Professional technique for sewing on a shank button is to put a small, flat button on the opposite (underneath) side. This holds the shank button firmly in place and prevents the heaviness of the shank from tearing the fabric after much usage.

x x Sew a small, flat button to the underside of the garment so that the shank button is sewn to the smaller button. It will hold the shank button flat; otherwise, the weight and position of the shank button will eventually tear the fabric because it will droop downward. Also, lightweight fabrics are better off with flat, regular buttons. Use shank buttons on coats and heavier weight fabrics and always stabilize the opposite side with a smaller, flat button. Just my opinion, but this is professional technique I describe.😊
