    I've been shooting photography most of my adult life. It started with an on sale Nikon D3200 that wasn't even interested in using, all the way through being a photography business owner, teacher, and UA-cam Photography Content Creator.
    My favorite subjects are Human Portraits and Shallow Depth of Field with my specialty, or claim to fame if you will, being Dramatic Nude and Bodyscape. Over my many years of photography I've mastered many genres but I never stop learning and I don't want you to stop either. That's why I started my UA-cam Channel in the year 2020. After a hiatus from photography, I picked up my camera again just in time for the Covid Pandemic. The world shut down. With more time than ever and no humans to photograph I found myself bored but motivated. ZWade Photo, the UA-cam Channel, was born.

    I am all for DSLR, although I have been using my mirrorless more lately. I have the D780 and I felt I needed it, it's that Hail Mary we got towards the end of the DSLR days and I think it's brilliant hybrid between the two mediums. If only Nikon pulled a Fuji and gave us a dual EVF/OVF that can be changed with the flick of a switch and gave it the ability to use a grip, it would have dethroned any other DSLR!

    I think the D780 is a highly underrated DSLR, many DSLR shooters at this time, myself included wasn't a big fan of EVF's and I loved optical viewfinders. Now I knew mirrorless had many advantages especially with being able to adjust your exposure and see the effects of your changes in real time within the viewfinder but I had and still have a D850 that for Bird in Flight photography or car racing was superior to the Z6/Z7 camera bodies for those Genre's of Photography. By offering Phase Detect AF in LiveView it made shooting video realistic so you were not embarrassed to shoot video with a DSLR ( I would not shoot video with my D850....ever). I think many people thought the D850 was going to be upgraded to offer that capability but it never happened. A neat video and I think the D780 was an attempt to add some mirrorless camera capability to satisfy those who were not ready to jump ship into the mirrorless arena yet and I would argue many D850 users still have not moved to mirrorless waiting for a more affordable option than the Z9, they are still waiting Nikon..........

    I tried both. Don't be fooled. DSLR is still alive. If you want to love your camera and have good photos get the d780. It's like an old Mustang with a new Dacia Duster. You don't need half the crap from new technology, when you get home you just want a sharp, beautiful photo in your lightroome. D780!

      @@ZWadePhoto That's exactly where I stand atm ... My D750 is my go to but is currently in repair .. Shutter issues, card slots issues, images splitting ... So when it comes back, it will be my back up. So as for a main, I was tossing between the D850 or Z6ii. The 850 is not amazing compare to the 750 for wedding photography. So was going towards the z6ii. But then my partner reminded me about the 780 ... Then someone told me that it's not that great of a camera, it's basically a z6ii trapped in a DSLR camera ... They are VERY similar prices here in Australia ... Anyway so i'm still lost haha

    The FTZ has no AF support when you use AF-D lenses so that is minus 5 points for the Z6ii.

    Good review, just one comment on lense options.
    You award a point for the Z6ii over the D780 because the latter cannot use z mount lenses. What about the vast number AF-D lenses that are excellent glass for the money that the D780 can ise but not the Z6ii?
    I fell for the hype a while back and now have fhe Z5. While I used to pick up many AF-D lenses for next to nothing, macro lenses, wide angles, primes which my old D7000 offered and the D780 still does, there opposite is not true, as z lenses are simply too expenses and there are no used offerings.
    For most mortals, there are many more lenses that the D780 can use but not the Z6ii, than the other way round.

    • @ZWadePhoto
      @ZWadePhoto  Рік тому

      I also preferred D lenses over G. I award the point to the z6ii because even with reduced function, the D780 cant hold Z lenses AT ALL. At least with the Z camera your f mount aren’t totally useless.

      Fair enough, thanks for the reply.
      For me, and I’m sure for many who are even vaguely bang for buck conscious, the missing out on AF-D autofocus is a much, much bigger pain than missing out on Z completely. By far most z lenses have AF-S equivalents that are less expensive. Not even to mention AF-D.
      Just one example, and it applies to many lenses. With a DSLR I can pick up a 80-200 2.8 AF-D for a tenth of the price of a Z mount 70-200 2.8. And I can sell former after a trip for almost the same price.
      But the price of the z mount in this case ks prohibitive. Since this lense is used for wildlife where quick responses are the order of the day, lack of autofocus means this lens on a mirrorless where it lacks autofocus, in spite of the bargain, is almlst useless on a z mount.
      Sure the 70-200 z mount is a newer lense and has VR. But if I want that, and if I insist on new, I can have that too with the 70-200 AF-S for slightly more than half the price of the z version. No pain at all in not being able to use z mount in this case, but depending on who you are, a lot of frustrations on not having AF-D autofocus. This is not to mention 3rd party options.
      That means that for Nikon, in practice, F mount simply has many more (full autofocus) options, across the budget/function range, including equivalents for the z mount option while the reverse is not true.
      There are many advantages to mirrorless, but on lense options, at least for Nikon, on my opinion not only should mirrorless not get a point, if a point is awarded it all, it should go in the opposite direction. The bottom line is that if you want a real pro piece of glass with autofocus, at least with F mount, a hobbyist and starting out pro can do that. With z mount many of those same people simply won’t be able to.
      I was aware of this, but was told that manufacturers have fewer restrictions with the being closer to the sensor, and would be pumping out great value z lenses in no time. This turned out not to be the case. I wish I’d known that, it may not be the game changer for wverybody is it is for me, but I really think for people sitting on the fence this matter, at least, ought to be mentioned.

    I have a d750 and d780 and thinking of replacing my d750 soon since it's nearly dead. I love the difference between the d750 and d780, a lot more features and everything, but I don't know if i should replace it with another d780 or z6 ii. So the thing is I'm mostly shootings weddings in really dim places it's like 6400 iso on 1.4 and the AF through the viewfinder is just not working, but the low light af in the live view works okey, but how much more benefit would ti be to switch to z6 ii for the low light af functionality? Ones i tried a some nikon mirrorless camera and the first thing i didn't like about it is the lag when shooting through the electronic viewfinder which you don't have with a optical one, so what's your opinion on that one?

    • @ZWadePhoto
      @ZWadePhoto  Рік тому +1

      The lag is always more apparent when running really dark scenarios, but most of the time I don't see a lag on the Z6ii. If you really want to hit it every time, the Z9 is the only game in town for Nikon at the moment.
      If I was in your shoes, I'd wait to see what the Z8 brings, should be soon. If speculation is correct, it will basically be a smaller Z9 in function for between $3400 and $4000

      I don't tell people how to spend their money, but as a long time Nikon user, and having experience with all brands DSLR and mirrorless, the Z lenses just rule. So for, Nikon is beating Nikon and that's a good place to be. Z mirrorless optics are so sweet.
      If you plan on shooting long term, the ZF would be a good thing to save for, and slowly decide with F mount lenses you want to keep, and which to slowly transition.

  • @dct124
    @dct124 5 місяців тому

    General rule of thumb, never buy the first iteration of any product. Buy the 3rd. Works mainly with cars. But if you look at a Nikon, we got the D300, D700, and D3 as its 3rd line of digital cameras, and each are exceptional in their own right.
    For Z mount we're nearly at that next point with the Z6 and Z7. I think both headed into iii will comparable to the D3 in terms of advancement over it's prior iterations.
    Nikon is slowly but surely moving into cinema and also trying to bring back market shares over Canon. That Red acquisition really does put it back intl the conversation of the big 3. With its new Raw capabilities that surpass even what Red had puts the giant in a favorable position for the future as Canon, Sony, and Fuji don't actually have real Raw capabilities, not on the same level due to that little fine print.

  • @dct124
    @dct124 5 місяців тому

    I also think the D780 (D6 also) was a heat check for Nikon. This is a way to see if they should or shouldn't continue DSLR production. I think we're definitely not goinh back. But with how durable Nikon bodies are and I think we'll have back stock. The D500, D780, D850, and D6 will all be accessible to its primary audience until they die. Obviously for the pro wedding, sports or wildlife photographer this is a problem. For everyone else, these cameras will last 20-40yrs into the future if not the next 100 before they actually flat line.
    By that time the Z line will be competing with the next best thing.

    I absolutely hate the DSLR experience compared to mirrorless. I have long since moved on to Sony and MFT. However, I still use film and have plenty of Nikon glass, so a D780 is in my future for its ability to use screw drive AF-D lenses. If they release a mirrorless camera with a screw drive AF motor (or an adapter with an AF motor built in)then I may buy into Nikon mirrorless, but until they do, I prefer Sony and Panasonic for my mirrorless needs, and the D780 is a nice update for my older AF Nikkors.

    Great video and hugely entertaining! Just a couple of points to consider, you gave a point to the Z6 for it's electronic viewfinder over the D780's optical? Really! I think the lag stands at about 2 minutes between what you see and what happened 2 minutes ago (OK, slight exaggeration, maybe it's a minute?). And the other thing is you ommited to mention battery life, the Z6 take 3 pictures on a full battery, so budget a bunch of cash and a big bag for all the batteries you'll need (another exaggeration, maybe 5 pictures per battery). Thanks for the upload 👍😊

    I own the D780 and I own the Z5. I also have the D750 before that. I am in "I love the DSLR experience" camp. To me DSLRs have better handling for professional portraits and product photography. I like the control layout. I use the Z5 when I want to go outside light and small, and for personal work and also some video work. The Z5 is also a great travel cam. I may sell the Z5 and upgrade to Z6ii to get some added features and a bit better AF functionality. I mainly prefer DSLRs for pro photo work though.

      @@ZWadePhoto Wade, I recently rented the D780 and Z6II. To my alarm, the Z6II seemed to have worse autofocus than the D780. The autofocus system on the Z series often gets confused and cant focus on whats right in front of it, or it back focuses. No such issue with the D780. This is really disappointing and probably why so many mirrorless users are hesitant to pick up a Nikon. You seemed to mention this in the video. Would like to know your opinion as to how this is even possible.

    • @ZWadePhoto
      @ZWadePhoto  Рік тому +1

      @@borlach321 it doesn’t have to be this way. All Nikon has to do is give us firmware. They have been holding out. The Z6ii and Z7ii do have the guts to be WAY better. They pretty much have been corrected for early bugs. Meanwhile the D780 is running on multi decade improvements in Auto Focus. I image that’s why the differences were so stark. As far as Auto area AF, the D780 is going to the Z6ii until Nikon fixes the dumb stuff. But, they will. Probably when the Z6ii launches, I know, that’s a dirty move, but still. At THAT points I think the Z6ii will smoke the 780 all day.

      @@ZWadePhotoyour conclusion was that the D780 was a "stopgap" concession to DSLR users who found the Z6II just not quite good enough. Then the Z8 came along but it's a bit expensive, but, now there's the ZF for the same money as the D780. You have to be really, really obsessed with AF-D lenses to buy a D780 over a ZF now don't you? So... you're doing a whole video about two cameras, without actually trying them ? There's a MAJOR difference if you tried them in real life. The D780 has the 3D track focus, Vs regular AF-C focus on the Z6II. To me, none of the mirrorless Nikon did was usable as far as autofocus. Being used to great autofocus since D700, I can't go back to Canon 5D like autofocus... Now for video, they're actually both pretty good, but the D780 is limited with AF-S lenses, the autofocus movement are definitely visible on the DSLR, whereas it's smooth on the mirrorless. And the 10 bit video is actually very nice as long as you don't shoot in low light !

    • @premiumparis
      @premiumparis 8 місяців тому

      Ok my bad, I see you have a video showing you bought the D780. Have you tried the Z6II ? I did... not the latest firmware though, hopefully they improved, but last time I tried, the autofocus was almost as bad as the first Z6... unusable for professional use. The Z9 when released was a lot better - and finally bringing the 3D focus to mirrorless. But wasn't as reliable as any good DSLR. Now, after 2 years of updates, I can say that the Z9 is actually better at AF than the D780... I don't know if it's better than the D5 or D6, since I never used them, but it's definitely really reliable, and the eye autofocus give it an advantage to DSLR.

      This is why being professional on UA-cam is hard. I know there are plenty of channels out here that just say s**t for content, but not me. You found the D780 video, there are probably over 100 videos on the Z6ii on this channel. Over 75% of the videos were probably recorded in the Z6ii. While this video isn’t an opinion piece, it’s just spec stacking really, I don’t make hardly any videos on anything that I haven’t used.
      Thanks for watching though 🤙
