I interviewed John Cooper Clarke for a local radio station just before his winter 2010 UK tour (at his warm up show). I was a bit apprehensive, but he was a great guy, and when I said I had to leave to catch the last train, he and his manager gave me a lift to the train station. Thanks John!
JCC is a National Treasure. He is a really warm, gentle and genuine guy. I've had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and he is one of the most engaging people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting.
I met by accident outside of my local theatre he was standing outside trying to get in! and I chatted to him and your right he is a very genuine person..that's why he appeals to everyone. and the gig that night everyone could not stop laughing he is a funny guy.
I went to a party in Beasley Street in the 70s. Anyway maybe it wasn't Beasley Street but is was in Salford well maybe it wasn't Salford. Could have been Chorlton-cum-Hardley. Story of my life at that time. It was in a filthy squat before they were called squats. Anyway it was another ten years before I heard Beasley Street but I knew that party was in it somewhere. It took me another 30 years to work out what crocodile skis are. Gift that never stops giving that poem. Thanks John.
I first came across JCC when we studied his poems for GCSEs: I Wanna Be Yours and Things Can Only Get Worse. One of only a few worthwhile things school ever taught me; that and being introduced to H.R Giger.
I saw him perform live in 1977 . I was a convert straightaway . Beasley Street is my fav JCC poem and Desolation Row is my fav Dylan composition - so it was a good comparison .
JCC is one of the best British artists of all time, not just funny In fact hes hilarious but he can also be very dark and dare I say it deep, profound.
JCC is a top bloke, I once saw him performing a set at the Laugharne festival with what I thought was a pint of water, when I was getting myself a drink later on I mentioned to the person on the bar about not having seen him perform without alcohol and they showed me the bottle of gin that he had a pint out of. He was performing while drinking a pint of gin.
I was a teenage girl from up North living in a down trodden council housing estate watching TOGWT with a friend and her Dad , and thought *uck that's how I feel , angry, disenfranchised , even if I sit my exams I won't get a good job whatever I do.
Beasley Street was the most accurate reflection of my life, my neighbourhood and the people by whom I was surrounded. John was the nearest thing to Northern soul in poetry. Also incredibly funny. John, lads like me worshipped you. Never, ever stop.
What I like about JCC is that he lives in Colchester which is the most southern of towns. Basically does not conform to the myth of Manchester; people are people just don't believe the hype.
my wife is a good safe driver .. but when work gave her a hire car >> she knocked the crap out of it.. handbrake turns.. you name it .. she did it. When i asked her why .. she replied .. "like John said.. its a hire car baby"

His loquacity knows no bounds. His words have jumped the fence of tradition and entered a new area of expressivity.
He really isn't.
One trick pony
first saw JCC in a gig with Elvis Costello, his greatest hits are played often in our house. The Man is brilliant!
Saw the great JCC for the first time live last night. Incredible. thank god I saw him while I had the chance. Total original., brilliant, hilarious

I met JCC at a small gig in Nottingham and managed to have a five minute chat, really easy going chilled out guy.

Can't even get her facts right. Joy Division started out supporting HIM!
She was about 4 in 1989?. Useless press. We know JCC and known him from the 70's......
Nah she was knocking about MCR in '89. Bop Mag I think...
Dylan? Really? JCC is a British masterpiece. Some (small) comparison with Dylan in relation to social issues and injustices, I guess.
johnathan richmond..! ffs....
Clarke has talent and you Kermode DON'T !
