I love that Greg Graffin provides a model for how a super legit punk rocker can age with dignity. For those of us who didn't succumb to heroin addiction in our late 20's, or later suicide (despite what may have been our best attempts) and now find ourselves with natural gray hair, a small collection of polo shirts, and playing unplugged more often than not. And how he lives his theory that punk rock is form of folk music. Such an intellectual giant of the movement.
I'm a punk rocker in my late twenties and I already have grey hair. I overcame my addiction and my suicidal thoughts and I listen to folk/blues/bluegrass too lol
Playing bad religion for someone who never heard them on a long trip to a jobsite in 93? Right when recipe for hate came out and after hearing kerosene and other songs he said " it's like folk music to punk rock " absolutely Bryant wherever you are today.
Good point. Both folk/blues/country and punk are pretty much about stripping away unnecessary things to get straight to the core. It's bare, raw, intimate and direct. Which I noticed most of my favourite music is. While yes, I can be impressed with, for example, big band jazz that's a full-fledged orchestra, I still prefer the intimacy of a small quartet, trio or even just a bass and a piano (Jazz På Svenska by Jan Johansson. Instrumental jazz-version of swedish folk songs. Highly recommend).
Greg Graffin always liked that kind of music. When he was just a kid in 1992 (Along the Way VHS video if i'm not mistaken) he answered an interview stating that he used to listen polka and country music, and those songs influenced him to reach his own style. his taste in music never avoided him from writing and composing many of most important masterpieces of punk rock history
It's interesting all of the Bad Religion fans who are surprised by his music taste. He's said plenty of times that the inspiration for Bad Religion is bluegrass. You can hear it within every song in the melodies, harmonies, etc. It's like he took those artists and brought it into punk rock. Whether you like those artists or not, they are the reason you like BR's sound so much more than any other punk band.
Professor Graffin, not sure if you'll ever see this but I want you to know that you inspired (along with many other artists...) to start writing music and I'll always be thankful for this).. your love for Hank III brings tears to my heart.
What a dude. You can hear a lot of his songwriting in those old country folky songs. Not sure I'd recognise him if I saw him walking about though. He looks a lot less like better call saul these days.
He is an incredible man. I got to meet him with my mum (who is a punk rocker) when on the way to see them. Was more than happy to take photos and have a chat with us.
When I met him, I was a bungled mess lol. Couldn't get many words out, so much to say. Was able to tell him how he'd changed my life and made a huge impact on my world view though, and he was thankful and laughed at my awkwardness.
If I may, allow me to recommend Hank Williams’ complete demo compilation. I believe it is called Alone With His Guitar. To me, once they started over producing his songs, a little magic was lost. But his demos captures the energy, emotion and rawness that make for a beautiful album.
"I think of myself as a prolific artist and not everything is that great" I'd really like to hear what he thinks is not that great within his body of work. I love pretty much everything he's done from the not-so-successful bad religion albums to his country stuff and American Lesion.
Greg YOU do not have to worry about the music you have made. You are a huge nail in the history of Rock and Roll in the best most stand up for your right and true belief in the birth of Generation X Punk Rock. So. Cal Punk too feeding the birth of extreme sports. Skateboarding vertical half pipes and pools, short board surfing, snowboarding and more. You me and many others are the old people never knowing what we will become. We may now have careers and be fathers/mothers with bills a house and all BUT STILL PUNK AND INTO PUNK ROCK! Succeeding where the hippies failed standing behind our thought of right and truth. Not the propaganda of the MSN and mob rules. Feel proud and know your work will be stoked by many long after you are gone too. Great music you have made THANK YOU AND BAD RELIGION honestly. Professor Punk
As the sole member who has been on every Bad Religion release--not even Brett Guerwitz couldn't make it without a seven-year estrangement--Professor Graffin has been pontificating, ranting, raving. He has showed us all timeless storytelling
found that same Watson Family album at the same Amoeba about 10 years ago. on wax for a dollar. had to purchase the digital download on iTunes because i couldn't find a cd.
one of the most inteligents guy that I ever heard, calm, direct, humble, cool... a proper gentleman!! bad religion its one of my fav bands of all time!!!
While after watching this interview this explains a lot why can hear the country influence in his singing I thought it was just all in my head but I was pretty on the dot about it
Greg Graffin has a beautiful voice , awesome harmonies , God gave him something special so great to communicate a perfect message to think and reflect about how to make this world a better place whit justice , peace , equality , love and prosperity emotional spiritual a really great Punk Rock Musical mission , God bless Greg graffin Always
At Uni, Indeed I always had the urge to ask professors and PhD's what was in their bag. Surely that is the most interesting thing these people can tell me!
Anyone out there that likes Hank Williams and/or Doc Watson please do me a favor. Go look up and spend some time with Roscoe Holcomb. His voice may be off-putting at first, but give it a few songs to grow on you. The man made some of the most amazingly authentic music ever put to tape.
Big influence in my early days. So many shit talk Fiction album. Nah, its a brilliant album. Id love to suck that good and memories with that album and Ive seen BR twice, sooo awesome. Ppl get older. Life. Im kinda glad cuz my 40s are better then my 20s and my 20s were great.
I worked at a restaurant where I had to wait on people like Britney Spears and Hillary Duff, but Greg Graffin was by far the meanest “celebrity” I ever had the displeasure of serving. It was kinda funny cuz he just came off as a cranky old man, but it does make it hard to really buy this jovial grandpa/professor thing he’s doing here.
0:05 - notice how Greg's unplugged voice sounds a lot like Gorden Lightfoot? (And I would NEVER compare "How Could Hell Be Any Worse", "Suffer", "No Control" or even "Into the Unknown" to Lightfoot!)
I love that Greg Graffin provides a model for how a super legit punk rocker can age with dignity. I'm a punk rocker in my late twenties and I already have grey hair. I overcame my addiction and my suicidal thoughts and I listen to folk/blues/bluegrass too lol
I like that, punk is definitely a kind of folk music
Playing bad religion for someone who never heard them on a long trip to a jobsite in 93? Right when recipe for hate came out and after hearing kerosene and other songs he said " it's like folk music to punk rock " absolutely Bryant wherever you are today.
Got to check out those artists he picked
Good point.
Both folk/blues/country and punk are pretty much about stripping away unnecessary things to get straight to the core.

When you expect Greg to pull out a Clash record in stead he pulls out his big fat HANK WILLIAMS 4 DISK SET.
Yeah.. you don't know what Punk is..
so predictably unpredicted
TBH, I think he did it because this was promo for his folk album.
Dad Religion
lol the best
PUNK IS DAD
Bald Religion
_How Could Healthcare be Any Worse?_
insomniac Jajajajajaja I’m dead
Words alone can't express how much I admire Greg Graffin. I would love to check out the Stephen Stills and Doc Watson album.
The Stills album is one of the best albums you'll ever come across. Good country, good rock, and good everything between.
It's brilliant!!
First i've heard of Stills but he sounds amazing. Hope you had the pleasure of listening to Doc Watson since, he's the most under rated musician ever
I love his voice, it's matured and grown richer. I gotta get his recent releases.
I love this guy. Greg is awesome.
My favorite Punk frontman for my favorite Punk band
Greg Graffin For President....of the world.

I love my dad but I want Greg Graffin to be my father
I don't like my dad and I want Greg to be my father
Archie Lol, you are everywhere when it comes to BR or Greg Graffin. That's awesome.
I don't have a dad and I want Greg to be my mother.
Wake up in the morning, check my phone "oh a video with Greg Graffin". Good way to start the day.
Fucking clicked so quick.
Same, and it's been a while since I listened to Bad Religion
"Can we release this video after Christmas?" /sad puppy eyes/
Just when i thought i couldn’t love this amazing man anymore, he goes and pulls Hank out of his bag.
I can't get over how personable and cool he is.
awesome seeing Doc Watson getting some love
Jared Perkins Greg should play at Merlefest 2017
As a guy who played in punk rock bands for 20 years and now I have started a old school country band I get it !!! Rock on brother
A Legend!
Professor Graffin, not sure if you'll ever see this but I want you to know that you inspired (along with many other artists...) to start writing music and I'll always be thankful for this).. your love for Hank III brings tears to my heart.

He is an incredible man. I got to meet him with my mum (who is a punk rocker) when on the way to see them. Was more than happy to take photos and have a chat with us.
met him once too. Very gracious and friendly. Emailed him once too at his ucla address and he replied.
MrNatego1 oh shit, really?!
@@piaanna9067 Yup! He was gracious. I wish I could find that email!
When I met him, I was a bungled mess lol. Couldn't get many words out, so much to say. Was able to tell him how he'd changed my life and made a huge impact on my world view though, and he was thankful and laughed at my awkwardness.
MrNatego1 yep I was the same. Like tripping over my words etc and he was so nice. Got a photo with him and Jay and another with Greg H

Love that album
Id say probably listen to any of the demos on you tube that never made it onto their albums.
I've been listening to Doc and Merle Watson since I can remember.
Holy shit! Greg Graffin continues to amaze me
the 3+ hour bad religion compilation is one of my most played albums.
I really genuinely love Dr G.
One of my favorite singers talking about one of my favorite singers! Doc Watson rules
0:16 When you hear Bad Religion is making an album soon.
Greg is getting old man, crazy to think about a world without bad religion and greg. Cant wait to see them again next month in Amsterdam.
I'm gonna buy those myself and do reviews! Greg has damn good taste!

My grandpa introduced me to Doc Watson when I was 12 after I started playing guitar. Love his stuff
Yep, this is my favorite one so far.

Good to see someone from a punk band not listening to just punk.
That's usually how it goes...
Greg and many others put me back together when i felt scattered
im really surprised not one punk album
my guess is because he was promoting his folk album
I went out and bought that Stephen Stills album immediately after I watched this...
Only took him half a century to buy some Hank Williams.
Manassas is an incredible album! Underrated group for sure
Never met him, but absolutely sure he's the nicest guy
one of the most inteligents guy that I ever heard, calm, direct, humble, cool... a proper gentleman!! bad religion its one of my fav bands of all time!!!
0:29 handshakes are nothing but a subtle "fuck you"
Haha, good spotting, I often wondered how many hands BR have shaken!
So exciting , I learned a lot 😬
Greg Graffin is probably the coolest person on earth.
P.S. I always knew american punk rock is just oldtime country with distortion :)
fuck...Bad Religion is one of my all time fave bands! Phenomenal lyrics and ooo's n ahhh's.
While after watching this interview this explains a lot why can hear the country influence in his singing I thought it was just all in my head but I was pretty on the dot about it

Greg already did 3 solo albums of country and folk. American lesion (1997), Cold as the Clay (2006) and Millport (2017)
You might wanna give Millport a listen 😉
I LOVE GREG GRAFFIN💚
I fucking love Greg Graffin
For anyone still watching, Greg wrote an awesome book called Anarchy Evolution, check it out
I have the cleanest copy of that Manassas on vinyl. It's wonderful.

Doc Watson!
Did he just give himself props for being a prolific artist like Hank Williams?
Rich Moreno I would call him that though

im going for a walk now!
My top picks for Bad Religion would be either between No Control,Stranger Than Fiction or The Gray Race

No worries, I'll keep watching. This one restored my faith.
The one with Sebitchtian Bach is pretty hilarious
I've liked pretty much every episode I've watched. Love being turned on to new music.
What makes this one good but not the others?
Does /mu/ influence what gets put on the top of the record shelves?
David Sosebee sadly yes, cuz /mu/core fucking sucks tbh
I worked at a restaurant where I had to wait on people like Britney Spears and Hillary Duff, but Greg Graffin was by far the meanest “celebrity” I ever had the displeasure of serving. It was kinda funny cuz he just came off as a cranky old man, but it does make it hard to really buy this jovial grandpa/professor thing he’s doing here.
What did he say to you? Was he too arrogant?

Brilliant. ^_^

The Manassas record isn't hard to find, Hell, it's on Spotify.
He likes Doc Watson too? Yes!
My uncle was also the one that helped me get into Doc. Gave me an older book of tabs.
My favorite punk singer turned into Bernie Sanders
0:05 - notice how Greg's unplugged voice sounds a lot like Gorden Lightfoot? (And I would NEVER compare "How Could Hell Be Any Worse", "Suffer", "No Control" or even "Into the Unknown" to Lightfoot!)
I want to see Flatbush Zombies on this!
Symone S. dude yes!!!!
