  • The brand new Hyundai Sonata is a major departure from past generations in styling, tech and features. At just under $35,000, you could also argue its value prospect against the competition. But even though there are plenty of things to love, there are a few things Nathan's not so happy about.

Smat pak is a great feature for someone in a wheelchair. I'm in a wheelchair and I have to get the door all the way open to get in or out. If I can't get a handicap spot or a spot far away sometimes someone will park right next to me and I can't get in the car. This feature would solve that parking issue.

I got my wife a CPO SEL Plus with the convenience and the technology package, 7k miles for $23k all in. The value is awesome, and I do agree with a lot of your likes and dislikes. The design does make it very fuel-efficient (37 MPG average) which is what creates the number one and only thing that bugs me about that beauty so far. When it's pouring heavy rain, either the wipers are too slow, even when set at the highest speed, or the windshield is too much at an angle which causes water to not flow quickly enough. It seems, at least to me, that water tends to just sit there. lol

@@OpFatty Since you asked, I should not leave your question unanswered. One may call that luck, but I say It was God's favor upon my wife and me. We asked, then he answered. Let me tell you this which may help you understand better.
I looked for the car nationwide so I could compare the price to my home state (Florida). The most affordable one was in Maryland and was about $9K lower than the most affordable one in Florida, about 500 miles away. Despite my suspicions, I got in touch with the dealer, and my wife, back in forth, trying to schedule a day to go see the car. The following day, I was informed someone had applied for the car.
A little frustrated, I must admit, I kept browsing the internet for that specific car and color. At the time, as a truck driver, I was somewhere in the Midwest heading Northeast to drop a load in Illinois, and a fellow trucker asked me if I could help by swapping loads for his was running late. I did not hesitate and did not ask any questions; I agreed just because he needed help. The same day we swapped our loads, I got a call from the dealer telling me the person did not get approved for the car, and I could still come and see it. Without hesitation, I said yes. I then started to plan my trip in a way to get there the following day. Now, remember the load I swapped? Well, that load I picked up was heading to Maryland 8 miles away from the dealer. I flew my wife the same day there so she could drive it home.
I hope you read it all and understood.

I love seeing these videos from Nathan because our tastes are so similar. Bought my Sonic partly from the video you did on it. It certainly is a cheap thrill. Just graduated and looking to upgrade. The sonata is good but I think the K5 is a better driver's car. Also, the AWD is really nice in CO. I think the K5 looks better too and to me, the front of the Sonata looks like a whale shark, unattractive. I'm glad you touched on the brakes because that's an issue I have when I drive my Dad's Kohna N-line. The brakes are too sensitive for a daily driver that isn't a sports car. Once you adjust it's fine.

Not at all. Normal mode is more like Eco. Upshifts to higher gears quicker and softer. Sport is more like a Smart Mode. Drive sedately and it will behave sedately. Jump on it and it will downshift quickly and punch you in the back on upshifts. It's fine at low speeds. As much as I wasn't thrilled about the push-button shifter, it's become muscle memory. I don't even look at it any more.
I'm closing in on six months and clicked off 8500 miles today. No offense to all the UA-cam reviewers but I'm not somebody who lived with the car for a couple of days or a week, or took it on a 15-minute test drive. I've driven it through rain, sunny days, throwing it around winding roads, jumped on it and stomped on the brakes more than a few times. I ran down a 5.7 liter Charger weeks before Sam Car Legion's video with the K5 GT. As much to my amazement as well as the guy in the Charger, who followed me off the highway to ask what was in it.

It's June 2022 and finding a new Sonata at hyundai dealership is almost impossible. When I bought mine in Nov of 2021 they had over 40 to choose from and I got a really good deal. $22k on a $28k sticker.

I waited for 6 months for my 2020 Limited (white) to come out and got one with the first 2 weeks. I love the vehicle with a few exceptions you mostly have noted, except for the hesitation in the turbo kicking in prior to acceleration, sometimes worse than others, such as in fast starts. I also wish that the drive mode would not default to normal every time it's restarted. And now I just updated the navigation/head unit firmware for the first time and they completely ruined the interface which affects the whole system (all the other display features. Gone is the split screen where you have a choice of 3 feature to display on the home screen (e.g. Map/Radio/Weather). It looks like something a 3 year old would design, with a lot of the nice features no longer available. The radio information screen is a retro design. If I had wanted a retro vehicle I would have bought one. Are we going backward for forward now. I wanted a somewhat futuristic vehicle, which is what I though I bought. Had I know about the interface changes to the unit I would have skipped the update (and there's no way of rolling it back) and just used android auto if I really had to depend on a map. I came across plenty of other similar complaints about it but everything I've seen states they're not going to do anything to change it. It's already been updated again since with nothing brought back. Besides all this, the update took over 4 hours, which I had to leave the car running as to not drain the battery, and then screwed up my navigation system. I can't set any of it's features or even pull up the map. Saw several of the same complaints, one with the exact same problem as mine. After the dealer tried and couldn't fix it for a few months they finally had to replaced his head unit to resolve the problem. With the new firmware, or course.
I know your original post is fairly dated but, if you see this, just wondered if you updated the firmware for your unit and if so, your thoughts and opinion of it. If you haven't, PLEASE read up about ALL THE COMPLAINTS online before you do since there's no way to reverse it.

I don't know if any one else experiences this, but I feel like theres a bit of lag when accelerating from a zero stop. It feels a bit jerky when accelerating at low speeds as if the transmission isn't changing gears smoothly enough when coming off from the first or second gear. It sort of jumps or jerks when I'm going from soft pressure to harder pressure on the pedal, even if im applying the pressure gradually.. Idk if I'm making sense, but has anyone else experienced this? I can't seem to tell if this is just apart of the new 1.6t engine, if this is normal for the 2021-22 sonatas, or if this is just turbo lag.. but I used to have a 2013 hyundai sonata 2.0 turbo, and I never had this issue.

I have the 2022 Elantra SEL W Premium package, I love the looks of it , just don't like the looks of the Sonata , the Elantra is 10G less and has most of the stuff the Sonata has, also the new IVT transmission has been flawless. Still Sonata is a great car, if you like the looks and style, enjoy. Thanks for the video.

The darkened chrome strip going from the headlight to wrapping around the windows is the same on my 2018 Sonata Limited 2.0T+ , that’s not new for 2021…
    My 2018 is also an 8speed, but with 245 horsepower, so…. A downgrade for 2021 😬
My 2018 has almost all the features you listed even the panoramic sunroof (since mine is the 2018 mid year refresh) except that digital key, digital cluster and parking assist 😂
While I know you’re trying to sell this, this isn’t as crazy updated from other recent years as reviewers are trying to make it sound. Yes there are some upgrades, but for me, not enough to make the leap. My 2018 is fabulous. Fully loaded to basically even today’s standards, low mileage and runs like a dream ♥️

I'm not a fan of this car by any means. The first time I saw this car in broad daylight I was like that front end is ugly as hell! Then about 2 nights ago I saw it on the highway and when I saw the taillights lit from afar, I thought it was an NSX or something special like that so I sped up to catch up and see it up close. When I got up to it, I was blown away how sexy it looked at night, the taillights, the side profile but those damn headlights just kill me. Damn shame whoever designed it just killed it with those ugly headlights but it does look really sexy at night. Almost looks like a coupe with that duck tail. Another thing I saw here I didn't like was the button style shifter and the fact it's FWD, but a plus is its DCT transmission. That along with the torque on this thing should make it fun car to drive.

The engine is worse than the base model which gets the 2.5GDI. Who the hell wants a 1.6 turbo compared to a 2.5L. the 1.6 liter turbo belongs in the base Elantra or a hybrid. Not in the Limited spec
