    The thing about Nikon is that people don't expect them to have top notch video features because they are known for mostly photography so they don't have to carry that burden of pleasing videographers. Now Sony and Canon on the other hand people expect them to have top notch video features.

      Not necessarily Sony has sorted out models. Like A7m3 is hybrid enough. A7c is for Videographer looking for compact FF using some smaller gimbal. A7R3 is for high MP, A7S3 for Pro Videographer. APS-C whether its Sony, Canon or Nikon its just to satisfy cost.

    Seth, somehow you can get to the nuts and bolts of a release. Nikon seems like it's lagging behind Sony and Canon in terms of mirrorless but honestly, I don't think they are. Maybe it's because Sony caught both Canon and Nikon sleeping years ago and ran away with the mirrorless market. But I think both have made great strides to narrow the gap. The Z5 has been lauded by several photography sites as the most feature rich "entry level" full frame mirrorless camera at its price point. Nikon, in my opinion, needs to take advantage of the bigger flange and issue some 1.2 and 1.4 lenses.
    That's the only thing I would like to see. I bought (invested) in a new Z5 last month and I think it's a great camera.

    Just curious why Nikon would put better 4k 60 in the Z7 II (almost no crop factor) than in the Z6 II, which is supposed to be the better video offering, with a heavy crop? As long as the new eye detect AF and subject tracking are on par with the new Canon and Sony I will be happy - but for video shooters I am confused about the above? Would be curious to hear the explanation. Also please bring out more 1.2 glass (a whole line) - like 85mm 35mm 105mm - yes 105 1.2 would be epic - Canon is doing a 135 1.4 - lets have Nikon keep the crown of 105! Thanks :)

      The Z6 I will actually have the better video, because the crop is just cutting out the overscanned pixels leaving a true full res 4K frame. The Z7 II is going to throw away useable image data by skipping every other line.

    The only thing that people want to know is if the autofocus has gotten up to par with Sony and Canon. it's the only improvement that really matters. Everyone knew there would be two card slots. All I am hearing with the autofocus is technical stuff. like the face detect box and the focus points. the lower light focusing ability is a good improvement, but I am not hearing anyone say that the auto focus has vastly improved. I guess I will have to wait for an actual review. ( the 35 and 85 f1.2 should be top priority ) and hopefully they won't be big and heavy monsters like the new 50 f1.2 S, size and weight does matter to people. it looks like Sigma finally figured that out, there new 85 f1.4 Art E mount is almost half the weight of their original 85 art lens. at 630g. my first DLSR was a Nikon. so I keep rooting for Nikon to compete strong. but so far the focusing has held them back for allot of people. along with how long it is taking to get out lenses. without third party options from Sigma and Tamron.

    • @baronsilverton6504

      I agree with you about the AF. I suspect that it is not on the level of Canon and Sony with respect to the tracking of the AF box to the subject - there will likely be more lag (hopefully less than there is now, but more than Canon and Sony, where there is basically none. That said, as long as the actual focus is not missing irrespective of the box 'appearing' in the correct position then I am content. The real issue is being able to keep the inferior Nikon AF system from freaking out and jumping to some background element and sticking there. Hopefully this has been solved with the Wide Area AF eye detect where the user can now force the camera to stay in a localized area instead of jumping around anywhere. This will likely largely solve the problem, but I still agree it would be nice if Nikon could just match the others for once - I am sure the next camera and the ones after will though, and for now this fix probably makes it functionally competent which is all that really matters. If you are into birding and shooting other wildlife, unfortunately you will have to wait for subsequent cameras as these will not be anywhere near where the new Canon's are. For event photographers, they are now probably 'good enough'. As far as lenses go, I too want to see more 1.2 glass and Nikon has now said there will be an 85 1.2 by the end of 2021 so at least that is moving in the right direction. That said, there is a big difference between 1.2 and 1.4 glass - for example an 85 1.4 and an 85 1.2 - the 1.2 will be bigger - thats physics. Even if Sigma made a 1.2 version of the 85 it would be significantly larger and heavier than the 1.4 they just released. Personally, I don't care in the least about how big and heavy an excellent IQ 1.2 lens is because the use case for such lenses is for professional portrait shoots and the like - not for traveling or hiking. If you want a walk around lens then get the very lightweight and much smaller 1.8 S glass - they have professional level IQ and are all anyone would need for basic photography.

    Can't wait to get my hands on one and have a play about, for me as a shooter my only real concerns are image quality, focusing (not to fussed as I do a lot of manual correction for low light and have gotten used to having no eye-af or the like using an older DSLR) I honestly think grabbing the Z6II or Z7II is a great gateway camera into Nikon for new users and the next upgraded bodies should really cement them in.

Do you know how big the jump is, and also, if the refresh rate on the EVF has increased from 60fps to 120fps? If not, could we see an upgrade to 120fps in a firmware update, now that the hardware/processing power is there to support it?

    I always chuckle at the "two card slots needed for security and peace of mind" mantra. Last year, my Sony a9 corrupted BOTH cards, simultaneously, when its motherboard went insane before giving up the ghost entirely. Fortunately, I only lost some experimental shots I made while playing with lighting setups. The camera was repaired under warranty. The year before, I'd been present at an event when I heard the press photographer exclaim, "My motherboard died!" His was a Nikon. I banged off a few frames from my D7100 and gave them to the sponsoring organization (I've photographed for their educational programs). I saw the photog at the next year's event and he told me his motherboard had been replaced under warranty. I don't lose sleep over my Leica M10's single card.
    I briefly had the Z 7. Nikon had such a deal going on the kit, with lens and FTZ adapter, that I considered it a cheap rental while my Sony was away for repair: I figured I'd sell whichever one I liked least. I've been a Nikonian since my first camera, a FE purchased new in 1982. I traded the a9 (uncomfortable in the hand) for my M10. I later sold the Z 7 because it felt rushed-to-market and confused--seriously, what's with the soccer mom interface?--and Nikon's commitment to the Z mount seemed half-hearted (my 105mm Micro-Nikkor worked great on the adapter). I liked the images and one presently hangs on my wall. I decided to wait for the next generation.
    I do despair of the Hubble Telescope-size lenses. A 13-element Nifty Fifty, the size of a 40-ounce malt liquor can? For my daily use, the M10 and its 50mm f2 Summicron-M (Leitz Canada, 1979) make a more amiable travelling companion. It rides neatly in the center console of my F-150, next to the cup holders. Carrying it feels more like wearing it. I haven't had a rig that handy since my FE and its 50mm Series E lens.

      Thank you someone. I have been warning, for years, all the Wendy Whiner photographers about dual card slots that a "RAID 1"(both card slots/drives write the same data) is often implemented through a single I/O controller chip. When that chip fails, it can corrupt the card entirely. This could also happen at operating system and driver (the base layer of the firmware in the camera) level. This is to say, when you need two slots, you also need two cameras. And mitigate the risk of losing your photos by swapping between the cameras.
      People also don't know that RAID 1 does not protect data integrity. If data is corrupted in one card, there is no objective decision criterion which of the two copies is the correct one. Here I generally advise to Google for "spontaneous bitflips".
      In a seriously robust server for seriously important data processing, I might use three add-in RAID controllers in redundant connections with centralized storage, to mitigate the risk of losing a controller.
      Thus, the best way to use the second card slot is to save JPEGs to that, causing a logically different I/O stream.
      As many so-called card errors follow from user error in swapping cards, swapping cards is actually a risk, not a mitigation.
      Another thing is, when choosing the RAID 1 setting (that is, saving the same file to both cards) then the slowest of the two slots/drives and cards therein determines I/O throughput.

  • @jpdj2715

    Seth, there is persistent myth about the price of memory cards among influencers. SD cards are not "cheaper" but "you can buy cheaper SD cards per GB than CFexpress".
    The average computer and digital camera user is not aware that differences in price between solid state memory products are primarily determined by the robustness of the individual cells in the storage (SSD or card).
    The industry has a unit, actually, to indicate something that corresponds to "life expectancy". The predominant metric or unit they use is "TBW" - total bytes written (read by some as "tera bytes written" but we have to be careful with how to read the number).
    Every time a memory cell is filled with a new value, its current value is erased with a high (relatively) voltage and this slowly wears the cell out. Cell design and quality of components determine how often this can be repeated before a card "dies". If you studied electronics, you will be familiar with "brown out" - that slowly.
    The physical controller in the card keeps track of the usage of cells and uses an address conversion table where memory addresses for the operating system are translated to cell addresses and the controller runs an algorithm to even out cell wear, invisible to the operating system (or firmware), by storing data at other addresses than apparent to the operating system.
    If you look at Samsung SSD, you have an EVO series and PRO series - the difference is how many cell rewrite times the SSD are guaranteed by the manufacturer.
    Physical robustness aside, this plays a big role in the price of the memory cards we use in our cameras.
    A problem is that the TBW number is not generally published with these cards.
    I asked a new brand that claimed extremely long lifetimes if they could give me the TBW for their cards. Answer: it's enough. I walked away from that.
    Well, if you record your CFexpress card to completely fill it every day, offload it to your workstation or post office, then re-use it, this is one complete wear cycle and if you erase-format the card at low level (slow) you cause two wear cycles: one for the format and one for the next write). At some point, the controller in an elegant card will decide "we're done" and the card refuses to be written, or it dies on you before that if you bought a less well-behaved product.
    I would want this to be a known quality of cards. $/GB means nothing without the speed of the card and even when we add the speed, it means nothing as long as we do not know "$/TB TBW".
    Now if you compare the price of the Sony TOUGH CFexpress Type B cards with the Sony TOUGH SDXC UHS-II cards and assume the latter is a bit slower and has significantly less TBW, and make that financial, then you'll see the CFexpress card is a lot more attractive. If only because it offloads its data through my Thunderbolt 3 reader much faster.

I want a hybrid camera which can accommodate my work flow which consists in 40% photos and 60% videos. My videos are rarely more than 10 minutes and never more than 20 minutes. Autofocus has to be utterly dependable as I am a one man show. A flip screen is important to me as I like to be able to check myself as I am filming. Z6Ii seems to check all the box except for the flip screen. I am also considering the Canon eos r6 and the Panasonic S5. What to do?

    • @jasonrehder953
      @jasonrehder953 3 роки тому +1

      They are compatible with the first generation, I use 3 of mine frequently. You just have to manual focus, but if you are talking about autofocus, no that won't work with these either. It's more about the adaptor, and they would need to put in a screw drive motor in the adaptor to focus those lenses.

    @Chrono Cross: Nobody realises Nikon now provides top notch video
    Perhaps this was the case before, but after their initial Z series releases people started to wake up to Nikon and video, expecting more to come and I believe Nikon's about to deliver big time with their second edition of their Z series.
    Not only will the new Nikon Z6II and Z7II have quality video people are likely to discover an amazing camera for photography in the process. Things are moving on and if anything people will appreciate the drastic difference as far as Nikon not holding back on features is concerned, something that their competition is sadly renowned for! And the best bit which many seem to overlook is that Nikon keeps on providing serious feature packed firmware upgrades that turn your existing Nikon Z series cameras into vastly improved cameras down the line. This level of customer support is all we could ask for and if Nikon keep on focusing and providing feature packed firmware upgrades they will stand out from the competition. In my humble opinion this is what all enthusiasts & professionals alike look for as much as new hardware upgrades.
    I very much doubt any other manufacturer will get anywhere near Nikon in terms. of longevity and great value for money now. For me the new Nikon Z6II seems to tick all the boxes and more, much more. What more can I ask for? Did I mention unbeatable value? Oh wait, what about dual processors? Blackmagic support anyone? Improved AF and the superb new Auto-Area Eye option? Improved Low Light performance? Lens choices galore?
    Time to pre-order me thinks.

    Heres somthing I havent heard asked or mentioned:
    Now that the new Nikon cameras have 2 card slots designated for very fast types of cards, will the new cameras be able to record video into both cards for redundancy??

  • @34Media
    @34Media 3 роки тому +1

    Seth can you ask these guys why they dont just add in usb-c support to record to ssd direct and use the one card slot as the back up ? SSD's are way better and faster then cards and tiny now why don't they keep up with the times. Some manufacturer's are but most still keep dancing with dual card slots which takes up a lot of room. If there is a actual technical reason id love to know keeps driving me crazy . cheers

    People say that Nikon don't have to have top video features, but photographers now are also videographers, moreso than any time in the past. Not having a proper 4k60 video mode on a camera that will be still produced through to 2022 is borderline embarrassing.

      Exactly, add to that internal 10 bit and log profile. They should have called it an S update so that next year they could release a 2.0 update if Sony comes out with ab A74 with FF 60p and 10 bit. In the space of 2 years, we have gone from the No1 features ML camera to the worst.

    Why is a DX crop on the 6ii necessary compared to the 7ii? With 2x Expeed 6 it should be possible to extract the 4k from oversampling! The 7ii has 2x resulution of the 6ii...how is it on the 7ii implemented? Lineskipping 2 of 3 lines and so only 1/3 quality???

    • @baronsilverton6504
      @baronsilverton6504 3 роки тому +1

      My guess is that you are correct - what I don't understand is why they don't offer both on the Z6 II - why not have full read out in DX and also an option for full frame with line skipping if necessary - even if it is lesser quality - some are more concerned with shallower depth of field and wider angles than with the most prestine as possible resolution. Maybe they can add this in firmware later - who knows?

      Nikon did this previously with 1st gen Z also. ProRes RAW is a paid update because they have to pay a licensing fee for each camera. If you purchased the Z6 Filmmakers kit you got it for free, because it was included in the kit with the Atomos Ninja V. I assume they are aying Black Magic a licensing fee as well.

    Thank you Nikon for slapping us video shooters that invested heavily in your system. I had high hopes for video shooting and adding 2 bit to a 8 bit file is too much for you. I am sure those that didn't invest in the Z are being rewarded by having the features that should have already there from the start. While us who have trusted you and have invested heavily are toss aside.
