One thing about this match nobody talks about is during the match Hogan used Sting's bat on him and the referee saw it and did not disqualify Hogan. The match was a straight up title match with regular rules that should have had Hogan disqualified. Same thing happened in WrestleMania 4 when Hogan used a chair on Andre in the tournament to crown a new heavyweight champion and Andre also used a chair on Hogan to at the same time and they both were disqualified and later that night macho man Savage won the belt remember ?
Nick Patrick basically confirms that Sting wanted a fast count, Hogan wanted a slow count and Bischoff didn't want to make the call. And in the end, Hogan obviously somehow got his way.
Bischoff was just a wimp, a doormat of a boss who didn't want to stand up to Hogan because he wanted to stay in Hogan's good graces. That's it.
Sting didn't want anything. The script called for a fast count. That's it. Why else would Bret Hart come out? Use your basic pea brain better. Patrick is a bullshitting drunkard.
"Basically" is a meaningless garbage word employed by dummies.
I agree with all of this, basically.
Sounds like in this shoot, sting told him to tell the real story and Hogan said "just be vague, brother."
The ending to the match was BS. It killed the angle and helped to kill WCW in the end. WCW put itself out of business.
A very bad desicion
The whole match was BS, Hogan dominated Sting for the majority of the match without even having to cheat. Why did he spend a year hiding from him if he could beat him so easily?
WCW made so many bad decisions, and the Time Warner merger definitely took its toll
It killed the 18 month angle?? The angle was over whether the match was good, bad, or indifferent. What you meant to say was the BS ending gave the angle an unsatisfying denouement.
The build up was so good too. One of the best in the history of pro wrestling and such a shitty payoff
1) Sting should have lifted his shoulder regardless of whether it was a fast count or not, to really put over the story.
2) They overconvoluted the simplest payoff in the history of the business. Sting should have come down from the ceiling (obviously this is pre-Owen Hart incident), said nothing, no sold Hogan's offense for two minutes, then kicked the shit out of him for 90 seconds to three minutes and carried the belt like a badass until reascending into the rafters. It would have been the ultimate payoff and also could have set the table with the nWo finally getting tired of Hogan (which would have been a more sensible starting point for Wolfpac vs. B&W).
This!
solid! perfect!
@@questionableidentity1 And then Bret would not have had to kayfabe order the match to re-start, which he was not authorized to do anywhere in his 3 million dollar wrestling contract. He was not the Commissioner. Bret could have grabbed Patrick after a too quick 2 count.
This would have been, arguably, the biggest moment in WCW history. Simple yet elegant.
Patrick has no reason to lie about it at this point.
Makes more sense than anything else I've heard.
The two top guys wanted their own way before the final outcome of the title change, and Bischoff refused to make a call.
If they wanted to mimic the screw job, why not just have Hogan put Sting in the Sharpshooter/Deathlock?
Because that idea has too much logic for Bischoff.
November 97: Vince McMahon screws Bret to do what he felt was right for the business.
December 97: Eric Bischoff lets Hogan walk all over him, doing what was wrong for business.
In other words, yes - Bischoff should've screwed Hulk if he had to. Hogan was 45, it was time to move him aside anyway.
The funny thing is, WCW was so screwed up that Hogan actually could've just dictated that he was going to beat Sting clean. He had creative control in his contract, if any finish didn't go the way he said he could sue them.
@@mikedeck8381 Sting. He was the biggest star in wrestling in 1997.
You can only have 1 guy on top, hence why Vince got rid of Bret and Shawn. Too many egos.
@189KansasCity in 97, yes he was. He was a bigger draw then
By this account Sting should've kicked out at 2 but didn't. If Sting told Nick Patrick to do a normal count it means Sting wanted to lose or he screwed himself which is very unlikely. We all know Hogan screwed this match up because of ego.
@kermit borris I gotta go back and watch for his shoulder going up. Good observation there.
@kermit borris I actually re watched the match recently and I agree he did
No they are sting needed the out the dude counted slow and it threw sting off on when to put his shoulder up 🤷🏽♂️ from what i gather he’s thinking wait for a fast 3 and kick out on what would been the right time but the three took long and he was off
If you can find a video of the match, you can actually see Hogan tell Patrick to "count it slow" while they are waiting for Sting to come out.
Yup! The same I saw in the full match video on Facebook.
Absolute nonsense... Nick asks about the false finish and Hogan says give me about 14 minutes...
Nick Patrick's explanation was bullshit. It wasn't Sting saying do this, Hogan saying do that, and WCW head which would be Eric Bischoff not making a decision. The play was for Nick Patrick to do a fast count. That's what he was supposed to do and he didn't because Hogan told him not to. There was no confusion from WCW or else they wouldn't have gone with that idea to begin with. Hogan didn't want it, so he went behind everyone's back and got Nick Patrick not to do it.
True. Without the fast count the script doesn’t make any damn sense for anyone but Hogan
I remember watching the match and Hogan is obviously talking to Patrick in the ring during his entrance and Patrick asks him something like "Are you sure?" and Hogan just kinda shakes his head with a response like "don't worry about it".
Edit: Also, the commentators completely ignore it. If it was part of the story line they should have said something. Nick Patrick was chosen at random out of a hat of referee names and that raised eyebrows earlier in the night, but the fact that the commentators completely ignore Hogan and Patrick having a little huddle raises alarm bells.
Same I saw. It really seems watching it that Patrick and Hogan talking on the finish of the match. The full match is available on Facebook.
I saw the same thing. During his introduction, Hogan walks up to Nick Patrick, asks him something, Patrick answers, and Hogan says something to the effect of "LOL nah brother, don't do that"
Makes sense now after hearing this clip
@@justins2437 But couldn't that be construed as part of the kayfabe story that Nick Patrick was reverting back to his old ways and helping Hogan and the nWo win? I would say if Hogan approached Patrick about not doing the fast count, it would have happened backstage and not in front of cameras.
@@justins2437 damn hahaha
What can be seen: (Nick asks the first part, off screen)
Hogan "Help me do what?"
Nick "Help you setup the false finish"
Hogan "Mm..ahhh, give me about 14 minutes..."
Nick "Alright." (As he is turning and heading towards the camera, to ring side; to relay this information; so Hart can be informed...)
(Hogan continues taunting around the ring...)
I remembered watching this PPV and I was so damn confused from Hulk pinning Sting and how they used Bret Hart to win the match.
Same, I didn't know about the screw job back then so I was completely lost.
then Sting had to give up the title and it was just so stupid after all that build.
So Hogan wanted a regular count and Sting wanted the fast count and Bischoff wouldn't step in?
No hogan wanted fast
@@alphaomega1276 I don’t believe so. Sting would want the fast count “because it would give him an out” to restart the match. Also, Brett was in on the story line and his involvement seemingly was there to rebut the fast count. I’m betting hogan wanted the slow count. P
@@alexbain87 Yes.
This was the most disappointing climax of any angle in wrestling history. The payoff was jaded and I can’t believe no one stuck up for what the right thing to do was and put hogan in his place for doing bad business. Problem was, Hogan convinced a large camp in WCW at that time that Sting didn’t deserve the belt. Sting was hangin in the rafters for about a year and Hogan claims he wasn’t training, he wasn’t dieting, and wasn’t tanning. Hogan claimed Sting showed no ambition or drive to be in this spot. I can see both opinions. Sting taking a year off - coming back and winning the strap in his very first match? Eh. But that was the right move for the payoff because that’s what they built. Sting was built as untouchable. I knew this PPV was fucked earlier in the night when outta nowhere Hall comes out and says “sorry guys, Nash ain’t here!” The other surprising thing here is that Nick Patrick apparently opted to listen to Hogan. Shows who everyone feared backstage. I don’t know how Sting wasn’t forever bitter at Hogan for pullin the rug out like that. He coulda killed Stings career. Even the rematch on Nitro was a botch. And then Superbrawl didn’t have a clean finish. Just maddening. Bischoff didn’t have the where with all or the balls to clean this stuff up and it all makes sense why WCW spirals downward for 3 years before closing its doors. The beginning of the end certainly starts here - at Starrcade 97.

Hogan paid him extra to keep quiet.
OneUltimateWarrior Is easy to blame the guy the dirtsheets love to to hate instead of admiting you a lousy ref.
Hogan won by Patrick's slow 3 count. Hogan won by not tapping out to Sting. Nick Patrick and Bret Hart blew it.
Seams about right! Nice to finally get the story straight
Mr. Jay Tv He didnt say shit cuz he know he can get sued for a lie lol
Bret should have never been involved in this match! this match should have been what Austin vs HBK was. short fast with the face getting rid of the heels and just getting the damn win clean. If I recall all of NWO hogans matches before this saw him acting like a coward and getting his ass kicked than some how winning. in this match Hogan was actually FIGHTING. looking like the old hogan who was a superman.
That guy that made himself no found that night was Eric Bischoff
Eastbound and down dude is completely inspired by Nick Patrick.
Thx for sharing was looking for this didn't understand after all these years
This holds up with hogan vs jeff Jarrett
Exactly why I have never liked Hogan
uh, um, uh, uh, Hogan, for real, secretly told Nick Patrick to fast count. Then Bret Hart came out, FOR REAL, not as part of the script, and attacked the ref for screwing Steve Borden. And Brett then had the authority to restart the match. Marks.
Hogan, to make himself look strong, told Patrick to do a normal count. Patrick did a normal count. Everything else went according to script.
The brand split should have happened the next week. Eric beats Larry; Sting beats Hogan. nWo Monday Nitro celebrates Bischoff win as "Easy E" presents the nWo Heavyweight Championship to Hogan. On WCW THUNDER; Gene Okerlund introduces Sting and attempts to ask Sting questions but Sting summons JJ DILLION. Sting says he did his part in alleviating nWo poison from the WCW title. Sting vacates the title over to JJ DILLION. Sting returns to his watchful eye over WCW giving WCW a fresh start on THUNDER. The nWo Heavyweight Championship is contested. It's holders are Hogan; Savage; Nash; Hall; Steiner; Hart and arguably Russo. Uncensored 1998 sees Savage beating Hogan for the nWo title after four flying elbow drops (from each turnbuckle). Souled Out 2000 sees WCW vs nWo. Hogan and Savage vs nWo Jarrett and Hart. Jarrett is WCW Champion (nWo silver spray paint job on title) with Hart being nWo champ. The match looks like a tag team match but actually is a fatal four way match declared by pinfall or submission. Russo pushes for Jarrett vs Hogan but due to differences...Macho Man and Hulkster screw Jarrett out of the WCW title by tagging in Hart after they both give Jarrett their finishers. A confused Hart pins Jarrett to become WCW Champion and basically become UNDISPUTED. On Nitro; Macho Man takes to microphone explaining how Jarrett isn't nWo material. Therefore if Jarrett wants a main event spot he will face Savage and Hogan in grudge matches with a possible shot at Hart's title down the road. The nWo Heavyweight Championship last seen as an Easter Egg of sorts when "Hollywood" Hogan wears it and air guitars it during his WRESTLEMANIA X8 entrance. The nWo Heavyweight Championship; a possible lost gem of wrestling had history gone different.

@@Vsvstubbslmaoooo
Who's arguably arguing for Russo, booker man?
"Basically" is stupid and a meaningless word. The championship would be undisputed at that point. The nonsense filler word "basically" serves no purpose. Easter Eggs are for video games, nerd. You're using that semi colon incorrectly. The second clause is not independent. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semicolon
It sounds like Nick Patrick is still drinking because of this incident. He is like the Scott Norwood of wrestling.
I'm sorry, but how does it help if Nick Patrick isn't willing to name names? The mystery only deepens.
What does Nick Patrick have to lose at this point?
Bishoff was hiding because he did not want to lose sting but he said sting was out of shape and pale. He refuses to tell what personal reason had sting this way but knows it really pushed the envelope on the plans. Hogan told the ref to do slow count because he did not want sting to carry the company knowing he was breaking down.
Sting has since confirmed he was wore out from the road lifestyle. That he had dark secrets that could ruin his marriage. One day he had a spiritual breakthrough talking to his wife. From that on he was born again Christian.
Have Sting win the title, then have him drop it a month or so later for him to deal with his demons.
You get the payoff to your biggest main event ever and then let Sting deal with his demons while someone else like say Bret Hart carried the company.
worn
How nice of Hogan to rob someone else of the belt for the 100th time.
Amazing how Hogan's version of kindness is burying everyone around him.
Why would Sting ever want a slow count?
Native Strength I think he's meaning Sting just wanted a regular 3count.
Obviously, Sting wanted the fast count, which was the intended finish to make the entire storyline make sense, but Hogan wanted the slow count.
it makes perfect sense for Nick to fast count in order for it to be a real screwjob.
robinsl27 I always thought it was suppose to be a clean finish... and with Hulk's creative control, he decided not to put Sting over clean. I may be wrong.
it being wcw, and they were getting Bret makes me think it was supposed to be a screwy finish, but hogan got to Patrick and told him not to fast count. Looking at the amount of lies and BS hogan has said and done in the last 10 years, it is hard to believe hogan isn't the culprit in this.
Nick Patrick got his quotes wrong when he said the man in charge, which I assumed it must be Hogan, not Bischoff. Bischoff is in charge, and he wouldn't tell Nick to do a slow count if it was a plan. We all know Hogan told Nick to do nice slow smooth count. Hogan sabotaged that match out of his own selfish ego. That match was designed to bury Sting, and it was designed to make it looked like Hogan got screwed.
Because Sting wasn’t tan and Was out of shape, Hogan and Bischoff were furious. And Hogan went into business for himself like he always did.
Yeah, this is indicative of what killed WCW... the guy in charge wasn't in charge. He had 1. creative eye for the business (and at the end of the day, the storylines and the way they are told/presented is what brings fans back each week) and 2. no real leadership skills. WWF beats WCW because Vince > Eric (as a promoter, not as a person)
A lot of people talk about the finish, but not the actual match itself. Even if the finish was Sting taking out Hogan with a Scorpion Death Drop and beating him clean in the middle of the ring, the match was still terrible. Sting got in almost no offense, it was slow, and it was poorly planned. It was a shame they screwed it up
So if Hogan had gotten his way, and Nick Patrick counted SLOW, that would have been REALLY BAD.
But I’m surprised it never occurred to Patrick that “hmm, I better count fast, otherwise what is Bret accusing me of?”
so what happened? lol, i still don't understand.
I spent years hating Hogan for ruining Starrcade 97, but now I really wonder whether there isn’t more truth to the story that Steve Borden was in a really really bad place in his life in 1997, and didn’t have his heart into getting ready to make Starrcade 97 the greatest moment in WCW history. Steve Borden, Eric Bischoff, and Hulk all have been cagey about going into detail about Sting’s demons at that specific time, so I wonder if things weren’t so bad that Sting really had given up hope.
If so, for all of the grief that Hogan deserves for his political machinations that did far more harm for the greater good of wrestling, it seems like Sting needs to shoulder some of the blame for letting down all of WCW’s fans that had invested emotional equity in the Sting Crow character’s battle against the NWO.
Even if Sting had demons, you could have put the title on him, give him a short 1-3 month reign, then have him lose the title after.
It's not like they took Sting off TV after this, they still used him regularly.
All Starrcade 97 had to do was have the right guy go over in the most logical way. Sting beating Hogan and WCW beating the NWO decisively.
Sting wasn't going to wrestle a 60 minute classic with Flair, he was going to wrestle Hogan who's not exactly known for his fantastic ring work.
EddieF4
I do wish that Sting had gotten the title in a satisfying way; believe me, I dream booked that PPV how I wanted it, and followed it up with a year’s worth of compelling booking afterwards. It hurts to think of how easy it could have been to satisfy Hogan by keeping him in the main event picture even without the belt.
Everybody know Hogan is The best there is, the best there was, and the best there will ever be TRUE DIVA OF ALL WRESTLING. LMFAO!!!!!
Even the fast count idea was ridiculous, at no point should Sting have been in that jeopardy during that match.
The slow count was the only thing seriously wrong with this match. A lot of people say Sting should have squashed Hogan. I disagree. The Stinger was not a guy that was ever booked to squash anyone his whole career. And Hogan was your top heel. They would find out later with Goldberg, that having your top babyface squash top heels leaves them with no place to go when they win the title, and no drama to build for them.
I agree squashing wouldve been dumb but I also think the match was subpar anyway
I always figured the fast count thing stemmed from when The Outsiders won at Hog Wild 96 from a Nick Patrick fast count.
In other words. Hogan wanted a fast count, Sting wanted a slow count, and Bischoff was not around to make a decision.
why would sting want a slow count, it sounds like your thinking is backwards. Baldy wanted a slow count because his tunnel vision only saw his place and not the big picture. in his childish mind, I assume he saw sting wanting a fas5 count as something that sting wanted only because it nade him look better, so he got competitive and like the big, overgrown steroided up toddler he was, I assume he forced his way. Not realizing that it ruined the introduction to Bret Hart. Most likely, baldy was only thinking of himself, as always.
Zeitgeistmusic997 well i disagree i think the ref is really that bad and since its something that hasnt gone away he now after 10+ yrs wants to blame ppl. "Hell everyone blames baldy why dont i do the same?". But even nash n hall said in an interview the ref was bad n ruined other angles.
No you got it wrong you have the names backwards sting wanted the fast count that would have been the right thing to do Hogan wanted the slow count that way it would look like he won clean and that way he could make Brett look like an idiot Hogan was always doing shit like that just look back at open versus Warrior at WrestleMania 6 it kicks out before the 3 count to make him look strong or some shit they still gave him the win but that's Hogan's way of protecting his ego
Nick Patrick sure fucked up not doing a fast count, but Sting is just as much to blame really for not saving it, why didn't he just kick out after the 2 count? Even if it was a fast count, Sting just laying there not having attempted to kick out would've made him look like he was beaten anyway even with a normal count. If Sting would've just kicked out after 2, then they could've at least salvaged the angle in that way.
That is a great point. That definitely should have been part of a fast count false finish. Hard to think they would have failed to think of that when planning the finish.
That is a terrible point. Sting was told to stay down until the ref counted three. Sting was not going to decide to change the ending even if he realized the count was slow. You think he should have anticipated Hogan manipulating the count and changed the finish on his own all in 2 seconds? You are that astute and confident? so stupid.
@@gregp103 No, what is stupid is not even attempting to kick out at all. Even Hogan himself kicked out right after the three count at wrestlemania 6 to look strong in defeat. If the plan really was for just Sting to lay there and do nothing, then why would a fast count really matter since he would look so beaten anyway. The fact is, Eric Bischoff is the main person to blame for not taking complete control over the finish and, instead, he just let Hulk run with his creative control.
I think it’s pretty easy to figure this out. Patrick mentioned he doesn’t give a dang anymore so that verifies that this is the truth first of all, and that whatever he’d said before was just fluff. Now as for what happened the person in charge made himself scarce because he was trying to do the following at once: keep Hogan happy, come up with a finish that put Sting over, and cover his own ass in case it all failed which it did. He or somebody or a group of people should have made Hogan do business even if it meant getting in his face and scaring him like they had to to HBK at WM 98.
You build a match for 18 months, the crowd wanted Sting to win, and Hogan refused to do what’s best for the business. End of story
The way Hogan stood up totally celebrating and unsurprised at the normal 3 count tells me that Hogan knew he was going over and no fast count
That's not want Nick said guys sting wanted a fast count that way it didn't make him look weak Hogan wanted it slow to make it look like he had beaten him fair and square
Fuck your lack of periods. Sting had no say in it. He was told there would be a fast count. Sting didn't book Bret to complain about a fast count, you no period using ignoramus.
Was he paid by Hogan, or did he just risk being fired? I’m asking that cause if he did a fast count there would’ve been really no issue. In reality I think the bigger issue is Sting should’ve went over clean. There was no reason for all the fluff.
gone
that was equivalent to saying nothing. Be more vague would ya?
BISCHOFF, Clearly
Sting should have known he was going to get fucked over once they mentioned a fast count. Even a real fast count would have made sting look weak as it wasn't like he was getting a schoolboy or roll up type of pin and its not as though he just missed the 3 and was kicking out at the end of "fast count". This totally made bret look like an imbecile as well. Sting looks weak, Bret looks like an idiot and Hogan finally looks strong again after playing the coward heel for a year and a half (loses to piper, luger, numerous tag matches)
More please!
No doubt in my mind that either Hogan directly, or Hogan thru Bischoff, told Nick Patrick to fast count... And I think it was more to screw Bret Hart than Sting... Bret was coming in as the hottest name in the biz after Montreal, and Hogan put over Piper twice in the prior year, so why have a problem putting over Sting? Answer is, he had no problem doing the job to Sting. He wanted to make Bret look ridiculous and he accomplished that feat. Single handedly killed all of Bret's steam, made him look like a goof, and a fool all in one fell swoop. A master class of backstage politics if Ive ever seen one. Bret never was the same in his whole 2+ year run in WCW.
yea bret looked like such a goober coming out and restarting the match

Wow he telling the truth
Wow you dumb
So Hogan says fast count, Sting says keep it nice and slow and Eric says he's not picking sides.
Sting said nothing of the sort. Sting said nothing. The slow count was booked. By Eric.

@Douglas Taggart It's been said. By Eric on his 83 Weeks podcast. Nice scoop, Columbo.
His shape, or tan, or drugs shouldn't have mattered. It was not about the NWA commission rewarding Steve Borden with the belt. The Crow character and the fans needed Hollywood Hogan, after 18 months, to get his comeuppance.
Someone wanted a regular count...does that sound like sting or does that sound like hogan ? Geeee I wonder....
How would a fast count have given Hogan an out? Hogan pinned Sting and Patrick counted his normal slow count

@@TheBestEVER4LIFE The whole match made zero sense. Hogan was cleanly dominating Sting for almost the entire match, with Sting only getting a few short bursts of offense. That's the complete opposite of what we had been led to believe was going to happen in the year long build up.

Sting didn't want anything. He was given directions. Sting was doing what he was told - stay down for a 3 count. He wasn't anticipating being screwed for real, so he followed the script.
