I saw the mountain crumble down
    I saw colossus in flames
    I heard the ocean draining
Nothing that I could ever tame
Off with my head, come down the line
I have the right to decide
I'll bring this light, as is the sky
    Altered minds they criticize
    Unrest within your flesh
How can we stop this pollution?
    Altering trouble, you cannot fix
Envy of others never makes me rich
All my heroes, they're all dead
    I remain here inside my
We have heard the chimes at midnight
    Into the void I go
Will I ever see your face again
Or will blank be all I know
    Arriving inside
    Ire hurts a life
And the darkness here is grim
    But it found us, surrounded
Lead me deep into the canyon
You push your guidance in the wrong hands
    Feet ungrounded, giving your best
Now take your gold into silence
You take a stand, bracing yourself
For this cold is never ending
We have heard the chimes at midnight
    Into the void I go
Will I ever see your face again
Or will blank be all I know
    Arriving inside

"Chimes at Midnight" (1965) ; adapted by Orson Welles masterpiece from William Shakespeare's 'Henry IV'. Welles' greatest film. One of the greatest battle sequences ever captured on celluloid, some of the finest performances of Shakespearean verse on screen, but sadly long overdue for wide distribution.
So this is a metal song inspired by the film/novel. The riffs is great, the lyrics are quite representative. I think that was cool enough for me. Great job Mastodon !

Guys. If old Mastodon is where your loyalties lie, then listen to old Mastodon. It's ok. But don't shit on them for not wanting to release the same album over and over and over again. Would you not want to find new ways to express yourselves? And say they've decided to simplify their sound as means of moving more albums and generating more revenue (which I doubt is the sole motivating factor). Operating a band the size of Mastodon is very, very expensive...can you blame the for wanting to do more than simply break even at this point in their careers? They've worked HARD...they deserve to enjoy some of the perks of being in a high-profile band. Plus they have families to support, etc. God, you people need to grow up!

    • @robacdc1977

right? I've never understood people wanting the same album over and over in the same style...I get the reverence for the classic shit, but...I want to hear a band freak out and do something totally out of their box and take a chance!!! Even if it fails, you fuckin went for it!!...I thought emporer of sand was one of their best...vocals wise, definitely...and that's not just studio techniques, that's them getting better at singing...I saw them live and they were killin...even if they empoyed pitch correction or whatever, that doesn't bother me...they are just amazing...and getting better as they go...

To me this is dumb to do regardless of what it is. It could be Dr. Who or Star Wars or Football or a Ferrari and it's still dumb. Unless MLP really does define you best as a human in which case I'm sorry, but that really would be an obsession. Ok i need to say this : I love Mastodon and I listen to them since the Leviathan era. The fact that I truly admire is that they evolve in each album. They don't care what we wanna hear. They write their music in order to express their inner self , not to please their fans. And that's what artists do. So I 'm glad they made a new album once again . They are happy, expressing their selves and I am happy, because I admire them and I feel thankfull for all the good music they made for us. So, the new album will be another typical Mastodon album : It will be unique.

Mastodon is still the best viking-rock sounding band. The powerful melody and insightful lyricism of their songs never fail to present a musical journey of epic proportions. They always manage to give their fans a very solid album and this practice is well-preserved in their latest offering.

This track is insanely awesome! It's got that spooky feel at the intro and outro kinda reminding me of Megalodon? Then the lyrics and the riffs and just everything about it is fantastic!

    Bassist Troy Sanders
"We don’t consider ourselves a metal band. We recognize there is a lot of metal in us, but we also want to believe we have a lot of rock 'n' roll in us, and we have a lot of progressive rock in us, we have bits and pieces of thrash and punk, and psychedelic-ness sprinkled throughout. A lot of times for me personally, just having the metal tag itself seems kind of limiting on us because we have such an appreciation for all styles of music and we like to incorporate bits and pieces of those in to our songs. But we also recognize all the different sub-genres and the millions of times people say, "Oh, what do they sound like?" and you say something, I understand that. But, it doesn’t affect how we create anything at all."

They did it again, amazin songs so far, i dont get why there is so many haters, many of those negatives comments people are making just shows me how small minds or tight asses people can be. But everybody has the right to express their opinions, for me every single album of mastodon is amazin, its like a trip, goes through never ending trance, those who really get this music i know will love this new shit and will again blow their head off. Peace.

Bands change, they evolve, if they lose fans along the way; that's okay imo. Mastodon are one of the most meticulous and talented metal bands on the scene and it's not fair to lay claim to that "old" Mastodon sound. I love the direction they're heading in and I'll be supporting them all the way. Same goes for Opeth. You can only growl nonsense so long before the more polished musician springs forth. Double fuck yes for 'Chimes at Midnight'. Non-ironic \m/ all the way!

Who else is really happy the band agreed with Hinds singing the chorus? You’d expect that beautiful part of the song would be sung by Brann but they really let Hinds do his thing and he fuckin delivered
