Comparing Barrel Contour for 300 PRC

  • This is a comparison review about 2 different contours of the 300 PRC barrels. The tan barrel in the video is an Accuracy International barrel bought from Mile High Shooting that is 26", 1/8 twist and is the AI contour. That barrel was on their website and not a custom barrel. The stainless steel barrel is custom from Southern Precision rifles and is 27", 1/9 twist and is a Heavy Varmint Contour. The Heavy Varmint contour is great for keeping the recoil down due to the added weight.

    Nice set up! I have atx and 6 barrels for it. FYI that’s a 4mm Allen headed bolt not a standard bit just be careful not to damage it.

    Twist recommendations are all over the map with this round. I ordered mine in 1-8.5 just because everyone says something different about what's "best"

    • @tommykawasaki9676
      @tommykawasaki9676 Рік тому +1

      1-8.5 will be just fine.
      I like how lots of folks say a certain twist rate is “Best”
      Best for what ?
      It just depends on what weight bullets you want to shoot.
      Which will depend on what you want to shoot at, with your gun. Critters or targets ?
      Critters get the greatest consideration since targets don’t care how big or small your bullets are.

    hi thank you very much for this great video I have always had a big curiosity
    i wonder how the barrels manufacturers test their barrel for measuring their absolute accuracy
    This is a very important issue to isolate possible problems when the barrel is mounted on a rifle
    what i mean is that if i get a very accurate barrel and i dont get tight groups the problems must be somewhere else rifle wind shooter scope and so on

    Very cool rifle! That cold bore shot was very interesting too. I’ve been learning that when you can, it is ideal to clean your barrel more often. This lets you know when you’re pulling shots as opposed to it being some other factors. Any handloading to be done? I’ll be subscribing, looking forward to more.
    Thanks,
    Isaac

      Thank you for subscribing. I have not bought my hand loading setup yet. Still debating on the actual press I will get. For now they will be factory loads but I do have more content based on this kind of comparisons in the future.

      Agree with you regarding cleaning MORE often.
      There is a window of accuracy present between the first few fouler shots and when the accuracy starts to fade.
      Could be 30 shots or it could be 70 shots.
      Being individual to each rifle and cartridge...the thing to know how many shots before YOUR barrels accuracy starts to fade and keep your rifle clean within that window.

    Gee when you put a big heavy Barrel in the pad, the pad becomes stiff. Who would have thought? This is what passes for a gun video on UA-cam anymore?
    And considering one barrel to the very next Barrel a single company builds even if it's supposed to be an identical Barrel can sometimes produce groups a lot different than those two, I don't know what the point of the video is!
    Only advice I have is you can have the barrel cerakoted to match the gun. I have an M1A that had a stainless barrel and I purchased a military flash suppressor, which actually works better than the piece of s*** they put on the new Springfields, and had the gun cerakoted. It's the first gun I've ever owned with a stainless barrel and I expected to shoot pretty decently, if I am not happy with it I may get a medium weight Krieger barrel for it.

    Nice set up! What distance are you hitting with those ELD-M rounds? At 100y I get a good group but it's all over the place even at 300y and I was getting just over 100fps SD with factory ammo. I started hand loading the 230 A-tips and it's much more consistent. The ELD-M projectile is great but I was less than impressed with factory loads. I'm going to try and use the ELD-M projectile and hand load them to match my chamber and powder load more accurately to see if that improves things.

    I'm really considering a 300 prc build. It that or a AIAX short action. I keep getting hung up on the clicker issue.
    I think you'd see a difference in running a ladder test side by side. But yeah a heavy barrel is way easier to tune.

    • @edgehoard417
      @edgehoard417  2 роки тому

      It is the AXSR version which is the magnum long action. What clicker issue are you referring to? I can post a video of that kind of test later on

    • @JacksonMalcolm
      @JacksonMalcolm 2 роки тому

      @@edgehoard417 yeah it's basically between another origin build for the 300 prc or an AX in some standard short action. Im not sure I can justify the long action for an elr/novelty gun.
      And yeah the clickers are due to not being able to size the base of the case, some people order reamers that are .001 bigger at the head or get their chambers opened up. But with the SAAMI reamer you'll find a sticky bolt lift on the 3-4th firing. This doesn't always happen but it's very common. It's not due to pressure just a sizing issue.

    Shooting a 300 PRC with Fat Bastard brake at indoor range must be brutal on surrounding shooters. Are you doing any reloading with that PRC?

    • @edgehoard417
      @edgehoard417  2 роки тому +1

      At the moment I am not reloading. Getting components was difficult for a while and load development is painstaking. I am saving all the brass and will be reloading soon. The brake is actually pretty mild. I feel it turns it to a 6.5 CM without the brake. It is loud though especially in an indoor range.

    Is the barrel shank 1.250 or the 1.350 for the ASR/AXMC?

    • @edgehoard417
      @edgehoard417  Рік тому

      it is 1.350. Southern Precision Arms has Bartlein barrels with the AXSR designation.

    Even though I am sure that beautiful barrel is hand lapped and with no imperfections in the bore, I cringed that you didn't break it in. Maybe you did but not on the video? And what I have read it that thicker barrels are usually more accurate because less vibration (harmonics), but shorter barrels also decrease vibration.

    Great video. Just became interested in PRS and really like your set up. Might I ask for info on your rifle system? Really looks like a great rig. Quick change on barrel is awesome. Any info you could give me would be great. Gave you a sub also.

    • @edgehoard417
      @edgehoard417  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for the sub, I really appreciate it. This is the Accuracy International AXSR system and it has a specific threading for the different barrels. It is the M30 threading for the chamber. Bugholes.com has this designation specified for their custom barrels. I chose this system over the AT because you can do magnum calibers as well as short action calibers. Just change out the bolt, barrel and Magazine (depending on the family of caliber). There are 3 main sizes to the bolt; short action (308, 6.5 CM, etc), long action (300 WM) and magnum (338 LM). Let me know if you have any other questions.

      @@edgehoard417 I am looking at the 300PRC or the 6.5 PRC. I have no issues with either load. However my wife wants to get started and being a smaller lady (Filipino) I want something she can handle also. Thanks for the information. Is the place you shoot long range in Volusia county Fl? I live in Marion county Fl so its not far from me if it is. Thanks for info.

    • @edgehoard417
      @edgehoard417  Рік тому +1

      @@Frostytravels yes i shoot at Volusia County. This Accuracy international is a heavy rifle even stock but I think it is worth it to absorb some of the recoil from both those loads. I don't think she will have an issue. Definitely getting a Carbon fiber barrel will definitely lighten the load.a bit.

    Bartlein is one of the best barrel makers in the world so comparing their barrel to a factory barrel seems silly in itself. But then you seem to be emphasizing the difference in weight like that’s the only variable.
