Finding Comps, Crossing Over Slabs, And The Centering Obsession!! MidLife's Midweek Q&A!!
Another Wednesday and another round of Q and A. Although, we all know by now, that it's actually questions and opinions. :-) We cover a wide variety of topics about sports cards this week, including a discussion on finding comps on cards, crossing slabs from one company to another, and the hobby obsession on centering. While I collect vintage baseball, basketball, and football cards, there are a lot of great cards out there beyond those three sports. If you ever have a question about anything relating to sports cards, don't hesitate to ask it in the comments of this video!!

Should We Actually Buy The Sports Cards That WE Like? The Pros And Cons Of Buying What WE Like!!
Переглядів 1,5 тис.4 години тому
One of the most common phrases in card collecting is, "buy what you like." Well, what if we like cards that nobody else likes? Should we still buy those cards? Are we influenced by what others are buying and collecting, or are we doing our own thing? When dealing with anything regarding supply and demand, we are all intertwined together, and decisions that are made from other collectors has a r...

Do Card Grades Still Matter? Taking A Closer Look At The Relevance of Card Grading In The Hobby!!

Many collectors in the card community rely on grades from the grading companies. Other collectors don't want their cards to even be graded. The questions is: will the grades from the grading companies always be as relevant as they are now? Have things cha...

    Here is my question if you think it would be interesting: What do people do with their common modern cards? Those who open boxes and packs or buy auction lots probably have some cards that are not for their PC and may not have an advantageous market for sale. I just bought several large lots of football, hockey and baseball cards at a local auction. Some great cards for my PC: I got cool rookies and favorite stars as well as my leading category cards (vintage cool, Miami Hurricanes, NYY, Dan Marino, Tampa Bay Lightning, and fabulous hockey players, for examples). But I do have some surplusage, mostly in modern football commons. In the past, I have sold common cards at my local flea market and have donated them. What do others do with them? - Heather

    I have to wonder if Adam is referring to his ‘53 Mantle, which I am very jealous of. It’s a bit off-centered top to bottom, but as Adam states in his video, it gives you more red at the bottom around the name. I love that argument! I’m on the hunt for a centered ‘53 Mantle, and now will accept one centered a little high, giving me more red at the bottom.

    Hey Graig, Hope all is going well! You know I’m going to say SGC, but that is mostly due to the era I collect 50’s, thru Rickey Henderson’s RC & some odds. We’re in this slab point in this great hobby, we’re having a vintage card that is safe to hold and look at any time we want and not take the chance of damaging it. I still have a large portion of my collection raw and enjoy those as well. But to me that tuxedo frame post war vintage so well, it’s like a full presentation and the entire slab visually is more appealing to my eyes. Rare odd cards I won’t be as strict on only being SGC. Why pay to reslab a widely available year/player, I wait for the right copy to come along. Looking forward to Coach and your conversation! Take care -Jeremy

    Hello, Graig. It's been said before, a card can speak, to you. When you saw the Ernie Banks 1954 Topps rookie card at the National, the stars aligned. Do you think it's possible, you would ever buy another Ernie Banks rookie card? If not, a higher grade, perhaps a lower grade than your PSA 5, but has the eye appeal, and at a great price that couldn't be, passed up? Ernie Banks did, like playing two. What if you hear the voice, that the card, is getting lonely? Or would you consider a double of another card in your collection such as, picking up another Blackbeard card? Arrr righty then!

    I agree with your point about why card shops don't or won't sell packs. When the autograph cards or other big hits are gone, nobody will want to buy the packs, and I can see how it could be a headache to the card shops.

    I’ve always said the old ways of the good old boy network of dealers setting the market prices is deeply flawed. Buyers determine market. At least in the 80s prices were reasonable but imagine allowing Probstein and Greg Morris to set all the card prices. Ebay and other sites are highly flawed (shilling) but at least it’s a mildly ltrue market sample of what buyers are willing to pay.

    This was an awesome video. I of course loved the centering discussion at the end -- I'm with you and Adam. Even on a set like the 49 Bowman, if the top to bottom is a little off it doesn't bother me nearly as much as when they're off horizontally. But there's a little tolerance built in. As much as I love it, centering is only part of the equation. A card can make up for being a little extra off if it makes up for in other ways, like being extra clean or sharp or the color is extra bold. But in general I always look left to right first and is usually the first thing to disqualify a card when I'm shopping for something. Just my two cents!

    Hey Graig, I was curious as to why you choose to pay for subscriptions to Market Movers and Card Ladder to find comps as opposed to something like 130point that is free and also includes sales other than just Ebay. Does Market Movers and Card Ladder provide more info than 130point does? I've considered buying a sub to Market Movers but just wondering if it's actually worth it.

    Great Q&A Day as usual. I have a new question for next week. If so many people, including myself, are looking closely at Centering and Eye Appeal in graded cards, aren't those cards with poor centering and or an obvious flaw going to be great bargains for investors/collectors who are only interested in the grade and not the card? I have seen huge discounts in prices for same graded cards with centering issues or a spot/printing error on a card for example. Would love to hear your opinions on this topic.

    • @ACD1994

    Good stuff Graig. Question for consideration. Has PSA changed the reasons they will or won't grade a card? Has any wording changed? I haven't seen a card marked OC in a long time. Can you tell the difference between a card graded authentic and a card that's been authenticated but not graded. I recently saw a namath RC in an authentic that looked great. I could see any flaw. Didn't know what think of it. Has it been altered somehow or just authenticated only.

      Yeah, that's a good point. Making UA-cam videos is a choice. Supporting UA-camrs is a choice. Life is too short. Hate-watching just isn't fun. It reminds me of the days, when UA-cam still had the dislike button visible. Could see that how it, would be, discouraging to newer and smaller channels especially. I mean, there is nothing wrong with not agreeing with something or someone, but at least provide some constructive criticism. One of the good things Graig, does is at least listen to viewers, and takes our questions. Anyone can do that, but most don't. So I do respect him for that.

    @Brian-pf7qq 16 годин тому

    I collect raw for many reasons, one of them is, collectors seem to feel a card graded say 15 years ago doesn't hold the grade or value as a card graded today. So according to this logic cards graded in the last five years, won't hold their value or grade 15 to 20 years from now.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards 16 годин тому

      That's a really interesting point. If old slabs don't matter, wont they "not matter" in 15 years. That's really thought provoking.

    Looking forward to the day we can click on just one video without seeing Kamala Harris. Regarding Question #2, PSA does not take focus/registration into account when issuing their random number grades. Have seen countless high number grades from them that make you dizzy just to look at it. Apparently proper focus is not important to them, despite being the most predominant visual aspect of the card. SGC is far better at this.

    Boy oh boy, listening to your SGC to PSA discussion, convinces me to maintain my commitment to ungraded cards. It’s all about the card, not the slab. A slab is like going to your grandmother’s house and having to sit on her sofa with clear plastic covers, or buying a baseball glove and trying to play catch with the glove still in the box.

    Another awesome QnA Graig. Adam's question was hilarious, and I agree with both of you. Left right centering being off really bothers me. Depending on the set top to bottom centering doesn't bother as much. I don't actively look for them, but they don't instantly ping my OCD unless they are very offcentered. Another great set of questions! I agree that left to right centering is the first thing my eye picks up. Obviously it depends on the card design. The 54' Topps for example needs to be perfect left to right but can be off top to bottom a little bit if the name clearly fits on the top of card. Also, the 53' and 63' Topps can be off top to bottom a little bit because i'd rather have a little more color on the bottom where the box is. Obviously, i need some border up top and not have it look like a miscut but left to right is essential.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards 18 годин тому

    Do I collect based on exclusively one grading company? If so which one? Do I focus on "raw" cards"? If so/not so, "Why?" My answer is: "Yes" Ideally I'd like for all of my cards to be graded. Even though that will likely mean "losing money" when I consider how much the card is worth after grading. I just like the look of them and the assurance I feel that they are as protected as they can be and a greater assurance it is authentic. Along that line I like the SGC holder (tuxedo) but really I like that their fees are lower and they offer a faster turnaround time. I see my core collection as kind of a scavenger hunt. I will pick a criteria and then try to find a card that fills that criteria. If I buy raw I plan (hope) to get it graded for the reasons mentioned before. Sometimes my criteria include a specific grade from a specific grading company. I grew up a Cubs fan in the 80s and, as such, was a fan of Ryne Sandberg. So I set forth to try to assemble a set of at least 1 Donruss, Fleer, and Topps rookies of Ryne Sandberg in PSA 8 holders (the price break is between 8-9) for which I wouldn't pay more than $25 (excluding shipping/taxes). I completed that "set" and have now moved on to Craig Biggio and am looking for his rookies in SGC 9 holders. I find that having this format for collecting assures that I will have a "story" behind every card and how/when it was acquired. And, yes, I do have a strong preference for graded cards (largely because the cards I am looking for are often less expensive than the grading fees) but I don't have a strong allegiance to any particular grading company. Though I do really prefer PSA/SGC.

    My answer to your question is that I prefer to purchase and collect raw cards. I do get a limited number of them graded for various reasons. I have cards in 10 different versions of slabs. For some, buying them in slabs was the only way to purchase them. I like to keep my personal collection cards in either CGC or TAG slabs because I believe they present cards best. Also, TAG is by a wide margin the best in transparency in specifically showing why the card received the grade it got. I do get some card specifically graded in PSA slaps because I intend to sell them. Because I know in general they will get the best price. As always, thanks for all your videos!!!

    My answer for this weeks question is it depends. Here's my slab preference breakdown, defiantly SGC for my vintage cards and for colored cards that the tuxedo makes the card pop but I don't like dark cards in SGC slabs example 71 Topps ect. 80's and Modern cards I like PSA slabs my main reason for this I have 5 complete sets that I am slowly having graded and I do enjoy the PSA set registry and App for keeping track of my collection. Beckett, BVG, CGC, TAG if I like the card sure why not and the bonus with these slabs you can get some great deals in these holders. In the long run I really don't care what companies holders my cards are in, the important thing to me is I have the card I in my collection.

    Fascinating commentary, Graig. Your discussion appeals to my rational side. My sports collection may be too personal and emotional. It celebrates us against them, love of the underdog, "He Hate Me," lost dreams, winners, losers and more. To buy it today as opposed to tomorrow fully assists those terms. There is really no place for economic considerations such as the time value of money and taking a long position when considering these terms. But seriously, you have a great point. I should probably put a bit of asset management into my collection. In the long run, I hope that my nephews will want to share it. I am fairly sure that they will not want my European porcelain collection, Asian arts or my physical media. 😃. On this week's question: I have only used and bought PSA. It was the market-leader and I trusted its process. I have always used PSA for autographs that I did not get in person such as Fay Wray, long ago NYY players and various Miami Hurricanes. It seems that the pandemic frenzy with monetizing cards displayed the company's limitations. Today, PSA gets some bad press on a variety of issues and it's grading is viewed as inconsistent at best. I still think PSA 10 rules the day. I don't love the look of SGC's label on the slab. Vintage and antique cards look nice with the black framing effect on the SGC slab (some call it a tuxedo). TAG has an attractive slab, but I have not tried grading there. Originally, it seemed interesting to get nice cards graded by PSA. I will probably do it again soon. I have some designated card candidates. But I consider doing it with some trepidation. The hobby's dark corners challenge us to maintain our youthful enthusiasm. - Heather from The Sunshine State.

      I get it. If you don't like the looks of the SGC slab, then it would make no sense to collect cards in SGC slabs.

    Most of my collection is ungraded, but I have bought some graded cards in recent years. I have no preference regarding which company's slab the card is in, although the SGC tuxedos look great. I have cards in PSA, SGC, Beckett and a few others I can't think of at the moment. The bulk of my collection was purchased prior to 2000 (and prior to grading being a thing) a large portion is from opening packs and trading with friends. I prefer ungraded and still buy a lot of ungraded cards, although I am not opposed to buying graded if the deal is right.

    I disagree about an investment needing to have an expensive price point, like 2K. Theres no golden rule that says that a collectible needs to be worth a certain dollar amount to be considered an investment. Certain items can be an investment at any price point, even items as little as twenty-dollars. Good on anyone who does their own thing to be different, but dont get too crazy. As stated in the video, not buying anything popular is not a wise decision. Quit saying you dont care if nobody else likes what you collect, because guess what? If nobody else likes it, youre stuck with it. Worst yet, you die and your family is stuck with it. Dont be stupid, folks.

    • @MidLifeCards
      @MidLifeCards 16 годин тому

      Definitely not a golden rule or rule of thumb...but I think some things are worthy of generalizations. I agree that if people collect what nobody else likes, then they won't be able to sell it if they decide they don't like it anymore.

    I collect strictly for the value. I primarily purchase investment-grade slabs of legends like Mickey Clemente, Baby Ruth, Willie Aaron, Roberto Mays, and Hank Mantle. Whoever the sports card investment experts on UA-cam tell me to buy! Cards are no different from other financial instruments like stocks, bonds, or real estate. I've luckily never enjoyed nor followed sports so I'm completely unencumbered by nostalgia or irrational allegiance to particular graders, athletes, teams, card manufacturers--factors which hold most collectors back. Collecting cards just because you like the player, card design, or slab is just as idiotic as purchasing a company's stock just because you how their logo looks. You have to buy cards strictly for the $$$$$$ or you will lose your shirt. To the moon!

    I am a very niche collector, I only collect University of Louisville football/basketball and tennis. I prefer the CGC slab for its clarity. If you’ve ever held one you’ll understand what I am refering to. I also really enjoy the way CGC’s registry is set up. But admittedly when I buy PC Cards that are in PSA 10, I will leave them in the 10 case. Because the community appreciates them more and I would be foolish to lower the liquidity on my already niche cards. Thanks for all the videos! I really enjoy them.

      I have a similar "theme" to my collection. Good to see someone else does the same thing. Part of the fun is not just collecting the guys I like/know but learning about new players, their histories. I have had times talking to people and they'll say, "Do you have any cards of X?" I say I haven't heard of them and they fill me in. And I find myself searching out this fairly obscure card and finding one relatively cheap. Now I have a card to remind me of that person as well as that player.

    Hey Craig, I'm PSA only mostly for presentation/space reasons and partly because it's my sense that PSA gives me the best options to find cards from all eras (my collection includes 1880s to today). Potentially greater resale value is in the back of my mind, but that's a far off factor hopefully past my lifetime. I will buy SGC and Beckett holdered cards, but with an eye to either crack or cross them over in due time. Thanks for all the effort you put in to the channel.

    I think the words "influencer" or "influenced" get so much pushback in the hobby because they have such a negative connotation in other areas of social media. Social media "influencers" are often shallow, fake people on Instagram. Grown-ups who collect vintage cards are naturally repudiated by that. I personally hate that "influencers" is a thing in society now. I have a very narrow collecting focus (Tigers/Lions team sets, a 1971 Topps baseball set). I almost never stray from those focuses. I often wish I had a card I see on social media, but finances keep me in my lane. Would I love to collect Hall of Fame player runs? Or every Topps set of the 1970s? Of course. It's just not economically feasible for me. I can also relate to being a person who, when they see something become popular in society, heads in the complete opposite direction.

    Great show. Lots of good points and things to think about. In the vintage world, you gotta think about being “one step ahead” and buy the cards before they get “unbuyable” Ungraded raw cards-grading is the biggest scam in collecting. When you step away and think about how stupid it is and how much money has been wasted in grading you would be embarrassed. The graders have played collectors for big time fools. Do the math!
