Finding a Shoebox of Vintage Sports Cards at an Estate Sale- You've GOT to See What's Inside!!

- Опубліковано 30 січ 2023
- Every vintage sports card collector dreams of walking up to a Estate Sale and finding a shoebox full of vintage cards. The dream is to find Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Sandy Koufax cards. Every once in a while we hear about something like that happening, but NEVER do we think it will happen to someone we know. In early 2023, this is EXACTLY what happened to my Dad. He stumbled across a box of vintage cards, in excellent condition, in a shoebox. He purchased the cards and asked me to come over and go through them with him. Needless to say, the two hours of us discovering what was inside, was nothing short of remarkable.
This is a memory that I'll never forget, and I was lucky enough to capture it on camera. I hope you enjoy this video and the expressions of us finding Hall of Fame players over and over.

No amount of money can compare with spending time with your dad. Very special. Nice find !
It was really fun for sure.
Richard is Priceless.
Love the Father/Son bonding over the find. Absolutely amazing haul. We all would love to see how they graded, and current “graded” values. Hope to see a follow up video.
I am planning on doing a follow up video that shows off some of the grades. Several of them are just starting to come back from PSA.
Best part of the video is sharing the time with your dad. My father and I enjoyed the hobby together until he passed away a year ago. Then I started my UA-cam channel to share my collection with everyone
I appreciate that so much. I totally agree. I'm so lucky to still be able to share these sorts of things with my Dad. I will cherish this video for many years.
This was so fun to watch. My dad is 82 and when he was a kid had cards from the 50's in a shoebox (including the famous '52 Mantle). Unfortunately, his dad threw the box away. I would love to have had a moment like this with him, looking through what he had.
I'm super lucky to still get to enjoy moments like this with my Dad. No doubt.
So fun to experience your joy through the video! I also want to say how great it is to watch you experience the joy with your dad! Keep up the great content!
Thanks so much. That was an incredible afternoon. So much fun, we were so excited!!
That is every collector's dream, thought that was something that no longer exists! That was really cool, appreciate you recording and sharing it! Congrats to you dad!!!
Thanks for the kind words. I was racing over to check out the cards and then something inside of me said that I needed to set up my camera and record it. I'm so glad that I did, because it is so fun to have gotten to share it with everyone. Our reactions are so authentic as we're pulling HOFer after HOFer. A really fun experience.
What a great find and what a wonderful moment to experience with your dad. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Thank YOU for taking the time to watch.
Amazing find and some really cool cards (and in nice shape too!). Congrats to your dad.
It was a lot of fun going through them together. Having no idea which card was next...I commented to him at one point, it was like opening packs of cards from that era. Incredible.
What dreams are made of! Nice find!! Thanks for sharing. 58 Topps is one of my favorite sets. It's just such a classic look with the vibrant backgrounds and old school poses. Love it!
1958 set is an awesome one. Totally agree. I really love the 1952-1958 sets. Vintage stuff is so cool.
I have been enjoying your channel and especially this video! Thank you for sharing the joy and excitement that you and your Dad experienced with his terrific find!
That means a lot to me, thank you. I really appreciate you taking the time to leave this comment. 🙏🏼
Wow incredible! Loved the whole video from the back story to seeing the vintage beauties! Thanks for sharing the experience!
Appreciate the kind words. I wasn't sure how much of the back story people would want. I tried to include enough that it would be interesting, but not so much that it took away from seeing the cards. Thanks for the kind feedback and thanks for watching.
WOW! What a fantastic & amazing! Happy your dad knows how rare it is to find something like that box! Wonderful video with great cards & family. Doesn't get any better! Congrats to the family! Thanks for the video!
Much love, stay safe, & enjoy cardboard!
Appreciate all of the kind words. Thank you!! It was a lot of fun going through those together!!
Thanks for sharing! Thats something else. What a find!!!
It was a crazy find and a super fun memory.
I love moments like these. Estate sales are great ways to find amazing cards.
Me too. That's why I had to capture it to share with everyone. So much fun hearing about stuff like this let alone being there for it!!
Such a fun video...awesome to see you with your Dad! Great job!
It was a lot of fun!! Thanks so much for watching and commenting!!
A very rare find indeed. Some very nice cards there. Can’t believe the conditions on those 62 cards , just incredible. Awesome way to spend quality time with your dad. Thanks for sharing this very nice video.
I always appreciate your comments- you're very kind. It was a really fun experience, and I am glad I was able to capture it on video to share with everyone. Thanks for your continued support!! :-)
Great video of you and your dad wish my dad was still here to share
So awesome you got to share this with your dad. Hope to share the love of this hobby with my children someday.
I'm very lucky, no doubt about it. Sharing interests with kids and parents is the best.
Awesome find. Congratulations. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks for watching and commenting. It was a lot of fun going through it and I was glad I was able to share it with everyone!!
Great video! Reminds me of when I went through cards with my boys. Lots of fun! Seeing their reactions on favorite players was priceless! Super find! Thanks for sharing!
Making memories is the best!!
How cool to not only be in on this find but get to share in the experience with your pops. These cards are really gonna mean something to you and yours one day. I sure ain’t telling you what to do in a negative way but I’d definitely consider saving all these. God bless and thank you for sharing.
No doubt about it. And going through the cards with my pops was so amazing.
@@MidLifeCards I’ll bet! I have been doing UA-cam for a few years and the biggest reason was a moving calendar if you will that I or my kids can go back and watch. About 2 years ago I took my daughter on a trip across America for a whole month. Just me and her little crazy 13 year old self. I uploaded so much of it up on UA-cam. I find myself multiple times a month up late at night re watching and reliving those moments. Happy I saved them to UA-cam. Stay blessed sir 🙏 Enjoy those moments.
@@jimmygunz6762 That’s so awesome. Thanks for sharing…I love that story. I’m a blessed man, and sometimes capturing it is a great way to remind ourselves. 🙏🏼
So awesome you got to share that with your dad. Great video. Happy for you both.
It was a really fun day. I'm glad I captured it on video to enjoy for years. Very memorable afternoon.
What a find. Incredible is not the word for this find.
I totally agree. I'm so glad I was able to share it with everyone!!
Man that was an amazing find and the fact of you and your Dad getting to sit down at a table and search them is priceless. Great video 👍 🤝
Totally agree. I'm lucky to have shared that experience with my Dad.
This is so awesome and cool you spent the time to enjoy it with your pops.
For sure. A ton of fun!!
New subscriber here. Absolutely what we all dream about. Thanks for sharing and awesome having your dad to share it with you. all the best, Ronnie
Thanks Ronnie!! Truly what dreams are made of. Appreciate you watching and commenting. I’m so lucky to have experienced that with my Dad. I’ll always remember that day. Glad I could share it with everyone.
I loved walking through this with you two. Thank you. Looking forward to getting a box too.
Thanks so much. We had so much fun that day. A very special memory.
Awesome find and even better video with you and your dad. Congrats on the find.
Appreciate it. Also appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment.
Great video! Thanks for sharing the joy. Too cool!
I appreciate you watching. It was a lot of fun.
Great video, reminds me of when I looked through my dads 60-62 cards. If you want to see the video, it’s called my origin story video. Love the Berra, Aaron and mantle cards the most! Thanks for sharing!!!
Amazing find! Congrats to your dad! Thanks for sharing!
Appreciate you watching and commenting. We had a fun day.
How awesome man!!! Good enough to happen but with your dad is priceless. Thanks for sharing.
It was a super fun day. Thanks so much for watching.
great video just found you great sharing the moments if we only knew many years ago I had some of these in my bike spokes daaa thanks for sharing
Appreciate it. I think a lot of kids had them in their bike spokes. You weren't alone.
This was an amazing experience!! Thank you for sharing & I love your videos!!
Appreciate that so much. He sent several of those cards in for grading to PSA. I'm doing a follow up video on it soon.
Just played golf with your pops at Bradshaw. On one hole we got to talking about cards so I asked him if he went to the National. His eyes lit up as he asked me back “did I go to the National”?, as he’s pulling out his phone to show me pics. Immediately I’m like, oh wow, nice card. Another nice card. Card after card turns out to be bucket listers. About the 5th or 6th card I’m recognizing this collection. Said I felt like I just watched this on UA-cam. He said my son has a channel. I said is it Midlife cards? Yes, that’s my son. Anyway, small world. I enjoyed my morning with your dad and his friend Allen. It was a pleasure hearing his story. He left me with the recommendation of this estate pickup video
That's awesome. He called me and told me about the chance meeting. Very cool!! He's a great guy...glad you two got to play a few holes together!!
Amazing find !!! Yes, we all dream of, finding vintage!!
Still can’t believe it happened.
What a find!!!!! Definitely made some memories on that one, really enjoy your videos brother especially with your father✊✊✊✊👏
Appreciate it. Super fun when I get him in there with me. I'm going to try and start having him share his top pickups at the card shows he attends with me. He's my wingman. Or, maybe I'm his. :-)
Wow incredible loved watching you and your Dad really something special I can’t stop looking for estate sales lol Thank you for sharing
It was such a fun day. He just got some of those cards back from PSA. I have a follow up video coming out on it soon.
How cool to share that experience with your dad - epic find! I hope those special cards will grade well for you, and that you enjoy them in your PC for years to come.
That's one of the reasons I put it on video. I wanted to capture that moment forever.
What an awesome video and an absolutely incredible find! This is what everyone dreams of finding! The time spent with your dad is worth 10x more than any of the cards
Thanks so much. It was a super fun and special day, for sure!!
Gr8 Estate sale find/haul..😲 That's a nice group of vintage cards..😍😉 Love the 62topps football Tarkenton RC's very sharp looking.. Also that is awesome memories with your father..🤔 Take care guys..👍💕🔥⚾👊
Totally agree!! Those Tarkenton RC's are sweet. Appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment. :-)
Beautiful Find Great sharing this moment with your Father, you are Blessed, he sure made his money back 10× +,Great Video Sirs.
Blessed indeed. In MANY ways. Thanks for watching and leaving such a kind comment. I'm glad I was able to share that video with others, but especially glad I was able to capture it so I'll always be able to relive that memory I had with my Dad. :-)
Livin’ the dream. Literally. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching. I was excited to share with everyone. It was a fun experience.
Great find! My dad goes to estate sales all the time and never comes across sports cards. So cool!
My Dad loves estate sales. This was the only time he found vintage cards. I have a video coming soon that reveals the grades of some of these cards from PSA. Pretty interesting how they did.
Enjoyed watching a shared moment with you & you dad
Thanks so much for watching!!
Congrats! Glad to see they're still out there!
My thoughts exactly!! Couldn't believe stuff like this still happens and there are vintage cards still buried away in the wild. Very fun!!
“Wow, that never happens to me!” 😆
Unbelievable, right?
Great story telling!
Appreciate it. Hope you enjoyed the video. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
This is awesome!
Agreed!! Super fun afternoon!!
What a cool dad. Saves it to watch you open it. I could ramble paragraphs about just how cool that part of it is! 😁
100% He's the best!! I'm a lucky guy. He's been that kind of generous person for my whole life.
Thanks for sharing this find. Awesome cards!
Glad you liked it. Such a fun discovery and so glad I could share with others.
The vintage cards are so much better than new stuff. I recently picked up some of those same cards for my own pc. I've got the Aaron 1960 in a PSA 4. The 1961 Brooks Robinson in a 3. And a Frank Robinson raw in ex. Glad to have them with my other vintage finds.
That's awesome. Sounds like you've got a cool collection. Those are the exact sorts of cards I collect, too. Amazing find for sure. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. The best part of posting videos for me is connecting with people and hearing about their stories and collections. :-)
That was awesome!
Yeah. It was a fun day. I have a video coming up soon that is a follow up on it. He sent about a dozen of them off to PSA and the grades are back. Very interesting for sure.
This was epic. The father/son bonding time was worth the price of admission.
Glad you enjoyed it. We had a really fun time doing that together that day.
That was fun to watch! Goldmine find- way to go Dad!! They look to be in great shape!! Great job dad!!
Agreed!! He was excited. And he seemed most excited to be able to share the experience with me. He loves estate sales, and this one paid off!!
@@MidLifeCards My wife and I love yard sales, estate sales as well-- looking for this kinda thing- well I do😁
@@basementcardcollector Me too. My daughter plays competitive soccer. But when we are available in the weekends, I’m always up for some estate sales!!
Great video! Awesome!! Just subscribed
Thanks so much. That was a super fun day, for sure. I recently posted a follow up to that video, where we reveal the PSA grades from many of those cards.
Made me smile the entire 25 minutes watching this
Nobody could possibly give me a bigger compliment that means more to me than this. Thanks!!
So how much were the cards worth?
Insanely awesome find!
Yeah, agreed. It was pretty incredible.
Your dad seems to know his stuff. I can’t believe he went out to call you and tried to negotiate lol. The other guy could have easily bought it too. I would have bought it right away.
He definitely knows his stuff. He had a 1959 and 1960 complete set for years. I think more than anything, the phone call was the share the excitement, and to just confirm what he thought...which is to buy the cards. The guy that was there before him sorta had dibs on them, so I think he was waiting for him to leave before making his move. :-)
I love the pure excitement you display. Spending that time with your dad where you have something in common is something that is organic and special.
Appreciate that. We had a lot of fun and I’m lucky to still have those experiences.
@@MidLifeCards I love my father, but we really dont have anything in common. I dont say this too often, actually at all, but you really made my day with this video. I needed to see this and i stumbled across it, and now im a subscriber and a collector. I actually have a unique collection of baseball memorabilia that very few have, and if you grew up in the 80's watching baseball you'll recognize them. Look at barry bonds, tony gwynn. strawberry eric davis's wristbands and get back to me
@@jimbriggs8648 Appreciate that. I’m glad you enjoyed it. The main reason I made my channel is to hopefully bring some boy to others.
Do you collect their wristbands? The ones with the picture of them on there?
@@MidLifeCards i do...i am friends with the man that invented them. he sent me a ton of them. some game used too
@@jimbriggs8648 Wow. That’s awesome.
Congrats on the great find!
Thanks for watching and commenting. It was a really fun experience for sure.
Stunned. Like finding a chunk of gold walking down the street. One of those Tarkenton rookies is worth way more than what he paid for the whole box. The rest is gravy.
Totally agree. They're in good shape. I'm trying to get him to have them graded. I think they'd do well. It was a crazy situation for sure.
@@MidLifeCards congrats to you both! Father and son stories are the best.
Great video! 👍
Thanks so much. We had a lot of fun that day.
Thank you for sharing! So many great pulls from this box. The closest I have ever come to this was when I bought a box of 1970s football for $35. Cards were beaten and banged up pretty good, but I have been using them to send to guys for autographs. One was a Tony Dorsett RC which he signed for $20.
That's awesome!! That's a great find too!!
Great video!
Thanks so much!! I really appreciate it.
Awesome!!!!!!!
It was a fun day and great memory.
Great show...
Appreciate that. Thanks.
An unbelievable find. I could only wish to find something like this. 👍
It was a really fun and incredible day!!
What a find! I think I would have just gone w the 200. Keep up the awesome videos. Thanks for all the work u do
That was a fun day for sure. Lots of great memories, and I'm excited that I have it on video!!
Phenomenal condition!!! Id be ecstatic to find these!
Yep. Amazing. The cards are so nice- especially the football cards.
Great find love the 60 Aaron
It's a cool looking card isn't it? Great eye appeal for sure!!
What a great video. I'll bet you fell asleep that night thinking about those cards 😂
It was an INCREDIBLE afternoon.
Wow congrats to your pops for an amazing find. Good eye
It was so much fun going through them.
Just came across this video and felt like I was going to have a stroke when you found the Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron cards 😂 I have a 58 Mathews that sits next to my Mathews signed ball but have been looking for an Aaron to sit next to my Aaron signed ball. Awesome find and good job by your dad getting that box
Yeah. That was an amazing experience. I'm super glad we got it on video.
1st time viewer. Wow those 62' black border football cards were immaculate imo..71' topps baseball has the same borders. It is rare to find those in good condition also. I collect the 71' Topps in very good condition. Thank you for sharing your Dads estate sale find.
I agree. Those borders are tough and these ones were so nice. Like you said, those 71 baseball are tough too.
Dream come true!
Truly. It was amazing what was inside that shoebox, and so much fun going through it together. I didn't think stuff like that happened anymore, but apparently, it does!!
Sounds like your dad knows his stuff. Very cool.
For sure!! He spent a lot of time in the 90s putting together a 1959 and 1960 set. And he’s a huge baseball fan!!
Lots of Cleveland hall of famers! Love it
That is awesome you still have your dad to do that with as well as that your dad found a diamond in the sand. Congratulations
Agreed. I'm really lucky that we still get to do this together. We went to a card show together last weekend, too!!
@@MidLifeCards that is a blessings
Estate sales don't happen near me. Incredible find indeed. Congratulations!
This was a rare find for sure. We had so much fun and I’m glad I was able to share it with everyone.
Nice to see cards coming out of a shoebox that are not the all too usual junk wax era cards!
Agreed. We had so much fun that day. I have a video follow up coming out soon. He sent some of them off to PSA and the results were certainly interesting.
Very nice find, I'd give anything to be able to sort through cards with my dad, that's what we enjoyed doing the most, he died in 94, Mantle was his guy, So that's who I collect mostly, Love the Tarketon rookies
I do consider myself extremely lucky to be able to have adventures like that with my dad. One of the main reasons I wanted to grab my phone and record it, is so I’d have it captured forever. Hopefully watching it brought back happy memories for you with your Dad.
@@MidLifeCards yes it did, im new to the youtube
@@billysikes1374 Well I really appreciate you watching my video and taking the time to comment. Thank you!!
Nice cards!!!
For sure. Was such a fun day.
GREAT FIND KEEP AT IT 💪💪💪⚾🔥🏈🔥🏀🔥
It was so much fun going through it all.
My uncle was a trash picker. He would go to dumps and collect scrap. There was an old fridge at one of these dumps. He opened it. It was full of sports cards from the 1950s. He passed away several years later. The cards are still in the family.
Wow. Incredible story.
such a fun break
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for watching.
That's a crazy find
It really was/is. Still can't believe it.
Wow; that is awesome to get a box like that at a garage and for so cheap! And the condition of the early '60s and late '50's were fantastic. The mantle is only maybe a PSA 2 but a bunch of those early '60's look like 7's at worst. And so many stars out of 200 cards!
And super cool to have a dad who is a fellow card collector!
Totally agree. The cards are in great shape. So unreal.
@@888strummer Agreed!! I drag him to card shows with me about once per month.
What a FIND!! The Unitas was the highlight for me. Used to eat crabs at Gablers in Perryman MD with Johnny... well,he drank a lot of beer and had the occasional blue crab 😂😂😂 I was still a teenager. He LOVED talking about playing football. He was a really cool guy!!
Wow. That's amazing!!
Your dad was very fortunate. Usually boxes of sports cards have been cherry-picked before ever being placed in an estate sale. Not to mention unscrupulous browsers slipping the best cards into their pockets,
I totally agree. He got very lucky with that find.
The last thing my dad and I got to do together centered around cards. Great memories.
We've had a lot of fun doing the card collecting thing together. Great memories.
very cool video and great find. I was born in 76 and that year my Dad unfortunately gave away all his cards to a student (he was a high school teacher). But when I was about 12 I found a shoebox in his basement. It was mostly 59 and 61, as well as 61 Fleer. A couple hundred cards, but there were a few nice ones, 59 Aaron, 61 Koufax, Snider...and a 61 Clemente that was actually in his wallet, not in the box with the others! Unfortunately the Clemente is the only one I kept. But just a couple years ago I started collecting vintage again, so naturally I started with those sets I had found. Still need most of the stars, but have over half of each set now. I've also been on the hunt for similar finds out in the wild. The coolest I found probably was a couple boxes, maybe 500 cards total but it was mostly minor stars. The big stars weren't there, but they weren't just commons either, it was a whole bunch of guys like Robin Roberts, Orlando Cepeda, etc, and as I recall some really nice rookies too. Man I'm going to go see if I have a video for that, I bet I do. In addition to that, there were probably a hundred cards from the earlier 50's, that was mostly commons and rough shape, but I actually got a good chunk of 53 Topps! To me that was a huge score, the whole lot was $100.
We had a great day going through those cards. Great memory and great fun.
Nice find, I dream of these sales. When I ask I usually get 1990s crap.
Definitely a rare one. It was a lot of fun.
Congratulations this is amazing and just a dream find!
It really was/is incredible. You never think that you'll actually find yourself in a situation like that. So much fun!!
When I was a kid in the 70's I acquired a 1965 Mantle and 1965 Maris for $5 at the local Mall. Still my best find to date.
Awesome deal!!
I guess it’s important to make sure you have someone who can handle your cards after you pass. I’m glad it ended up in your dad’s collection instead of some dealers. They could have easily gotten well over $1k and I’ve only seen like 20-25 cards.
Me too!! My Dad will appreciate many of those cards for a long time.
My dad, Curtis Smith (RIP) was a featured collector in Goldmine magazine, he found the first two Elvis Presley records ever made, the original Sun 78’s (I know the first one was Milk Cow Blues, can’t think of second one offhand) in very good condition, at a church record sale for like 50 cents each back in the early 90’s. There were not many made and even fewer survived. I think he sold them in the late 90’s (maybe early 2000’s) at auction and made 4 figures on both, not bad for 50 cents. He said it was the most excited he ever was and he was a thriving collector who started building Beatles memorabilia and seeking all the pressings out in the late 70’s. It was going to yard sales and estate sales and flea markets on his every other weekend that I began to learn about records and would help him search for all kinds of records and memorabilia, and he also collected cards and many other things, he just loved it, no wonder I am such a nut.
That’s an amazing story. Thanks for sharing.
That is awesome. FS? ha! Expect more 2s and 3s but I'd still get the key cards graded. They could use some cleaning first.
The Mantle is about 2 but that's worth more than the box raw. You can work out that edge and clean up that stuff on it to maybe get closer to a 3.
The Berra, Aaron, and Mantle definitely have some issues. Others, especially the football cards and 1961 Baseball Cards are in really nice shape and could grade well if that's what he ends up deciding to do.
Great Father Son video! If you are not creating opportunities/ treasure hunting, you are wasting time and money. Imagine buying collections of vintage... like 25,000 cards per transaction and 10, 25, 100 of each card. You know its good when you are constantly running out of penny sleeves, top loaders and boxes.
Appreciate it. Was a lot of fun for sure.
Thank s for sharing New sub
Appreciate that a ton. Thanks so much. The MidLife Card Community is incredible. You'll love the interaction of everyone.
Great job Dad 😅
He killed it on that haul.
