Bad Religion's Greg Graffin On "Faith Alone," Cautious Optimism for Shows in 2021 and the Election

In 2020, no band would be spared the wrath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Punk icons Bad Religion weren’t going to mope about it. If anything, they took the opportunity to move forward sonically and culturally. The band refunded their fans’ ticket money for their planned tour with Alkaline Trio, but that hardly meant they were wrapping up the year.
This month, author Jim Ruland’s Do What You Want, the official Bad Religion biography, was released, giving insight to one of SoCal punk’s longest-running and vital units. In addition, guitarist Brett Gurewitz produced an alternate version of “Faith Alone” (from 1990’s Against The Grain) with a string arrangement that heightens the song’s poignancy. There’s more music in the pipeline, as well.
Alternative Press got an audience with founding BR member Dr. Greg Graffin to discuss Bad Religion’s role in a pandemic world. Here’s a man who, 30 years ago, wrote a song about the great debate of science versus faith, which resonates harder than it did on its original release. He also reflects on the book and how he’s feeling about humanity and the upcoming election. The good news is that he’s optimistic. That’s probably because he’s saving the unbridled rage for the next song he writes.

I'm from Brazil, and I'm 30 years old, and since 13 I've started studying English because of Bad Religion. I'm so proud I haven't waste my time. It's so satisfying watchin an interview like this. It's like listening to a friend. Thanx, Greg! Thanx Bad Religion.
I am from Russia and have been listening to Bad Religion since 15 years old. Now I am 32 and still love their music.
That's so cool and funny too. Alot of us from the U.S. also have to study English when trying to understand BR and Greg.😉😁
Rock on Brazil. Let's unite!
ratos de porao°°!!
Bad Religion is the reason i play guitar and love Punk Rock music . Definitely my favorite band ...
God, I love him. It's hard to see him age. At first I was a bit shocked, but after watching for a while, he doesn't look too bad. He still looks vibrant, and young in the face. I've looked up to him for the past 25 years. Bad Religion has been my favorite band for a long time. It was awesome how he kept going on with such intensity at he end. Such a serious topic, and they were playing the wrap it up music, and he just kept going. It was so cute and nerdy, and Goddamn is he smart. I wasn't going to comment, but it is a travesty to see only 18 comments on this man's feature video, so I couldn't pass by without word. I'm not sure I'd be the same person in a world without Greg Graffin. "Every one you love leaves a mark on your soul." 🤘
He is a lovely man. Truly a gift to humanity.
❤😌
Only been up for a day or so. :)
This is the exact comment I vaguely wanted to write, except they've been my favorite band for a slightly shorter time. :) It is odd to see Greg age, thankfully though I think part of it in this video is the lighting haha. He looked as vibrant and energetic as ever last time I saw him on stage.
I saw them a year ago on my 50th birthday. I was right up front getting smooshed by hundreds of people, many of them much younger. The energy was insane. They all look amazing and Greg is fit and as intense as usual. I've seen a lot of great shows but this was perhaps the most satisfying.
Punk keeps you young if you let it. Sick of it All is another band of old punks who don't stop.
Greg is at the top of the list of people I admire and respect, and Bad Religion is a the top of my favorite bands. I missed my chance to meet him at the warped tour once, but he was with one of his kids and I didn't want to bother him. No regrets, what can I say to the man that wouldn't sound like a typical superfan anyway? Regardless, Bad Religion and other Epitaph bands were the soundtrack to my youth, and I owe Greg a lot for many of my interest. Reading the lyrics to Bad Religion songs as a teenager is the most glorious rabbit hole of education I've ever jumped in to.
Why would you admire a guy who supports pedo pete?
I've seen Bad Religion live 18 times and it's still amazing to me how they still rock the fuck out for 90 minutes without any signs of slowing down
Im 42, I listen to lots of 90's bands...all the punk, metal.
Man, Bad Religion is a truly amazing band by all means. So many classic albums. Im on the No Control album lately.. as I get older, I enjoy them more
@@asmrbynature3057 The thing that freaks me out is how many of the problems they're railing against still exist in full force today...the world would be a better place if more people listened to Bad Religion!
@@misterderp4566 ...oh yea, no joke!! Bad Religion's songs are so relevant and timeless.. One of a kind :)

You spelled his name wrong dude...it's Craig Grafton
He has I think degree in physics? But anyway at least he was A student in that topic. Red it somewhere
@@ladydawn1973Eternity I thought it was in biology as a result of his interest in evolution.
The DNC can’t even pull for Bernie, what makes you think Greg would even have a chance?
The generic rock & roll background track is really annoying.
Stopped watching because of it
It stops eventually.

why? without rock and roll, punk would never exists
Bad Religion are my first love, even if i didn't started listening to punk rock with them. It's amazing to know how fucking smart Greg is, and not just another singer who didn't finished school.
I named my youngest young after Greg -- Jude Graffin. I couldn't believe my wife was good with it. Happy to see this video and that Greg is doing well.
I read your comment on their 2019 live show!
Well done!
One of the greatest interviews ever made to the unbelievable Professor Graffin. Many thanks.
This is a great interview. Love hearing Greg talk about his nerdy agenda inspiring their music. Speaks so many volumes. Socially conscious music. Bad Religion is true punk rock! ✊🏽
Yeh awesome interview pushing vaccine mandates for half of it. LOL!
I've been watching it since the day you put it out!! Thanks a lot I appreciate it good stuff to learn especially from someone like you.
Thank you for being here with us Mr. Graffin
Someone should tell Greg that Bad Religion DOES actually makes your life complete......Hero for life.
I love Dr. Graffin!
After reading his books I've longed for a chance to attend his lectures. Thanks for the sampling AP and Dr Graffin! Let's hope BR belts out a live streaming set!
Always great to hear Greg’s thoughts on things.
I used to rock Bad Religion in my portable discman nonstop on my snowboard in the 90's and now I am 45 and still listen to their stuff whether on my dirt bike or out my board. The music is so timeless and I still get amped like that kid back in the day..makes me forget that my knees and back hurt and I shouldn't be out there doing what I do, but who gives a damn, right?
GREG YOU ARE A TRUE LIVING LEGEND, I APPRECIATE YOU AND ALL THE MESSAGES YOU HAVE GIVEN US THROUGH OUT THE YEAR'S!!
BAD RELIGION THE BEST BAND IN THE WORLD!!!!
BLESS YOU SINNER'S
Lol not your average rock’n’roll interview for sure !! Love that guy so much !!
that's the reason I love this interview lol
Years ago I studied biology and was a guitarist in a Punkrock band when I first heard of Bad Religion. I became a huge fan of the music and lyrics of Bad Religion and Greg Graffin. I was stunned and fascinated to recognize that he was a biology lecturer. Now, years later, I am a lecturer of biology myself and have published a number of rock CDs. So in a way, I can identify with Greg, albeit he is of course much much bigger than I will ever be.
I have also big big respect for the molecular biologist Dexter Holland from "The Offspring" and the astrophysicist and brilliant guitarist Brian May!!!. Science and Rock'n'Roll should rule the world!
GREG: Don't take my word for it. Go read the latest news for yourself.
ME: (takes Greg's word for it)
Thank you! You are one clever, deep thinking man. I could listen to you for hours
Faith Alone is a time machine song. So relevant now 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
It was AMAZING to see you on Dec 11th 2021!!!!!!! 🖤🤘🏻🖤
Bad religion has been the most important band in my life, it has made me think, it comforted me when i needed it and it made me happy all thought my life. Thank you Greg for being in my life and for giving us music to complement our lives!!!!!!
All, omg i love your songs. I want more.
Been listening to Bad Religion for at least 20 years and it has inspired me in so many occasion. Faith Alone is one of those timeless song.
Bad religion is valued all over the world since a 8 year old I got a hold of a punk o rama 2 and I started collecting many bands from the American punk rock scene and even being 40 years old now I still got no regrets much love from the Netherlands
I think humans will always want to play music and people will want to watch people perform music. I will never stop wanting to play or perform and naturally influencing the next generation of performers. The performer will never stop performing
Lol all the people confused that he's telling you to go vote and not for Trump never really understood what this band was fighting for in the first place
The issue is that Biden/Obama was the reason for Trump... I Biden's foreign politics are to the right of Trumps and his Crime bill did not well either. Kamala is horrible too. The first step act helped tho.. (not courtsey of Biden). Bernie/Gabbard was something.... Biden nope.
Seeing all those "smart" punk bands going full establishment mode and not seeing that Orange Man is the Symptom not the cause makes me sick.
@@TechEpiphany i would put my dick in a toaster to have the pride of calling my president gabbard. bernie though i disagree with him he is authentic. how did punk go from libertarian to liberal to hard left ? im a Libertarian with classical liberal values that they used to say leans left.... the democratic party has moved so far from its people and some of the greatest minds wont admit it. its bushes fault that we have what we have now. but when i listen 90's punk i do not hear liberal i hear libertarian
@@CC-jh1vm ok buddy what do you call, do what you want just dont do it around me. we do as we please! philosophical anarchy stems from the same values as libertarian-ism. Freedom, you think its about some chaotic socialist dream huh?
go listen again to albums before BUSH.
just listen to nofx ribbed, or bad religion recipe for hate and tell me its not liberty first.
but here we are in a post bush world.
its fine man.. if youre not going to reply. i was there. listen to all the songs written during the Clinton era. maybe punks radical wing was that violent socialist anarcho punk but most fat/epa bands were liberty first philosophy which is pretty dam close to libertarian-ism. im not talking about pro capitalism or social liberalism either
i just read it again you need to look up what libertarian actually means. punk always was right wing when it came to government. left on social issues...
and here i go defending a trivial thing. when i said it was right wing, i mean punk in the 90's stood for less government and more social programs ran through communities not federal government and state bureaucracy.
Awesome!!! Thanx a lot Greg Graffin. This is pretty wild I've been playing my guitar but not to much orchestra right..
Love you Greg. You were an instrumental inspiration to me growing up. I miss live music so fucking much!!!
Love Greg, so eloquent
Listened to Bad Religion in my early youth :) Still listening :)
"Stranger than fiction", "Infected", these are not only genius masterpieces but they started sounding like they were written in the year 2-2-
What a legend. I love Greg and br
What a legend
God, I love Bad Religion and Greg Graffin. My favorite band since I was 12 years old.
Love you, guys! ❤
Coincidentially around the same time I started liking them.
Saw them on Saturday night live promoting the Stranger than Fiction Album. Went to my local small town walmart looking for a new cd (so much edited crap, very limited select) Saw theirs. What luck! Picked it up and the rest is history.
Im 40 now. Damn time flies!!
All Hail Graffin! Such a legend.
Nice to see you Greg, always healthy for you my idol 🤘
Happy birthday, doc!
one of this days i heard the best coment about this guy: the only guy that can play punk rock with a polo shirt!! ah ah
respect from a fan over 20 years til now
The whole point is listening to music live is to feel the music, heart pumping, sweaty, and temporary loss of hearing etc. Might as well watch the dvd if one listens via streaming.
Greg is the best.
I'd actually love to hear an album's worth of reworking like Faith Alone, since we're in lockdown and all.
Then right back to super fast punk plz :)
I love this man
This dude has to be one of the smartest guys alive 🙌
Frogger Baby!!! There are many and will go down as my favorite punk or skate punk band. Them with along with X just were such a part of The LA Punk scene.
dude i was reading the description and in the first line "In 2020, no band would be spared the wrath of the COVID-19 pandemic." and instantly thought that one of them had died. Thank god they live on to rock.
Bad Religion ... discovered them with Crazy Taxi and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1 or 2 : Them and Us & 20 in 2010 & YOU ... it was around 1998/2000 when I was 12y/o ... since... I love this band so much... this guys are Legend ! RESPECT !
I think it was Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2... I always chose "You" while playing Rodney Mullen...
The song is amazing
Greg is the best. You can't change my mind.
Been listening to them since the early 90s
My hero.
I wear black jeans cause of Greg at Warped one year, and I wasn't even there! A fave timeless song is Tiny Voices(STF is a timeless album though). Even after years of not listening to them, Greg is an inspiration and seems an awesome fellow.
I swear just before I got to your comment I thought “Tiny Voices probably has the most beautifully poetic lyrics and powerful message of any BR song and it doesn’t get the credit it deserves”. Glad I’m not the only one who was blown away by that song when I heard it as a young teen.
I've been saying this for years!! As a kid from a small town in Central Virginia, there's no way I would be able to see bands at awesome venues, and would have paid the price of a ticket to see it. The technology is here to do it, Fat Mike just did it from his house, Post Malone did the Nirvana cover from his place.
he went from 40 to 70 in just a couple of years
Is there another version of the interview with lower background noise? After so many years of rock and roll, my ears hurt my mind. Tinnitus is real hell
It finally ended after 5 minutes .. so ridiculous
I think we're getting closer to what you're describing every day. Low level of consciousness among the masses has always been an obstacle but that is starting to change. Call me an optimist!
Do me a favor: Tell ANYONE that you are an anarchist (of ANY kind; Marxist or Libertarian) and see what happens. Then tell me that the "low level of consciousness" is starting to change.
@@SirJoelsuf1 Political anarchy, as you imagine it, isn't the answer. If you look at the history of China, you'll realize that all political systems as we know them have been tried and have always failed. Why? Humanity! It is always 2 steps forward, one step back. The vaccines were a disaster. They caused more harm than good in many cases and do not prevent transmission at all whatsoever. Protection is marginal at best. In my case, I got auto immune encephalitis from GG's beloved vaccines. Good luck with your 'enlightenment' though from this Christian hating, science loving, flip flopping fake of a man.
Saw these guys open up for FEAR in the summer of 1982 at the Whiskey. Greg was mesmerizing, the way he switched from rage to quirky all while going full tilt.
This was also the time when there was still menace in the air. A girl with long blond hair was in front of me when two other girls with striped buzzcuts pushed up behind her and proceeded to set her hair on fire with a lighter. I tried to blow it out and they punched me in the chest and said "knock it off" Blonde girl turned around and then they started punching her while saying "get out of here hippie"
Yeah those were the days 😆
Damn! Greg has lost a lot of weight!
I noticed this too.. I’m thinking it is possible he’s the last comer to the new leaner meaner BR member model ha ..
Greg goes up and down weight-wise. But live he never looks heavy
It's the c-word but kept a secret so far.
honestly I was little worried because of this lost of weight
If there's one thing I love hearing Greg Graffin talk about it's lucrative business models.
ie. Government

The Richness Creates Poverty Because Fear of Death, When We Already Know that we Die. Once We Understand Peace, There'll Be No More Fear to Fight but Living It.
I first got into bad Religion when I got my hands on a copy of Taylor Steele's momentum Surf video, which I think was in '91 so I was 10 years old. Pennywise and Bad Religion pretty much had most of their music on that tape. To some up their music in one word...RAD! No control and suffer are the best albums hands down.
The BEST bad Religion sone ever 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
When did Bruce Willis join Bad Religion?
But watching a streaming show just isn't the same experience as dancing, experiencing the community and the immediacy of the music. It isn't just about business models, live shows are essential to punk rock culture.
Bad Religion shows are usually put up on the internet the day or two after.
Guys its christmas next month!! Time to play ‚O Come Emmanuel‘ on repeat!
People change, people get old, things die off... Life is crazy, if the guy changed, he changed.. so what if he looks like he maintains his lawn everyday in a retirement community.. one day where all gonna slow down and look the same way.. just respect what he did in the past and present, basically Greg does what he wants 🤙🤘
Playing that ridiculous music in the background for the first 5 minutes almost made me shut it off .. nice going AP ....Pfft..

Nice interview, it was great to catch up with Greg Graffin in 2020. I wonder if he looks so frail because of the withdrawal of live concerts all musicians are going through these days, due to the pandemic...
As usual, it was a joy to listen to a person so well pondered, cautious and articulate, characteristics that you don't always associate to punk rock musicians... For example, what he says about the new streaming models that will cohabitate with traditional gigs when the lockdown is over... there's something there.
I think he makes a mistake when he says that a virus-host relation is "symbiotic". Symbiotic is a relation in which both parts are benefited. A virus deteriorates and even kills the host (and the host tries to kill the virus in return), so I think the term in this case was "parasitic", rather. Probably a simple slip of the tongue, that I wouldn't bother to mention with other interviewee, but I know it wouldn't be bad received by someone who, precisely, denounces our "Age Of Unreason" :)
