I'm a 68 year old American who grew up on TV since it began.
I am here to say that "Detectorists" is the finest television series of it's genre ever produced. I realize of course that it's a bold statement, considering the thousands of really great British, American and Global shows made in the last 60+ years. (Many might disagree with my opinion (and I realize that it's just my personal opinion and that my comments are not meant to create a "contest").
But I think we can ALL agree that Mr. Crook is a bona fide, cinematic genius (writer, producer, actor) of the First Order.
From his initial concept to casting, story line, script, pacing, editing, sets, location, music, lighting and MOST of all... that brilliant and sublime humor!
I just cannot praise this series and Mr. Crook high enough!
And Johnny Flynn's unique, tender, clever and perfect theme song coupled with his honest and infectious performance easily rivals anything produced by Dylan.
Art Donovan I couldn't agree more with you, it makes me love the world like I did when I was young. Come to England one day, visit our countryside, Devon, Cornwall, Surrey, Herefordshire, Shropshire, you won't regret it.
@@siliconjim2554 I must add, assuming Art is interested in Historic items etc---there are few countries that can equal Britains History, 4000 + compacted years of it. Large hoards of ancient gold and jewels are still been found here, by Detectorists.
I concur. I dare anyone to not fall in love with all of those characters.
A wonderful series and I will admit that when Lance and Andy finally got it right, the wise Magpies responded and the series drew to close...tears came pretty easily to my eyes
Agreed. I live in the area where it's based. In some ways it's a fantasy world, but so perfect in its rendering that it almost seems real. It is utterly beautiful.
An intro I never skip ❤
I absolutely adore Detectorists and it's soundtrack. This show and this track in particular quite literally saved my life.
I love the moment of every episode when this song starts playing
I agree about the sublime beauty and addictive quality of this show. I watch it often just to revisit the wonderful people.
Classic sound! Truly gorgeous music. Johnny Flynn is up there in the folkie pantheon with Richard Thompson, Martin Carthy, Nic Jones and everybody who ever played with early Fairport Convention. Love this stuff!
jabbermocky agreed, he is genius
Im a proud MDist!..This song here is my little club national anthem!..Its more than a hobby, its a chance to discover history!
More than ever, we need the gloriously understated humour of the detectorists.
just discovered this on Netflix how have I missed it watched in one sitting can't wait to see second seris
Exact same for me, just orderd box set so I can get busy watching season 2 :D
I'l buy it off you once you finished lol
And I'll buy it after, cheers. :)
+Joshua Macleod sorry guys I might have to keep as I've just finished season 2 and loved every minute of it
just bought seris 2 will watch at work tomorrow
This song always makes me cry and think of my dog who died and buried next to a pond in the woods.
i think he had a lovely life with your kind and loving heart
This song is a big part of my enjoyment of Detectorists It defines the tone so well, it's like the emotional thesis of the show.
This song is keeping me going through lockdown. I don't know why it's this one, but it is. It makes everything feel a bit less scary and permanent.
I thought it was an old bloke singing but it's a young lad - what a voice.
Looking forward to series 2 and I hope they repeat series 1 since I missed the second episode.
Watch it on BBC I Player
cheers mate will do.
Best song in the last 10 years
Why o why did I not hear about this gem of a show until now.
Brill song aswel✌️😎
Que linda esta la cancion la amo
I love this series on Netflix. Feels very real and emotional also quite funny.
this was so calming and pleasing to my eye! just absolutely loved it.
loving the newly discovered comedy, loving the music even more - who is playing fiddle on this?, does anyone know?
+Lynne Gill Johnny Flynn himself :)
+Pieter-Jan Verstichel Thank you, this is sublime! I love his fiddle style.
Horn as well, Flynn’s a multi-instrumentalist.
Thanks Johnny that really is quite something.
Looking forward to the new series. If it is half as good I'll be happy.
Beautiful song 💔
Favorite song in a long time. Found it the same way most folks have, via the show, as much as I like the show the song is actually my favorite part. I'm not sure if that's odd or not. In any case, beautiful song!
I love this song but mostly that music in the back round
Wonderful.
Hello, my name is Martin Schmitz from Germany, and I have never seen such a beautiful, fantastic series as "Detectorists" in my life, these films are so humorous and full of love that one would like to watch all episodes together, it is already like an addiction, but a nice pleasant addiction! I've seen a lot of films in my 54 years, but I've never been more delighted by films like the series "Detectorists", the actors and the script are unique, just close to the life of the simple, that's what makes this series so likeable. "Detectorists" deserves a sequel with new episodes, many people would certainly be grateful for it and these many people are waiting with great longing for a continuation of this unique wonderful series that touches the hearts of so many people! Please consider a sequel, you would make an audience of millions very happy. Kind regards, Martin Schmitz
I totally agree with you. I've never enjoyed watching anything as much as I enjoyed this series. I've watched it 4 times.
I would love to see it.
True
British comedy at its best
it's quirky.. a little like northern exposure.. you might like "back to life".
Probably the best TV series I have seen in a long time. Real meaning, real heart and real soul throughout that encapsulates you into their world; the real world. And this soundtrack really is the perfect icing on the cake.
No matter how hard you search for gold, chances are it's already right in front of you.
man that's a beautiful quote
Amen to that
Top man absolutely correct a top job we need this much more on tv well done mackenzie
check out Better things,. well written . funny and real.
Couldn’t agree more. 👍🏻
'Pub?'
'Go on, then.'
Ahhh Simplicity is a Blessing
Stop twisting my arm 😁
Brilliant mate.
This song could even make Shiela's lemonade taste lovely.
Uuuugh.... very.... lemony
I thought that it was ironic. When life gives you lemons----make lemonade.
@@karleemiles2988 This is us!
@@kastanek79 I know. Just like the 100 is the scienctists vampires. So many scenes in both show is related to my life experiences. The Detectorist is my comfort show and the 100 is a prayer session, pinpoints the Science technical aspects, and I judge and mark them it annointing power of prayer! I ask and Yah gave me a video map. I am a Good watcher not a rebel against Yah's creation. A prayer warrior....things are happening quickly now, for the time is short. Cheers to McKenzie Crook....and that damn fine cup of coffee. Hitchhiking in the early 70's I got a ride from the Twin Peaks script writer, he was doing research on the series. Spot on.
I love everything about this show: The gentle, beautiful music; the quiet, understated humour; the wonderful acting and, of course, those glorious Suffolk skies....
I've just started to re-watch all the episodes
It's actually set in Essex, to give credit where it's due. :-)
@@paulberridge7418 I'm going to do so too. It reminds me of happier times. x
@@louisaradice4439 I thought it was filmed in Framlingham, which is in Suffolk... it is only 'set' in Essex...
@@vivienclogger Why you not happy Viv? x
This has got to be the best theme song in history. It is so incredibly perfect as sort of thesis for the tone of the show. It's also just one of the most emotionally moving songs I've ever heard.
Totally agree.
i agree music suites the series and characters beautifully.
I am in full agreement with you.
I thought Cheers had the best theme music ever but Cheers is now number two. (and I do mean number two not a euphemism for a poo!😁)
This is the type of show to make you feel okay about the future
Hjard Kuk very well put!!!!!😉
Hjard Kuk Pub?
Go on then
nice one
Here here, refreshing
My wife walked down the aisle to this song. Thank you for your beautiful art that became our beautiful memory.
Us too!
Me too.
What a wonderful thing to do!!
Beautiful.
That's lovely. I bet Mackenzie and Johnnie would both be touched by that.
I absolutely love this theme song. So gentle and natural, and it suits the theme of the show perfectly.
did you see University challenge last night?
+Edmund Chapman ...I can't switch the telly on.
+Ceri Shields funny :)
+Ceri Shields Becky always turns the telly on...
+Edmund Chapman Nope, because i didn't know how to turn on the teli. :)
I was shortlisted for college Jeopardy! about fifteen years ago, I was good. But University Challenge? I watch it regularly and if I can hit four questions per episode I'm doing well. UC is no joke.
One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard
+Zachary Murray I second that. This song makes the series. It sets a mood and feeling that really
compliments what it's about: Searching for love, wealth, happiness.
+Fred Baxter Films I heard that song once and have to say is nothing compared to this song.
+Damian Knight the love and happiness is the wealth friend.
Love the guitar, the voice ... but also the whistful trumpet
Is this song derived from original folk music? I just cannot get it out of my head and as soon as I hear on media I stop.
This will be played at my girlfriend's funeral tomorrow. Gina I miss you so much! X
Beautiful choice for a horrible day. I'm so sorry, mate. Sending love from Texas and hope that in the two years between this post and my comment you've found some peace and joy. 💜
So sorry.
Am so sorry for your loss , I know it's 2 years down the line but as a widow of 6 yrs I know time is meaningless to loss..
My condolences
So sorry man, don't know what to say.
Such a perfect song, the rise and fall. Genius
I didn't bother with this show when it was on TV, however, I have just bought the box set and I'm in love. For me, this programme embodies and typifies the beauty and eccentricity of my beautiful country, England. It has made me laugh and cry in equal measure. I love the characters, the gentle humour and the hark back to the near, yet so far, past. Best programme in decades.
Hi , I live in lovely Suffolk not to far from where it was filmed a beautiful part of the country.
I coudn't agree more. This is a classic tv show. 😃
I'm a keen detectorist myself, I've never found gold though. I listen to this song most days before I go out detecting, gets me in the right mood somehow. Such a beautiful song and a brilliant series.
MattWR4 same with me it gets me in the mood aswell
MattWR4 good luck
Me too, mate
I listen to it as well
Are you a metal detector? 😂😂
I'm a 51 year old man in the US and this is the best series I have ever watched. I loved the witty humor, beautiful landscapes with that smiling hazy sunshine. The reconciliation with "Simon and Garfunkel" at the end was heartwarming. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this 10 years later.
Absolutely astonishing series 🎉👏🏼
Welcome to England, my friend. McKenzie Crook turned down Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 to write, star in and direct Detectorists. Legend!
Thanks for spoiling the ending. In that spirit, in the Christmas Special we learn Simon and Garfunkel screwed over the DMDC, and later Andy and Lance find the Holy Grail.
@@patricklavalley4233 A rather assish move..
@@Runningtherace51 A well-deserved assish move. I was one episode away from the finale.
Been a digger for forty five years...that being said, this song embodies every second of those years. Thank you.
+REBDIGS So how many ring pulls is that?
Hell I'm only fourteen and I really enjoy listening to this 😂
+kirsten mo im 10 and i love this
+Sebastián Vélez Awesome reference *high five*
Do you now know every kind of model car?
This was played for our first dance at our wedding! :)
I am considering this one for ours, too! :D
Wow great choice
This will be ours! Can I ask what type of dance you did for it? I'd like something sweeping and whirling, but can probably only manage an awkward shuffle.
We just played it at the registry office and made people weep 😂
Short dance....2m 2sec?
This song will always be special to me, as me and a friend watched it all,, together last summer, laughing at the humour and wishing we could go metal detecting. He passed away last week, i hope he found peace by a fishing lake somewhere and had some beautiful times in the sun.
I’m so very sorry for your loss, and I hope the treasured memories you have will carry you through.
Sending love, light and positive peace ❤xx
Man, this show is so good. I hope they do a season 3.
Absolutely agree! Season 3 Mr. Crook please!
Me too. Nothing is quite like it. Any word about a season 3?
ktommycary he was interviewed last year, radio 6 with radmac, prior to the Xmas episode and said he felt it best to leave at 2 series rather than possibly over do it or ruin the first 2 series with a not as good 3rd series. As much as I loved it and would of liked a 3rd series I think he's a way smarter man than me and knows best, so I have to agree. think the fresh lemon scene was one of the best scenes 😂
The show could use a few more episodes to tidy up.Way too many loose ends now. And don't do the conventional like the shows in this country which spend all their time dodging ads.
Sometimes it's the things left unsaid that hold the best memories
Detectorists was perfection and this song was perfect for the show.
This song is perfect as such !
Lovely! And the show is simply wonderful--a blessed oasis in the midst of cop shows and reality TV
Totally agree Juliet... It's a marvellous show amidst the rubbish that is served up far more frequently than it used to... Best U.K. comedy show I've seen since REV... I just hope that Mackenzie makes another series or comes up with another idea equally interesting.
not to mention the god-awful news. I've stopped watching it anyway, does it make a difference ? yeah, my blood pressure has drooped to normal.
Getting to hear this song at the beginning of each episode makes it difficult not to binge.
'If their gentle exploits haven’t made your heart sing and your stomach go fuzzy then, well, we can never be friends.', quote from a Guardian review of the show back in 2017. I've only just found this show, but it's great to see how many people's lives it has benefited.
I found this show by accident and thank the tv gods I did 😃
Likewise, scrolling through iplayer, saw Mackenzie Crook and Toby Jones and thought why not? Best decision ever.
love the show and the song both, great job on this one Sir.
potatothorn you see university challenge lastnight?
My response like only exemplifies how it actually is, so blissful peace and love
Will you search through the loamy earth for me
Climb through the briar and bramble
I'll be your treasure
I felt the touch of the kings
And the breath of the wind
I knew the call of all the song birds
They sang all the wrong words
I'm waiting for you
I'm waiting for you
Will you swim through the briny sea for me
Roll along the oceans floor
I'll be your treasure
I'm with the ghost of the men
Who can never sing again
There's a place follow me
Where a love lost at sea
Is waiting for you
Is waiting for you
Edit: sorry for my spelling errors 🥺
The only usefull comment out of 534. Hands down.
This should have been in the description in the first place.
Niamh Martin thank you for the lyrics
I think it's 'briar'...
Excellent work! It is loamy earth though :)
Cheers beautiful😊😊
TV series of the year - Outstanding.!
Totally agree and this tune is so fitting.
utterly brilliant!

I'm Italian and I always watched American series, dubbed or subtitled. In recent years I have found British series, and I realized that they are clearly superior, in writing, acting, everything. This series summarizes how much British are better in this work.
(Sorry for bad English, I hope it is understood what I meant.) Bye. Ciao.
ouch. depends on the series I'd say. sure we put out a lot of crap, but there are some gems out there too. our writers and actors aren't completely worthless :(
Try Peaky Blinders that's good too xx
un connazionale che conosce detectorist! Ciao ciaoo! XD
So true! I'm American and I cancelled my cable and watch mainly Acorn TV and the Roku channel. The acting in other countries is So much better! They seem like real people. American actors are just about looks and perfect teeth! Most can't act...
I enjoy Inspector Montalbano... brilliant series...and brilliant books.
im from near detroit, michigan and i must say that this show touched a certain feeling in my heart and i can't wait to see more
Detroit?
My wife and I absolutely love this show and have watched the box set several times. The script and acting are so perfect and the beautiful Suffolk countryside and the filming in the picturesque village of Framlingham fit so perfectly. If you ever get a chance to visit this little gem of a place then do so. The village hall, church, Maggie's shop, Two Brewers pub and Framlingham Castle (not featured in the show) are all within a five minute walk of each other and we love to visit whenever we are down from Sheffield. All the actors involved are so perfectly cast and yes the theme tune is also an absolute gem. If you love this show then check out Mackenzie Crooks take on Worzel Gummidge.... its a treat.
I love this theme tune. It feels like the green and pleasant land of England. As I peer across the New York skyline I know I love my home country.
Listen to Jerusalem then fella and imagine actually being in this green and pleasant land. Also if you do manage to get here you're most welcome at my home. It's called Bodwylfa in North Wales UK
Everything about it from start to finish is just so beautiful. The concept is so simple but yet so poignant.
loved this quiet show, which turned me on to Johnny Flynn's wonderful music
Lovely song and well done Mackenzie Crook for a brilliant series may it go on forever pleasing future generations.
This song calms my heart
just discovered this beautiful series, it's like finding treasure. wonderful.
k windsock I just discovered last week ... Truly amazing soul lifting feathers with their down heart warming charm
I first watched this when it debuted but it didn't catch with me until a good few years later. I started watching it through the summer of 2020, in the middle of UK lockdown. My lifelong friend and I would meet outside and sit by the river, a little walk across the fields from where I live. We would sit by the shore, drinking tea, eating biscuits and watching the landscape. This song absolutely reminds me of that time. I also recommended Detectorists to him and he loves it too. This song is absolutely perfect as it encapsulates those lazy warm summer afternoons chatting with an old friend.
Those are beautiful memories - the type that you will treasure for years to come. Thank you for sharing :)
You made me smile thank you
I'm 45, my friend and I would ride our bikes in the woods, hike and talk for hours. Lockdown was awful on the whole, but it created breathing space for us to reconnect with child-like experiences, allowed only by the excess of time.
It is completely unlike any TV show I’ve ever seen in the way it plugged your heart strings and you laugh and cry at the same time
This song makes me both incredibly sad and incredibly happy. Masterpiece.
Absolutely
Sums my reaction to this perfectly each time I watch and hear it.
Same.
I can't remember when I last enjoyed a comedy series as much as Detectorists. It's sublime, & worth watching each episode twice to appreciate all the nuances. It's also a refreshing change to hear the accent....rather than the usual ones on tv now.
This show distils what it is to be English down to a very fine point.
Lance found gold. Best. TV series. Ever.
In the beginning, I thought my husband was absolutely nuts for watching this. Once I watched it, I was hooked. Love Johnny Flynn's music, and I'd never heard of him before. His music reminds me of the folk music we sang in America, in the 60's :)
Just like the theme of the TV show this is something waiting to be discovered for a lot of people out there. It truly is a treasure in itself. Love the show.
Fantastic show shame it had to end ..
Not all treasure's silver and gold, mate.
I’m an archaeologist and this song describes exactly my feelings of the past and rediscovering it
This is just one of the most lovely TV shows ever. Everything about it is wonderful, from this theme song to the deliciously lovely stories and characterisations. I adore it.
Three television series (Scrotal Recall, Brotherhood and Detectorist, including this song); two Shakespeare plays at the Globe; a new album; two major films out and at least two more in production; and doing the score/music for another Shakespeare play. A busy couple of years for Johnny Flynn.
The creative sensitivity of this series and music is nothing short of genius. I’m literally praying for more episodes as Lance and Andy have become my best friends. Johnny Flynn is superb. More please!
The best programme ever on TV since, since, since, It is the best programme ever.
This is such a beautiful song! I just recently discovered "The Detectorists" and absolutely love it! I wish it was back since it apparently ran only a couple of seasons. It's brilliant - such fantastic acting/story line.
Hello Marcia .
you have good taste in TV. Lance and Andy are every day people.
Respect from north Yorkshire England
I just started watching it yesterday. I absolutely love it . Such a beautiful program. I find it very relaxing to watch. Brilliant cast ❤❤
Simon and Garfunkel would be proud!
Please don’t cry.
Welly Welly Well Well Well.
my dad died earlier this year, he was a detectorist and a big fan of the show, this was played in the entrance of his funeral and although i hadn't seen him in 6 years it really got me emotional, its a really beautiful song. I had been waiting for the right time to see him for the first time in ages and then he died so the lyrics ' i'm waiting for you ' are really sad for me.
It’s the same with my dad he loved this show and found a few good things himself. We also played this at his funeral. My mum also told me that he was going to give me his equipment when he passed and I love it.
All the best to you both. Somehow, this show does seem like a real 'dad' show. It was touching to read your comments.
My father died a year before the first series came out but I know he would have loved it - Mackenzie Crook in this resembles my father in some ways in this series which to me is a comfort. I never would have found this gem of a series if not for my grief counsellor at school.
It is a show to be shared with someone, even if they are no longer with us.
That really got me in tears I’m very sorry for your loss wish you a lot of joy through your life
Dear Asa,
I was very moved reading about you waiting for the right time to see your Dad. We can all jump on people’s bandwagons these days with little thought or respect, however my darling daughter has not spoken to for some 4 years, I have a life limiting illness, she lives in Germany. Enough said, the song and series are truly unique, funny and calming. I hope my waiting for her is in time. You were brave writing about your story.

Absolutely love this song and the series. I felt that the star of the show was the countryside...made me want to go detectoring myself.
This is one of my very favourite tv shows. I love how real the characters are. I have watched it over and over and never get tired of it. You cant beat British television. I am so sick of all the plastic American actors. Give me real people any day.

Please disregard Dougal, got distracted- it was Andy I meant to speak about.
My best pal and I talk about this show at least once during our drunken weekly ramblings at our local. The most wonderful show with the most lovely fan base. It really was a gem and as much as I long for a 4th series, I'd rather pine for it than ever be disappointed with it overrunning. In this hectic life and crazy time in Britain right now, this show was the perfect antidote on all that is great. Bucolic loveliness. Pub? Go on then.
