in Zoology / Evolutionary Biology. Geology was one of his two bachelor's degrees as well as his master's.

Greg now teaches Evolution at Cornell.
There’s a podcast called Completely Normal where they talk about Joe Scarborough murdering a former intern.

People are allowed to have different views than you. Don't dislike him just because he's educated and has a significant thesis on science.

A decent interview on American television? Progress? Can it be?
It's so funny, morning talk shows are so full of fluff they're not prepared for an atheist. Greg did a great job carrying himself though, because if that woman said to me she thinks science leads to god i'd say prove it.
Science is punk! I like it
We all have free will.
God is real and He loves you.
God existed long before any of those things. His morality has always been known.
